It’s 2025, and a team of firefighters arrive on the scene of a massive conflagration. There’s trucks and ladders, but also a team of drones tethered to a massive generator. As the drones swarm the flames, they blast a guttural roar that sounds like the unholy offspring of a bullfrog and a lawnmower. Firefighters follow up with hoses and foam, and within minutes, nothing but wisps of smoke are curling up from cooling embers.

That vision of the future could be possible thanks to a small, sound-powered fire extinguisher developed by two college seniors, Viet Tran and Seth Robertson, both at George Mason University in Virginia.

>Why aren't we stopping forest fires with subwoofers on drones?
Probably due to the power consumption of subwoofers that powerful on a drone, as well the risk of injuring firefighters. That's a lot of sound energy to be just pumping it into the air like that. Maybe you could have multiple subwoofers to create targetable constructive interference so that it's more controllable and less dangerous.

sound don't do shit about heat

Couldn't you just target an area miles away from humans, so there's no risk for them?
And then fly the drone out to the location, so firefighters wouldn't be a risk either?
You could use a battery pack to power it, like Tesla's car. Maybe even put solar on top if that helps regenerate the batteries even a little bit.

>>9864722
Actually, why not just convert the forest fire heat to electricity for the drone/speaker, like thermoelectrics?
>>
>>9864667
Why? This is nothing more than a really inefficient fan. It does the same thing as a smoke ring cannon hooked to a subwoofer.
>>

well wouldn't the low frequency penetrate the fire further than wind? that would make it more effective than wind.

because acoustic fire suppression does not work all that well right now and it might not scale. It would be interesting to see if acoustic holography and phased array techniques could be used to suppress fires:

One can get quite intense localized sound this way.
>>9864764
nope, it works on an entirely different principle. With strong enough sound one can separate the hot gas from the burning material. A fan makes things worse because this adds new oxygen to the fire, while if we use sound waves that move back and forth, oxygen runs out and combustion byproducts accumulate. At least that's how we think it works

This is cool stuff.
Do you have an opinion on using this method to fight fires?
>>
>>9864710
Good God what a mad man!
>>
>>9865082
The initial report seems to suggest it's probably not practical. It might work better for fighting fires in zero g though.

At this point I think people just post this just to be incendiary.

What are you doing lads

Because they would have to drop the bass first.

Uhh you would target the area with the fire... you dumb fuck. Which is often someone’s home.
