I'm playing vs tau in a couple hours.

I'm not sure whether to use my new guard or my new thousand sons. I've had a few games with guard, but I've never seen tsons fielded, much less used them myself.

I'm doing 1000 pts, and I have ahriman, 2 rubric squads, and termies. Aside from shitting out smites, what else should I be doing?

Alternatively, I have guard, and I'm trying to make them steel legion, though at the moment, I got the army secondhand and they had them as cadians, so I just have a lot of footsoldiers...aside from shitting out conscripts, what should I try and focus on/field?

Grenade stuff for DG:

Get 7 random memey Plague Marines within range of something you don't like. Then use the Grenade Bombardment stratagem and VotLW while being close to Grenade Guy.

You now do 7d6, S4, Ap-0, 2D attacks which reroll 1s to wound and gain +1 to wound. On top of this, every 5+ is a mortal wound in addition to any other damage.

Cooool.

I'm a new player to the game and picked Orks and I have the same concern. I very often repeat "this cool with you?" While trying to speed things up and kinda shove boyz around.

Our shop has a lot of those crater scenery pieces and those are a nightmare to move boyz onto cus they won't stand up.

Honestly playing large amounts of models is a bit exhausting, I feel like I'd much prefer a smaller elite army.

I have an all day tournament this weekend out of town where I'll probably play no one I know and I'm kinda dreading it.

All Grey Knights Brother-Captains have a special rule where they can double the range of any Smite that is casted with 6" of them. Brother-Captain Stern has a special AoE Smite that affects DAEMON units, however it is only 6" in range. But since he is a friendly GREY KNIGHTS unit within 6" of himself, shouldn't his Smite actually be 12"?
>>
>>55370246
I mean, it wounds 5/6th of the time.

You'll hit 2/3rds of the time, and wound 5/6th of the time. That's 55% of the time.

There aren't really any shortcuts if your opponent insists you do it by the book. It really comes down to practice so you're comfortable doing all the movement quickly. This is really important to get down if you plan to field a horde in tournament. What can help is using a fixed movement template like this one rather than a tape measure. Usually it's easier to use for these kind of repetitive movements and is clearer for your opponent. Lots of companies make them.

What are Deathshroud stats?
From my calculation they shoud be M3
6(standard)-1(termie)-1(cataphractii)-1(nurgle)=3
Are they W3? They shoud be W3 or W4.
>>
>>55370384
Night Lords do.
>>
>>55370119
Mortars, non-LoS fire support, and character killers.

With the nerf to cover tau have become flimsy. They don't have a lot of indirect weaponry without some manner of markerlights on the target, so your cheap mortar teams can do a lot of damage. The Wyvern has been nerfed but can still pull its weight.

Tau characters are almost ad powerful as guard officers, which means they should be a priority target. If you have any assassins, bring one, and if you have any ratlings, bring them and have them scamper in and out of LoS (they can move before and after shooting) while popping enemy officers.

Cut off the head and the body will die...to artillery.
>>
>>55370403
They have quite a bit, but it's far less consistent than smite spam armies.

They're unreliable, expensive, and close range. Don't sweat it.
>>
>>55370403
Not really, most of their mortal wounds are in the 7" radius around units or characters.

>>55370406
They are M4, W2, 2+, 4++, 5+++. I believe they have 3 attacks base, 4 with sergeant.

They give characters nearby +1 attack (except Mortarion). And they can 'take a hit' instead of a character on a 2+.

That's all we know really in terms of rules and stats.

True enough, but everyone I play with casts it solely on pox walkers for whatever reason.
Still, this is more of a counter for rhino rush in general, yeah poping smoke helps, but the average of two n-lasers is somewhere around 3-4 and all it takes to cripple the movement of a rhino is 4 damage. The minimum damage a n-laser can do is 3 and you still have another waiting to smash smash the metal box in.

You'll wipe infantry off the table and are resistant to small arms, but rubrics DIE a slow death in melee. The aspiring sorcerer is NOT a melee powerhouse of any kind. Also, tanks are a problem.

Soulreaper Cannon is 15 points now, not 20.

Field a unit of cultists and a Malefic Lord ( HQ, 30 points, renegades and heretics) so you'll have full batallion. Veterans of the Long War stratagem will let you wound most tanks on 4+, letting you use that inferno AP to actually blow up vehicles. Anti-vehicle options are otherwise limited to daemon engines and hellbrutes.

Hellbrutes in particular are great distraction carnifexes (scourge and heavy bolter)

Playing against GK is a bit like that already, they'll murder pretty much anything with Smite spam when they still have all their units, but once the total number of units starts to drop the mortal wounds quickly start to become insignificant.

2005. Tyranids. I was drawn to the hobby from DoW and friends who collected it. One collected Necrons, the other Chaos. I looked at all the factions on the GW website and thought that Dark Eldar looked coolest, even with their ancient 2nd edition models at the time. However Tyranids had just got a new codex and a massive box filled with lots of models, so I figured that was good value and I bought it. There was also a Tyranids vs Ultramarines box set which I bought. Also bought a couple of battle forces. Back then it was £50 for a Carnifex, 3 warriors, 10 gants, 10 hormogaunts and 10 genestealers IIRC.

Most of it went to waste, since I was young, didnt really know how the rules worked. Initiative, armor penetration, retreat etc... was all really confusing for a newcomer and I just burned out after a few months.

Kept interest though, with the newer DoW games, with various cool stuff. I was tempeted to jump back in when I saw the redesign of the Dark Eldar. I remember seeing an interview with Jes Goodwin and it was so cool, sadly I hadn't the funds.

Now I have my own job and shit, so I started again, this time with Death Guard since new models and a big starter set. So far I've painted/based etc around 1000pts from the starter set and I'm happy with it. Not looking around for a new army or anything, just wanna start playing.

Depends on the DG army I guess. If you are facing a good morty and poxwalker screen and deathshround support with multiple layered buffs you are pretty much fucked as a pure cc list. You won't get to the buff characters and it's takes to long to chew through the screening units to survive the mortal wound spam.

What you need to do is trying to keep them busy and on a corner of the battlefield they don't want to be while you play the mission.

If you want to try to kill the blob you'll have to peel off the buffs before you get into cc. GKs have decent firepower and good smiting power themselfs. problem is that you will most likely die if you don't do enough damage before you get close.

So yeah, might be a hardcounter for your list.

Orks have it worse I would say. They have almost nothing to throw at DG in general and will just die.

2002, I got a box of Tau Fire Warriors and had no idea what they were for. I just knew they looked neat. Found out they were unpainted models that had to be assembled and spent the whole day with my dad painting them. Realized months later, it was part of an actual game. Went to local Hobby Town and saw all the armies and painted figures.

My first army turned out to be Blood Angels. I got a second hand LR Godhammer pattern, CC Termies, some Bolter Marines, and the old hybrid Honor Guard boxes along with the old hybrid Death Company boxes. It was awesome, my dudes moved fast, all had furious charge, and were all limited to a $17 fifteen page codex. I still have it. I then went to the Guard when the Vostroyans were released. Stayed there for a while then sold them. After that I took a break. I got into the xenos when the new DE book and models came out in 2008. Took mid to tail end of 5th and the entirety of 6th edition off. Came back for 7th, started collecting Tau, but it was part of an old collection I had. Didn't pick up a single Riptide until last year. Just got a Stormsurge about a month ago.

Never tried to play cheesy, just liked to have fun and played what I thought was good and fun. In the process of getting everything cleaned and ready to prime. All my FWs, Pathfinders, Crisis Team, and Devilfish are primed.

Rate your most common enemy factions in terms of scariness on the tabletop, what worries you and what you can easily handle.

I normally fight variations on Loyalist Marines and Blood Angels, although in a relatively casual meta. Hellblasters and lascannon Preds scare the hell out of me, as does the Guilliman/heavy gun blobs that I tend to come up against, but they seem to have a lot of troops that don't do much other than stand around and get shot. Khorne Bezerkers are surprisingly simple kills, but Hellforged Levi dreads have been kicking the crap out of me and I can't really do much about Night Lords raptor swarms.
Most players seem to have some meta stuff by sheer chance around here like Guilliman or Magnus, but everything else is a bit of a random pile/the results of two or three Primaris starter boxes. I'm still pretty new myself, feel like I need a Cawl and more Vanguard to focus fire and block DS.

No army "needs" conversion. You can play anything perfectly fine out of the box.
>>
>>55371553
Very few if any armies *need* conversions these days, 20 years ago and before GW actually made minis for all the options they let you take in the codex (they made no powerklaw warboss for example) you needed to get yourself a saw and pinning wire, but these days you'll be fine without having to chop anything up.
>>
>>55371553
I wouldn't necessarily recommend going in for major conversions when starting out in the hobby. But once you've got a bit of practice, are fairly familiar with how the kits go together, and have accumulated a pile of spare bits, it can be fun to start changing things.
>>
>>55371553
>don't need a lot of conversion?
No army really "needs" conversions at all other than arm swaps for Havocs or similarly ancient and unupdated units, and blind idiots can manage those. Running totally stock armies is fine, almost everyone started out that way and many carry on with it. If you choose to convert stuff you'll probably botch the first couple goes like everyone else, but that's what freezing superglue is for.
Conversions are just a positive for tinkering about with stuff to make cool HQs, or maybe theme some allied units in with your army better. Nothing really to be gained from deliberately cutting yourself off from future tricks.

Also, even if you're NOT converting for gods sake get a knife to do mouldlines and flash, or it'll all look godawful.

Greenstuff is a lot easier to work with than you think it would be. I just used some for the first time last night on a few berzerker conversions and as long as you keep your hands/tools wet you can do a lot with it. Basically, converting's not hard at all. You just have to know what you're doing.

If you don't wanna convert at all though, you don't have to. Just about every army works just fine out of the box and people just like to convert to give their armies that personal touch.

You get enough marines for pretty much as many as you want, especially if you turn 5 into chosen with plasma, the termies work great as an elite decapitation strike to go with the termie captain who you can use as a lord or sorcerer
Also alpha legion doesn't look super chaosy since they didn't fully commit to the gods, so it makes sense they aren't super spiky or mutated

They look hard to paint though.

>Should I bother with making elaborate bases, and if so, should I hold off on glueing the armless Tau to their bases?
It all depends on how much work you're willing to put into your army. A nice diorama base isn't actually all that difficult, just look up some YouTube tutorials. If you're planning on doing more than just slathering on some texture paint then you probably shouldn't glue the models down before basing.

Its the thing for the new DG tank.

One is going to be called a 'Volley Gun', one is going to be a 'Heavy Slugger'.

IMO the Slugger has better rules, but we don't really know which is which. Which of the two looks like a 'volley gun' and which looks like a 'heavy slugger'?

Fuck, Guillman killed Astartes Chapter in 8th by making Primaris with Legiones Astartes tatics.
10 man Tatical squad was equipped with 1 heavy and 1 secial weapon.
Legion squad was 10-20 all boltgun, but they have support squads(5-10 guys with special weapon) and heavy support squads (5-10 guys with heavy weapon).
But Chapter have 1000 guys when legion have 100 000. Chapters needed to be flexible because they haven't many guys and Guillmans numarines aren't flexible at all.

Slugger has got to be on the right, the bore size is much bigger.

Sounds like left has rate of fire, right has power. Stats?

I'm currently thinking about mixing the forge worlds in different detachments. I guess there might be some additional synergies hidden.
I mean stuff cawl in a spearhead, but a dominus as warlord in a melee heavy / infantry / plasma detachment and look what sticks.

Sad to do a patchwork army, but there's still hope.

Especially since I've heard that rangers will be dropped to 8 and vanguard to 9.

Additionally, Enginseers will be HQ

My limit for cons is 60-70 total and that's for tourney lists
I'm really liking how guard is, they've got stronger units and lots of options, some guys who have never gotten much love got buffed (ogryns, rough riders)
My only gripe is some units have gotten so good (scions) that it leaves other units that serve a similar purpose in the dust (mechanized vets)
When I'm playing in a tourney or just a try hard environment I usually run a backbone of my two squads of conscripts, scions, my thunderbolt fighter, and shitloads of artillery buffed by Harker
In more funsy games I love two squads of four ogryns in chimeras, some Russ variants, rough riders, and other shinanigans mixed in to dilute my try hardness and make it more fun

I think the place for veterans is in airdrop.

A team of vets with a heavy flamer, 3 plasma guns, and a platoon commander (and commissar if you're feeling excessive) is a nice package to dump out of a valkyrie. They arrive in rapid fire range and the commander can order them not to kill themselves when they shoot.

Of course a Command Squad does the same job for less points, but it doesn't have the wounds to stick around.

Only played 2 in 8e so far, but both of them came down to the wire. DE are more fragile by design and so are commonly considered "less forgiving" since you can't use natural durability to bail out bad positioning. However I think that's a bit overblown these days. There is no army too complex to make a good first army and the time and money investment of collecting and painting an army is big enough that I think it's better to choose the army you like the best from the get go rather than trying to go with a "beginner army" at first.

tl;dr DE are fucking cool and have sweet models, play them.

Mortarion's trait is the Plague Weapons one. It doesn't apply to his S16 attacks but it does most likely affect his S8 attacks, and his nurgling claw attacks.

Use Enginseers as Junior Magi and such with different wargear like fancy power swords and such, since they only have one loadout, use Cawl's rules as custom Archmagos, give a relic to a Dominus for a subordinate (possibly with a unique model) and then ally custom Assassins for Skitarii Primus types. Eversor = Ruststalker Princeps Primus, Vindicare = Ranger Alpha Primus, Callidus or Culexus for Infiltrator since both have an "advanced neurostatic" aura and sneaky powers.

Its sad, they have 1 good power while the rest are hugely situational or just plain shit and the good power is very good.

DG ones are all pretty much fine. The only 'bad ones' are +1t and the Mortal Wounds one, even then those shit on the GK ones.

The Chaos Space Marine ones are all mostly good, one is situational, only good vs Space Marines but the rest are just fine. GW really dropped the ball on GK. Feels like such a half assed codex, with a few viable units pigeonholing you to them. Not like you can't do a viable, or even WAAC army, its just that there are so few ways to do it that it all looks the same.
>>
>>55372447

Write a List for Medium and Bigger Games First, If possible try doing some proxy games to get a feel for it and be Unbiased to which models you already own (in case you have theDG half of thr DI-Box)

then buy the Models you need first, nothing stops you from doing changes later on. But nothing feels as bad as playing a List you know is trash because you have painted the wrong models in wrong order.

Dont buy more than 3 sets until youre finished with the first as a Start.

Get Poxwalkers and Normal Marines First,
(always feel free to slot a Character inbetween steps as a Reward)

then buy the Blightlord Termis / Drones

Buy Tank and the remaining Characters

Do the Deathshroud Together with Mortarion, They are clearly a Defensive Character Guard. But I dont think Theyll be worth it other than Guarding Morty or a bigger blob of Command Characters Deathstar style.

The Idea is that you can make your higher-tier Units look better since youve learning their colours Technique by painting earlier stuff, and you will have a functioning Army Pretty early on.

They think they've got it all figured out, are drawn to charismatic leaders, and have no understanding of how the universe really works.

>hating named characters
>but not making a "your dudes" model with the proper wargear and using the rules for a named character
I'll never understand you people
>>
>>55372725
Morty is the biggest hypocrite and failure in the entire 40k universe you fucking mongoloid. Every time he makes an appearance in the fluff he gets BTFO physically or verbally. Beyond being a Primarch he's as far away from a Mary Sue you can get. Kill yourself.
>>
>>55373103
Ehh, recreating iconic army's has it's own apeal. I use Tau for "my dudes" as the faction is a blank slate beyond a few charecters.

I got into DG specifically to recreate the only tolerable faction in HH.
>>
>>55373227
That's not how you spell alpha legion
>>
>>55373103
Any named character takes away from the "your dudes" feel of an army. The only one I make an exception for is girlyman, because ultrafags need him, and he's more of a god of war than an actual part of the army.
>>
>>55373195
Big pile of this. Custom Cawl, custom Magi, custom Inquisitors as Coteaz. Much simpler, and kinda fun.
Custom Primarchs would be hard, though, but they're strong enough that I'd probably say suck it up in that case.
>>
>>55371640
Story time!
Also Orks.

>>55373186
Kek, wouldn't agee with you, but you tell the idea well.

>DG is the only tolerable legion
>Only person not insufferable was Garro
Care to share your thought process so we can figure out where it went wrong?
>>
>>55373103
Any named character takes away from the "your dudes" feel of an army. The only one I make an exception for is Mortarion, because deathguardfags need him, and he's more of a physical avatar of pestilence than an actual part of the army.

It's funny to see you samefag this hard, but Celestine actually has an excuse: she's an avatar of the emperor's will, and shows up in the lore on battlefields all across the galaxy as divine intervention. All the characters that you've mentioned so far are more mundane.
>>
>>55373195
It's a bit difficult in 8th when restrictions like "Dante is the chapter master of the Blood Angels and can't be used in a Flesh Tearers force" exist.

Any named character takes away from the "your dudes" feel of an army. The only one I make an exception for is super chicken, because chaosfags need him, and he's more of an aspect of change than an actual part of the army.

>Meet up with girl from tinder
>We meet up and go back to my place
>she wants to watch me jack off

>She sucks on my flacid dick for a bit, I suck on her tits
>she leaves

She was super nice about it at least, and we're meeting up again in a few days

Your phrasing implies this is going to be an autistic disagreement of opinion so not really.

But fuck it, I'm referring to how they were written, not them as people.

That's wrong though.

It's funny to see you samefag this hard, but Guilliman actually has an excuse: he's an avatar of the emperor's will, and shows up in the lore on battlefields all across the galaxy as heroic intervention. All the characters that you've mentioned so far are more mundane.

Anon 90% of arguments here are based on subjective opinion
Even faggots like Carnac who claim to back everything they say up with sources is usually bending them to his own biased view
Below us are faggots arguing about bringing characters with nothing but their subjective opinions because a symptom of autism is not understanding how others might view something
That being said I did think you meant they were written like that, and the whole point of their writing is that they are all mostly assholes, but yeah I agree they are done pretty well
Honestly I have no room to talk, my favorite traitor legion is the alpha legion and they are near Mary Sue levels with how all their plans fall into place
>>
>>55373386
It's funny to see you samefag this hard, but An'ggrath actually has an excuse: he's an avatar of Khone's will, and constantly jobs in the lore on battlefields all across the galaxy as plot intervention. All the characters that you've mentioned so far are more mundane.

When can we expect the DG codex uploaded to the mega?
>>
>>55373724
When you buy it and do it youself, you poor cunt
>>
>>55373805
I have more important things to buy, like models for armies I actually collect. I'm considering selling my necrons for a Nurgle army though, so I'd like to see if I want it first.
>>
>>55374004
other people have more important things to do than meticulously document and provide you with the rules they bought. take your demands for an ETA on someone else's charity and shove it. If you aren't gonna help you can wait.
>>
>>55373567
That plan fell into two places.
>>
>>55371553
As just about all the replies pointed out to you, no army needs conversion, the people giving conversions as a positive to their army mean that the fluff supports conversions and creativity for their army.
Space Marines and Imperial Guards have a uniform.
Orks and Chaos do not and can be modified with "conversions" if you want to make something new and interesting.
Renegades and Heretics for example don't even have a lot of models, there's cultists, renegade psykers, and conversion bits for them you can buy in packs, but other than that and the Ogryns they're missing a lot. It helps that they can just take Guardsmen stuff and make it chaos, it's even possible to make Chaos Krieg, you shouldn't because Krieg will shoot themselves before falling to chaos, but you can.
>>

When did I demand anything? A bit sensitive, aren't you?
