The sun beats down overhead as you walk down the road from your house, each step is quick and practiced with this road practically being an extension of your home in your head. For the past month you’ve been walking it every day to get your mission assignments, the work has been grueling but at the end of each day you feel a little bit less tired, more alert. Sharing the work with your team has made it less lonely and boring as well, Katsu’s seemed a lot less down lately, and Hideaki doesn’t spend nearly as much time at home training. Things are getting better, but you do have to wonder if Jun-sensei even cares. Each day you all show up, get your missions and pill from him, then he just sort of waits there until you’re done. As you walk, a familiar face and voice join you.

“How’s it going Yoko?” Takuya’s expression conveys a lot of pain and exertion, doesn’t he have leg weights on? He did last time you ran into him. “Your training been going as well as mine has?” He forces a grin in a manner you’re sure is the same goading he does every time before you spar. You force Oreo to hiss in response, the mister kept empty for now. Last time you met him, he complained about being put with a Inuzuka and an Aburame, so you’re wondering why he’s so upbeat about his training. Clans have been kind of a bother to you since the conversation you overheard in the woods, and how cutthroat they can be.

“Don’t have time to spar, I’ve never been late.” Today just feels different, maybe you’re finally starting to feel different about turning 13. That was a few weeks ago, your mom made cupcakes and dad brought home some fun little experiments. Sure, you almost lit the house on fire, but it was fun. “Looks like you don’t either.” The pale color of your skin is very clear in the sunlight, as is the immense weight focused on Takuya’s legs and arms. The effects of both your burdens are very clear as you walk without looking and being careful about moving your head at all. You’ve become used to it.

“Right. Just wanted to check in, Sawako said you were making a new jutsu.” Of course she talked about it, she’d tell someone what she got them for their birthdays if asked. Even though you never told anyone about your birthday. You’re not mad. It was a family day.

“Made. I’ve perfected it.” Lies, you know there are ways to improve it, but it does what it does the best it can.

“Yeah, well I developed a new seal that’s going to change the world as we know it!”

“Sure thing.”

They're good questions, Cairn.

“So how will it change the world? What does it do?” The seal is an interesting thought, if it really would change the world then you’d have to acknowledge that.

“It’s a secret. Can’t let it slip or someone might replicate it, and this is the type of thing whole styles are based on.” Okay, you get the feeling he might be overselling it.

“So...how’s your team been?” He actually does end up smiling, then frowns a bit, then shakes his head. Poor thing’s probably already tired just from keeping up. Besides, the Aburame are a bunch of dead-faced elitists and the Inuzuka barely take their position seriously. At least you had brooding and elitist separately, he has them in one teammate then the other one probably barely cares. That last one would annoy you so much

“Oh, well, they’re not as bad as I originally thought. Goro’s the worst, but Chikako is actually nice. And her dog likes me surprisingly.” Why is that surprising? He’s like a dog too. “Not quite what I was expecting from my sensei either, he’s basically just into Taijutsu, been training us in it almost exclusively. These weights are actually the third set I’ve had. ”It could be worse. How’s yours?”

“Same deal, but they’re both okay. Hideaki is an idiot but he tries, Katsu’s just kind of a downer but I don’t think that’s his fault.” He nods.

“Well you were poisoning yourselves, right? How’s that going?”

“Good, never felt better.” Eh, that might be true.

Remembering the discussion about clans, you recall how some clan is trying to force two people together for benefit. It sounded really creepy, like they weren’t even discussing people even though one of them was a part of their family. “Takuya, can you keep an ear to the ground about someone named Kon?”

“Sure, why?” You discuss what happened and what you know. You know Kon and his accomplice smoke, which probably rules out the Aburame. One of them is a brother to the girl they’re setting up. They’re trying to bring some boy into the clan for knowledge he has, one who isn’t very good and they called useless. Their Intelligence score on the tests weren’t good from how they were talking about it.

Takuya has his eyes open as you talk. “Uhm. I’m not sure what to make of that. I’ll keep an eye out.” As he walks past the training field, he waves back. Part of you suspects that Takuya might even be the mark for them now that you think about it. No way to be sure yet though. Katsu is already at the training field holding something in his hands, cupping them around it. He holds it close to his chest and nods his head for you to come over to him

As you do he smiles. “I caught a frog.” He opens his hands a little and you can see the tiny creature hopping around in the dark of them. It ribbits in response and tries to squirm for the hole, but Katsu holds it in the crook between his thumb and his index finger gently.

“That’s so cute, shouldn’t you release it though?” He nods, then crouches down.

“I was using it to practice, don’t worry, it’ll be fine.” Katsu lets it go and it lingers on the ground, hopping in place before he shoos it off. Hideaki seems to be almost late again as he sprints down the road, almost tripping as he hits grass and barreling into Katsu before recovering. The Uchiha stands up and dusts himself off.

“I brought work gloves this time!” He holds up three pairs and looks at Katsu and your hands. Both covered in gloves. He sheepishly puts the two extra pairs in his pockets. Katsurou laughs, something you still have trouble getting used to. It’s weird to see him in this good of a mood after being so reserved when you first met him.

“You seriously forgot that we already have pairs? Yoko’s worn hers from day one!”

“Uh, no. They’re spares. For me. Two spares. Need to have a spare spare pair as well.”

Katsu can’t stop laughing and it’s kind of infectious, so you smile. Jun walks out of the forest and sighs, you wonder if he was sleeping there. He looks serious, and you can see only one paper in his hand today as opposed to three. That… doesn’t bode well.

“Only one? This some sort of holiday or did another team already take all the missions?” You smile at the wit and pet Oreo a bit. He’s just going to hand you all a paper and send you off to pick up rocks or something. Give you your poisons first. Oddly, he doesn’t seem to have the pills out.

“We’re taking a C-rank.” Jun says with no fanfare whatsoever. “It will span at least two weeks and we will be working with another team. Training is giving way to the mission.” He holds up the paper and begins walking toward a dummy he set up a while ago. “The poisons should wear off by lunch, be back here by then and be ready for travel. Carry light or you will fall behind. This is the beginning of your real instruction.”

Katsu’s smile drops, then he looks around. “Really? This isn’t some joke or lie?” He seems nervous as Jun glares up at him, his gaze like ice.

Hideaki starts running towards his home and Katsu joins him in that direction. They’re probably going to try to pick up supplies too, but you can do that as well. Just… what are you going to pack or buy? If you really will be on the move for two weeks with another genin team, you’re probably going to need a lot, and if Oreo gets damaged you’ll have to fix him. But Jun said to pack light.

You could bring some ingredients for poisons, then you could make more poison if you run out, possibly even mix with some of them with new ingredients out on the road. Two weeks is a long time, probably a long distance too, you could find some really interesting stuff. Bringing some empty containers for storing it might be wise.

Of course, extra parts for Oreo would be good too, and the tools to fix him, maybe some other maintenance gear? Nobody else would have the tools you need for it. If he got broken you’d have to make due without the snake wrapped around your shoulders and… that would be bad.

If you bring the black book you could continue your studying and notes on the road, which might be a good idea. Would mean you’d have to bring paper, pencils, your other notes, but you wouldn’t have to memorize everything. Even though you can.

But what about the other team? You know Katsu and Hideaki, but what if they don’t listen to you? Teamwork is important, you could bring some candy for them, that might help build rapport. Or be good to relax with. On that note, maybe you should take your plushie in case, it wouldn’t be the same but it’d make you sleep better.

Deciding to stop by the carpenter’s before getting your chemicals and containers together, you pick up the wood bits you need for Oreo with a smile on your face. You’re excited, and very nervous, maybe they’ll be an older Genin team and you can impress them with your puppetry! The lag on your vision is starting to shrink, and you’re finding yourself feeling much more upbeat as you shop. Grabbing enough parts to fully repair the puppet twice, you slam them in a bag on the counter. The owner gives you an odd look as you pay for your parts, a small bit of color returning to your skin as you pay but leaving you decidedly paler. Like you have makeup on. You think it looks nice.

>Stamina restored, and then some! Stamina is now 1.5!
>Speed partially restored, now at 2.0!
>Something’s different…

Walking out of the store and into the sun that actually syncs up with your body movements is nice, and the run home takes almost no time compared to your normal pace. Mom and Dad should be home for lunch early, so you can spend time packing while you wait. First things you grab are the containers, those aren’t urgent emergency stuff so you can dig through the bag for them when you need them. You grab a metal box, a wooden tea box, some glass vials in their own metal carrying box, leather bags, two large canteens, and some eyedroppers. Samples are always good when you don’t know what you’re dealing with. If you’re lucky, this mission could yield quite a bit of reward. Pulling out a large handful of needles from a cabinet, you bind them together and put them in a large pouch. Then another. And another. Enough for three weeks if need be. You’re a big girl now, have to act like it.

Starting to pack up your chemistry materials, you put them in their own little case with all the fixings. Then you add in all the basic chemicals you could ask for, strapped to the top of the case in labelled metal cans and tubes. This should be more than enough to be prepared for any situation. As you grab one beaker, it slips from your hand and you quickly fire a thread from your tongue at it, saving it from hitting the floor. Weird, you didn’t even really go off sight to know where it would be in the air.

The front door opens and large work boots thump in that you recognize as Dad’s, the crinkle of paper meaning he has to have groceries. Mondays are their half days. He looks at the scene and bursts out laughing. Your cheeks turn red as you pull the beaker up and grab it, then wash it off. Dad drops the groceries and grabs at his gut. The laughing continues for a bit “Yoko, you’re home early.” He sighs out as he tries to stop laughing.

“Yeah, I’m packing, going on a two week mission.” Immediately the smile drops.

“Oh, do you need help?” He sounds a bit… sad?

”Sure! I was just packing up my chemistry shop for the road.” You rush over and give him a hug, then look up to see him smiling slightly again. He still looks tired, never looks well-rested, but thinking about how much C-ranks are supposed to pay, it occurs that even divided eight ways it wouldn’t be insignificant. Less than the D-ranks you’ve been doing but the money saved because you weren’t at home might make it worth it for them. Dad walks over to the cabinet and starts pulling out bits you haven’t used and replacing some tools for the set of chemistry gear. Some of them even look mechanical.

He stops, then looks down and picks up the groceries to put on the table. “You know, honey, Mom and I are very proud of you. I don’t think we say that as much as we should. There’s a lot to be said about it, but that’s the gist, you make us proud.” There’s a moment of silence before you respond.

“Thank you Dad, that means a lot.” You aren’t really sure if there’s anything else to say, that’s not something you can just brush off or not let hit you. It does mean a lot. “You don’t need to say it more often though.”

“Well that’s nice, because I’d probably forget.” He laughs and you laugh as well. The door opens again and Mom comes in with a large box in her hands, covering her face.

“Hiro! Take this!” Dad sighs and rushes over as she takes off her shoes, then he picks up the box and takes it to the table. “We got a new coffee machine for the hospital so they let me take the old one.” Eventually, Mom notices you’re there. “Oh, hey Yoyo, you’re back early.”

“Yeah, packing for a two week mission.” Dad is giving you an expression like someone who is inches away from a landmine. If Mom goes all doting you might not get lunch before you have to leave!

Mom does everything in her power to stop our ninja career.
>>
You lean over to her as she processes the information. “Don’t bring it up again, Dad had a whole fit about it and he just calmed down.” The whisper is not audible to the man as Mom nods her head, frowning but seeming to bear the pressure. If there’s one thing you know, it’s that she cares.

“He was upset?” She asks, disbelieving. Well he was, it just wasn’t a huge fit. “But...he looks calm.”

“He always does.” You add in and she looks at Dad, he waves sheepishly. Mom lets out a sigh and hugs you.

“Okay sweetie, just be safe. I’ll be strong for Dad.” It wasn’t really a lie, just an exaggeration, and Dad looks pleased with the outcome as Mom ends the embrace and goes over to him to do the same. She says something and he quickly turns serious and goes over to start setting up the machine, leaving you to finish the packing and relax until lunch.

The smell of cooking chicken fills the house and Mom sets to making some grilled vegetables, it all comes with steam and heat so the windows are open. You nuzzle up to Oreo and go over your pack one more time, each part in the exact order you’d need it, the extra parts for Oreo on top. Dad finishes his job quickly and walks over, then gives you a kiss on the cheek which you promptly wipe off.

“You know, now that you’re getting older, it might be okay for… if you’re very careful… okay for you to have some more serious chemicals. The kinds that could really hurt someone. I’d want you to be safe out there.”

Wait, he’s talking about the kind of chemicals that can actually be lethal? You’ve never got the chance to handle those, you don’t blame him for that at all, you could hurt yourself. But he does have a point, even though you get the feeling he’s going behind Mom’s back to do this.

Also, it's kind of amusing considering how abjectly common deadly chemicals actually are. Eyedrops can cause heart attacks if ingested instead of used properly, cherry pits can be boiled down for cyanide, and chrysanthemum extract is literally the base chemical for an entire family of neurotoxins.

“Right now?”

“Sure, just be careful.” You rush off to get them. It’s not like you didn’t know how to use them or handle them, you were just doing what Dad said you could. Now he’s saying you can work with these, so you’ll take ‘em! Loading with strong acids and other such terrible tricks, you pack them with the others clearly labelled. You’ll hope you don’t need to use them, but they’ll be worth it if you do. Giving Dad another hug, you wash your hands for lunch.

Mom sets down the skewer of meat and veggies on top of rice and you dig in. You didn’t realize how hungry you were, but maybe the poison was killing your appetite. Either way it’s the most delicious thing you’ve had in weeks! You get seconds as well and chat with Mom and Dad about your team and everything, but they’re always looking at each other when you’re eating so maybe there’s something you aren’t getting. Putting it out of mind, you pick up your backpack and head off to the training field, both of them waving behind you. The poison must be wearing off more, you have a lot of energy.

>Speed has returned to 3.0
>You feel more alert

Your feet move faster, practically flying over holes compared to what you got used to, and you’re not even getting winded. The world is more clear, no lag, and the return of your sight doesn’t dull the new awareness of scent and sound you have. If anything it sharpens it. Even at the speeds you’re going, you catch sight of Katsu checking out something in the general store. Must be getting poison or something. If you stopped now, you probably wouldn’t even be close to late.

Huh, small world, Sawako’s there too. Checking out shuriken and stuff, testing weights, all the kind of things you know she’d be bad at. Maybe it’s worth your time to help, and you haven’t talked to her in a while. You slow down and see something odd happen. The two go about their shopping and testing, then they catch sight of each other and wave. They’re actually talking! Katsu is talking to someone who isn’t forced to spend time with him! That’s great. Maybe that’s why he’s so happy, or maybe he’s doing it because he’s happy. Either way, it’s great.

Rushing forward, you appear very quickly in front of the two of them, Oreo hanging off your neck and swinging as your momentum comes to a stop. You missed being able to run. “Hey Sawako, Katsu, I didn’t know you knew each other.” For some reason this causes Katsu to put up a hood on his jacket and he shrinks a little. Weird.

“Oh yeah! We were friends back in school but he was always too busy to hang out. He has a lot more time now though, too bad I’m going on a mission for a while.” Sawako smiles, her outfit covered in little bells and some scrolls in her pockets. If you had to guess she got the scrolls from Takuya. Katsu is in a more cloak-like jacket with his clan’s symbol on it and his hair is cut shorter. Still messy though.

“We are too, so you won’t be missing me.” Katsu seems more glum than usual as you hum.

“Which team are you meeting?” With any luck, you’re on the same mission.

“I don’t know, but Riko-sensei would only say it as ‘That a-word’s team’.” Sawako looks to be thinking. “Which doesn’t narrow it down that much knowing her.”

Katsu looks at you the same moment you look at him. “I think you might be going on the same mission as us.” Sawako looks forwards and claps, looking over the moon as she hops in place.

“That’ll be great! Wait that means your sensei is an a-word? Is he mean? Should I be careful around him?” Katsu shakes his head at her.

“Nope, just don’t believe him all the time, he’s a pathological liar.” Sawako tilts her head. “He does it so much it’s like a habit.” She nods.

“So do you want to walk to the field together? I can introduce you to my team! They’re so nice, especially Daisuke. He’s been really good at making sure I can keep up.” You get the feeling you don’t have a choice, so you start to reply begrudgingly.

“Of course!” Katsu cuts you off with a much too happy sounding expression. Maybe he just needs to be around someone who is WAY too happy to bring out his energy. That makes sense.

For the most part on the walk, you’re crowded out of conversations, it’s not Katsu or Sawako’s faults they just obviously have different interests than you. For some reason they kept discussing some poll for a comic about a little sister character and the whole thing was going over your head. You’re proud to say that despite being an outcast, you aren’t enough of a nerd to care about comics that much, but hey, they eventually agreed about something in the discussion. If only you knew what it was. Never took Sawako for the type to read comics but she’s definitely the type to get obsessive about things.

“Okay, but that flashback was pretty scary right?” “I didn’t actually get the chance to read that one, I’ve been skipping some.” “...you probably shouldn’t read that one.” You occupy yourself with Oreo. It’s nothing new to be left out of conversations and you’re sure you wouldn’t be able to contribute much anyway. Eventually you reach the training field and see something completely bizarre.

Hideaki and two other people you’d have to assume are your teammates are sparring. One of them, a pretty average looking guy with black hair and a dark brown jacket with a black symbol on the back, is throwing gobs of what looks like honey at Hideaki. Another, a tall boy with spiked brown hair, is rushing him with a sword. For his part, Hideaki looks much better from before, more stern probably from the lack of poison. As the brunette rushes him, Hideaki whirls towards the swordsman and slams a fist into his chest. Weird, you’ve only ever seen him do open palms.

The swordsman goes flying across the training field into a tree and Hideaki cups his mouth in shock as the other one stops throwing honey. “Oh my god I’m so sorry! It was an accident!” Even weirder, you believe him. He must be trying out new styles finally, and forgot that he wasn’t being drained of strength anymore. Standing up, the swordsman looks absolutely boiled, even though the other boy looks like he believes Hideaki.

“Daisuke, that did look like an accident.” The sap? Looks like it’s hardening into amber. Must be some kind of special jutsu. He’s cleaning it up as it dries, putting it in his pockets. Daisuke, you’d have to guess, leans on his sword and yells at him.

“You think I believe for an instant this asshole isn’t trying to prove a point!? And of course you’d side with him Osamu!” His sword looks like it’s really old, must have been passed down or something. Katsu steps forward.

“I would, he’s too straightforward to make points like that.” Katsu is back to his serious, professional self.

“Like you don’t have a reason to believe that! Wonder if the special eyes are in league? Hmm, I dunno.” The sarcasm is annoying and grating, not humorous. Sawako doesn’t seem to know what to do.

“You paranoid or something? Hideaki’s trying out new styles and forgot he wasn’t given his daily dose of near coma-inducing poison this morning. Now what’s your excuse for being all upset about it?”

“He’s thinking I’m less than him! Just look at his blank face!” Hideaki has the same dumb look of confusion as always.

“Yeah, I thought that when I first met him too, but that’s his neutral expression. Pretty sure you’re just looking for reasons to be upset that you got beaten up instead of owning up to it. He said he’s sorry, let it go.” If you didn’t know any better you’d say this guy is trying to be upset at Hideaki and Katsu, but he’s not trying, it’s the same way you started out.

“Let it go!?” He’s getting closer to you, so you flex your muscles a bit by making Oreo rev his saws. It seems to work much better than it ever did before, causing him to back up.

“Yes. If you’re going to hate the clans, hate them, not the people in them.” You parrot back the words you heard a while ago. Daisuke looks confused before backing down. Osamu walks over and puts out a gloved hand.

It’s covered in amber, so he takes it off and puts the hand out again. You shake it. “I’m Osamu Kohaku.” That name kind of rings a bell.

“Yoko Yamisaki.” As you talk, Sawako walks over to Daisuke and starts talking with him off to the side. You manage to overhear what nobody else seems to be able to.

“What was that!?” “He punched me into a tree.” “Not that, why were you acting that way?” “That guy’s bad news, the way he looked at me made it seem like he was looking at trash.” “Well stop acting that way, he’s Katsu and Yoko’s friend so be nice to him!” “Speaking of, what’s up with that?” “That’s not the point, be nicer or I’ll-” “You’ll what? Spit water at me?” “Just do it.” The conversation ends shortly after that.

You’ve never heard Sawako talk that way, she’s normally way more peppy and cheerful, but that was completely different and Daisuke comes back more than a little rattled.

You walk over to Sawako and look at her, she seems a bit red in the face. Weird. “What was that about?” You’re trying to keep this discreet and not make a huge deal of it.

“What was what about?” She really looks like she doesn’t know what you’re talking about. You are coming down from a month-long period of constantly being poisoned, so maybe you imagined it? Or maybe that’s just how she sounds when she’s being forceful, you wouldn’t know.

“You sounded all scary there, just seemed kind of weird for you.” Giving up on this sort of thing isn’t really your style.

“Huh, I’ll keep that in mind. Thanks for lookin-wait, you could hear that!?” She’s blushing very hard now. “Don’t tell Katsurou, please!” Sawako looks mortified. Okay, now you can connect the dots, she was obviously just really frazzled with being called out on a crush and ended up sounding more serious than she intended. Why Katsu of all people though? He’s a weedy brooding loner who needs help keeping himself decently well-groomed. That’s not at all like Sawako.

“I won’t, geez, just don’t let it mess with the mission.” She smiles and nods, going in for a hug that you’re not paying enough attention to stop. You only really come up to her shoulder so you end up feeling pretty awkward. Sawako lets go before you get the chance to make Oreo hiss and you can hear the sound of leaves rustling in the distance. And the telltale jingle of a cloak. Walking back and whistling to everyone, they all turn to you from what they were doing. That feels great! They’re all listening to you so you point into the woods.

A few moments later, Jun-sensei and a woman who looks slightly similar to him in terms of gear walk out of the forest. She has long black hair and green eyes, and she looks surprisingly smug for just coming out of shrubbery. “Hello Team 6, I take it you’ve met your accomplices for the month. For those who aren’t familiar, I am Riko Nakano, the Unseen Knife of the Leaf, and trainer for Team 6.” Okay, she’s trying way too hard to be posh and high-class for it to be true. You, Hideaki, and Katsu wave nonchalantly, much to her apparent frustration.

“Hey, I’m Jun. These ones are mine. Team 9. I specialize in kicking ass and making people who don’t kick ass kick ass.” Jun looks like he doesn’t even seem to be taking this seriously. Is this a front? He was dead serious this morning. Team 6 looks confused.
>>
“Do you have a last name?” Osamu asks politely.

“No. My name is Jun and you’ll call me that, anything else is a waste of time.” Wait, was he trying to imitate Riko when he was acting all high and mighty when you met him?

“We ought to go over who our teams are, wouldn’t you say Venom?” She nudges him in a friendly way.

Jun points at Hideaki. “Punches and eyes.” He moves to Katsu. “Speedy illusion kid.” He points at you. “Puppets and biology.” You’re a bit disappointed to be pared down to that simple of a description. “Hideaki, Katsurou, Yoko. That’s all you need” A while ago you wondered if Jun wanted to be training you, now you know that isn’t true.

This is what he acts like when he doesn’t want to be here. Riko pouts a little and you get the impression she wants him to play along. They act like a couple, are they a couple? Riko walks over to her team.

“This is Daisuke, Kenjutsu specialist with experience in Lightning techniques.” She moves behind Osamu. “Osamu Kohaku is from a clan that lives on the border, who were kind enough to send him over to learn. He’s a prodigy at his Clan Techniques, so he is currently learning in Konoha.” Riko moves behind Sawako and immediately looks at Katsu, who doesn’t seem to notice. You do. You’re not sure if you like this woman, too manipulative. “And this is Sawako, our team’s generalist. She knows a little bit of everything.” It’s a lot easier to see someone struggle for a compliment when you did it before.

You roll your eyes, momentarily considering calling her out, but decide against it. Obviously there are ulterior motives for this mission, you just wonder what she’s giving Jun-sensei to make him cooperate, whatever it is doesn’t seem to be enough because every few seconds his cloak jingles as he kicks a pebble or something. “So what’s the mission?” This is getting way too unprofessional for your tastes.

“That’s adorable, she looks all serious like you Venom.” “Escorting some monk through the Grass, Rain, and to the Stone. We are not expected to encounter any resistance as this is a religious expedition-” “A pilgrimage.” “-Whatever, but there may be bandits.” Jun-sensei and Riko intermittently cut each other off. You aren’t adorable, you are serious, she’s seriously starting to annoy you but you think that may be the point so you don’t let it show.

“Sensei, when will we meet this monk?” Osamu speaks very shortly, and Riko responds with a speed to her words that gives you the sense she might be trying to confuse him. “On the border after an arduous trek towards Kusagakure.” The boy looks properly behind as he mouths out the words.

Jun walks over to the group and inspects you all, walking in a relaxed motion that reminds you of a ghost swaying through trees with bells jingling at each turn. “Starting to wear off, still have a bit, probably on…” He stops mumbling when he gets to you, then pulls away. “As we go, you will be starting your actual training. You’re ready and I’ve been getting bored.”

“Oh Venom, always saying things you don’t mean… you’re obviously jealous of Team 6’s success.” Riko laughs and Jun whirls at her then steps forwards. “Don’t-” Something happens far too fast for you to see, but Hideaki turns beet red as Jun stops what he was saying. “I’m just joking Venom! Not fair to judge, I know you do a lot of prep work.” This woman is weird, you aren’t sure you like her and she seems to be hellbent on making people uncomfortable.

Sawako is hiding her face, probably embarrassed as Daisuke has turned the same shade as Hideaki. Maybe your vision hasn’t improved, but you’re at least able to hear when other people whisper. Jun walks back and takes a seat on a stump. “Any questions?”

Hideaki raises his hand but Jun presumably answers his question before he can ask. “No.” Daisuke raises his hand and Riko does the same. “Yes.” Jun shoots her a glare and Katsurou raises his hand.

“What is the procedure should we encounter shinobi from the Rain?” That’s… a scary proposition. You already met one of the three survivors of their leader, and he’s probably the strongest shinobi you’ve ever talked to. There are horror stories about their shinobi.

“Focus on escape while Riko and I fight.”

Oh boy.
>>
“What will training include?” He’s been prepping you for a month now, it has to be something super intensive and requiring poison resistances as well as the better focus you’ve developed from being impeded so long. You’re ready to get started, to take a step towards being a great ninja!

“Eh, I think I’ll do the tree walking and water walking stuff then work from there. That’s the old standard, why break it?” ...why were you expecting something cool? “Maybe one or two of my special techniques when this mission is done. Those would be fun.” From the way he’s saying that you are very sure that it will not be the fun you enjoy. Still, all you’ve seen him do so far have been Earth jutsu and some Genjutsu, maybe he’s been holding back on some intense stuff.

Riko looks shocked rather than smug for the first time since you’ve seen her. “Uh… you sure about that Se-Venom?” She sounded like she was going to say something else but corrected herself. It’s interesting, she obviously has the same taste with the cloak as Jun, and her hair is pretty close to being styled the same if it weren’t so well-kept. Maybe they learned from the same person or something and use their style as a tribute.

“Yeah, what doesn’t kill ‘em makes ‘em stronger. What are YOU training your students in?” Jun looks at her with a pointed expression and she suddenly becomes a bit angry, the mask already broken.

“I was going to train Chakra control!” Sawako raises her hands and claps, but Jun laughs.

“Okay, then I guess that’s your way of saying we’ll have them train together?” “Yeah! They’ll kick your team’s butts!” “Not worried that you’re copying my regimen?” “It’s not copying if you do it better!” “Are you sure you don’t mind your students seeing you annoyed?” This makes Riko turn red and turn back towards her team, Daisuke obviously barely holding back a laugh.

“Well, okay then, we’ll be off, follow me.” Jun faces towards the forest, a grin on his face. Okay, you have to admit, seeing the other Jonin frazzled was fun after watching her strut around for a bit.

Intelligence pulls through again.
>>
Thinking back to what you learned about Amegakure and Kusagakure in the Academy, you can recall the bits about their climate and natural resources that you studied in the library when you were still trying to find the equalizer you did in Oreo. Kusagakure has lots of rocky ravines and rivers, which encourage bamboo forests, the grass fields it’s known for, and some that are mostly fungal growth. That last one might be promising if you recall the properties of some fungal spores, there may be some that are psychoactive or even deadly. Even the grass may be useful if you can find some intersection between the fungi and the fields, it’s all very interesting biologically. The wildlife is pretty mundane, but the snakes in Kusagakure are particularly venomous you hear, and a rare species of poison frog with a yellow skull marking on the back of it dwells in the fungal forests. That would maybe even be worth a search, the mucus it secretes can be used as a catalyst to make poisons skin-penetrating and it uses that in nature by rubbing itself against poisonous mushrooms.

Amegakure is the land that birthed Hanzo of the Salamander, so even if the concept of encountering such a monster is terrifying, you know that it’s the holy grail of poison. The wildlife is almost entirely hostile, with large intimidating forms or deadly and unique poisons. It’s very dense with rivers and such, rains most of the time, and is notorious for sucking mud that can pull a man down and drown him in less than a minute. Marshes are an exciting concept, the insects are a good source of agents to increase bleeding beyond even what you can do already, lizards and frogs have withering extracts that could cause permanent damage to organs, there’s even supposedly a breed of rat that gorges on poisonous roots to the point that its very blood is a powerful cocktail that numbs a person to any pain and allows them to perform great feats beyond what a human body could handle. Even though lingering in that country would be a bad idea, even a quick jaunt through a swamp could see so many advancements that your head is spinning.

The run is definitely wearing on you, but as it does you feel your legs loosen as your breathing quickens, not like you normally are when tired. Soon you’re almost catching up with Katsurou, finding new reserves of speed you weren’t aware of and once again finding your body moving before you have conscious thought to do so. Just like when you were poisoned. Maybe the preparation did help because now your vision seems to be behind your body, even though you know there’s no lag anymore, and you were certain you’d trip a few times. But no, you manage to get by on the other senses you’ve honed and what you can only chalk up to instincts.

>Poison has fully worn off, Speed has been increased to 3.5, Awareness has been improved, Prediction Dodge options are now available (Average of Speed and Intelligence)

As the sun starts to set, your legs are screaming at you for almost an hour before Jun stops in front of an inn. The other team arrives at roughly the same time, then Hideaki shows up late as ever. You walk up to Jun as dignified as you can on your shaky legs. “Ration and water.” He cocks an eyebrow and smiles.

“I see how it is, if it’s my treat you’ll pick me clean but if you’re paying suddenly it’s water and no dessert.” It’s a joke, maybe even a bit true, but you’re not at all in a mood to laugh as he hands you a brown bag with what feels like a few dry biscuits and some small pieces of jerky in it. You fill a canteen full of water inside while Jun and Riko pay for the rooms. Sawako sits down next to you on the bench and pulls a small wooden box from her pack, opens it, and starts eating what looks like some white rice and vegetables. Your own meal is definitely going to be filling, but the salted meat and pasty biscuits force you to chug water with it.

“Where’d you get that?”

“I figured we’d be on our own for dinner so I bought a bento before we left.” Wait, that’s actually pretty smart, you could have done that with lunch. You mentally berate yourself for not doing it. “It’s not a lot, I don’t think I could share, but I could trade you a bit for some of your jerky.”

“You don’t want it Sawako, it’s not good.” You smile a bit at the offer though. It was nice, you know she didn’t actually want the jerky so she just wanted to make you feel a bit better by giving you some other food. Charity isn’t your thing though. Luckily you’re right next to the water, your canteen needs to be filled a few times in order for you to choke down your food.

“Yoko, are you okay?” Looking over a bit confused as you chug, she elaborates. “You just seem a bit off is all, did I do something?”

Thinking it over, you look down at the water. “No, I just have a lot to prove and I don’t want to let who I am hold me back. Not like you haven’t changed, you were all sunshine and rainbows for the past few years and now you’re making threats against your teammates when they get in fights with mine. It’s not terrible, it’s just not like you.”

“Let’s be honest here, you never paid much attention to me to know me, did you? I don’t hold that against you, you didn’t chase me off with a broom so it’s better than most people. The past few weeks have been better, and I think you’re probably my best friend, but I’ve always been this way, sorry if you thought otherwise.”

“It’s okay, you’re right, I haven’t really spent time getting to know you. Why don’t we change that, we’re going to be in the same room anyway.” You actually feel kind of bad about not talking to her, granted up until a small while ago you found her pretty annoying in her optimism and she made you look bad. But that was in the academy, moving past it is… wait a minute. This is a sleepover, you’ve never had a sleepover, what do you do on sleepovers, is it just talking on end for an evening? “Sawako, was this just an excuse to get me to think about this as a sleepover?”

“Is it working?” She smiles and you can’t help but feel a little less nervous. Sawako’s good for that you guess. “That’s what I like about you Yoko! We’re on the same page.” Okay, she shouldn’t push her luck, just because she could call it that once doesn’t mean it will work again. You’re just… not used to this, that’s all, yeah.

Jun barely looks over at you two before tossing a key at Sawako’s face, you grab it out of the air and check the number. “So… where do you live?” Good first question, you just thought about it from the room key. You never really thought to ask her about herself.

“Oh, I live next to that general store you walked by.” That’s not a residential area, you walk by it every day, the only thing that she could live in there would be a family business but that bento isn’t homemade so the only other option is…

“The orphanage?” She nods, the smile still there. “Huh. I don’t live far from there.”

“My turn! What’s your birthday?” You weren’t aware there were turns.

“June 19th.”

“Oh, wow, happy belated birthday. You’re actually older than me.” You guess that means it’s your turn.

“Hmm. What’s Takuya’s seal about?” It’s a pretty harmless question as she finishes her meal and you both stand up to head to the room.

“I promised I wouldn’t tell you and he just said it would put that “Firefly a-word in his place”. He really doesn’t like that guy in his team.” You wave her off.

“Nah, he just needs to have someone to compete with or he doesn’t have a reason to get up in the morning.” Something that’s anti-fire, probably some firehose seal or something.

“What’s your favorite food?”

“Strawberry mochi.” Your turn. Stalling for a bit, you open the door and toss your pack by the door, then flop down on the pretty flat mattress.

She's going to tell us everything about Katsu, even the creepy stuff like his shoe size and what his sheets smell like.
>>
Thinking, you realize if this is a sleepover, you should get into your pajamas. Quickly changing in the small closet to the side of the room, you come out in some pajama pants and a purple shirt. Sawako must have got the idea as well and you keep Oreo around your neck while you relax on your bed. The sheets are uncomfortable so you just lay on top of them and play with the puppet a bit. You kind of are curious about one thing, never really were sure if it’s a crush or anything different, but the fact that she got so defensive about Katsu… “So are you and Katsurou… you know, dating or something? He’s been a lot happier lately. Less huddling and naps, more laughing and smiling. And I couldn’t get a word in edgewise on the way to the field.”

Sawako turns bright red as she holds a thin pillow close to her chest, she looks like she’s having trouble processing as she pulls a small thing out of her pack. It looks like a small wooden frog. “He got me this a while ago, so I gave him that scarf I bought from the store to learn knitting. H-he’s really happy?” You nod and she squeals a little bit as she rubs the back of the wooden figure. You think it might be the kind that you run a stick down its back to make it croak.

“You still haven’t said anything to answer the question.” You point it out and she stops for a moment.

“I’d really really like if we were dating, but I don’t know if he likes me as a friend or if he wants to date or if he wants to just focus on his training…” She hugs the pillow tighter as your mind turns over gears. Katsu got her that toad?

“What day did he get you that?”

“Uh, it was a few weeks ago, Sunday?” Okay, yeah, the same day that you tested the poison and he asked you what girls like.

“Yeah, he likes you, I’ll tell him to ask you out.” Sawako practically jumps off the bed.

“Really!? You’d do that!”

“Eh, you’ll be good for him, he’s kind of a downer so it should balance out. You really gave him that ugly pink scarf?”

“Yeah! Why, did he wear it?”

“No. He only wears black white and red.”

“Okayokayokay, my turn, do you have a crush on anyone?”

>”Nope.”
>”No but if you see a tall, handsome, smart boy who’s nice and likes snakes, point them my way.”

Yoko has a one-track mind.
>>
”No but if you see a tall, handsome, smart boy who’s nice and likes snakes, point them my way.” You rub Oreo on the head and roll over so you’re looking at Sawako upside down. Never really been too much into boys, never been much into you either. There’s always been a really clear image in your head of what you’d want though, you’re still a girl after all. Mostly you’d like having someone who can work with you on projects, help you by getting the stuff up high, and wouldn’t think you’re weird for liking snakes and creepy crawlies.

“O-oh, that’s really specific. Are you sure you aren’t thinking about someone?” Sawako mimics your position, the frog back in her pack.

“Nobody in our class fits that, and even if they did they wouldn’t go out with the puppet girl.”

“It sounds like someone who isn’t in our class.”

“N-no.” You bring Oreo a bit closer.

“It’s okay Yoko, it’s just a crush. Nothing serious, not like you’ve ever talked t-oh my god I’m going to stop. Nobody should be that red.” She stops as you shake your head and snuggle Oreo. Stupid Sawako, that’s not a thing that can happen. You just know what you want, that’s all.

After a bit cooling off, you let out a sigh. “What’s your favorite color?”

“Teal. Yours?”

“Purple. Best childhood memory?”

“One time I opened up a bag of jellybeans and got all pink.”

“No way.”

“Yes way. Yours?”

“Making Oreo. What’s your favorite food?”

“Pork dumplings, you?”

“You already asked me that Sawako, it’s strawberry mochi, try again.”

“Do you think Riko-sensei and Jun are dating?”

“I don’t think Jun-sensei would date her.”

“True enough, but she was really intent on getting our team with your team.”

“I think they may just be friends.”

If we end up rolling for this and do poorly, we're borderline asking why she doesn't become a prostitute at worst, a social climbing stay-at-home wife at best.
I'm okay either way.

”Why do you want to be a ninja, you’re pretty and happy, and this job is about hurting people.” You know why you do it, but she could easily just be a normal girl.

Sawako looks down, then up again. “It may sound a bit weird, but I want to do this, my parents did it when they came here and I want to be like they were. We used to live in a little house in the woods outside of town on whatever they got for missions, when I first entered the academy they were still around.”

“What happened?” You really don’t want to pry but she looks like she needs to get it off her chest.

“I came home and the house was on fire, Mom was inside and for some reason she couldn’t get out. She wanted me to help, to get help, and I tried but…” She grabs the little frog out of her pack and starts rubbing it again. “When I got back it was too late. Police called it arson by a foreign spy.”

“That’s horrible, Sawako. Nobody should go through that.” She gets under her sheets and rolls over to look at you.

“I haven’t told anyone that before. We should probably stop and go to bed.” You stay over the covers petting and rubbing Oreo in the dim light. Like you could sleep after hearing that. If your mom died… you don’t know what you’d do. How is she so upbeat despite all that?

“Sawako, I think I’ll stay up a little bit longer, you go ahead and get some sleep.” She nods and closes her eyes, the little figurine by her bed.

Looking at the moon, you think about home.

Wonder what Dad and Mom are doing… you’ve never been away from home this long before, Mom’s probably going crazy thinking about you being out here, it only would have been worse if you’d got the chance to tell them where you’re going. This isn’t a safe place you’re going to, you could easily be taken out by the fearsome Rain shinobi while trying to cross their border, the wildlife could hurt you, there are any number of bad things that would cause your mom worry. But you can handle them, you have to because you can and that’s the end of it. You pull the sheets over you and leave Oreo over them, snuggling the wooden snake and feeling the cool sheets on your chest and legs. It’s relaxing, and you fall asleep.

You’re in some boiling, sweltering room, someone above you shouting down unintelligible orders as you work on a line of some machine you’re sure isn’t real. Covered in metal cables that burn as you grip them, the tools slipping out of your hand as familiar faces come down the line, being screwed onto machines by other workers that lack faces. Everything bleeds together as masks of your father’s face, your mother’s face, and other animals are screwed onto machines. One of the workers takes a face and puts it on, one that’s almost sheet white with purple fangs and immediately disappears, so you pull one too. It looks like a red flame to match the heat. When you put it on, you feel sudden, burning pain, but you can’t scream. Then nothing.

The rest of the dream is a blur, but it’s no longer scary, just melancholy. When you wake up, you find yourself tangled in sheets with Oreo wrapped around you and half out of the covers. Sawako is already up and a crick in your back makes itself known. For some reason, you feel lonely, but maybe it’s just the lack of your plush. No, you’re 13, you’re a big girl now. “Did you know you mumble in your sleep?” Sawako is in the middle of putting on her light green and brown gear as she speaks. A flush comes over your cheeks as you start doing the same.

“Do not!” You didn’t mean to speak that loud, so you quiet down. “Do not.”

“It’s cute though…” Sawako pouts a little at your outburst. “Are you really going to talk to Katsu for me?”

“After the mission, we’re here to do a job.” The clothes go on quickly and your jacket zips up halfway over your garb.

Ayy, delicious goody after nightmares.
>>
Deciding to grab enough ryo to buy some real food from your pocket, you turn around to face Sawako. Her face looks like she’s about to cry even though she’s smiling and she gets you in a hug before you can stop her. “Thankyouthankyouthankyou Yoko! You’re the best.” Rolling back your shoulders to get room to slip out, you duck under her arms with the slack and get out. “Whoa, that was spooky, how did-”

You cut her off. “-Oreo had some malfunctions back when I first made his grip modifications so I had to be able to slip out.” Thinking back to the time you broke your ribs on accident and Mom freaked out, you smile. It was just a small thing, you were fine, even though you were in a lot of pain at the time it was your fault. Stopped being a problem when you figured out how to better tweak the locks, but the experience is there.

“...couldn’t you have just not wrapped him around yourself?”

“No! He belongs on my shoulders…. like a good snake…” You push your mask up and wrap the wooden puppet a bit tighter.

“Ooookay. I’m going to see if I can get some rations for a light breakfast.” Oh no, there’s nothing light about the rations.

“Good luck with that.” Serves her right for thinking she knows how you should wear Oreo… “Save the biscuits for on the road they’re heavy.” Okay you can’t be that mean.

Sawako gives you a thumbs up and splits off from you to talk to the Jonin in their room. Placing the ryo on the counter, you take a small donut with strawberry frosting on it and walk towards the area in the lobby that’s crowded with chairs. There aren’t many people around at this time, but you can see the rest of the teams in their various places. Katsu is sitting and looking out the window at some birds, not eating anything and with a single cup of water on the table, alone. Hideaki and Osamu are talking about something to do with sculptures and drawings or something? You can hear them, but Osamu obviously doesn’t know many words and neither does Hideaki to describe the processes so it’s an odd cycle of one saying something, the other getting confused, then the speaker paring down their words. Daisuke is on his own sharpening his sword and drinking some tea. It looks cold.

Sitting at the table next to Daisuke, you pull down your mask to start eating the donut. “You know, Hideaki punched me too. And Sawako. And everyone really. I think you might have been further down the line, I don’t remember anything past the H’s.” You let out a sigh. “He didn’t even remember me on the first day.”

“Well that’s a load, you should always show respect, just goes to show what being raised like he was will do.” Oh. This makes more sense. At least he remembers you. “I don’t remember beating up a Yamanaka though.” Okay. Maybe you should dye your hair. You clench your fist and slam it on the table. The thump isn’t very loud or intimidating.

“My last name is Yamisaki.” You growl out the words. Stay calm Yoko. You’re the professional. He’s the one who’s not. Be calm.

Daisuke puts away the sword. “Oh. Sorry. I just assumed when Sawako brought up poisons that…” He actually does look sorry for his part. “I think I kind of remember you? That was a while ago.” Calm down. Calm down. He’s just a stupid boy.

“Yes, it was, so let me give you some advice. Hideaki isn’t disrespecting you, he just has his foot lodged firmly in his mouth and is the single clumsiest person I know.” The way Daisuke looks at you and takes a drink of his tea makes you feel like he’s at least listening, paying attention, consideri-

“Okay. You haven’t actually said I’m wrong about the way he was raised.”

You consider it. “You’re not. But there’s a difference between hating a system and hating a person.”

“You said that yesterday in different words.”

“It’s true, and right now being a butt to him isn’t helping anyone.”

“Okay. I’ll try.” He seems almost dismissive, but he does look like he was paying close attention.

Taking a bite of the donut, you swallow the fluffy pastry that tastes amazing and quickly keep yourself from looking too happy. “So… what do you do?” Better to understand the rest of the team right now if you want to know how to do strategy. Another bite of the donut and the strawberry frosting is enough to have you chewing bigger bites than you actually would have preferred. It’s just so good! Trying to keep your serious demeanor, Daisuke smiles. No! You’re a professional! Not cute!

“Well, I’m focused on kenjutsu mostly as it pertains to parrying, and I can send sparks through the blade. I was a bit oversold by my sensei.” He pulls out the sword again and sets it on the table. “This belonged to my father.” It has a curved, thick blade and looks more like it was made to slash and hack rather than stab.

You mull it over. If he locked swords with someone, sparks could easily take them by surprise, for a moment you consider it against the swordsman of the Mist and find it not a terrible plan of attack before remembering that they would kill Daisuke before he even had a chance to lock blades. Still, not terrible. “It’s pretty good actually, I’m not good in close combat and Hideaki can only do so much with brute force.” He gives you a confused look. “What?”

“He’s a Hyuga though, isn’t parrying and striking back his whole thing?”

“Yeah, normally, but he’s not good at that so he’s trying things out.”

“Huh. What do you do?”

You mull it over for a little bit, looking at his sword and finding it to be a good distraction. No engravings but lots of notches. “I specialize in poisons and puppetry, mostly keep away from the action myself. That’s the puppet’s job. Oh, and get rid of booboos, that’s important.” You say the word in a very condescending tone and he chuckles a little. You take the lull in conversation to finish your breakfast, disappointed that it’s gone.

Jun-sensei and Riko come back in their normal outfits and Sawako follows behind a bit dazed and confused before sitting by Katsu. “Alright, listen up, buy anything you need here because this is your last chance. Get it done in ten.” Riko looks like she’s going to say something before another thing happens and she loses the words. Maybe they use Genjutsu on each other to get them to shut up. That makes sense.

Jumping to your feet, you walk over to an old couple going over their plans for what seems to be a vacation of some sort. “Excuse me, but could I buy that map off you?” The woman looks down, kind of reminding you of Grandma, and smiles with a grin missing some teeth. If she tries to pinch your cheek you’re hitting her hand away. You make the mental promise and wrap Oreo over your mouth.

“Oh look honey, isn’t she adorable! Here, we have our plans together anyway sweetie. You can have it.” You pout, your face turning a bit red at their compliment and they hand you the map. Sending two strings, you have Oreo take it in his mouth and nestle it into your jacket. You’re not cute you’re a competent kunoichi who’s efficiently sized.

Getting over your embarrassment you put the paper in a box inside your pack so it doesn’t get wet, then return to a comfy armchair to wait for departure. Osamu sits down at one near you and seems to be trying to get his words correct, you think he may have some sort of speech impediment or language barrier. “Did you have nice rest?” Okay, it’s not unbearable, he’s fine.

“Yeah.” You’re just still a little peeved about being called adorable.

“It was nice ruse on elders.” Is he complimenting you on what you did with the old people? Huh. “Free… chart.” Eh. Close enough.

“Thanks. You’re a prodigy, eh?”

“Very much.” Okay now he’s trying to brag.

“Humble too?”

“No. Worked hard.”

Man I like this quest and I don't wanna be rude but we've had a shitload of updates in a row that were just dialogue, you gotta pace the action better. Or at least have more meaningful votes.

Better to know than not you guess. “So what exactly can you do?”

“I make sap into amber, can’t tell lots.” Clans are so annoying, you can understand it but not having all the information is horrible. Now you’re going to spend the rest of the time trying to figure out how it works. “What exactly can you do?”

“Puppets, poison, medicine, that’s what I specialize at.” He’s not being very long-winded so you won’t either, it’s nice that way. Osamu isn’t too bad.

“Alright! Everyo-” “We’re leaving.” Jun cuts off Riko as soon as she gets ready to launch into a peppy yell, it’s good, nobody would have been able to match that enthusiasm. “Oh, right, mix marching order. Hideaki goes at the front, Katsurou goes in the back.” He takes a swig of coffee from a thermos and closes it, then walks out the door with Riko in tow whispering to him. “I know we agreed you’d be in charge in exchange b-” “Zip it.” “Okay but you’re goi-” “Seriously, shut up.” It seems like Jun-sensei has caught on to you.

The next few hours are more grueling running, even though you aren’t as tired anymore it’s still very boring, and you have to wait so that Hideaki can go at his slower pace. At least he doesn’t look tired at all, maybe the poison did some good you guess. You check on Katsurou and he looks more present if you had to describe it, almost no spacing out at all, more focused. It’s interesting.

Suddenly, Riko stops and everyone follows suit. “We’re here, students, the carriage should be right here!” Looking around, down, in the brush, you all see nothing. Jun sighs. “You’re really terrible at reading comprehension aren’t you.” Pulling a small foldable shovel out of his cloak, he points down. “We’re transferring the monk’s corpse. He’s in an unmarked grave under an old tree. That’s why we have Hideaki.” “Okay but the wording on that missi-” “Shhh, you can say it, say ‘I’m sorry for doubting you that we had time Jun’ and I’ll forgive you.” “Like hell!” The two continue squabbling and over their chatter you can hear something.

“You heard the sage was buried here? Of all places?” “Yeah, and with all his bounty too.” “Ugh, don’t say bounty Juri, bad vibes.” “Oh, sorry.” Graverobbers! You put up your hand and everyone stops talking.

Pointing at Hideaki, then in the direction of the voices, the veins around his eyes bulge as he looks towards the disturbance, then puts up four fingers. Jun and Riko continue glaring at each other and Hideaki whispers to the group. “Four of them, one woman, three men. All of them have shovels and it looks like they may be ninja, no headbands but they all have the usual gear.” The veins go down and he blinks his eyes. Now that he isn’t talking you can hear some more conversation.

“You sure about this Hach?” That voice is low, obviously a large man’s voice if you had to guess.

“Juri’s the one taking point on this.” Hach says, he was the first one you heard. Sounds kind of cocky and dismissive, like he’s letting this happen not aiding it or responsible for it. “She’s the one who took the mission.”

The female voice lets out a sigh. “Why do you have to be so cruel, Hachiro? You know they pay well.” She reminds you a bit of Riko actually, flair for the dramatic tone and all. “If it weren’t here, they wouldn’t send us, no?”

“It’s below us alright, can feel it.” This one is almost like a person with a bad cold, each word crackling in a dry throat. Disgusting.

Jun and Riko look at each other and nod, then take a seat on a tree branch. Riko whispers. “Team 6, Team 9, go do your mission and be sure to secure that monk.”

Sawako is the first to respond. “Wait but we weren’t supposed to encounter shinobi, this is outside the mission.”

Jun shoots back immediately. “Make it work, we’ll be watching if it gets too intense.”

“This does not seem safe.” Katsu mutters.

“If it were you wouldn’t be learning~” Riko lilts back in a singsong tune.

The teams both bunch up and start preparing, Daisuke drawing his sword, Hideaki activating his eyes again and pointing at where they are, Katsu is shaking out his hands and letting them crack with muffled pops. Osamu and Sawako seem to be the only other ones not prepping somehow. You already have Oreo loaded, some senbon in vials, you’re well-rested...why does everyone else have to make it theatrical? Eventually, all eyes settle on you.

“Why’re you looking at me?”

Daisuke responds. “You’re the one who heard them.” The rest nod along. Great. Why are you always given the burden of planning?

You hold up a hand again. They might give more away if you listen more. The voice you can immediately hear is the female. “Come on Kenta, where’s da bone?” She’s talking like you would to a puppy or other cute animal, and you can’t help but feel like she’s trying her hardest to be demeaning.

“Fuck off, takes concentration to read the terrain, tell Nobu to stop plodding around.” The voice that sounds raspy must be Kenta, and by process of elimination the big guy has to be Nobu. It sounds like Kenta is some kind of sensor, one for finding the body obviously, and Nobu isn’t exactly light on your feet.

The group is quiet so you put down your hand. “One seems to be a sensor, the big one is clumsy.” Hideaki raises a hand, then puts it down after a moment of dumbfounded looks.

“I should fight the big one.” Seeing that everyone else is looking at him weird, he elaborates. “The tenketsu are more spread out and easier to hit.” Nodding, the group looks around as other people offer suggestions.

Osamu taps his head as he thinks then sighs. “I will fight Sensor.”

Sawako looks at him and suppresses a clap of excitement. “I can help. I learned some Genjutsu that’s useful against them before we left.” Huh, guess being a jack of all trades has some uses, using Katsu for support would have been a waste.

Speaking of, he looks forwards. “I think keeping flexible may be best for me.”

Daisuke nods. “I can jump in as needed.”

”I’ll try to take at least one out by surprise.” You interject. A good hit from a Chakra Restriction Poison would be enough.

>”Hideaki, Osamu, Sawako, and Daisuke should go in while Katsu and I sneak up.”

Confirming the plan, the group all starts jumping towards the graverobbers, Katsu and Daisuke sticking nearest to you and the other three spread out as they go. You strain your ears to hear as you go. Kenta seems to be stepping around, you can hear small footsteps on grass when you get closer. Then you hear him. “Shit! Trees! Not sure how many but people are coming, at least three.” Oh no, he sensed you! Still, he doesn’t have your numbers down. You can save this.

You signal Daisuke to split off from you and Katsu and he does so. That should confuse the numbers more if he’s inaccurate as you get the feeling he has to be. Hachiro is the one who speaks next. “Oh I wonder if they’re from the Leaf? Great plan Juri. Just three… we can take ‘em easy. Lucky they didn’t send anything more substantial, three Genin is easy but a Jonin would be a disaster.” They’re underestimating you, good. At least now you know that Jun and Riko could step in if needed.

“Ah ah ah~ Ken said at least three, there may be more. Be ready for a challenge or I’ll be sad to bury you as a replacement.” Juri’s the one who points it out, and your heart sinks. You were hoping for them to not realize that.

The team except Katsu and you seem to be their focus, so you start looping around behind the direction the enemies are facing. Seeing your enemies, they don’t look too intimidating. The one who must be Kenta looks sickly, with drab gray hair and a slumped posture. Nobu looks properly grizzled, smoking (bad for him!), and he stands tall. Juri and Hachiro seem about equal in their nondescript appearances.

Tapping Katsu and showing him the senbon, he gets the idea and starts making handsigns at his normal speed, staring at Hachiro. He looks like any random person you’d find on the street, brown clothes, brown hair, not too tall. He looks like he’s in his early 20s. Katsu stops and no indication that he did anything reveals itself, but he puts up a thumb in a gesture of approval. Letting loose the needle, you wait to see if it hits.

Hachiro doesn’t look like he notices as the needle sinks deep into the back of his clothes, letting some blood come out and the liquid coating it enter into his stream. Numbness should show up soon. In the meanwhile, the rest of your team has made themselves known as Hideaki rushes towards Nobu with closed fists. It’s comical to see the much shorter child rush towards the tall, muscular man and throw a punch. The attack does its job though, blowing off his flak jacket and knocking him off his balance.

Osamu and Sawako rush in with vigor, the girl’s approach much slower than the boy’s and Kenta picks up on this. He jumps into the air astoundingly fast to reach a tree, then covers his eyes, appearing like he’s been blinded by an errant beam of sunlight. Juri rushes Osamu and aims a knife at his neck, and to your horror, it hits and thick red blood leaks out.

Then the boy explodes into a glob of red sap, coating the woman’s left arm before she can jump away and slowly hardening over it. It must have been a sap clone or something, tricky. Sawako seems to be focused on keeping Kenta on lock while he struggles to regain sight.

Daisuke lunges out of a tree, sword drawn, and starts going for Hachiro, only to have the older man make three handseals and place them on the ground. “Harmonious Temple Jutsu!” Four pillars of gray stone quickly surround the man and thick chains criss-cross through them, covered in tags.

Katsu’s eyes quickly change to a red wheel pattern that’s too familiar. “He’s channeling chakra through his feet to maintain that technique, he’s done for.”

Making certain that your threads are near-invisible, you start slinking Oreo through the bushes towards Kenta’s tree. Sawako doesn’t seem to be doing a good job of combatting him, her punches not fast enough to hit him, even blinded. Still, it provides a good cover as the puppet reaches position. Kenta extends a swinging fist and strikes Sawako, causing her to turn into a falling cascade of water. It was a clone too! The real Sawako must be around focusing on maintaining the Genjutsu! Maybe the original plan was to send Osamu in as an extra cover for her? Doesn’t matter, now you can help!

As this goes on, Katsu is focusing on Juri, not making any handseals but waiting. When she makes a spinning attack to counter another rush from Osamu, she glances in his direction and quickly loses balance, falling down and receiving a knee to the gut for her troubles. Katsu blinks and the Sharingan is gone, putting a hand against his forehead. Juri recovers as she tumbles and makes four handseals. “Bloody Pact Jutsu!” Osamu rushes her again, the technique lacking any apparent effect.

Hideaki’s assault on Nobu seems to be going well, punches forcing him to dig in and keep defensive. The Hyuga goes for a wide swing on him, hitting the older man in the cheek and knocking his face to the side, then the other, then the other. Nobu appears to be getting destroyed as Hideaki readies a straight right, then it all turns. When your teammate launches his strike at the seemingly-dazed man, he effortlessly bats it off-course with his forearm and slams his head into Hideaki. The boy steps back and grabs at his nose, blood leaking from his nose and a large red spot on his forehead. You can see Nobu ready his own assault, a menacing grin crossing his features.

Daisuke is just swinging at the stone temple and his sword just won’t get close. You know that Hachiro has to be feeling the poison soon though.

Using your puppet to wrap around the gray-haired guy, you see him try to escape but get interrupted by what had to have been Genjutsu as he yells out, opening his eyes. You flick the threads and Oreo starts squeezing, the cracks and snaps audible from your position as Kenta falls to the ground from his tree, screaming and writhing on the ground.Sawako bursts from the trees and lunges forward to plant a foot…

Straight into Juri’s face!? Okay, it was the intention but you didn’t expect it to work! Osamu capitalizes to continue attacking the woman… or wait, no, he’s in some sort of altered state. Eyes bloodshot, flushed face, gritted teeth, looks like something is affecting his judgment and it must be that weird jutsu she used. It’s not helping her, the genin is still on constant attack, throwing globs of sap. She doesn’t look to be doing well as she backs towards the small monument Hachiro erected.

Speaking of, you can hear grunts and screams of pain from inside it, and the chains start rattling under Daisuke’s strikes, then he makes five handsigns. “Hammerstrike!” Raising the sword over his head, you see his hands touch the metal guard and him bring it down on the chains. At the moment of impact, it flashes like lightning without thunder and the chains cleave straight down. Whatever he sees, Daisuke appears stunned by it, not making another move.

Nobu may have the upper hand right now as he makes to capitalize on Hideaki’s injury, but you can’t let that happen. Making two quick movements with your tongue then running it around your teeth to gather a small glob of thread, you lash the strand at Nobu’s leg. It’s not enough to knock him over, or do much of anything really besides throw him slightly off balance, but you pull. It’s enough and Hideaki lunges and grabs onto the smoking man, his cigarette laying off to the side in the grass.

Pulling out your small bottle of medicine, now sans club moss, you pull a senbon and throw it at Osamu with one hand. The other is focused on Oreo, making the snake wrap around Kenta’s neck and squeeze, and squeeze, and squeeze. His head slumps over and you loosen Oreo.

The needle obviously flew true, striking Osamu and making his strikes less frantic. Sawako is even keeping up, using light jabs to compensate for weak points in Osamu’s taijutsu. They’ve been training as a team, after all. Juri knocks up against Hachiro’s temple and Daisuke yells over to Osamu.

“Freeze it! Bomb!” The Kohaku gets the memo and produces a veritable wave of yellow sap and envelops both Juri and the temple, then it hardens into amber. Soon after, the large yellow crystal shatters with a boom, leaving a smoking crater. They almost died! If Osamu had been tranced he wouldn’t have been able to save them!

Hideaki is latched onto Nobu. The bigger man is obviously getting the upper hand again. “Big mistake kid! I’ve got you as an escape ticket!” If he actually did have Hideaki as a hostage, he might be right. But he’s obviously none too bright.

The boy yells and you can see large blasts bursting from both their bodies, like invisible punches rattling off into the older opponent as Hideaki holds onto him. Eventually, he lets go and the big, grizzled ninja falls over. For his part, Hideaki doesn’t look much farther off, likely having used most of his chakra reserves for whatever that was, and with blood pouring from his nose.

Katsu walks out and places a hand against a tree, covering his eyes and rubbing his temples, looking like he’s halfway between crying and passing out. Your other member of Team 9 joins him by collapsing with his back against the tree and pinching his nose. That won’t help, it’s probably broken, not just a bloody nose. Team 6 is better but not by a wide margin, Osamu is definitely in the same boat as Katsu, exhausted from both his fight and likely the medicine you administered causing him to burn more chakra. Daisuke has what look like lines of blood falling from cuts in his arms. Sawako is the only uninjured one.

Kenta and Nobu are both unconscious, the former wrapped in Oreo. Jun and Riko are nowhere to be seen.

Supporting. Its time to start the triage.

A short walk takes you to your team and you start trying to assess injuries and what’s happening. You’re no expert on how dojutsu works, so you start by checking out Hideaki. The good thing about Chakra threads is that you haven’t actually used almost any of your chakra, so you should have no problem healing everyone if need be. Hideaki moves his hand away from his nose when you approach and you use the opportunity to look at the bent feature. Yeah, it’s broken, but you can fix that. Lunging forward with speed so as not to prolong the pain, you quickly align the nose bones by pressing between your index fingers, the rest on the side of the Hyuga’s face as he lets out a less-than-manly scream. Sensing that if he were to struggle you would lose all progress, you hastily make the two seals needed and heal the broken bones. Hideaki’s hands are still covered in blood so you pour water from a canteen over them to rinse them, then do the same to rinse your gloves.

Moving over to Katsu, he waves you off. “I’m fine, just need to rest.” It definitely looks like he’s dealing with a migraine or something, tears streaming down his face as he rubs his temple. You get closer.

“I could numb you if you have a headache or something.”

“Not that, I overextended my Sharingan, that gray-haired guy was more resilient than I thought.” He has his eyes closed, probably resting them if what he said is an indication, so you shrug and move over to Team 6. Osamu is just exhausted, so you move over from him as Sawako moves him into some shade, then get to Daisuke. His arms are criss-crossed by tiny cuts that look almost like spiderwebs and each one weeps blood slowly.

“What the heck are these?” You start making the seals to heal him again, already feeling the drain on your chakra from doing the same to Hideaki. Bones are tough, making them align and fixing the marrow and everything else can be intensive, cuts are less of an issue.
>>
“That jutsu does have some backlash, but I’ve never hit something it can’t cut. It was one of my dad’s.” A sigh escapes your lips as you run your hands slowly down his arms. Lean muscle has to knit itself together as the cuts are deeper than you surmised by sight. This could have seriously hurt him if he weren’t as muscular, could have hit bone, almost did in a few places.

“Don’t do it again, you might end up shredding your arms.” He stays leaned against his sword.

“I can’t do that, it’s the strongest tool in my arsenal.”

“Well then at least look into ways to improve it, because at this rate you can only hope it finishes a fight or you’re toast.” Daisuke looks shocked.

“We’re only Genin, my dad was a Jonin and he couldn’t get around this drawback. What hope do I have?”

You're a fresh pair of eyes. Your dad might have hit the wall, but you're not him. You have your own imagination, instincts, and intelligence. Use them! Think outside the box! Experiment and make it your own. Its not be something that can be done instantly, but improving upon your dad's techniques is the ultimate respect for it... but that's my opinion.

Running your hand down to his wrist, you walk around him to start the other arm. This is difficult, you’re well-trained but you’ve never had very large chakra reserves, instructor always said it was because you were lacking physically but you can’t really help that. You make the seals again and start on the other arm. “Only reason your bones aren’t sliced is because of your muscles, you’ll have to bulk up if you want to keep going after it.”

Reaching his elbow slowly, Daisuke looks down at you. “You’d like that, wouldn’t you?” I-is he flirting!? You move your hands away, your concentration broken, it wouldn’t be good to do a bad job on these wounds. “Calm down, it was a joke.” Under the mask covering your mouth your cheeks are hot and you shake your head to yell. That was so stupid! You could have put him in a coma on accident!

“Well it wasn’t funny! I could have really hurt you there!” The boy actually does look like he feels bad about it, and almost as embarrassed as you are.

“Sorry! I-it’s a good idea, you’re probably right.” He sighs and puts up his half-recovered arm. “I swear, I can’t say anything right this week, you ever have one of those off days?”

Calming down for his sake, you make the handseals again. You’d be wasting energy by being mad at him, so you trust him that he just made a bad joke. It wasn’t something you’d ever had happen before, almost wished it was flirting, but this is a lot less awkward. Not likely he’s your type, too headstrong, it definitely would have made this whole thing weird. “Yeah, I can get that, like a bad hair day but for your tongue?”

Daisuke laughs nervously. “Yeah. I swear I’m not always like this, just had a bad week and getting punched in the gut didn’t help it.”

“I know that feeling a lot better than the other.” Why’s he still nervous? You’re healing him, obviously you forgave him.

Your hand goes down to his wrist and you take it away, brushing it on your legs to get off the bits of amber from the explosion, then pulling down your jacket a bit. Daisuke sheathes his sword and turns around. “You didn’t deserve that, that test was messed up. It’s wrong to judge people away from anything they’re good at. Fish and climbing trees, I say.”

That’s exactly what you thought all through school, nothing was made with your talents in mind besides the strategy and handseal test. “Are you trying to compliment me now?”

“I suppose it did come off that way.” Daisuke walks over to check on Osamu and Sawako.

Seeing the sorry state of the group just a tiny bit recovered, you decide it’s time to call your teachers. “All clear!” You can hear two sets of footsteps coming through the woods quickly and one is accompanied by the jingle of equipment. It’s a wonder Jun-sensei can ever stay hidden like that. Shortly after, the Jonin come out of the brush looking like they had a scuffle, hair messed up and cuts along their cloaks, a thin line along Riko’s neck that looks almost like a papercut. Maybe they’re not so good of friends.

“That took longer than I was expecting.” Jun cracks a grin and leaves his long, messy brown hair as is while Riko sets to fixing her black locks. “I was expecting a few loud thumps and silence, but there was an explosion, shouting, all very fun.”

The other Jonin sighs in relief, obviously the loser in this engagement as her telltale cut shows. “You did well, students. Very well.” She walks up to the unconscious Nobu and kneels over his head, making some hand seals and grabbing at it.

Jun takes this opportunity to look at Kenta, seeing him wrapped in Oreo, he looks at you. “What’d you dose him with?”

“Nothing, I just squeezed him until he fell.”

He leans down as Riko stands up and gives him a nod. All the other Genin seem to be minding their own business “Well, taking him with would just end up wasting time and Riko just got all the info we’d need from the other guy. Finish up the job on this one, Katsurou you dispose of the other and-”

Sawako interrupts. “Wait, we’re not capturing them?”

The one who responds is Riko. “Allow me to explain. While it might be more kind and merciful to do so, we have a schedule to keep up and the person who wants this mission done does not care about what we have to do as long as it is done on time. If we were to do that, this whole endeavor might as well have been for naught.” She uses fancy language to hide an obvious point, you preferred Jun’s explanation better. “We can’t send one of us back to the village with him as we need adequate numbers to protect the package, and we cannot take them with us because that is a large risk.”

Katsurou is staring down at Nobu, he glances over at you.

Looking from Katsu over to Jun, you’re struck by how much of a waste that would be. Just killing him may mitigate the risk, but it gives you nothing. “Sensei, may I use this opportunity to test some things on the prisoner? Our team needs time to recover and healing their wounds has left me drained.” Hideaki probably isn’t able to use his Byakugan much in his state and even though you’ve heard things about the Sharingan, Katsu is probably in the same boat.

Jun looks down at Kenta and scoffs. “Better hope there isn’t a war Yoko, they’d give you a squad with that mentality.” He stands up and stretches out. “Go ahead, we’ll night here. Just means we’ll have to take no breaks for tomorrow.” The Jonin looks over to Katsu as you start pulling your chemicals out of your pack.

“Does he need to die? His group is dead, we could make it so he can never fight again, then he could at least go forward with his life.” Katsu doesn’t sound convinced himself, but he has always been the gentle type. You know that isn’t the point though. His argument won’t work.

“In war, you have less than a second to decide to kill or be killed. If you think like that, you’re deciding to be killed.” Jun interjects more as Katsu opens his mouth. “Not letting you choose that, going to a student’s funeral is too much hassle.” He tosses a knife right by Nobu’s head.

You focus on your work, no longer seeing what’s going on, but getting a picture by the soft sound of splattering blood on grass. Testing these compounds to find what their properties are is probably the best use of your time, and you brought all the counteragents so you can go through them all! It’ll take a while but you’re nighting here anyways, so you have the time. You couldn’t have asked for a better opportunity, a test subject that deserves it, all your chemicals, and all the time you need.

Setting down three bottles, you can barely choose which one you want to start with. Settling on a choice, you waft a bit under Kenta’s nose. He wakes up with a start and tries to break free, the shock visible in his eyes. “Kenta?”

“How do you know my name? What do you want? I ju-” You shush him.

“I don’t want anything, just tell me how you feel.”

“Fuck off! My brother put me up to this, you want him. Brown jacket, can’t miss hi-” The needle sinks into his arm and he cries out in pain, silencing whatever he was going to say. He would have killed Sawako, that was what he wanted to do when he hit the water clone. Why should someone like him get any mercy himself?

Hmm, that’s not going to be good if he’s screaming the whole time it’ll make everyone uncomfortable. Certainly make you uncomfortable. So you decide to go with the middle-ground, just get enough info to make this worth it but not make everyone else too uncomfortable. The first one you’re testing takes about an hour, but if your theories are correct it’ll be worth it.

In the first few minutes, radiating from the arm where you jabbed the needle, black veins start appearing up and down Kenta’s arm. His screams indicate that they put him in immense pain if you touch them, and within ten minutes his whole forearm is covered in the black veins. It doesn’t spread too far past the injection point, but you’d guess this hand is completely unusable. In another twenty minutes, the veins in his fingertips start becoming less pronounced and bulging, but remain black, this effect falling back down to his needle-jab over a minute. You prod the arm again and this time he reacts with a louder shriek of agony, the veins around the area you prodded flaring up again. Testing this effect for another half an hour, you believe the effect may be permanent, even if the poison is not ingestable so the mister is out. You could probably use this compound to make poisons with other permanent effects. Shrugging, you move to the other arm and test the next one.

To your dismay, it does much the same up until the thirty minute mark where the skin of the hand starts to necrotize. Chunks of flesh start falling off and you tourniquet the arm so this doesn’t ruin the further tests. Observing it, the flesh seems to melt into a material similar to mulch and you wonder how this could be used in other poisons. Further research is needed. Moving on from his ruined arms, you decide to apply the last one orally.

A small drip is all you need and the compound starts turning his tongue a deep corpse green, his screams becoming muffled and the appendage lolling like it lacks any control. Seeing the rest of the effects, you notice over the next hour that the muscles in his jaw start to slacken, also affected and now being unable to move under his power. With no doubt, were you to let this continue, his mouth would no longer be usable for even eating. This… it’s much, even for you, and you feel like you’re going to vomit. Instead, you decide to end it and plant a senbon between Kenta’s eyes.

Looking back towards the woods, you can see a small campfire.

Pulling out and diluting the acids you want to use, you pour them each over a different part of the body and wait. Writing notes in your book, you observe as the liquids eat through the flesh and sigh. This is boring. You pick up Oreo from the grass around Kenta’s corpse and wrap him around your shoulders. He did a good job and so you rub his head. The smell from the corpse reminds you of rotten leaves, so you write it down as the liquid eats the body. The fastest-acting one didn’t take care of bones, leaving a bloody bit of femur. You kick it away in frustration.

Packing up your chemicals, you walk back over to the fire as your tummy grumbles. How are you hungry after that? Everyone is looking at you as you take a seat at a log, starting writing in your notebook again.

Katsu is the first to speak. “Did you learn anything?” He sounds less calm than he normally does, more like he does when he yells, it’s not a good sound. You pay him no mind as you take a ration from the pack of them and start eating with water.

“Yeah, got a lot of information on some compounds that are hard to test without seriously hurting someone.” You put a piece of jerky in your mouth as you work through the notes with a pencil making changes. Neglecting the fact that you only cut it short because it would worry them, you point behind you at the field. “Got rid of the mess too.”

He scoffs and looks at the fire before Sawako returns from a small brown tent that looks like it’s made from heavy canvas. She takes a seat between Katsu and you as you catch glimpses of Osamu and Hideaki in sleeping bags inside the tent. Must be where they’re recovering from the strain they were put under. They’re both definitely powerful, what Osamu did was insane with creating that much of an element from chakra, and what Hideaki did with his hold was something you’d considered but never thought you’d see in action.

Sawako looks over at you and quickly looks back to the fire. “Are you hurt?” She seems a little scared, and you can kind of get why. That person tried to kill her, but screams of agony for hours on end could probably make anyone a bit uneasy.

“Nah, just a bit tired from healing the two numbskulls of the group. Good job back there, by the way. Both of you.” Maybe focusing on what you all did right would help calm their nerves? “Oh, you feeling okay Katsu?”

“Good enough, but screams aren’t really a good thing to hear while trying to relax.” The statement seems pretty pointed.

“Sorry, had to find out what he was feeling somehow. I did stop early though, had the same thought.”

You stand up and put away your book, ripping a piece off the jerky and grimacing at the taste. “Where are Jun-sensei and Riko, they said they were going to train us.” This isn’t something you’re good with, but it is familiar. People are your friends and they like you well enough, then you do something weird and they just kind of go away, only ones who haven’t done that are Takuya and you guess Sawako now. It’s not like there was any better option, now you know what those poisons do and one day you might end up saving lives with them in a war.

Sawako is the one to respond. “They said they were going to secure the site and try to find the grave. Also that we should get some rest.” You might have wanted to curl up, but you know there’s no comfort in that and comfort is something you can’t afford to give yourself out here anyways.

“I’m going to find them so I can get a headstart.”

“I’ll go with you.” Sawako stands up and walks over by you. Great.

Straining your ears, you can hear voices off in the distance, so you follow them. Eventually, you and Sawako come upon the two sitting on a rock and talking, their cloaks draped under them as they lay down and look at the sky. You did guess those things had to be warm a bit ago, and their underclothes just seem like normal shinobi fare. Huh.

“I know, but that might have been a bit much.” Riko is the one talking. “Sure, you’ve done it with your last kids, but they weren’t like him.”

Jun lets out a sigh. “Trust me, it’s better to get this done now instead of later. He’s not as fragile as you’d like to believe, and don’t think I don’t know the reason you’re focused on him matchmaker. The clans may hate me but I bet they hate you even more for ruining their little plans so often.” He lets out a dark chuckle.

Sawako is straining her ears. “I can’t hear.” You place a finger to her lips.

Thanks to her, you missed part of Riko’s response. “-the principle of the thing. You can’t cage it like that, it’s not some animal you can bait with meat.”

“Wow, write a speech why don’t you?” Jun’s response is reflected by a frown on his face.

“Come off it, I know your game too, only reason you’re not retired eh?” Riko might be taunting him, but you get the feeling Jun isn’t paying full attention to her.

That's reasonable.

But we do need tot est poisons on people. It's just a straight up fact. You can train a jutsu with repetition and normal training, but you can't train lethal poison techniques without using some lethal poisons.

We already tested a non-lethal poison on our teammate, what the hell are we expected to do with the lethal variety? Not test them at all?

The other kids really need to reserve their fucking judgment. Our specialty REQUIRES this or else we'll never develop. It's a fact of our life.

You walk out of the trees and Sawako follows. “Hey, we were wondering about that training we were promised.” Getting a closer look at Jun without his cloak on, you can see fresh bruises and old scars, the biggest being a large horizontal mass of tissue on his neck, like his throat was cut. He makes no effort to hide them.

“Oh, you’re done, go rest. Better to train technique when you’re at your top and working the way down, we’ll start tomorrow.” He’s dismissive, even as Riko quickly puts her cloak back on in what looks to be embarrassment. “Really should be careful about what you do with people you capture, what you did would get you a target on your back if they were from another village.”

Sawako asks a question immediately. “They weren’t from another village?”

“Nope, can’t tell you anything more until we can report this.” He continues lounging, lazy as ever.

Riko crouches down to talk to you and Sawako, you hate that, it makes you feel like a kid. “Don’t worry about him, he’s just grouchy. Nothing you two did.” And now you’re being treated like a child. The others are treating you like some scary monster and the adults keep treating you like a kid! Which you are but… it doesn’t feel good.

Not gonna lie, I kinda want to end up being Orochimaru's Morality Pet. Like, we are super unethical when it comes to prisoners, but innocents and village-mates are off-limits for us, and... we could impress that on him, maybe. I know he's already done terrible things by now, but imagine the consequences of such a change...
>>
>>2078347
If we really want to save orochinaru from himself, we need to make him okay with death
>>
>>2078364
How does one DO that, though?

I guess if he mentions living forever to her and she rejects it, even knowing what could happen, it might make him at least pause for a minute, but there's not much that can be done for psychopathy
>>
>>2078364
No we don't. We need to accelerate his immortality research and get in on that shit. He actually did it, his research paid off.
>>
>>2078364
That would imply giving up on his goal to learn literally every ninjutsu and technique. I don't think that's gonna happen.
>>
>>2078364
He was able to attain true immortality that itself has no negative repercussions on innocents (Possession of a White Zetsu body) well within a reasonable human lifespan (53 years)

It's well within reason for him to not want to die, he can do it with a comparatively minor amount of effort than you would think for avoiding something as absolute as death
>>
>>2078417
It was just... he did a lot of awful shit to get to that point.
>>
>>2078347
Also of note, on this bit
>I know he's already done terrible things by now
We actually don't know. We are earlier in the timeline than I think you realize. All of the terrible things we know he does in canon are several years from now, the worst thing we see him do by this point is suggest killing the Rain kids so they don't have to grow up in a war-torn shithole. It's even entirely possible that he is currently just as "bad" as we've recently become, and only experiments on captured enemies and such
>>
>>2078590
Oh, I understand that. I mean at the end of it all, after he has immortality figured out. He did a ton of unforgivable shit to gain knowledge faster, but could he reach the same solution in a lifetime while observing some basic morality? I don't believe so, personally, but maybe with our girl around he'll look at the problem differently?

Just a thought is all, he's got a while to go before he hits the point of no return, and we might be along for Mr. Snek's Wild Ride if we can't soften him a bit.
>>
I don't think yoko is the kind to be obsessed with immortality. I think were grounded enough to know deaths apart of life. I can see her wanting knowledge of every jutsu though. I think Yoko is just a really smart kid, who does this ninja thing to better her and her families lot in life, and wants to do her job as a ninja as well as the clan people. I do think she might be growing towards the cold/ professional side. Maybe we want to be in Anbu? We were practicing with a mask on at the beginning of the first thread.
>>
>>2078720
Assuming that we don't go down the same path as pedosnek, I could see us becoming a less unhinged version of Orochimaru that is still faithful to Konoha.
>>
>>2078794
A split from konoha might be pretty interesting, I'd want to have some good reasons for doing it though.
>>
>>2078720
Anbu is probably a good path/goal, maybe also leading in the intelligence or science departments as a head or team leader. Seems like Yoko could do a lot in the future and, being a support shinobi, she probably has a much brighter future gaining leadership in the village over the conventional field nin veteran path most mc's walk.
>>
>>2078720
Also, I kind of also saw our mask as kakashi style, but yoko usually isn't wearing it over her mouth all that much except on missions and fights.
>>
>>2078805
I meant that we would basically aspire to Orochi's old position once he defects, not that we'd split from Konoha.

While I agree it would be interesting to basically be a missing nin who's still loyal, I think it would tax our poor QM a little too hard to run the quest that far off the rails.
>>
>>2078821
So we either be LoliSnek or Anbu (don't even THINK about that Root business).

I can live with that.
>>
>>2078845
Hey, I'm lame, not poor.

I am fine with many things, including following into missing-nin.
>>
>>2078829
I've actually always been fond of Haku's mask.
>>
>>2078851
Considering how we're voting heavily to idolize Oro-senpai, would anyone actually trust us in the aftermath of him defecting? Assuming things play out that way of course.
>>
>>2078851
I mean, good chance we could do both. A bu in our younger adult life, high end government leadership after a couple years of developing our equipment, poisons, and Justus out on the field. Plus we can totally push puppetry advancement and get magic ninja robot soldiers a couple decades before everyone else. Sand village would be salty about it, it IS their unique thing.
>>
>>2078866
Oh god are we gonna take Anko's place in canon?
>>
>>2078866
That strongly depends on the circumstances. There's a world of difference between a starstruck student who was horrified by the truth and a close apprentice who had to have known what he was planning but told no one.
>>
>>2078886
>>2078890
Is it weird that I desperately want us to take over Anko's role? Having our old team shun us except maybe Jun-sensei. Only able to have an emotionally open conversation with our parents. It'd definitely be different and I love the idea.

“Is Jun-sensei retiring?” You could breach the other topics right now, but getting the one that hits close to home takes priority. Sawako looks mortified at the idea, but Riko laughs and ruffles your hair like your dad does. You swat her hand away, doing much less than you would have hoped. Only Dad gets to do that.

“No, he just likes to pretend he’s old sometimes. He could never retire, even if he wanted to. Trust me even if he hasn’t done any of it yet, he likes teaching.” Jun seems to just be letting this happen, but for some reason he’s holding up one finger at Riko who is standing firm.

Making one of the biggest mistakes someone can make with a person like her, Sawako responds. “Why? He doesn’t seem like it.” Jun waves the finger so that Riko becomes aware of it again.

She smiles and stands up. “Because as much as he pretends not to, he cares. Why would he have had so many teams if he didn’t?” That makes sense, but you were expecting a full speech and large amounts of fanfare, a haughty laugh, anything. She almost sounded sincere. Looking back to Jun, you see he has four fingers up now.

“Oh don’t mind me, just keeping tally.” He pushes down one finger. “Riko sees her team as her children and-” He pushes down another finger. “She’s a very overbearing mother. I’ll save these two for later.” Closing his fist, Jun stands up and puts his cloak on in a flash, the inside never seen. Sawako looks confused and you kind of have to agree. Do they keep score on things they don’t want to say?

“Sooo… he’s not retiring. Okay. It would have made sense with all that you weren’t around for.” You clear the air with your question. Jun scoffs.

“You all weren’t ready, none of you had any idea of your style, or who you were out of the Academy. I don’t teach templates, I teach children. People who have ideals and beliefs and strengths and weaknesses beyond simple numbers on a sheet from some half-brained proctor.” His face is serious as the collar of his cloak goes around the scar on his neck. Riko looks unimpressed even though Sawako does.

“Wow, write a speech why don’t you?” The other Jonin starts walking back for the camp. “Come on, the boys have probably lit the camp on fire.” The group follows her, Jun staying by you.

You look over at Jun, stone-faced as you can manage in your confusion, and ask him a question. “What was the fingers thing?” It’s made you curious, so of course now you want to know, but you have to be careful, Jun lies.

“Well since the cat is out of the bag, I was bribed to take you all on this mission, by Riko. Don’t ask me why, I now only have one point left and I don’t want to waste it. Anyways, the fingers is keeping track of favors. She told you two enough for you to figure out four things I don’t want you to know, hence four points. I got her back by saying two things, and now a third to tell you about the bribe.” You kind of get it now, but the way he says favors and bribe is a bit fishy. Not your place to question what she bribed him with, it got you on this mission.

“What was the bribe?”...it slipped out.

Jun cracks a grin. “I’ll tell you when you’re older. Actually probably not. No definitely not.”

Confused again, you ask the other question on your mind. “What’s the scar on your neck from?” This makes him stop smiling and return to a walk, you can see his hand tremble a little bit.

“I was given an impromptu tracheotomy in the war.” Sensing your surprise, he elaborates. “I was part of a small recon force in what is now the eastern border of Amegakure. We were gassed, only thing that saved me from dying was my training, everyone else? Not so much. Even then, my entire throat and nose were like raw hamburger, so they had to do surgery. Don’t know who did the procedure, but I survived and that was the only mark left.”

You look down. “Wow, that’s…” Horrible, awesome, terrifying. Lots of things. It’s a lot of things.

“Yeah. I’m the lucky one. The whole poison thing was my bright idea when I was trained, some of the effects from older trials are still kicking around me. But it saved my life and I refined it, so what can you do?” You’re unclear what effects he’s talking about but you refrain from asking.

Arriving back at camp, you see Katsu huddled like he does sometimes next to the tent and fire with Daisuke tending the roaring flame.

You tap Sawako on the shoulder. “You mind giving me a hand with the tent? I’m kind of sleepy.” She looks confused and tilts her head.

“We’re going to be in the same tent?”

“Yeah, it’s not like you’re sleeping in the same one as Daisuke.” Being merciful, you don’t bring up Katsu. Maybe some time will help him get over what he did?

“I guess not, I thought you wouldn’t want to after I brought up your cr-” Pulling up two strings you have Oreo lash around her neck to silence her and start dragging her away from Daisuke, who looks very entertained by this.

You put up hand to wave and smile. “Just going to pitch a tent!” That was close. Nobody should know about that. When you get over there, Sawako starts helping you pick up and set the tent. It doesn’t take long and soon you’re inside under a small, thin blanket reading your notes. They’re very thorough, each little interaction you observed is recorded, and you really wish you had something sweet to nibble on as you read. Soon, you put is away and close your eyes…

We'll buy some sweets with the reward pay as a congratulations to ourself. Then maybe save the rest for a new puppet.
>>
>>2079825
If we decide to make a sibling for Oreo, what should it be?

Maybe something cute like a spider that specializes in medicine, or alternatively something that specializes in combat since we're a bit weak on that point.
>>
>>2079825

Or we could just upgrade Oreo. Or build a new puppet.
>>
>>2079825
A new puppet would be ideal
Something more specialized for melee
>>
I'm agreeing with something specializing in Combat. I've had thoughts about unconventional weaponry too, like barbed wire, if we had a puppet that was able to expel it like a spider does thread, if a ninja gets wrapped up or caught in it we're putting some hurt on them. Then spitting some sort of contact poison would be able to find its way into the blood stream easily. Also down for upgrading Oreo, but it would be things to add to his durability or something to defend us better.
>>
Also with our water affinity, being able to get a puppet to produce a big enough shock, and water proofing and grounding it somehow, could also add something to our offense game.
>>
>>2080443
Maybe a hallow internal chamber to hold captured targets, including the same poison spray machine we use in oreo to continually spray a sleep poison?
>>
>>2080477
That's also a very good idea, and would be pretty good for capture type missions. Also a possible good place for us to hide, we are pretty tiny, suddenly while fighting our puppet splits open and we spit a short range Jutsu right in their face.
>>
>>2080491
It also works with the whole wire idea
Add some kunai launchers, explosive paper dispencerrs and some slots on the interior to stab longer blades into for an easy kill and we have a trap puppet

To stop strong bois from breaking out
Their got to be some chakra resistent wood out their to stop fire ball spammers though
Also sponsership from orochimaru could help with the cost

I think a large capture puppet might be a bit too ambitious for this point in the story, largely due to cost. I strongly doubt Orochi would shell out money for us, and one robust enough to be secure with all the bells and whistles would also probably be too heavy for Yoko to lift, given her tiny build. This would restrict us to either riding on it or using a sealing scroll when traveling, and we'll probably need it sealed when we need to haul ass.

Still, I wouldn't mind making a large assault-capture puppet down the line when we have more resources to work with. For now though, let's stick to something more economical that shores up our weaknesses.
>>
I say our next puppet should be a spider/octopus. Latches onto people and trips them up or poisons them outright.
>>
Why not a couple of small frogs that shoot poison darts?
Easy to control and cheap to make

Your dreams are calm, quiet, and just enough to ensure you have a good night’s sleep. Must have been a bit more hungry than you thought, you’re just dreaming about a nice home-cooked meal with friends. It’s not really clear who these friends are, but the feeling it gives you being around them is warm and inviting. There are jokes, stories, laughs, none of them you understand but it’s the feeling of it that sticks. Near the end of the dream, someone taller than you puts a hand on your shoulder and leads you outside to look at stars, and you’re focused on them imagining all the things that could exist in that inky blackness. The time before you wake up is reflective, you’ve never thought about it before this point, why you’re alone, and as the melancholy of the moment sets in with a bittersweet tinge the person who brought you out embraces you for comfort. Then you wake up rested, if in the undignified position of face-down, head buried in your bedroll. You get up and get dressed quickly, Sawako already up, and grab Oreo.

When you step outside, a thin mist of rain is over the camp so you put up a hood on your jacket. A wooden box, cubic in shape with winding symbols all over it, sits to the side of the camp. Jun, Sawako, and Hideaki are up, all covered in mud and warming by the fire. Sawako stares at the fire when you sit down, seemingly avoiding eye contact. Hideaki looks like he’s doing much better now, his nose just bruised now. You’re just glad that you know how to line up the bones, a crooked nose is ugly.

Jun scoffs. “Sleeping beauty awakens. I take it you’re going to want to do some foraging in the Grass, right?” You nod, still a bit groggy after a good night’s sleep as you start stretching yourself out. Just don’t really feel like talking, the sound of chirping birds and light fall of rain on leaves is enough to continue the calm from the dream.

“You look relaxed, sleep well?” Sawako looks like she might be nervous at your answer. Did you say things in your sleep? She said you mumble in your sleep.

“Yeah, I was pretty tired.”

“Never got to say, but thanks for fixing my nose.” Hideaki doesn’t look upset in the slightest like Katsu did, but maybe he gets why you had to test on that guy.

You shrug as you crack your neck. “No problem.” It kind of was, but that would be rude to say to him.

“So, who wants this dead body so bad?” You ask the question out loud and Jun sighs.

“A religious order out of Ishigakure, apparently they’re offering a reward for the return of a sage’s corpse and the Village has decided it’s worth it to send this guy back.” Huh, well that answered your other question about why those other people had been after it too. But it does mean there may be more resistance if other people know about this, so obviously it’ll have to be sealed or something to make its transfer less conspicuous.

Hideaki raises his hand and Jun sighs again before moving his hand in a motion to signify he should go along. “If we’re going to be gone for three weeks, doesn’t that mean we should be there by next week at the latest? Because we have to use the rest of the time to get back to the village.” He sounds like he’s proud of himself for realizing this.

Jun pinches the bridge of his nose and closes his eyes. “That is correct. Good on you for noticing that.” He walks over and pulls a scroll out of his cloak, then presses it against the box causing it to disappear in a puff of smoke. The Jonin puts away the scroll as Riko exits her tent looking like she had a horrible night, bags under her eyes that quickly fade away when she yawns and Sawako looks at her. Is this some kind of illusionary makeup? That’s smart.

Katsu and Daisuke come back from out of the woods and the former looks at you for a long moment before sitting down. Daisuke’s arms are covered in a spiderweb of bruises as he pulls the sleeves of his long jacket down. Everyone is silent as Osamu exits out of the tent he shared with Hideaki, groaning. Once the group is warm, they take little time packing the wet tents and placing them on their packs. You groan with the renewed weight.

Riko and Jun whisper at one another before Hideaki raises his hand for a question. Jun responds quickly. “Going to water the bushes, be ready to leave when I’m back.” He’s off into the shrubs before anyone can respond.

You walk over to Katsu and tap him on the shoulder, making it clear you want to talk alone, the look he gives is one of disdain but he follows you away from the main group. Deciding to cut to the heart of the matter, you speak bluntly. “What’s up? You’ve been less depressed over the last month and now you’re back to how you used to be. It’s worrying.”

He scowls. “You tortured that man, we all heard it. Doesn’t it disturb you what you did? Even a little? How much did he suffer before you killed him? Or did you just let the poison do its job?” Oh, that would be it, you remember how he hesitated when Jun had him kill Nobu. But there is something else to what happened when you tested that poison on him before. He had never used his Sharingan before that, even when it would have helped, so you come to the conclusion that he couldn’t. It couldn’t have been the pain or the poison, he didn’t use them when Jun poisoned him. So it must have been something that let him use them. Then it hits you where he was going afterwards.

“I ended his life quickly once I felt he had suffered enough. He would have killed Sawako if she hadn’t been a clone. Did you realize that?” The words hit him like a punch to the gut and he closes his eyes. “Look at me.” Katsu opens his eyes, and you can see them watering. “What I did was kinder than what he deserved, for the suffering he would have caused us all if he’d been successful. The only reason I killed him quickly and didn’t leave him to rot was because that would have disturbed Hideaki. He doesn’t know her, he wouldn’t have been affected by her loss, so he wouldn’t get it. I thought you would.” Some of what you said are lies, you knew Katsu would react this way, so you held back for both of them. But the feelings are real.

The Uchiha continues looking forward, then shakes his head. “It’s not right to kill people, let alone torture them. The first one gets a pass because we do it to protect the ones we care about but-” You cut him off.

“You think I tortured him for the sake of it? No. I did what I did because I needed to test lethal poisons that could be used in a war, that man just gave me the final shove when he tried to kill Sawako. I’d never do that to someone who wouldn’t do the same.” That’s not a lie.

He sighs, puts a hand to his head, and looks down. “Okay. I can accept that.” Katsu still doesn’t look happy.

“You should tell Sawako how you feel after this mission, she brought this silly croaking frog toy that she lost the stick for.”

“...it’s a toad.” He glumly corrects you.

“And that scarf is salmon, not pink.” You smile as he turns beet red.

The past few days have been brutal, no breaks for one of them and the other two across ravines with barely-kept old bridges. Going on the main roads would have been asking for trouble, so your group was forced to forge its own way, training along the journey. During that time, Jun-sensei and Riko had been training everyone on tree-walking, and you quickly found it was for you. You’d always boasted great chakra control from practice with medical jutsu and your threads, but it served you well here. While everyone else was still mastering the finer points of walking up the trees, you were already on to attempting to stand on water. It’s hard, whenever you’re trying to focus the center shifts and you fall in, but when you’re almost done and you just give up it works. Sure, it might be easy to say ‘don’t focus on it’ but that’s really hard in practice.

It doesn’t help that the light rain has been persistent, not letting up a bit and soaking every piece of equipment. You weatherproofed Oreo long ago, but if you hadn’t he’d be soaked to the metaphorical bone by now. Luckily, you’ve been given time to stop in the first bamboo forest of this country for ingredients.

Recalling what you know, the snakes are likely burrowed in small holes around here, Kusagakure has a bit of a reputation for having dangerous snakes with odd qualities. Some even burrow into the bamboo to lunge out and attack prey. But what you hope to find is a rare variety that supposedly mesmerizes small animals before eating them using a venom that turns their muscles to the equivalent of jelly. Being able to replicate the mesmerization in either a technique or by somehow finding the way it does it would be amazing, even if you aren’t sure that’s true. And its venom would be a valuable thing to obtain. If you could capture one and milk it…

You might be thinking a bit too highly though, other varieties might be good. A more common snake that rasps away its shelters with a spiny tongue and a pulping acid would be a good thing to dissect for info on an acid-dispension method on Oreo that won’t end up destroying him. A surprisingly average species is said to be able to change its scales to match patterns, another possible upgrade if you can observe it changing. And that’s just snakes.

...there is no info on where the Yellow-skull Frog resides other than this country and by poisonous mushrooms. It might be in the fungal growth forests...but the moisture under a bamboo forest might breed poisonous mushrooms for it to utilize. It’s a longshot, but it’s possible. A compound that can cause poison to be skin-soluble. If you can catch one of those frogs and keep it to harvest you could kiss being underestimated goodbye. Your thick gloves twitch in anticipation.

Looking around, you start jumping through the bamboo, startling birds and bugs alike but doing an awful lot of work for this. The branches won’t support weight so you end up putting your tree-walking to good use. It’s long and arduous, each step coming close to bowing the grass and putting you on the floor. But you make it work and eventually find a snake. Quickly lunging a hand at it, you let it sink its fangs into your thick glove and hold it there as it wriggles. Observing its scales first, they’re a yellowish green, not matching any of the varieties you’d care about, but then you check its tongue to be sure. It’s the same forked as any other. Disappointing.

The soles of your feet aching from exertion, you drop down to the floor of the forest and slowly rub the snake’s head to make it let go. It does, and you release it, the glove no worse off from the two marks. You’re not going jumping through the bamboo again, that took way too long and the sun is starting to set. As you look around, you think if you’re fast you might be able to eke out something to make this trip worth it.
