The Message is a 1976 epic historical drama film directed by Moustapha Akkad, chronicling the life and times of the Islamic prophet Muhammad.

In accordance with Islamic law, director Moustapha Akkad's biopic of Mohammad never actually depicts the prophet himself, but rather outlines his story through the lives of certain cardinal figures in his life. Abu Sofyan (Michael Ansara), the leader of Mecca, Mohammad's uncle, Hamza (Anthony Quinn), and others chronicle the persecution of the earliest Muslims, their escape to Medina and their eventual victorious return to Mecca under the prophet's leadership.

It's amazing how accurately they portray some characters. Down to incredibly obscure historical figures that don't even have a Czech Wikipedia article that I could only find in untranslated Czech documents dating back quite far.
It's unfortunate they make up such a small portion of the Hussite Wars, not even concluding the first one, and simply ending with the first major battle involving Zizka. Good films though if you don't mind there not being a full resolution.

>This trilogy will be of interest to medieval history fans as well as those who have played Kingdom Come: Deliverance.
This. I implore anyone who played KCD to watch these movies. Unfortunately Jan Zizka onwards has some forced Soviet propaganda placed in (like the Hussites not wanting a King because they think having a leader is bad which is not true because King Jiri Z Podebrany is the biggest counter-argument to that claim), but that can easily be ignored because it's not as in your face as other Soviet controlled movies and there's more religious messages thankfully. Jan Hus is completely devoid of any Soviet imagery or messages though thankfully.
The Trilogy as a a whole is extremely historically accurate if you ignore the dumb forced soviet dialogue.
>>

From what I've seen, films about (pre-1900) history made in the old Communist world generally aren't as propaganda filled as one might expect. As you said the Hussite films are pretty okay in this regard, the Hussites were largely a peasant movement fulled by socio-economic and proto-nationalist unrest which is enough to imply a broadly Marxian interpretation without having to force some form of dialectical materialism upon the matter. The Stars of Eger, Colonel Wolodyjowski and the Deluge were all made during the Communist period and have no overt politicization. Even 'And Quiet flows the Don' set during the Civil War and filmed int he 1950's has an ambivalent attitude to the Bolsheviks as in the novel.

Yeah they did try to force some in Jan Zizka, but it can easily be overlooked. There's barely any propaganda in Jan Hus though. It's still barely noticible though, although when it does appear it does stick out like a sore thumb compared to the rest of the movie and can easily be ignored.
>largely a peasant movement fulled by socio-economic and proto-nationalist unrest which is enough to imply a broadly Marxian interpretation without having to force some form of dialectical materialism upon the matter.
To an extent, but the Hussites had better idea on how to still maintain society whilst having an economical and religious reform, it's incomparable to Marx because arguably they did have better ways of executing it than Marx did.
>The Stars of Eger, Colonel Wolodyjowski and the Deluge were all made during the Communist period and have no overt politicization.
An odd thing I noticed, Polish films rarely got this treatment, it was Czech films that got this treatment, then again the Czech secret police was on par with the Russian one so it could've been stricter. IIRC a Roadside Picnic adaptation literally had all copies of it destroyed in Czechoslovakia once it aired on television and it's considered a lost movie. So it was stricter in Czechia than in Poland

>To an extent, but the Hussites had better idea on how to still maintain society whilst having an economical and religious reform, it's incomparable to Marx because arguably they did have better ways of executing it than Marx did.
Indeed, its a pity that historical analysis of the 'Radical Reformation' is mostly restricted to Marxist historians trying to fit it into their theories as a crisis of the feudal order moving to proto-capitalism.
>An odd thing I noticed, Polish films rarely got this treatment, it was Czech films that got this treatment
There probably was a difference based on how autistic the elites of each state were towards the political purity of media, i'm more familiar with the cinema of the USSR itself which definately become more 'liberal' after Stalin. Depends on what one defines as 'Communist' propaganda as opposed to 'USSR' propaganda though; a film about the 'glorious Soviet struggle against Nazi Germany' is not necessarily a statement of the truth of Marxism, such as how the Hussite films might of been intended to legitimatize the Czechoslovak regime as much if not more so than say the Hussites were proto-Marxists.

I do find it quite interesting how the sense of Soviet propaganda was much higher in the second and third films. I like Jan Hus the most especially since it tells a full story, but it definitely does not have the same propaganda just like you guys are saying.
It's the absurd irony of some Marxists to instantly hear something like expropriation of the church and automatically attaching it to Marxist dialectics even though it was simply based on scripture.
>peasants and other kinds of commoners set up an egalitarian society in Tabor based on teachings from Jan Hus
>WOAH LOOK GUYS PROTOCOMMUNISTS
At least it's quite clear the director had no care for shoving that in on his own accord. If he did, Jan Hus would have been full of it. I think the latter two moves saw greater overview from the media enforcement after initial success. Proti Vsem was made several years after Jan Hus, so the span of time would fit this idea.
>>
>>896463
From the point of view of Marxists it is quite logical to assume the Hussites or any other peasant uprisings were proto-communists fulfilling the iron laws of historical materialism as per their deterministic worldview, but once you jettison that determinism (which liberalism also kind of shares - 'progress', 'right side of history' etc) it becomes absurd to think Christian peasants setting up an Utopian society would be the result of anything other than Biblical influence. We really cannot understand history if we're just projecting our beliefs unto past people rather than trying to understand their views and beliefs.

Jan Hus is definitely the best of the trilogy because it captures the essence of the religious aspect and personal martyrdom well, whereas the other two have to get through the historical events quickly.

The Taking of Power by Louis XIV

This docudrama by Roberto Rossellini focuses on French king Louis XIV (Jean-Marie Patte). When the powerful de facto leader, Cardinal Mazarin (Silvagni), dies, youthful Louis seizes control of the country. Before long, the flamboyant ruler clashes with indulgent nobleman Nicolas Fouquet (Pierre Barrat) and lays out his plan to consolidate his power. Working closely with finance minister Jean-Baptiste Colbert (Raymond Jourdan), Louis XIV establishes a reign that continues for decades.

This lush, Technicolor tragic romance from Luchino Visconti stars Alida Valli as a nineteenth-century Italian countess who, during the Austrian occupation of her country, puts her marriage and political principles on the line by engaging in a torrid affair with a dashing Austrian lieutenant, played by Farley Granger. Gilded with ornate costumes and sets and a rich classical soundtrack, and featuring fearless performances, this operatic melodrama is an extraordinary evocation of reckless emotions and deranged lust, from one of the cinema’s great sensualists.

G. W. Pabst brought the war movie into a new era with his first sound film, a mercilessly realistic depiction of the nightmare that scarred a generation, in Germany and beyond. Digging into the trenches with four infantrymen stationed in France in the final months of World War I, Pabst illustrates the harrowing ordeals of battle with unprecedented naturalism, as the men are worn away in body and spirit by firefights, shelling, and the disillusion that greets them on the home front.

>Indeed, its a pity that historical analysis of the 'Radical Reformation' is mostly restricted to Marxist historians trying to fit it into their theories as a crisis of the feudal order moving to proto-capitalism.
Yep, what's even more amusing is that ironically IIRC Marx considered the Hussites to be a failure and a bunch of reactionists and the Czechs to be a cursed country. I could be wrong.
>There probably was a difference based on how autistic the elites of each state were towards the political purity of media,
Pretty much, Czechia's state secret police was pure autism though.
>Depends on what one defines as 'Communist' propaganda as opposed to 'USSR' propaganda though
What I mostly mean is historical untruths being added to make it closer to marxism. So the term Communist propaganda is correct there. USSR propaganda would be for instance Alexander Nevsky. For the communist propaganda I meant for instance how in the Hussite Trilogy there's this insistance that the Hussites are anti-King and anti-Emperor. They were most certainly anti-Emperor historically, but the idea of them being anti-monarchists is a pure falsity. They liked the monarchy but they liked having a "pure Czech King" like Ottokar II or a foreign King that represented Czech values like Charles IV. That's why they put Jiri Z Podebrany as King, since he was a pure Czech King and pro-Hussite. Until then, Jan Zizka was the military leader in order to make the Hussites grow as a group. in the movie though it just portrays them as anti-monarchy because muh marxism.

I agree

>At least it's quite clear the director had no care for shoving that in on his own accord.
He didn't. In an interview if I remember he admitted he had to so that the movie trilogy could be released without any problems, he wasn't fond of regime since he made fun of it in a few of his other films. So he was already on thin ice so he had to make a movie appealing to them to an extent (albeit subtly so it wouldn't be distracting), it seems initially that wasn't his plan since Jan Hus definietely had an absence of that, but as the threat loomed forward, he was kinda forced to otherwise the movie sequels would've never been released.
As for the last comment, I definitely agree there.
>>896468
That's true, from their perspective they'd immediately assume that, but if you take a closer look, it's really quite obvious there's a far more religious aspects since their idea of how the materialism should be handled was based on how they (correctly) perceived Jesus as someone who would give everything to a poor person in dire need, which the Church was a complete contradiction of, hence why they were against that.
Jan Hus is definetely the best of the trilogy, since it represents Jan Hus' ideology, plus the way that Jan Zizka was slowly introduced and first appearing as a background character was kind of kino, unfortunately in the sequels they tried to rush through things far too quickly and ignore key historical events and tried to shove in far too much Marxist ideas which did not work with the historical events that truly happened. I found the Hussites inherently fascinating because of how they were complex in their simplicity and morals. Which is far more than I can say about any modern ideology.
>We really cannot understand history if we're just projecting our beliefs unto past people rather than trying to understand their views and beliefs.
Agreed, that's an unfortunate problem with modern history.

This amuses me a lot considering pic related.
>yeah, you're right here, they practically ignore the monarchy in the films after Jan Hus, and they somewhat downplay Zizka et al being noblemen.
Yeah it's unfortunate too. Hell Jan Hus also implies him being a nobleman, but they changed that completely in Jan Zizka. I guess there's not much someone can do about it. It's a shame, the movies were really good overall, but Jan Zizka and Proti Vscem's script is brought down by the Communists forcing in some dialogue to make it pro-commie. Hell even now most Modern Czechs think that Hussites were communists and are commuinist propaganda, which is a shame, because the Hussites represented the Czechs wanting freedom and truth, and now it's been tampered and forced in as the opposite (not saying it was the fault of the Trilogy mind you, communists in general used the Hussites for communist propaganda, so it wasn't just the movie, it was multiple factors, if it was just the movie it could've easily been ignored).
>>896600
>Interestingly enough, they were far more 'rational' or normal, for lack of better words, in their ideology than the likes of the Anabaptists or some of the later radicals of the German and English Reformations.
In a sense, yeah. The Hussites still respected a lot of Catholic traditions, their only request was that they were inherently against the idea of paying the Church and just wanted peasants to have better working and living conditions and that the nobles could help the peasants more personally. Which quite frankly is quite reasonable.

Jan Hus is arguably the best one, as a few others pointed out (>>896391 and the replies afterwards)
one of the biggest flaws is that unfortunately starting from Jan Zizka there starts to be some shoehorned communist propaganda.
In Jan Zizka it's scattered all over the place (since it seems the director was threatened to add it in) whereas with Proti Vscem it's only at the beginning (which is good because Proti Vscem gets interesting because it has more freedom on how it's written, whereas Jan Zizka is kind of restricted on the plot being dependent on if the Czech Commie government could approve of it)

So for me if I had to rate the movies in terms of historical accuracy, story/writing and quality
Jan Hus > Proti Vscem > Jan Zizka
I still recommend watching all of them in chronological order just keep in mind that some of these have some stuff shoehorned in because of the Government at the time and the director being forced to write it in.

Captured on film are mercenary killer squads wiping out entire villages, executions, Mau-Mau massacres and more...

It generally was linked to the idea that the Jews controlled capital, like the Rothschild's, and thus were part of the bourgeois state structure. Traditional peasant social and religious attitudes also contributed.

For concrete examples see the French anarchist Proudhon and the Russian anarchist Bakunin, just off the top of my head, as both wrote things that would be considered 'anti-semitism' today...
>>
>>897123
Yeah but they were speaking from a cultural standpoint not a racial one. It's like saying criticizing Israel is antisemitic.
>>
>>897127
while i agree with your distinction in the abstract, there is nothing that prohibits the cultural and ethnic criticism being one -

Proudhon;

'This whole Jewish world, comprising a single exploiting sect, a kind of blood sucking people, a kind of organic destructive collective parasite, going beyond not only the frontiers of states, but of political opinion, this world is now, at least for the most part, at the disposal of Marx on the one hand, and of Rothschild on the other... This may seem strange. What can there be in common between socialism and a leading bank? The point is that authoritarian socialism, Marxist communism, demands a strong centralisation of the state. And where there is centralisation of the state, there must necessarily be a central bank, and where such a bank exists, the parasitic Jewish nation, speculating with the Labour of the people, will be found.'

Rock Hudson and George Peppard star in the explosive hard-hitting World War II epic Tobruk. Based on a true incident, this exciting drama follows a convoy of British and German-Jewish commandos as they cross 800 miles on Libyan desert to blow up a key Nazi fortress at Tobruk guarded by General Rommel’s best troops. Hudson plays a Canadian officer who is shanghaied into joining the daring raid, while Peppard plays the determined leader of the German-Jewish unit, battling Allied prejudice along with enemy fire. Directed by Arthur Hiller, this suspense-packed adventure against all odds climaxes in one of the most spectacular fiery finales ever to hit the screen.

I don't understand the problem people have with Mega. The downloads are fast, and without worry for seeders. At worst, you have to be patient with the download cap and wait a few hours, or spend 5 dollars.

Man of Aran (1934)

This documentary presents life on Ireland's Aran Islands, a beautiful, rugged, and remote locale where survival was a constant struggle. Featuring scenic shots of seaside cliffs and rocky expanses, the film, which takes a few fictional liberties, shows islanders fishing and farming in inventive ways in order to keep food on their tables. While some dramatic moments reveal a sense of narrative, the main draw of the production is the stunning scenery.

This is a story about the battle for a hospital building in Grozny (Chechnya) in January 1995 between Russian Army forces and Chechen rebels supported by Arabian mujahideen and international mercenaries. Although the story is fictional, most of the characters are based on real-life prototypes and events are the compilation of true events during the Grozny Siege in the First Chechen War.

You mean the Nationalists stopped the Japanese doing...anything? This isn't about the Red Army? Does this come out of Taiwan?
>>
>>903461
No, it was actually made in the PRC. But it does portray Chiang rather poorly, and focuses on Li Zongren who is a figure with a good reputation among the KMT and CPC alike.

I'm well aware but I don't see the relevance your comment has to the movie.
There were still socialists and gommies in the army during that time in China, it's not absurd to think the PRC would make a movie about a well known battle.

In 1898, Spain sends a military squad to the town of Baler, Philippines, to protect one of the last colonies of the Spanish Empire, to avoid rebellious natives from recovering its ancient territories. Lead by Captain Enrique de las Morenas and Lieutenant Cerezo, proud military men, the soldiers are stalked by night by the rebels, and are forced to seek refuge in the church run by Fray Carmelo, Baler's priest. Turning the church into a military fort, the unrelenting heat and malaria starts to sweep across the men.

Based on Leon Uris' novel, this historical epic provides a dramatic backstory to the creation of the state of Israel in 1948, in the aftermath of World War II. Ari Ben Canaan (Paul Newman), a passionate member of the Jewish paramilitary group Haganah, attempts to transport 600 Jewish refugees on a dangerous voyage from Cyprus to Palestine on a ship named the Exodus. He faces obstruction from British forces, who will not grant the ship passage to its destination.

After defeating France and imprisoning Napoleon on Elba, ending two decades of war, Europe is shocked to find Napoleon has escaped and has caused the French Army to defect from the King back to him. The best of the British generals, the Duke of Wellington, beat Napolean's best generals in Spain and Portugal, but has never faced Napoleon. Wellington stands between Napoleon with a makeshift Anglo-Allied army and the Prussians. A Napoleon victory will plunge Europe back into a long term war. An allied victory could bring long term peace to Europe. The two meet at Waterloo where the fate of Europe will be decided.
