If there are any oldfags left, where do they hide? What board is that last bastion?
>>
They either moved on with their lives or they're just anons like you and me. An anonymous imageboard is not the best method of contacting individuals.
>>
there are a lot of long-time posters on /mu/ and /sp/, and some left on /pol/. you just have to find the threads they like.

I've heard some of the orginalfags (2004-2007-ish) went back to isolated IRC communities. But really, it must be really fucking depressing for those who still stick around, I mean, just fucking look at this, take note of the amount of active users and compare it to today's number. An absolute drop in an ocean of piss, even if all the people who browsed then still browse today, and that's from fucking 2009.

>>1897560
You'd be probably right about /jp/, according to some polls /jp/ was the oldest board on average, or at least was when those polls were made.

>>1897557
>there are a lot of long-time posters on /mu/ and /pol/
lmao, /mu/ is the most underage board and even /pol/ ""oldfags""" who came to the site after /news/ was created are a tiny minority given the influx of new users the board received.
>>
>>1897563
I've been here since 2007 and I'm a /pol/tard.

>>
>>1897738
What makes you think otaku culture is dying?
>>
>>1897740
Japanese culture in general is fading as the country isn't able to produce the content it once did (aging country)
Not to mention just look around you, there use to be more weeb threads outside of anime boards.
Now even boards like /a/ are strictly porn and anime casual.
Though I am only using 4chan as a measure of this, I don't use places like reddit or other sites to gauge it. Who knows maybe reddit has a thriving otaku culture.
>>
>>1897736
You being from 2007 doesn't change the fact that /pol/ is the board with the most new people who came to the site for all the wrong reasons. Out of all the boards, /pol/ received the greatest influx of new users in the last couple of years, it's simple mathematics.
>>1897742
You're talking drivel, that's just the end result of a demographic shift due to 4chan's ever increasing notoriety over the years bringing in more people who have no interest in anime, rather than a shrinkage in the anime fandom. 4chan simply got too big for a site rooted in jap shit.
>>
>>1897749
I wonder if 4chan is still the place to go if youre into anime. I would imagine a subreddit is pretty big as well

Image filenames aren't really the best method to go about doing this --if you should be doing this at all, since "member since X" faggotry was one of the reasons moot and shii were so adamant about anonymity--
Pic related, crawled through the remains of the chanarchive and got this image, I could've just renamed any image I had but this sends the message a lot more clearly.

When did I say redditor, dumbass? If you came to 4chan in 2007, saw people making swastikas in Habbo and thought it was anything more than us pushing peoples buttons then you are unironically a retard and were cancer from the day you got here. The fact that you still haven't figured out by now that 4chan was never a right-wing hugbox is just more of a testament to your absolute retardation.

>b-but /pol/ is still posting swastikas to push peoples buttons and is therefore old /b/!
/pol/ is still doing the same old song and dance that got tired out years ago. only now they take themselves seriously. The humor on /pol/ is stale and predictable and if you're still laughing at the "lol we drew nazi stuff on other website xD" then you're part of the problem that keeps this entire community stagnated thanks to the newfag explosion that's spread across all of 4chan. No, I'm not saying racism isn't funny, I'm saying the /pol/ brand of racism isn't. It's the same jokes that we were making 12 years ago, only repackaged in a more cancerous, LARPing fashion.

You are using a strawman again, you Redditor and putting words in my post.
I never implied 4chan was a right wing hugebox but you went on and got triggered for some reason about it.
You are literally going out of your way to get triggered by something I never said. You are triggering your self.

First lurked in 2005, I'm mostly here on /qa/ and sometimes on /jp/ or /pol/. First board was /b/, which in those days was more of an amalgamation of /a/jp/pol/v/soc/ than simply porn dumps. There was no (you), no catalog in those days. Half the threads required sifting through avalanches of desu posting, mudkipz, or slowpoke.jpg. Bans were public and arbitrary, more akin to being struck by lightning than for committing a specific rule violation. Sage bombing was common. Despite all of this, anons in general were more genki and less cynical. Makes much of the current day whining seem pathetic by comparison.
>>
>>1898111
The fact that people have been complaining about it since the days of usenet and that it's still going strong, you're just upset against a different group of fans in some pathetic e-peen war which has been played out a million times.

Sad to hear, ever since the chanarchive was lost I've taken extra measures to properly back up any historic data I can find.
If you ever find anything you'd like to share, then you know where to post it.
>>1898373
Nobody has to prove his worth before the anonymous crowd, the sooner you'd get that through your head the sooner this place will recover.
>>
>>1898373
Well, discord is like IRC with more functionality (while being a proprietary botnet) and all the oldfags came from BBS forums and IRC to 4chan anyway, they just migrated back when 4chan became bigger and shitty for them. I could be wrong, but "hurr we iz anonmolous" culture didn't really exist back then like it does today.

This is cockowl. Back him up. Some random anon drew him in an owlday thread long ago. To my memory, owlday occurred in 04, as by the time WoW launched we already had the o rly owl, a meme which came out of owlday. (every day is owlday)

I took a liking to this penis bird, and saved it. I attempted to turn it into a meme off and on for the next few years to no success. One day i lost it when my hard drive died. All my old images from this era were on it, they are gone forever.

I had assumed that was that, who else would have saved cockowl? But to my amazement, some months later, i saw it posted! At least one other anonymous had saved this crudely drawn image of an owl with a penis for a head. I then saved it.

This is the oldest image in my possession, my computer records it as may 5th 2005. This is the date i re-acquired it after having lost it.

I started out on /b/ way back in 2005, mainly posted there but went on some other boards, mainly /s/. Took a long break from 2008-2011 or so and came back when /new/ was still around and followed the Totenham (sp?) riots in London, then jewt closed the board, so I went to another chan's /pol/. Still stayed on 4chan itself, mainly lurking /r9k/ (although I was there when moot first made it and the board didn't even have a board culture yet). When /new/ came back as /pol/ I was there for a bit, but the board steadily became worse. /int/ was my home board for a long time. Now I'm mainly on /tv/ and /fit/ but I'll go on other boards every now and then, mainly lurking. I shitpost on twitter more than I do here. 4chan was the beginning of my internet journey, and twitter is the end of the line.

I don't think there would be as many lifers here if it was easier to "make it", i.e., get a good job, get married, have kids, and become an adult.

I'm going to be here forever or until the site shuts down due to a second civil war breaking out and government hackers/infrastructure failure destroying it, since that's what it's going to take.

>>

Regardless of how much young adults cry over teens, Discord is hot right now and has a big blob of little 4chan anime dudes. Forums and especially IRC are pretty outdated mediums of communication. The way communities function reminds me of old forums from the early 00's. The main downside is that it's a jungle trying to find good servers, but the same was true for cozy little forums back in the day. Hands-off moderation is the most important thing.
>>
>>1905911
I've heard lots of good things about Discord, but I haven't been able to find a single good server. All the ones I've found are huge Reddit monstrosities with 7.9 billion members and no sense of community. I don't know how I was able to do it, but I used to be able to find forums just via Google. I can't seem to do that with Discord.
>>
>>1905760
I used to post on a little forum called "kokiri kids", one of the many remnants after the nintendo of america forum broke up. Around the time that most people had at least their own invisionfree forum or five, maybe '01-'04

>reee invisionfree is RUINING 4chan and killing generals just anyone can pop up a forum at anytime it's too easy cancer

>>
>>1905915
Yeah you gotta snoop around cool kids for their rarer more expensive invites, or go to shittier servers that are easier to find that loosely have a userbase you are looking for, socialize until you find cool-headed people and ask them if they know of any good servers.
>>
>>1905920
But how do you find said cool kids? Hell, I'm having a hard time finding even the shittier servers. I wish that I could go back to the time when awesome internet communities were a dime a dozen.

I think there's some rose tinted glasses there, I had good times on old forums but I was a teenager and when it comes to interactions there was a lot of stuff I'd consider to be purposeless drama or just fuckin dumb nowadays. Might just be me, though/

Dunno what to tell you for server surfing, depends on your interests and what kind of people you want to talk to. Links get posted occasionally on most boards here. I only know where gay anime dudes and faggot lolicons hang out, and those links can pop up anywhere you see gay anime dudes or faggot lolicons hanging out. Just sorta how it works I think. There could be some kind of sophisticated server search engine I'm not aware of honestly, I'm not very knowledgeable of the software. I just use it.
>>
>>1897563
>went back to isolated IRC communities.
I went on the IRC back in 05-06 because of some stupid shit that got me banned, and back in the day, being banned actually prevented you from actually going on to boards, so it was actually a punishment back then. Never went back to IRC for anything else 4chan related, although used it for other places.
"REEEE" all you want, but the truth is, there are really only two places an oldfag can go: stay here, or go to reddit. I feel like reddit is such a fucking safe space tumblr-friendly shithole that any post that doesn't fit into their mentality is instantly removed. And anyone who has been here lurking and posting for at least 13 years can see that nuChan has become exactly the type of place that the era of 4chan I came from made fun of and trolled relentlessly. Hell, even the memes have pretty much stagnated to fucking pepe and wojack memes.

>even the memes have pretty much stagnated to fucking pepe and wojack memes
This is what bothers me the most about 4chan now. Almost everything is derived from those two. Every time I think it's finally dying, someone comes up with a new mutation. Most recent is dumb Wojak.
>>
My standard board is /v/, usually it's pointless shitposting but occasional kami threads emerge, like the recent oldschool VN thread or last year's loli game chart thread. Some SaGa discussions also make it worthwhile.

Good enough for my needs at least. Have to sift through lots of feces though.

/tg/ has changed very little since it was added, although I think it's less having a lot of oldfags and more having a very well documented history and a userbase that's very good at acclimating newcomers to the board's culture

/jp/ was the same way for a while, but around 2016-ish it was overrun by literally autistic Deviantart kids

Honestly, as I've gotten older and used 4chan more, I've realized that really new newfags are just as good as oldfags, simply because they contribute more content. Piss on reddit and youtube all you want, but a lot of these kids come to 4chan because they've seen the best of 4chan, and want to make content as good as the stuff they've seen reposted on their homesite.

2004 fag here. Mostly was just on /a/ and /f/ till around late 2006 though and didn't get on here on an almost daily basis till 2007. I was still mostly on random anime forum sites and other random places online till I started really getting on /b/ a lot during 2007.

Yes, that is the case for myself anyways. I've found several other homes on the internet. I still frequent 4chan from time to time. I usually do a monthly "tour" checking out content on every single board here. But the main boards when I was here everyday were the following.

Originalfags are 03~04, maybe 05 but that's pushing it. They were the originators who kept the site alive long enough to attract a substantially userbase for 24/7 discussion. People like me who came during 06 are what people refer to as oldfags because it was before the first really big mainstream attention that attracted a huge influx of people who found the site in a completely tertiary manner and made significant impact on the site globally, enough to permanently alter the boards vibes. The "new" era, hence people calling them newfags.
A lot of the originalfags, though there weren't many of them compared to later groups, came from highly pseudonymous not really mainstream commumities online and brought it in with them. This is why initially there was such a huge amount of trip and namefaggotry. The core appeal of anonymity was more of an oldfag thing since the site was now less obscure and more and more young people were using social media with a name and face. A lot of the splinter groups which popped and kind of faded into obscurity where made by originalfags who wanted less of the large amorphous mess 4chan was and more of the circlejerk type community 4chan started out as, so many of them fucked off.
The oldfags who stayed on through the massive influxes during 2007~8 and even again during 2009~12 for some boards pretty much can't leave. It has become such a persistent part of your existence that you find yourself online one way or another and reading through some random thread. You don't really leave, instead you take board holidays and start to spend more or most of your time in different boards so in the few months, even years after finally coming back to a former haunt, it feels different. Not good, just different. Enough to keep the dopamine doing its job. Oldfags don't really leave, they die out.

Don't mistake the facade for age, lol. It's an act. Most of the community stormed out of 4chan into various spinoff boards in stages during 2010~2012, after it became flooded with /a/ runoff. Since around 2012 it has been a revival attempt at forcing some 二次元裏(東方) board, which has ultimately failed and lost to the looming shadow of generals.

Mate, there is more anime, manga, games, porn, etc. being made now more than ever.
Don't conflate EOPs with the actual Japanese market. Young adults have been and are currently being lambasted by the conservative media in Japan for not "growing up" and "starting families".
The sort of otaku goods 4chan is all about is making mega bucks in Japan at current. Rakuten recently enough bought out Kobo and are making huge profits off selling ebooks; selling manga.

Those were the images that best represented old /jp/ to me, at least among those I saved. I really wish I had saved more over the years, but I kinda took them for granted and assumed things would always remain the same. Really a shame. There are no pics like that ever made for modern /jp/, because there's just nothing left to talk about when it comes to the board. Everything that made it interesting was banned and now only lame generals are left.

Finally, here's a song that both does a great job at representing old /jp/ and at expressing what it is to be a NEET at the same time.

I'm 30 years old, but I only started coming here when I was 21/22 and it was pretty much played out by then. Already, /b/ would have threads about Habbo Hotel, saying, "Why don't we do ebin troles like this any more?" I realise now that the people posting those will have been people like me: people who discovered 4chan through the mainstream, and wanted to be part of something special, but it had passed.

Since 2009-2010, I can assure you that 4chan has not been good at any point. The main /b/ meme when I started was "newfags can't triforce", and it had already descended into a community of tourists, waiting around for /b/ shit to happen without contributing anything.

The best places I have hung out on 4chan were probably /sp/ generals. The best ever thread I've been in was a 2014 World Cup thread on /sp/.

Modern /qa/ is, by far and away, the absolute nadir of 4chan culture. It's the worst. I like meta-discussion but the whole board should really just be shut down.

The board I currently visit most is /g/, which was good enough to get me a job a couple of years ago, but is now terrible. Maybe it's always been terrible and I've just lost my tolerance for it, but you get sick of seeing the same autism every single day. The whole philosophy of 4chan is "people looking for a new kind of autism", and that's why it's dying. Also, memes are so mainstream now that our unique selling point has been hijacked and we have nothing left.
>>

Odd /qa/ certainly doesn’t have that philosophy and for the most part people here are genuine and not filled with anger(save for a certain wannabe troll). I would also say that /qa/ does have a unique selling point but you might not be able to see it right away. Certainly /qa/ is not the worst board.

I've been on here since around 2005, a friend who discovered /b/ told me about this site and I explicitly remember him telling me to be careful clicking on stuff because it might be cp, ended up browsing /a/ instead (not anymore) though since I’d already been into anime for a while. I come to /qa/ and /v/ often, one other imageboard and a forum which I'd rather not name. I mainly lurk /v/ instead of posting, used to browse /fit/ a bit as well, I went there a few months ago and the drop in quality astounded me, but it probably coincided with gyms becoming more popular or something.

Anyway it’s time for the obligatory moan. At this point the biggest problem people have with the site is self-inflicted, times change and there are new generations of posters pouring into the site and the internet in general, it’s just another year in the line of Septembers. I miss the way things used to be as well but let’s face it you’ve had years to learn to deal with it and if you can’t come to terms with the way things are then you need to take a step back, relax and just let them have it, the internet is constantly evolving, it’s never stood still and it won’t start doing it for you now no matter how hard you try and fight back the tide, 4chan wouldn’t have changed no matter how hard you cried in the past, and it won’t now.

I’m aware of the importance of the culture you value but at some point you need to realise that you can’t relive the past no matter how hard you try, and start thinking about what you want to do, instead of what’s already been done. I see people complain about how everything has gone to shit, site is full of newfags and there’s no OC, but these are most likely the very same people who act as gatekeepers, the ones who proactively stifle discussion and the creation of new content in the first place, because new is always bad no matter what, it’s a vicious cycle and a complete waste of time.

It's just that the cheerful nature got replaced with cynicalism and malicious trolling, and creativity stagnated due to the establishment of "social norms" alongside the heavy handed moderation.

Secret club mentality (I don't blame them, 4fags are a hassle) and the fact that many newcomers don't bother exploring the sphere.
