Hello /tg/

I've been playing a few casual games with my friends at low points levels (500/750/1000) but I'm hoping to start working my way towards 1500 and 2000 points at a more competitive level.

I know this isn't the best list in Christendom but any advice/points would be great!

General idea is use the Purgation squad to shoot the LRC up the field, drop in the NDK and kick some ass.

I think the major thing is clarification of things they only wrote a short amount and would assume would be simple. Forgetting people around the world have various interpretation of written words.

But the game itself is still far superior to 5th, 6th and especially 7th. Not had this much fun since 3rd edition quite frankly.
>>
>>55367559
I think its a strong foundation that GW can quickly chamge or add to with minimal effort. My hope is that the Co continues in this direction and slowly adds tactical choices while correcting rules/units based on player feedback.

I think a lot of useful information resulted from Nova (character spam, conscripts and IG points, chaos shit, etc)

I don't view what I want as harmful rules bloat.

In 7th edition, the main rulebook had a large special rules section. In addition to this special rules section, some special rules were inexplicably left out of it, and included in sections related to them. Units would often reference special rules from other codexes, or the same codex. The net effect was that when I had to figure out how one unit would interact with another, I was often flipping through 3-5 pdfs, or 2 to 3 spots in the same pdf. It was annoying as fuck.

8th has fixed that. It's better organized. Rules are often just reprinted in full on the unit card without taking up all that much space. If a special rule is referenced and not reprinted, it's something extremely generic, or simple and unique to the faction, so you know where it is or you already memorized how it works.

If you want to know how to units interact, you often only need to look at the two unit entries, instead of 3-5 pdfs. 8th edition is amazing compared to 7th in that respect. And adding more unique rules wouldn't change that. Because you would just reprint the unique rules in full on the unit cards. It may bloat things, by making the unit cards take up more space. I can't argue against that. But that isn't a bad kind of bloat.

>>55367597
Yes, I do hope they clarify some strange things when the release the codex for a faction, or rerelease the indexes. I've seen a lot of issues with movement and abilities that replace it.

Necron, the reason I love my Necron is because of how cold and calculated they can be while trying to achieve their goals while holding a very strict and methodical hierarchy.

They're incredibly pleasing aesthetically to boot, hundreds of thousands of living metal clad skeletons marching perfectly in order to destroy their enemy through direct and perfect strategies as created by their insanely amazing technology and calculated leader.

I apologize for the sperg out but I really love my Crons'.

I do have Dark Angels, again its the very strict hierarchical structure of their brotherhood and steeped in honour and tradition of the great knights of Caliban.

Recently picked up me some Deathwatch and I'm drawn to them because of how unique they come off as without being overpoweringly Mary Sue for my tastes.

Anyway thats my show and tell Anon.

I will probably still take the Omnispex honestly. More consistent, and I'll probably be applying that strat to Dunecrawlers anyway for accurate neutron lasers. Still, I can see ATSKNF, faster BS2+ Skitarii being actually decent troops rather than just being good for screening.

The bonus from the tether is situational as with +1 to hit you are naturally hitting on 2s anyway Although I guess you could have a Metallica unit fall back from combat and open up at max BS (Or just use Graia and do the same thing for cheaper but also get to attack in melee.)

I know it's inevitable there would be some overlap with the simplified system they are doing now but I'm still pissed that the 6+ FNP is limited to a specific forgeworld now to be replaced with a pretty useless 6++

>So tell me, what exactly the fuck do you want? It has to be on the scale of existing things, it has to be balanced, and it has to be useful.

I told you exactly what I want. I want unique faction traits and stratagems. I don't want every codex to have a faction that gets to shoot twice in a turn for command points, or fight twice in a turn for command points. I don't want every faction to have the sneaky gits who are hard to hit from a distance. etc, etc. We're getting into league of legends tier sameness. And that is bad, because it is boring. I don't play games to be bored. I don't play 40k to mash largely similar armies into each other.

Why so defensive anyways?
>>
>>55368112
You could always give it to an Enginseer seeing as you'll usually have a couple along to fill HQ slots. Model one as an Electropriest leader and make actual mecha-Saitama. Or just have him fluffed as "Especially proficient at the Rite of Percussive Maintenance".

>>55368298

Maybe we'll get some Strider buffs. Personally I quite like my two Dragoons, and running around with -1 or -2 To Hit would make them properly annoying for shooty armies. Tau get to snapshot at them before they start shoving Fire Warrior squads about and pestering non-Fly stuff.

>>55368391
No. I want every faction to get unique bonuses. I don't care if I end up on the low powered or high powered end of that, so long as my army feels and plays uniquely.

Renegades had the their unique bonuses for formations and characters. Holy shit the fun things you could do with renegades. It's FW, but it's indicative of the direction that GW has taken since 8th.

Daemons had the warp storm, and each daemon faction could play wildly different from each other with quite a few options. The masque of slaanesh had 3 debuffs to choose from, which were all unique. Now it has a -1 penalty or something, and that's it.

Dark Eldar had two different power from pain tables you could choose from, which could be used to really distinguish your army. You could even build a leadership debuffing army and have it be competitive and fluffy and fun.
>>
>>55368430
I agree that more unique bonuses is more interesting. But it's important to understand that even some similar bonuses can change quite a bit in different army contexts. Any trait that affects certain classes of weapon can change a lot depending on what types of weapons that army use and where. I don't think GW needs to always be different for the sake of being different. That said I think the Mars and Graia traits do a better job than the Metalica one. There's a kernel of an interesting army style in there between the forge world and Warlord trait, but I don't think it effects enough of the army to really pay off.

You dont know what its like having a "unique" codex and have it be so fucking useless that you cant even win in casual games, so fuck that shit and bring on the "bland" rules as long as the army remains largely viable.

Not the guy complaining about no unique rules, but R&H has basically lost all its appeal as a faction without demagogue devotions.

It used to be "build your own chaos worshipping force however you want, and rules to reflect that", now it's cheaper but less reliable guard that can ally with chaos.

The only reason to take it is to have artillery in a chaos force.

This anon makes a valid point with the army context. If I get a +6fnp. For leviathan because they use massive swarms, it looks unoriginal and even not that competitive but paired with large units of gaunts it becomes awesome, makes you lean towards troop heavy lists which would be fluffy for the fleet and a different feel from other fleets such as kraken which might favour cults or ambush or who knows.

Traits can easily feel repetitive if taken from a sterile point of view

So I made a list that I think is nigh-unbeatable in the tourney scene for Orks.

If not unbeatable I can pretty much guarantee a top spot, it's just too goddamn fast with too many bodies. Sure I couldn't do much to armor, but if they don't have any infantry to sit on objectives they weren't gonna win anyways.

and yes I am currently modeling this list, god help me. At least I already owned enough boys to convert.
>>
>>55368721
Right now R&H has 3 things going for it, none of them exciting.

1. Malefic Lords are the most efficient smite spammers in the game. Did you think 8th edition fixed the psychic phase? It didn't.
2. Valkeries for chaos. Sure, you can only take renegade units with them, but that means you can stuff chaos characters in them, which lets you summon daemons very fast.
3. As you said, artillery in chaos. Maybe snipers too.
>>
>>55368582

I'm more a fan of the Warp Cults and Imperial Militia rules from 30k, which are similar in spirit but have even more strange choices. Well, all of them are still very low-powered, and they get torn apart by Marines and... everything else.

R&H and WC&IM might be better if there were some minis for them, or if they could compete with each other. As it stands, it's likely they might only be able to compete against each other in some kind of Path/Realm of Chaos campaign.

yes. deep strike and the warp time (because they're HERETIC ASTARTES units) and then charge. A 10 man unit with flails is cheap and deadly as fuck.

One of the major criticisms of 7th reasons for 8th was the bloated special rules in army constructions. Piles and piles of supplement books and white dwarfs with formations and one off rules that people showed of with via printouts of photocopies off the internet. 8th is designed to give you flexibility in list construction, but it's done via a core set of detachments that everyone is familiar with but still let you take pretty much whatever you want rather than piecing together bespoke decisions and formations. Codex rules offer rules to costomize your force but their centralized in the codex so you and your opponent can have a better idea of what each force can and can't do. There is also more of an emphasis on choosing options during play via Stratagems rather than having everything dictated by army construction.

I mean I get it, from your perspective more is better always, period. But there's a real design cost in added complexity for very little practical game benefit. Perhaps they make army construction more interesting in a D&D splatbook and 3.5 prestige classes sense. But they don't really add much in terms of actual play certainly not compared to what Stratagems offer. And it's not like customized armies are totally gone. Each major force has seven-ish sub-factions with a factions trait, Stratagems, Warlord trait and relic that is at least unique within that faction. Far more than most armies have ever seen before. And people meme that I are the same as IF or AL is the same as RG, but they aren't the different units available to these force change how you and what you can use those rules for. And the difference will be enven more pronounced if you aren't comparing two MEQ forces.

Just reading some fluff from the 8E space marine codex. 'virtually immune to battlecannons'. In reality battle cannons wound a land raider on a 50/50 chance and the land raider only gets a 50/50 chance to save it, one battle cannon shot can *potentially* kill a land raider in one shot, thanks to d6 shots doing d3 damage each. Even lasguns can wound land raiders now :(.

Anyone else sad land raiders are basically paper now? Not to mention their role as safe transports has become obsolete thanks to easy safe deep Striking and and them being charged by 5 grots or random rhino stops them shooting for an entire turn..

Plagueburst cralwer is a mystery to me. Its basically a Leman Russ BT, which are quite shit in and of themselves, but its got a few notable bonuses.

1. its much cheaper. Its 50 points or so cheaper than its LMBT equivalent with very similar wargear.

2. Its much tougher, its almost as tough as a Land Raider. 12 wounds with Disgustingly Resillient should amount to 16, same as LR. And it has a 5+ invuln, which should help it stop certain -ap weapons from hurting it too much. I'd argue that the LRs 2+ is better than a 3+ and a 5++ though.

he's probably talking about the mirror of minds/mask of secrets/armor of agony/grotesquerie leadership bomb. you'd deepstrike a squad containing a full unit of grotesques, a haemonculus, a archon with a ww portal and a ML2 spiritseer, then the haemonculus would be equipped with a archangel of pain against tau/guard and naked otherwise. you'd have the ML2 spiritseer use mirror of minds and if the spell cast wasn't denied you could pretty much kill any model in the game instantaniously with no saves of any kind allowed because it's spells where built on dealing damage based on leadership and your necron opponent is sitting on leadership five which means its actually impossible for him to not die to mirror of minds, I used the tactic several times to vaporise storm-surges and wraithknights, it was about 500 points of deathstar though for a unit which had the gimmick of oneshotting any model in the game so long as it had a leadership value

Well over a thousand.

72 hits for a wound, 16 wounds. Makes over 1100 before you account for ballistic skill or shots per model, which vary depending on range and army composition.

In short, it's a non-issue. Anyone trying to kill a Land Raider with lasguns is either desperate, stupid, or both.

Yeah I've played a lot of 8th now with and against various armies and something just feels 'off' about it. The hilariously absent LOS and cover rules certainly don't help. Though I think mostly its because every army and unit is just kinda homogenised into a bland mass and tactics boil down to pushing your models towards your opponents and rolling dice until someone wins.

Its actually a bit like playing pachinko or 2nd edition talisman also a gw game, fun, but pointless, random and brainless.

It would take 288 Guardsmen* (1152pts)
Or 432 Conscripts (1296pts)

1152 of them, so yeah, i would say it's durable.
>>
>>55369239
Which means in previous editions land raiders were literally infinitely more durable than they are now to all small arms fire up to an autocannon .

Consider one conscript squad can fire 250 shots a turn and 1100 doesn't seem like that much. Just 4 and a bit squads shooting. This isn't to mention that small arms can just chip off a few wounds while other weapons , such as battlecannons', which would have been ill equipped before now do the job easily and you realise land raiders are a 356 point + joke.

Alright "more is almost always better" then. I mean I still think the issue is the stuff you're talking about is still.more in the realm of making list building more interesting rather than making actual play more interesting. That stuff has real design costs, in terms of complexity to new players, to tournament organizers, to your opponents. I get that you think "it wouldn't be too bad", but when people say 7th Ed. was buried under bloat those are the kind of things they mean. Sure you don't think YOUR special rule that your intimately familiar with is an issue, but when you add all those "not too bad" things up across 20+ factions is starts to become a problem for a lot of people. Plus 7th Ed. Is the culmination of nearly two decades of creeping complexity in the 3rd Ed. Ruleset. I don't think we need the 8th Ed. Rules to jump to that point immediately.

Or if you mean crunch-wise, he can duel mid-tier characters and hand out situational buffs for a premium of points that could be spent on yet another quadfusion Commander instead.

>>
>>55369252
No, you'd need an entire armies' worth.

Assuming 1200 for easy of math, you'd need 2400 shots at Guardsman BS of 4+, which at rapid fire with orders makes 600 guardsmen.

I'm not sure but I don't believe this is physically possible to fit within a 12" bubble around a Land Raider in the first place, so you'd actually need even more.

Possibly the 666 men (the maximum you can fit in a deployment zone) of an all conscript army couldn't do it in one turn, even with perfect positioning and zero casualties.

Now strictly speaking this is a greater chance of being killed than in 7e, where lasguns couldn't damage a LR AT ALL. But it's a fools' argument.

>>55369296
>Just 4 and a bit squads shooting
That's 4 platoons, anon. 200 men. 200 models. All within 12" of the target.

Do us all a favor, actually run a Land Raider and see how it performs. Your mathhammer is bad and you should feel bad.
>>
>>55369246
No, and neither do I. The things I'm talking about, such as additional stratagems, more varied legion traits, etc, would not jump us up anywhere near 7th edition's complexity. 7th edition was complex as fuck because the base game was complex as fuck. 8th edition has a much simpler system, so there's a lot more room to add complexity with unique rules without getting to the point where any given battle state is impossible to comprehend without having 10 bookmarks across 5 pdfs.

Maybe I just have a higher estimation of the average warhammer player. I don't think anyone's mind would be blown, rendered unable to play the game due to sheer eldritch complexity, if Iron Warriors got something more flavorful than ignores cover, and 2 more stratagems. I don't think that would be the case if every subfaction got it. I don't think that would be the case if every army didn't get the same unit specific buffs like rerolling 1s in combat.

I don't even necessarily want things to happen immediately. But if you look at the codexes we've gotten, there have been no major changes to the units to make them more interesting and more diverse from their index state. Special rules are being copy/pasted (and slightly but not majorly) modified all over the place. It's a disturbing trend.

Fair enough, I honestly agree that many of the Trait choices have been constervative so far. Still there are real meaningful differences that can profoundly effect army construction. The White Scars = Jump Packs, Ultramarines = Bikes, Raven Guard = Shooty thing isn't just a meme. It's actually true. However, pining for the "good old days" of 7th Ed. special rules does you no favors. And is why there's such a negative reaction.

>But if you look at the codexes we've gotten, there have been no major changes to the units to make them more interesting and more diverse from their index state.
This is however is a case where I think you are completely off base. The Indexes were remarkably feature complete compared to Ravening Hordes or previous "get you by" lists. If they were changing many data sheet I'd argue that was an indication they had fucked up. There are very few units that need any kind of Datasheet overhaul and GW will do that in places where it is appropriate, like Plague Marines.

Nope. That's correct. I think It works fine for most options but is pretty retarded for Rubrics unfortunately.

I'm actually planning on getting a box of these, a box of Dethshroud and a box of Deathwing Knights for some cool conversions.

I wish I was able to find stronger magnets at this size
I guess I'll just try it on one, if it does nothing I only waste 2

Be sure to report results. Though I'm sure >science could already tell us the answers.

If you only have a single point of contact you might consider pinning instead. Especially in infantry models.
>>
>>55368968
They may lose access to the Dark Hereticus discipline, we'll have to wait and see.
>>
>>55369771
I was able to find really small (5x1mm) magnets with 250g strength, which should be plenty. And no, you won't get more strength by putting two magnets on top of eachother. You might could get better strength with two magnets side by side, but it'd depend on where the other two magnets are attached to the arm or whatever.
>>
>>55369779
Should be fine. Personally I prefer to use plastic-bodied ones of those because it's less heavy, but NBD. Just change the blades rather regularly to keep them sharp, it's much easier if you plan on converting anything to be able to easily remove details. Shouldn't be a problem with basic Tau, though.

I actually need a new knife because the last one jammed, so I've been on one blade for about three boxes of models. Bit of a pain.

You can take an allied Hereticus Sorc from CSM and have him cast Warp Time in the Blightlords. They're still a Heretic Astartes unit.
>>
Are daemon troops (specifically bloodletters) worth using for CSM as tax troops?
>>
>>55369870
And you'll lose your chapter tactics for it.
>>
>>55369889
Not if the Sorc is in a different detachment. Come on, this is list building 101 at this point.

One easy example of what I mean would be differentiating the deep strike rules with numbers tweaks.

So far, with very few exceptions, deep strike is 9 inches away from any enemies. Tau and Nids are the only exceptions I can think of off the top of my head. Why not let some armies benefit from easier charges after deep strike? Change their rules to 7 or 8 inches away. Make it harder for other armies. Change their rules to 10 or 11 inches away. This would be an easy way to differentiate armies more, and make the game feel less samey.

There are larger issues. with the index, and the above is just a simple example of one step (out of many) that could be taken with the codexes to help make 8th feel better.

>>55369879
If you take them in a CSM detachment you lose legion traits, stratagems and all the other good stuff so no.
>>
>>55369859
Made a gang of cyber-occularis for Heresy games from greenstuff and Kataphron parts. Otherwise my spares tend to go into jazzing up existing models or converting things rather than making entirely new ones.

Currently attempting to figure out how to replace some lost Skitarii legs. Thinking I find some guitar strings, drill a couple torso holes and make a bundle of leg-tentacles just for that guy.
>>
>>55369779
Would you say it's your...last resort?

Seriously, it'll be fine. Just use a pull cut and be patient and you should be fine.
>>
>>55369923
Wait I thought that you only had to have all HERETIC ASTARTES in the same legion
>>
>>55369944
Look at page 156, "chaos space marine units".
>>
>>55369916
Don't quote me on this, but I think I've seen some 12 inch DS rules around. On an infiltrator-type unit, I think.
>>
>>55369944
yeah afaik detachments carry traits not the entire army
>>
>>55369916
This stuff is very easy to tweak that little enough to destroy the game.
You don't want it right out the index. How the fuck you cannot understand it is beyond me.

>>55369944
nvm I misread the other guy. If your demon doesn't have <legion> then it will tank the trait
>>
>>55369980
Oh, I somehow didn't make the connection from that section in regards to the legion traits.

Bummer, was hoping to have mixed detachments.

Cons- Oh.
Assassins

Weak army, trash list.
>>
>>55369916
There are plenty of units that have tweaks in the deep strike distance where appropriate. Callidus Assassin, GSC Cult Ambush, Tau Stealth Homing Beacons, etc. It's a perfectly reasonable design decision to keep the deep strike distance consistent and have the exceptions be major exceptions. Many melee armies have access to charge re-rolls to increase their chance of a melee alpha strike. I don't see where this is a "worrying trend" at all.

Iyanden Eldar. Yellow and blue ghost warriors marching inexorably onward risking their very souls for the craft world are just too cool. Pic related is my most recent dudes.

DEldar are the same race I guess... and a few have joined the Ynnead so they aren't all bad.

A bl terminator with a flail should be 48. They're waacfag bait because they're obviously better than hammer assault terms for 4 points less.
