Hey guys, I'm going to be making a new video series where I spend 15-30 mins designing quick and simple paper toys.

Leave a reply with a character or idea and I'll work it into the series. Cheers.

(example : Do Mario as a dog)

I've finished the model. It'll be released for download when the first episode of the show goes live, which I'm aiming for Monday. I have 19 hours of footage to go through and edit so there may be slight delays for this first episode to be done.

Just finished the design for this project, I've only designed one animal with a set of weapons, but created a whole modular system that's easy to build so that other people can design additional animals and weapons. I'll probably re-visit this model after the video goes up adding some new weapons too. Pictured is a preview of the style and weapon set.

Hey guys, this threads calmed down a little bit so I've compiled all the suggestions you've given me thus far as well as suggestions from the video comments and Facebook onto a spreadsheet.

I'm currently working on the next episode, designing a paper toy of a Transformer (that will actually transform!). Thought I'd share a little look at the template. (Image attached).

Hey all, this thread seems fairly dead, so I've written down all the suggestions you've given and will use a few, and then focus on the suggestions from the Youtube video comments unless I see a sudden burst of life on here.

Thanks guys!

Pictures below is the progress on the next video project. It's Soundwave from Transformers, the model will really transform, it's pretty complicated to design so it's taking longer than I'd like to get out the next episode, especially because of the more detailed style.
>>
>>555462
It's looking good. Looking foward to your other videos.
>>
It's here, the third installment of the design series, the most complex and time consuming design yet, a working Transformer.

https://youtu.be/vvK00PkL3DM

I think I'm going to limit myself to a single day of design time in future, because although I'm happy with the outcome of this episode the design and editing process were unpleasant.

I've not got many vehicles in my portfolio so this could make for a fun video exploring how to determine templates based on front top and side photos. I'll add it to the list.

Also, just generally keeping the thread updated with the various videos going up, I just uploaded one exploring a patreon toy. I show off how the bottom section of the model flips around so you're actually building it kind of in-side-out. Thought some might find the technique interesting, link below.

Take all the time you need, pal. Your videos are really interesting in term of techniques and secrets of such simple toys making, even if it's hard to call it "simple toys" after watching them.

Suggesting something complicated with already big list of requests doesn't feels right, and it's mostly humans and machines with robots, so what about something fluffy, easy and with already simple design (and probably something that no one did yet)? Like Bokko from The Amazing 3? Or maybe at least some tips on making more round shapes for your models while staying minimalistic?

Here's what I've been busy with recently, some of you might enjoy these. Rick and Morty paper toys, the plan is to do a whole bunch of these, make a video going through each episode of the show, picking out characters to make for the series and designing them.

Sorry, working on it, I often get a friend of mine to do the tabbing on models (gives me more time to design and I help them out with projects in return), however this toy proved too much for them to deal with, which is fair enough.

I'll try and force myself to sit down tomorrow, do the tabbing for this monstrosity and release it for download before the next video goes up (I don't want to add to my paper toy backlog).

I'm still here, I lost my voice so can't make videos which is frustrating, but the next video is a request from this thread.

That's strange, this problem was brought to my attention just after the upload and the files were fixed and re-uploaded. I just downloaded the model from the site and it gave me the amended version of the model.

I'd recommend re-downloading and printing to get that final part at the right scale.

Sorry about that <3

I mean, teeth aside (I actually paid attention to and appreciated your dry, pseudo-nonsensical humor, hence the focus on the mouth), this whole thing is really fucking cool and makes me want to try and get back into papercrafting instead of being afraid of just constantly fucking shit up or printing things in the wrong proportion/size, etc.

That's reassuring to hear. Perhaps at the end of 2018 I'll put up a survey to the patrons and see what everyone's thoughts are about printing a limited edition book. I just don't want people to feel like they paid for something, and now people are getting the same thing at a reduced cost.

I think it'd be a nice idea to send a physical copy of the book to those who have been supporting the Patreon scheme for a long time. I'll figure out the logistics neerer the time.

>>
>>559677
I started work on your request.
I tweaked the overall shape of the Ghost so that when flat elements would be 45 degrees, which means the template looks like this...

The cool part is that this means you effectively just turn the template inside out and it creates each half of the Ghost! I'm excited to build this piece.

Update before bed, I'm texturing the Ghost, almost done. I've also designed a small display stand. It's an interesting model to explain how lighting should be approached with 2D,3D images. So that might make for an interesting part of the video.

Also, I'm excited for this Nintendo Labo stuff, people are going mad for it, so I should probably find a way to jump on that bandwagon. Any suggestions other than the usual building/playing videos that will soon be flooding the internet?

>>560067
I've been continuing work on the Ghost papercraft today, figured I'd update before bed. I test build the last design, only to find the finished toy was very thin and didn't match the shape of a Ghost in profile, it took 3 new attempts, but I eventually figured out where I was going wrong, I'll cover it all in the video because it's interesting seeing how such a small change in perspective can result in so many solutions.

So today I re-made the toy from scratch, as the last template was broken. Unfortunately it no longer has to turned inside out, and isn't a square which is a shame, but at least the pieces sit really nicely on the page (pic attached).

I'll be filming some of the live action parts of the video tomorrow and the next episode should be out on Sunday.

Totoro's pretty round, so harder to fold
>>
>>560874
>>560851
Round isn't too much of an issue, a lot of the time you just design the model rigid, then build it without folding and then make a new prototype addressing any issues this causes and rounding out curved faces etc.

My main thought with designing a Totoro toy, is that there's already many out there, including an exceptional model designed by Studioofmm. So I'm not sure what I could really add. I'd have to think of a way to do something different, otherwise I'd just be diverting downloads/pageviews away from an already deserving design.

You should do Totoro anyway. Look at it in terms of artists, how many people have already drawn Peach or Samus?
But artists still draw more. It's about the character, but more about the artist representing the character. To see a Totoro papercraft designed by FUT would add to the lexicon of the craft and even bring more attention to previous designers by reigniting interest.
In other words, by not making the Totoro papercraft, you're inhibiting the growth of the paper craft culture and stagnating ideas for others to build on.
Just something to think about.

I'm always very unsure about my attempts at adding humor to the videos, I know full well many will find it cringey etc, but I also feel I need a way to break up the videos so it doesn't just become 20 minutes of me talking about angles and maths with no breaks.

I'm definitely open to suggestions in regards to what other ways I could keep the videos from becoming too dry whilst steering clear from silly gags and gross-out humour.

On a side note, the transitions not something I am all that open about, it's no secret but also not something I feel the need to go on about. I always find it somewhat annoying when there's a content creator who seems to make the fact they're trans half of their content, it's obnoxious.
>>
>>561519
>it's obnoxious
You're obnoxious. You're what grosses people out. I absolutely cannot stand trannies.
>>
>>561513
>>561519

To be honest the process/method IS the really interesting thing in the videos, so 20 minutes of angles/maths/detail about how you created such-and-such effect would be really cool!

The videos where you explain in an accessible way how you worked out how to make things fit on one sheet are awesome.

The bits where you overlay stuff (e.g. reddit/4chan threads) while rambling is appropriately dry/funny -- the bits where you gargle yoghurt drink are funny but less easy to explain to people that I might share the video with.

Nothing stopping you from having a separate outlet for that sort of humour I guess if you're wanting to reach a broader audience with the /po/ stuff!

Perhaps thinking "would I be okay with showing everything in this video to a potential client/employer" or "would this be appropriate to a show a group of 10-year olds in class" would help with deciding what makes the *cut* :D

(New image of crash test dummy standing up)

>>561759
Thanks for sharing your build! I was a little worried you might have an issue connecting the head to the body because the template offers no instructions etc, but I'm glad to see it didn't cause you any trouble.

That entire model was designed as a test piece for that head to body connection. Although ti could be used for interchangeable parts, there are other more elegant and versatile techniques that could be used instead. I think the only time I'd re-use this style of connection is for situations where I'm limited on page space or can't use a scalpel on the template (due it being for children) because there's no need to slice into the page or create any holes.
>>
>>561760
It's a good idea, especially if it is aimed at younger/newer crafters.

Hey guys, partially thanks to this thread I was recently interviewed by Discover Geek as part of their new makers section, and wanted to share a section of it on the topic of failure.

"If you’re just getting started on your own creative project, the best advice I can give you is to not be afraid of failure. Failure is unavoidable and necessary for growth, if anything you should be striving to fail, fail as often and as spectacularly as you can when it comes to your creative pursuit. Fear of failing leads to lack of experimentation, and that leads to stagnation.

If you’re starting something creative, fail more often and as quickly as you can, you’ll be better for it. In time you’ll turn those failures into a larger success, and you don’t have to upload all of your experiments and failures to the internet."

You can find the rest of the interview here, to find out more about my design proccess etc - https://www.discovergeek.com/interview-alex-gwynne-fold-toys/

>>562101
I thought this was an interesting question, so I answered it in my Patreon Q&A video. I thought it could make for an interesting opportunity to talk about why I don't release many paper toys with curved edges and why I make the fold lines so visible. (Plus I talked about how my design philosophy has changed from wanting overly complex and detailed textures to clean minimal designs.) However, having seen this post >>562204 it seems I've given you too much credit.

Every model in the image you've posted was designed using 3D software, using multiple pages and creating an extremely complicated build. It's a conversion from a 3D file, to a 2D layout, where as what I do create a 2D image, that transforms into a 3D model using simple maths and paper engineering techniques, the two are opposites with similar outcomes.

However, this can lead to an interesting discussion on the difference between a papercraft and a papertoy. Where as there's seemingly no limit to how complex and intricate papercraft models can become, in general papertoys focus on simple and accessible designs, usually just encompassing a single page. Working within such limitations can in of itself create a lot of interesting challenges, how can one communicate a shape and character using only 1 or two pages, and make them fold together relatively quickly. I personally enjoy trying to make my models just “one piece” so when they’re cut away from the page the whole model just folds together, without having to glue, for example, the head onto the body as separate elements. Finding a way to make the toys layout compact and still contort just one piece can be a complicated task, but if well designed a simple and enjoyable task for the builder.

1/2 - Proof on Twitter
>>
(Cont 2/2)
>>562210

Limitation breads innovation. If what you consider makes a papercraft impressive is a 3D file with lots of little parts and detail, more power to you, but you’ll be the first person I’ve encountered who uses Michel Bay’s transformers as an example of good, coherent design.

Check out my Q&A video, linked below, it might help give you a better idea of why I stay away from curves in situations where I can’t control the thickness of paper the end user will be building with, as well as why I’ve decided to embrace thick fold lines rather than try and hide them.

Hey guys, the next episode of Let's Design, the paper toy design show is here!

In this episode I designed the Colossal Titan from the popular anime and manga Attack on Titan. It's a simple and cute build with a few interesting techniques throughout.

The model is now available as part of the new early access here scheme here - http://folduptoys.com/portfolio/colossal-titan-fan-art/

I don't understand what this means :)

I forgot to add the link for the video, my bad.

AHHHH, you did the porg, I made one for my GF she loved it.

Again, with the anon self posts OP?
>>
>>562397
That was me, I'm not OP
>>
>>562390 Oh, I'd probably use a craft knife, it would be fitting considering how often I accidently slice myself whilst building models.

I've just revealed a few new toys onto the Fold Up Toys website, including the crash test dummy previously posted and this charming magic rabbit in a hat.

Tomorrow I'll be uploading a bunch of old commercial and commission work to the website and it looks like most clients are ok with me releasing them for download. I've got to call them and see how they feel about them being included in the early access program but either way I've got five models on my desk ready to go.

>>
>>562437
I ended up creating a Goo Compass from the indie game title Flinthook instead of releasing the client work. The model is available for download here : http://folduptoys.com/portfolio/flinthook-goo-compass/
>>
>>562437
That would be poetic.

I think anon was hoping you would make paper versions of the weapons.

The other day, I stumbled across a video of the new indie game Flinthook, whilst watching I saw a gorgeous piece of character design, the Goo Compass, a slimey companion that points towards adventure. I thought it'd be a fun to design a paper craft of the character, and use the original artwork to create the models texture.

The project only took about two hours to design, so here's the footage sped up from start to finish. Enjoy!

I'm toying around with the idea of doing some 24 hour live streams, just going through the requests on this thread and making quick and simple models. The video making process can be stressful and dull because the design might take just 3-4 hours, but the filming, editing and diagrams to explain the process end up taking a couple of days.

Perhaps just focusing on the designs in bulk and then making a short video after the fact talking about the techniques used and concepts within the model would make the process more enjoyable?

Thoughts on 24hour papercraft stream?
>>
>>562623
Sounds good!
Also, i have a request, namely buff dedede from kirby star allies, a newly released kirby game
i think this guy could be interesting

24 hr streams... Can't say I'm a big fan of the idea. While I do like the though of more viewer interaction and participation; I like the work and comedy that goes into your more polished vids.
However, I understand that editing takes a huge chunk of one's life.

Makoto Shishio.
>>
>>562831
You have no idea how much I needed a simple and vague request like that right now.

I'll take it a step further and add an action feature, when you pull on the cats legs the wings flap.
>>
>>563644
Have you done any vehicles like motorcycles or airplanes maybe a boat?
>>
>>563661
I've done a few planes and boats before, mostly during my educational gig. I've designed 3 different spitfires, they were always fun to design because of the shape of the plane and the challenge of making the wings thin,, sturdy and locked in place without visible supports.
>>
>>563644

Flying cat update :-

The texture work is now finished, I changed the wing mechanism a little so it works more smoothly. Now I just need to edit the video together and the model will go into early access.
>>
>>563669
Obvious opposite/evil version now needed.
>>
>>563683
I changed the legs so that I could flip texture over (so it wasn't just white) with this idea in mind.

Sad, I show my kids this thread all the time! And the vids... Great stuff!!!
>>
(1/2) >>563765

Once again, the negativity and edgy nature of this thread scratches at the surface of an interesting question, why do I put my face in the thumbnails, and why do I present myself as a host instead of focusing solely on the design at hand?

Let’s start with the thumbnails, getting people to click on a video, and explaining the content of a video in a single image is a design problem like any other, how can we present a 15 minute video in a single, tiny image? I put myself in the thumbnails to show the design process is hosted by a person and the video isn’t just a speed-art style of content. I’ve clicked many videos about art, illustration and design hoping to learn about the process of the topic presented only to end up watching the process fast forwarded without explanation or commentary. The videos include commentary, cut aways and a host and so I want to present that in the thumbnail usually with a still frame from the video itself.

>>563768
“Fright night is exactly right, because the still images from the video are always edited, usually to make me look either better, or worse depending on what I’m trying to present in the video. (See image attached as an example.) It’s not a coincidence so many Youtubers use faces in their thumbnails to attract potential viewers, our brains are wired to spot faces and so adding a face will help draw the viewer’s eye, but we can take this a step further by altering the face to looks just a little off. I’m sure we’ve all seen it, faces usually edited, the eyes are just a bit too big or small, the nose is put to one side or the mouth is exaggerated. Making the face into an uncanny valley scenario will bring in additional viewers.
>>
File: Abe Head.png (1.33 MB, 2005x1257)
1.33 MB
1.33 MB PNG
(2/2) >>563786

This isn’t a technique I like to over use, I think it’s all too often used for click bait, but by making myself appear a little more run-down, making the shadows around my eyes exaggerated and making myself look even more skeletal it can help to show the general vibe of the video. Take the last episode for example (>>563703), the video was a disaster in which I repeatedly point out how much of a mess I am, so adding to this effect with spots, wrinkles and dark rings around the eyes helps sum this up in a single image. Plus it’s fun to make yourself look goofy or add false face paint to match the theme of the episode.

As for why I host the videos rather than just focus on the design, it seems to me anyone could make a show showcasing how to design papertoys, heck I’d love to see more of them. So it makes sense to make my content more unique by making myself a key part of it, rather than just what I can create. Hope that clears things up.

>>563765 Is there anything from that game with a really neat design? I’m not too familiar with it, all I know is there are people with robot bits.

With only 11 days left in April I'm happy to reveal this month's supporter exclusive, the Vent Crawler. The largest model in the advanced series to date, this pastel coloured robot emits cooling air jets from the many vents on its back to keep the massive machines it lives beneath operating at the most efficient temperature.

I've not really been following this football thing, did we win? Is /po/ doing well? How do I become the commentator for our team to feed my ever growing paper-based ego?

I did design some trophies a long time ago as a commission, but they've aged pretty poorly (I'd just gotten a copy of photoshop and it shows I had no idea how to do metallic effects).

I would be happy to make a new trophy template but I need to know what's going on.
