FW-qualiy Editian

Guys I'll be late for Terra Sub-edition

Last thread we talked about how to paint minis like candy, speculated about the missing primarchs and explained how the Siege of Terra made sense. Or how teleporters and space battles fuck up our medieval warfare treaties. We also tried to fix champions, but they were killed by snowflakey special characters, which in turn were killed by Scoria, who is sort of good at melee. All of that, and more in the last thread >>51756396

But I advise against making it too gothic. It's not 40k yet.
>>
I need some help on deciding between Raven Guard or Blood Angels. Which has the best models and fluff out of the two? Which has the most fun rules? Which has the coolest colors? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
>>
As a Salamanders player: woud it be worth upgrading my tactical squad sergeant to have a power weapon?

This is keeping in mind that the squad already has the extra CCWs, as I assume that they'll likely be experiencing alot of close range shooting that leads into melee (being salamanders and all). Would a power weapon help, or would I be better to just stick him with the CCW (or even a heavy chain sword?). Chances are I'd likely stick him in artificer armor if I do upgrade. What is my best option?
>>
>>51765936
>But I advise against making it too gothic. It's not 40k yet.

30k was pretty fuckin gothic anon.
>>
>>51766051
Quite gothic? Yes
Overgothic Terran style? Not quite. Especially not in not-yet compliant places, or the ones that were in rebellion.
As you get further away from Terra, the gothic levels begin to decrease.
Sure skulls are ever present, but stuff won't look like the Dark Angel's fucking Cathedrals on wheels (or grav).

Hell, the fucking Custodians themselves look like Sigmarines riding Eldar vehicles with a golden paintjob.
>>
>>51766009
Anon, why don't you better tell us what do you like?
The straightforward Fury of Angels or the planned Ruthlessness of the Ravens?
And even then, there are two flavours of ravens to choose from:
Ashen Clad terran vets and Corax' operators.
The Ravens are one of the legions that changed the most after their primarch's arrival.
>>

Not him, but could you expand upon that? I'm not too familiar with Raven Guard fluff.
>>
>>51766099
The design he's got now isn't very gothic. Gothic is all flying buttresses and then neo-gothic was basically the Baroque era with tons of gold and crazy detailing and shit.

Medieval if anything.

>>
>>51766146
Pre-corax they were a lot closer to the Sons of Horus, i.e. kill em all and let their chosen god sort em out. Post-Corax the terran old guard got banished and became the Space Sharks, and those who adapted became the goody-two-shoes no-civilian-casualties we know and love
>>
>>51766159
>now just to hope that I don't get fucked when BA rules happen
why would you be getting fucked by the BA rules? most of their rules are out, just missing special units and characters
>>
>>51766146
the terrans were much more like night lords, brutal and ruthless with very little restraint, and more importantly very little regard for the people they brought to compliance or what they left behind.

Corax could be similarly ruthless (see atomics use on civilian populations to send a message to the guilders on kiavahr) but he was a surprisingly savvy worldbuilder who understood the temprements and needs of people under governments, and always sought to build something that was relatively fair and would last well politically when he left. ultimately for all the depictions of emo he actually gave a shit, which is part of the reason he had a tendency to brood.

post-corax raven guard was shaped heavily by his views on warfare and attempts to minimize civilian casualties.
>>
>>51766127
Fury of the Angels is more of my taste. I see that the Blood Angels take a lot from the bible. I have been reading their rules and think that a jump infantry force sounds awesome, but at the same time I have a huge hard on for the broken and battered Raven Guard during Isstvan.
>>
>>51766212
>>51766194
it should be added that if you think this means no phosphex and destroyers like salamanders, think again, they're actually very fluffy because when it came to traitors all the gloves came right off. there is a footnote in book 3 somewhere that RG made heavy use of phosphex and destroyers to take traitor ships relatively intact during thier raids on traitor supply lines.

Tarantulas: Drop the cost for base (say 20ppm), but give the option for an upgraded fire control that allows for normal targeting (bs3 or 4, 10-15pts). Additionally allow normal tarantulas to take command platforms. Finally allow the whole battery to be deployed by deep strike at cost, but only in RoW such as orbital assault and similar.

would possibly breathe some life into an underappreciated unit.

-Is the SW 1 HQ per 1,000pts. requirement 1 HQ unit or 1 HQ choice (wording uses both terms)?
-Does a Forge Lord have access to 6 cyberwolves (2 available to all centurions and 4 he replaces his servo-automatas with)?
-Does the Huscarl's "Frost Weapon" option include all the weapons on the Frost Blades list?
-Should the Huscarl have access to his own combi-weapon instead of using the unit's allowance?
-Should Priest of Fenris have access to Fenrisian Wolves?

I also repeated the question I always ask them when sending emails, what Ally status do Daemons have with WB when using Erebus or Layak? Only Kor Phaeron and The Dark Brethren RoW mention the type of ally Daemons are, the other two just say you can take daemons as allies, but I don't know how to treat them as allies.
>>
>>51767701
And your point has to do with other legion using psykers how exactly?
>>
>>51767733
D'uh ! Praetors and Centurions can take up to two Fenrisian Wolves (or Cyberwolves), not Consuls.
The only Consul that can select Wolves is the Forgelord and he can bring up to four Cyberwolves.
Priest of Fenris can't take them.
Yes, the Huscarl can choose any type of Frost Weapon.
No, he doesn't get specified access to a combi-weapon.
The question about the HQ selections is just ... splitting hairs, really.
>>

Predation fleet RG bros and LW would fit in somewhat non standard armour due to all the repairs and scavenging, similar to how the WS pull it off.
>>
>>51767779
>D'uh ! Praetors and Centurions can take up to two Fenrisian Wolves (or Cyberwolves), not Consuls.

Funny, last time I asked do legion options for centurions carry over to consuls, the answer was "duh, yes." So I'm sorry I'm going to the source, rather than trying to achieve a consensus on the internet.

>Priest of Fenris can't take them.

Which is why I'm asking if it's intentional or not.

>No, he doesn't get specified access to a combi-weapon.

Which is why I'm asking if it's intentional or not. I mean, he can take his own power fists and plasma pistols, rather than using the unit's allowance. So why not combi-weapons?

>Yes, the Huscarl can choose any type of Frost Weapon.

Seeing that "frost weapon" isn't even a thing, it's never wrong to ask for clarification on the shitty wording.

>The question about the HQ selections is just ... splitting hairs, really.

How? You do realize that if it's "unit", a praetor with a command squad and a rhino constitutes as 3 HQ units. But if it's "choice" then they constitute a single choice.
>>
>>51767825

I realize that in your example...
- The Praetor would be a HQ unit, and would be using up a HQ slot on the FOC
- The Command Squad would be a HQ unit and would not use up a slot on the FOC
- Their Rhino would be a mere dedicated transport, not a HQ unit.
Also, the character unlocking the Command Squad (Praetor, Delegatus, Herald, Primarch, whatever) and the Command Squad are not a single choice.
>>
>>51767846
>- Their Rhino would be a mere dedicated transport, not a HQ unit.

If you read the rulebook, you'd know that a dedicated transport takes on the role of the unit it was purchased for. So a rhino bought for a tactical squad is considered Troops and one bought for vets is considered Elite.

Wow this looks pretty rad, whats your general favourite pre heresy/primarch scheme for legions?

I love the Luna Wolves white and black, Imperial Heralds (WB), and Warhounds up till now.
Pale Nomads (Rg) are ok, but a it to similar to their ordinary one.

I do not know why, but I really like how clunky MKII and MKIII look. Something a lot less refined than later patterns and thus more fitting the whole tech barbarian theme , scavenging old awesome tech and making it work.

Probably also the reason I love the mechanicum, clunky byzantine stuff.

Is there a consensus on the usefulness of the Vigilator ? I'm building up an Ironwing army (easier thanks to my collection of 40k tanks) and I'm considering including one since I always liked sneaky sniper characters and could use his sabotage to try and get some wounds on his Devastators or other anti-tank infantry before the game starts.

personally i love them, as an AL player, but they are far from the most competative choice. The ablity to throw around rapid fire rending blasts is also pretty fun, and having a HQ who actaully uses a range weapon is nice.

His saboutarge is very mediocre: its D6 boltgun hits.

Command Squad rules says they can only be taken with a Praetor or a Legion special character with the Warlord special rule. And Delegatus rules say he can take a Command Squad as well.

What would you cut in order to do so? That's 60 points to put in sky hunters vs outriders, but skyhunters don't have access to power swords. Another 20 for centurion jetbike, which is the most valid criticism even though the command squad is there to absorb wounds for him with 3+ jink with skilled rider. Cutting another plasma canon bike would let me do that and have a few points to spare. Making them multi melta jetbikes vs plasma would make them cheaper, but then I'm giving up 36" range. Are they still useful that way? Am I better off getting rid of the command squad entirely in favor of more sky hunters, foregoing assault entirely? I could probably live with that.

If I do that I might also drop the Primus in favor of getting regular bike apothecaries.

I got about 20 of both assault and tactical marines, 10 tartaros terminators and a Contemptor (Who I'm converting into a cortus). And 10 Mk IIIs who I'm thinking of using as Heavies.

I'm planing on making use of the Long march rite and getting drop pods for termies and dreadnought along with auto cannons for the heavy support. What else would be a good investment for a assault heavy army with some presence to defend the backfield/support the tactics as they move up?

Oh cool, I've read Path to Heaven some time ago but forgot that part. Currently reading Scars and will re-read Path after that, fantastic books.
>>
>>51770022

Presuming that we get another box at all, the established pattern would make it seem far more likely that they'd provide three sets of a 10 man tactical squad in whatever armour mark they're doing (II would seem most likely), rather than having two different marks of tactical squad. Got to save something for future boxes after all, rather than just spaffing it all in one. The real question is what else they'll include. They've done both types of terminator armour after all, so something will have to replace that, and there's the question of the contemptor/custodes element.

I think the breachers boat has sailed, what with them having produced MkIII in plastic already. Best you can hope for on that front is a resin upgrade set from FW, I think. Tanks of any sort seem a deeply unlikely inclusion for a boxed board game. I don't doubt that plenty of people would like plastic dickbikes, but I think that's going to have to wait for when WS come out rather than accompanying BA and DA in Angelus. It's partially wishlisting, but I think that assault marines are the best bet. If GW had an ounce of sense then they could do a combination kit which could include 5 marines in a mark of armour, jump packs as well as normal backpacks, and close combat options as well as bolters (a bit like the death company box). Might be a better option than winding up with tactical squads in all six different marks.

I've realised a Primus Medicae is really only good to take to attach to terminators since normal apothecaries can't, and for taking a refractor field. Giving the Delegatus a jetbike requires giving the command squad the same, but dropping the Medicae for a regular bike apothecary let's me fit that in and have a big ol' ball of heavy bolters and 2+.

>>51770444
Also a good point, and I'll be wanting to move enough that getting close is fine and hit and run lets me escape if assaulted. Changing them to multi melta gives me the 30 points needed to make the outriders sky slayers with 2 culverins each. I only have one choppy unit, but they have heavy bolters so they're fine shooting and if they get caught in assault, I have power weapons and hit and run to get out of combat and charge back in on my turn to teach the enemy the error of their ways.

This is why I come here, you guys are great.

Hey HHG! I'm wanting to build a more or less (less probably) fluffy Dark Mechanicum army using the Legiold Cybernetica and going with a necron-esque vibe. I'm basing the necron part off the pic of Scoria where if you look closely you can see a tiny necron scarab perched on him.

Anyway, I'm torn between using a 40k Dominus model and building anew Abeyant for him out of a cantopik bits OR using Cawl and converting the legs with, you guessed it, more necron legs.

Thoughts? I'm literally split 50/50 on which way to go with him. My thallax and Castellax are pretty much stock but I used destroyer gauss Cannons for the thallax lightning guns and another necron gun I can't recall at the moment for Darkstar Cannons. I can try to take pics of my WIP later...

The Mk II jump packs are awful for this. Every single one has 4 mould lines in the same places around the pack, and they aren't terribly easy to get out. I've done 40 of them. I hate it. Thankfully 40 is all I should ever need

the eye of horus, for example, is a blatant reference to the battle standard of Thulsa Doom

I still think for the SoH that Fist of the North Star in space sums them up

But the Luna Wolves aren't though, they may have some barbaric elements, but they also share Roman aspects as well
>>
>>51771012
Also the "final" army will have 2 full blobs of tacs, a 10-man heavy support squad, 5 more grave wardens, a second boxnaut and 10 tartaros termies. I don't know if I have enough room to take a group photo of them once they're done. I'm also thinking of adding a full vindicator squadron.

Too good at too many things. Very few primarchs have 6 attacks (with gear) and those that do tend to be primarily beatsticks. Your guy is a shitckicker in melee (fleshbane AP1 is crazy), has a good gun (most primarchs don't) AND gives his army powerful buffs. It's too much.

So how many points is it customary to spend on an Archmagos or his subsidiary Magi?

I like giving all the small fry a Machinator Array, since it does a stupid number of things for the 25 points, gives a nice couple guns, massively improved anti-tank, T boost and better repair, but that's all they get.

For the Archmagos, he tends to get really expensive.
Archimandrite, Machinator, Abeyant, familliar, Djinskein and all 4 Occularis and a couple decent weapons like a chainfist and Photon Thruster comes to 350-odd points.
Is that too much? Quite a lot of that is support abilities for the whole army that aren't really tied to him, so that ameliorates it a bit.
>>
>>51769904
>>51769966
Yeah, also wheee the UM are more about soldiering and the bihher organisation..the SoH are about individual warriors initiative and actions and seizing opportunities with this.

It would sound cool to say that where UMs as the other big can do all legion loses conecction to high command they becomepuzzled and defensive for a moment, the SoH jumps over the fence with his pals and hits you in the bunghole.

Its a lot, but it depends on what you want to do:

mine is 200 (Arch-Magos,ordinator,MC photon thruster) and he has one specific job: kill tanks.
350 points is primarch level, and unless you are going to get primarch teir buffs out of him, hes not worth it

Contemptors aren't full heads, they're cut horizontally in the middle like cataphractii.

Also primarchs heads aren't bigger than normal marine heads. Whether thats because marines have big heads ot primarchs have small, or both, I dont know. Some are slightly slack-jawed to give the appearance that they are larger.

He's def. Primarch tier, if not the same in a fight. Throws out 4 Interceptor-granting, cover-screwing Nuncio-Voxes that can be individually controlled and move fast, grants every vehicle IWND, boosts reserves by 1 and has a cognis-signum and his own nuncio-vox. Also the usual archmagos punchy abilities, since he's hanging out with some Myrmidons. He can't fight Primarchs, but IMO he buffs about as well as Ferrus Manus, and is 100 points under him for some improved combat skills and EW, and is also not a LoW.

He's certainly superior to the Custodes Tribune, even if he's not as tough.

Do Cyber-Occularis grant victory points for being popped? I can't find anything about it in the army list.

Can any IH anons justify Medusan Immortals to me?

Mathhammer wise a base breacher squad with an apothecary is cheaper, however immortals cost -3ppm, but that won't matter unless you get 12 or more guys.

The weapon options are the same except for immortals being able to switch bolters for chainswords (literally pointless since they have boarding shields) and immortals can all take volkite chargers, which is ok but probably not worth 5pts. For me at least, the benefit is dropping a PF sarge to gib characters- trades are pretty common against anything short of a praetor- and maybe getting some meltaguns to surprise buttsex rhinos, but none of this is improved by immortals.

Am I missing something, cause right now breacher honestly look like the better option.
>>
>>51772110

Yeah, that's what I figured. I picked up 10 immortals for testing in ZM, amdthey look like an okay option.

20 of these guys going with a praetor and chaplain in a spartan would hurt like a bitch, but the big draw is that 2-300 points of them could always be better spent elsewhere. Though I've yet to really get a test in, I'm guessing they're suboptimal but useful for tarpits.

TSons are potentially broken, but obviously it depends on what you take. Magnus and Sekhmets are undercosted. If you want invisibility you can pretty much make sure you get it, and that can be a big deal. I'd like to think we're better than that.
>>
>>51772078
Most of them are fine, allowing them to be decently strong and fluffy. Magnus is broken, Sekhmets are too strong and versatile for their price and they have RoW that allows them to field nothing but those two while also buffing them even more.
>>
>>51772078
Yes, because people are finally understanding how bad is to have army-wide pinning or losing -1 Ld permanently.

Throwing 2 dice at it gives you 8/9 to manifest power, followed by 5/6 to strip a hull point.

If you have three or four squads of Sekhmets, you can disappear annoying shit that won't go down to plasma.
>>
>>51772903
>If you have three or four squads of Sekhmets
>just throw 765 or 1,020 points at getting 3 or 4 potential haywire hits
Grav rapiers exist if you want haywire. Otherwise take Maelstrom or Molten Beam.
>>
>>51772973
Are you retarded? You get Skehmets for bunch of stuff. Haywire helps them deal with AV14/Flyers, which is their weaknesses.

Maeltorm is better against troops while Molten Beam requires five dice for lower chance of manifesting, greater chance of getting perils and overall same average damage as single Haywire hit because everything rocks Ceramite.

Derailing conversation slightly, but can we get a moment to appreciate FW's customer service? Got an order yesterday that had clearly been mishandled by UPS, box was fucked and the stuff inside took a hell of a beating, one email with some photos to FW later and everything that didn't survive is getting straight replaced.

At least I might be able to make a cool crashed fire raptor terrain piece out of the remains of the smashed-up one.
>>
>>51773029
>Are you retarded?
>says the person willing to pay 1k points for haywire
Of course you take sekhemet for all the good stuff about them. But haywire is a waste of a power when you could take S10 AP1 barrage blasts for ignoring flare shields or 12" S8 AP1 beams for taking on vehicles. Plus those powers would murder anything else.

Objuration isn't a bad power if you get landed with it, but you can choose Molten Beam or Maelstrom which will do significantly more damage.

If you want haywire specifically dont waste sekhemet on it, but grav rapiers.
>>
>>51773111
Or, instead of spending points on grav rapiers, you get OM and just nuke that Spartan into the ground.

You can get three Haywire spells for single Molten Beam for god's sake. Each has 75% to strip a hull point with two dice, and you don't need to pray that low two 5s in a row. It's hilariously efficient if you have multiple squads of Sekhmets around.

And if enemy doesn't have Spartan/some Flyer, you just get other spells because you don't care. Entire point of this is that even shit that should counter them, won't.
>>
>>51772883

In the Legions book, sure.
It's written differently in the Mechanicum book, where it is a lot more permissive as Mechanicum has more toys. You can literally take any Imperial flyer from anywhere, since it doesn't even refer to the box that says it can't have a Heresy counterpart.
>>
>>51773538
>Mechanicum book
Yeah, I guess. Personally I'd be cautious about spending money on a vulture for my 30k army in case they bring the rules in line with the legion book when they update the mechanicum red book (we know it's out of date because of the knights list).

To be clear, that is the reason I'm disagreeing - it's not to rain on peoples' parades or be a no-fun killjoy, it's just caution about spending money on expensive resin options that may disappear.
>>
>>51773392

Also, that would be a massive dick move and I detest Drop Pods as a mechanic, but it's a legal move as per the rules.
>>
