This was the correct choice. Gunther is a guy Cena wanted to face and will give him the best retirement match possible.

Plus now you have a little story built into the match (because Cena doesn't have any more appearances because they wasted them on bullshit), on the guy that makes people tap out against the never give up ultimate babyface.

If Knight had won, not only would the match have been less good, but Cena was much more popular and we would've had a Cody situation where Cena gets cheered over him.

I think people are more pissed because the retirement tour was inexcusably bad and they wasted so many potential matches on bullshit that will now never happen.
