No, universities are private institutions. They're no more public than starbucks.

This is THANKS to neo-liberalism and conservatism making them private organizations by defunding them and selling off public assets.
>>
Public universities, yes. A lot of schools have preacher guys who stand outside on campus and yell at students about blasphemy and whatnot, it's public land so they aren't removed. Professional speakers are certainly no different.

If you can't have freedom of a speech at a fucking University, where else can you?

Literally it is a place designed for political and social discourse to clash, unless it's dealing in a specific industry like medicine or agriculture. You contain the turmoil of controversy in a university without unleashing it upon the world.

Now, controversial thought is in the open and the response of colleges is to retreat inwards and construct extremely narrow alternate realities.

It really goes to show that

a) Don't let women hold authority in a place of learning or national defense
b) Don't let jews hold authority in a place of learning or national defense
c) Paying for universities is not actually a good thing, since it forces colleges to just sell an experience to trustafarians and SJWs, rather than have an environment that students are drawn to naturally.

Hate Speech is a made up-word and the concept doesn't exist.

Anything you can construe as "hate speech" (inciting violence, deliberate slander, impersonation) already had an established definition beforehand.
>>

That's right.
It's not a license, it's a human right.

This is the problem with our third world population. The niggers, muslims, and spics would rather kill people who disagree with them than engage in an intellectual clash of ideas. It's an inevitability of the mongrelization of our country. 40% of Millenials are nonwhite, and 40% of them do not believe in free speech as a right. That's not a coincidence. I'm not saying it's 1:1, but if we keep mongrelizing, we will lose this right that we inherited as white Americans. Europe has already done away with the idea of free speech entirely and the increased rate of replacement in recent years is astronomical.

Everyone should have a right to speak if they go through the proper channels and pay the money to do so

no, nobody has a right to an audience at a public university. otherwise every crazy bum off the street would be up there talking all day.

here are some better questions:

should universities ignore these speakers? if so, why?

why do so many university students respond with violence when confronted with different ideas, as seen in Berkeley?

are public universities deciding who speaks based primarily on politics? and if so, does this mean the university is a political body? if so, does this endanger their public funding?
>>
>>122166832

>>
>>122168513
I agree. A private institution doesn't have to give you a platform to speak. However, what's happening here is a little different. A controversial figure who is INVITED to speak at the University should be given a platform to do so, even if a proportion of the student body is angered/appalled by their beliefs. That is where the free speech aspect comes into play.
>>
>>122166525

Nah, you're right, controversy is bad.

Hate speech is inciting violence against a minority group. Even Spencer the Nazi larper never actually called for violence, all he does is express his political views (namely that whites deserve a white only country - this statement does not prejudicate the extermination of all nonwhites)

Stifling opposing political opinions, even if you don't agree with them, is a road leading directly into tyranny

nope. Hate speech isn't a thing in the US. I can say I dislike jews, or you can say that you wish all whites were dead. Its your opinion and your right to be an asshole or rude or impolite.

In the US, only threatening speech is a crime and only crimes can be prosecuted. Like if you say you intend to kill me because Im a jew, then that's a criminal threat and you can't do that.

It must be a specific threat, not just 'gee I hate that class of people'.

Surely if people want to attend to hear them speak, genuinely and not just to shout and throw stuff, then there's an argument for them to speak.

What we have are some people deciding that others with certain types of politics should be excluded from venues, regardless of what others may feel. They achieve this through obnoxious protesting which makes it impossible for speakers to attend without risk to themselves of others.

What I find worst about this, is that people with 'extreme' politics, typically right wing, are not challenged or debated, they're just gagged and censored. It just looks like the left doesn't have the ability to debate them, or can't be bothered. Yet they criticise The right wing for being intolerant and silencing opposition.

Convenient how Antifa doesn't have that policy for Muslims.

What happened to "I Disapprove of What You Say, But I Will Defend to the Death Your Right to Say It"? Back when the ACLU stood for something.

Once we lose free speech, we're finished. No matter how "moderate" our views were, we'd have to worry about whether face Antifa thugs approve. That's why the flag-waving Nazi guys are on the front lines of freedom of speech, even if they promise to destroy it. America 101 people.

His is a stupid fucking question... of course they do (and depending on the rules of the college/state the college may also have the right to bar them from entering).... if you don't want to hear it don't show up. Protesting puts them front and center. More publicity than they would ever get from just doing a speech, but crazy leftists can't see that apparently.

Of course it's a Canadian who couldn't see the obvious strawman in the very first panel.
