You Americans have it too easy. Do you know that now, since GW started copyrighting every single thing in their books, they're now unreadable? Everything is in your language, fragmented every 3 words by a random name in English. Reading them is now a pain in the ass

Hey all,

I haven't played 40k regularly since 3rd edition - I am building an IG army and don't know what weapons and equipment are still viable in this edition.

Can anyone give a basic run-down of what special/heavy weapons and equipment are generally good to have for guardsmen/scions/ogryns/Heavy weapons teams?

I will eventually get extra models with all the extra weapons and equipment so that I can field anything, but right now I don't have that option.

Wow, I thought I was a grog because I started playing at age 10 in '99... you're a true grog.

Do you feel that the WAAC attitude has poisoned the game in recent years? Maybe it was because the guys at the FLGS were nice to a 10 year old boy and took it easy on me, but I feel like fun and a laidback approach to the game were more common pre-2004. Nowadays it feels like people are so obsessed with winning and fielding these bullshit min-maxed armies that the environment of a FLGS has changed.

Is it rose-tinted goggles or am I on to something?

Don't worry, your codex is coming soon, think of it as an Xmas present from GW. This also means that vortex missiles don't run out, you can just spam them every turn.

>>54375977
Not every unit that might consider assaulting a tank has the means to reliably charge from over 8", and even if they can indeed make that charge, the presence of the flamers can force more disadvantageous distances.

>>
>>54376012
The think is 7" is not hard to do.
Since melee is within 1" you just need to roll an 8 to make that 9 charge.

With how easy it is to get re-roll flamers on overwatch are hardly worth it for the price.
>>
>>54376022
> Using mining weapons
but why though?
>>
>>54375977

Speaking of Overwatch shenanigans
Tau will probably get a nice and nasty Overwatch rule for a <Sept>. Maybe something simple like hit on 5+ or something more complex like Overwatch range manipulation letting them maybe Overwatch stuff with flamers if a charge passes within 8'' of the flamers even if they started over 8'' away.
That might be fun, setting up a hallway of flamers, I want to burn everything.
>>
>>54375950
The bigger issue is simply that it's so much easier to learn what's broken and copy a list to play.
Tournaments lauding their top rankers with lists that are god awful or youtube videos with said tourney fags effectively masturbating to their broken lists do the community at large 0 good.
This was especially bad in 6th and more so in 7th edition. Thankfully it seems like 8th is less awful in this case, but the tourney fags are already spamming fliers and other shit.

There are lots of good groups of people around. We would take in friendly like minded people in a heartbeat. Checks local groups on Facebook and network, because yes the environment in most game shops has become toxic.

My heavy support slots are full. Besides if I take 2 units of 3 lascannons for fliers its 2 shots more than a vengeance, but has less range, and less durable. Plus they'd most likely be going into tanks anyways.

But yeah ok, you Sherlock's caught me. A good pair of trainers will be like $100 and you can do the entire AT with them.

40k is a fucking expensive hobby. Stop rationalizing it.

>Is there any difference between different marines beside colours and random bits glue to them?

They get different rules and fluff, and one of them is just empty armor filled with dust, but other than that? No. They're all marines, why would you think they're fundamentally different. Sort of like how a black human and a white human wouldn't be any different in a wargame featuring aliens and humans.
>>
>>54376308
Nah m8, you're just a poorfag LARPing as being rich. Dropping $40 a week on a new kit and some hobbying bits is easy to afford with my $40k (kek) salary and is totally reasonable. And despite gaming a lot myself, considering video games a real, social hobby is incredibly sad

There are tons of third party plasma guns all over the internet from various aftermarket bits retailers too. Not sure which is the best way to get them though. You might also consider getting one pack and casting your own, the youtube tutorials out there make it look really easy.

Also for Death Guard consider combi-plasmas instead.

I have a ryzen1700x system with a 970. I played LoL because it was good and I don't have to rationalize it to people playing 40k, a game that just left two editions as the worst tabletop franchise in the industry.

Also, a 2000 point 40k army with paints, transport gear, and other accessories is way more expensive than a modest diy desktop + 1080p monitor and the computer is 10x as useful.

My LGS is a licensed GW store, so that might be why.

OR the guy is fucking desperate to hit his tore targets, since GW stores in the UK (might apply to other territories but I can't be certain) are targeted for business growth. If I go in there to grab a couple of paints he always asks how my armies are going and I say "Yeah fine" he says "If you need any models just call me and I will put them aside for you!" which basically means "please don't shop on Gamesworkshop.co.uk!"

Here's a 2k list I'm working on. I wanted to do a Batt that's just marines, with other stuff added on as a supporting detachment.

Battalion detachment

HQ:
Captain with relic blade
Chaplain

Troops:
10 tac marines with combi flamer, plasmagun, heavy bolter
10 tac marines with plasmagun, plasma cannon
5 scouts with sniper rifles

Elites:
Apothecary
5 cataphractii terminators with a heavy flamer, some chainfists and lightning claws
Contemptor dread with Kheres

Heavy support:
Predator with TL lascannon, heavy bolters, storm bolter

Dedicated transport:
Razorback with TL assault cannon, storm bolter

Flyer:
Stormraven with TL assault cannon, TL multimelta, hurricane bolters

Vanguard detachment:
HQ:
Guard commander with power axe and plasma pistol

Troops:
Guard infantry squad with heavy bolter, flamer, boltgun

Elites:
Guard command squad with 4 grenade launchers
Special weapon squad with demo charge and 2 flamers
Astropath with laspistol
Culexus assassin

Dedicated transport:
Chimera with heavy bolter, multilaser, storm bolter

The tac squad with the flamer is usually going to be combat squadded with the combi flamer and plasmagun in the razorback, but it depends. Thats just your manager being a thirsty cunt, my geedubs manager just asks you once and when youre done buying, he honestly doesnt care about anything else, Ive even seen a dude bring a full rogue trade marine army.

Smart managers care about having a fun looking shop so new customers can be enticed into buying stuff the moment they drop in.

Try not to give in so much to advertising.

Alright, I think I'll be going with this list. I've never played 8th yet, how well do you think I'll do? I think I covered all my bases. Got a bit of anti-tank/monster, anti-horde and some anti-elite sprinkled in. Grabbing objectives might be my biggest problem I think.

Am I the only person who thinks this guy put a cut TOO much tattoos on his stuff? Making them blinding white doesn't help either.

Not knocking his work, just that it seems a heck of a lot like the stuff GW makes for SW that gets a lot of complaints, rather than the more subtle FW style. Sometimes less is more.

I probably shouldn't say anything though because his stuff is way better than mine and he even got the BL author to use his shit as the basis of the novel.

started in 91, age 18. some of the comments by the younger folks make me genuinely laugh. for example the supposed dumbing down by 8th. it's nothing compared to what 3rd was, people forget. plus 8th brought back a number of RT mechanics like save modifiers, individual point values, move characteristic.

so, yeah, 8th is pretty awesome so far. it's pretty much grognard edition.

I wouldn't say Melta sucks, but with the current Horde meta plasma is definitely stronger.
Not to mention with the new rules for strength vs. toughness, Plasmaguns are more reliable due to their higher RoF. Meltas wounding tanks on 3/4+ is rough.

>>
>>54377700
Gravcannon is too low of a strength and short ranged. I fight a lot of tyranids and a gravcannon isn't going to do shit to an MC, but an overcharged plasma with rerolls will.

You're probably right about the snipers. I have another version of this list that has a vindicare instead of the culexus, but I want to try a culexus out to shut down broodlords and such with.

Also, my thought is that with the culexus I'm going to be hitting a broodlord with the animus every time I get a chance, so 5 snipers will be able to finish it off. If I'm fighting then even 5 snipers is enough to start whittling down characters.

No they aren't. Vanguard Veterans can take power weapons to go tank/HQ hunting, Reivers sit around with their thumbs up their asses while their knives uselessly bounce off anything with a 2+ save.

Pick one unit and shoot them to death.

>>54379689

Yeah, Shoota Boyz are a bit of a problem. However, a full unit of Shoota Boyz is still only doing 3.2 wounds per turn to a Raider, and only 1.6 if they advance. Stay in those flying metal boxes and you should be okay.
