Pallid wych flesh can still be highlighted, whereas white scar is about as bright/white as GW paints go, so models painted with it can look a bit flat without highlights. For that reason I'd recommend pallid wych flesh for the main body of the armour, and you can still use the white scar to highlight.
>>
From the last thread,

>>56777547
White Scars are more of a glossy 'normal' white that is best reproduced using a light grey then highlighting in white scar paint. I think Duncan has a good video on the warhammer tv youtube channel.

Luna Wolves are more of a pearly white colour so you might want to use effects paints for it. Tamiya make some pearl white paints if you fancy them.

Nothing wrong with doing both in white scar though, just depends what you're after.

Building up to white from a grey or blue base makes them look cold and therefore professional, ruthless, evil etc.
Conversely buying from a bone or cream base looks warm and thus dynamic, organic, good etc.

As such I'd suggest Scars from bone and Wolves from grey. On a similar note I find the stock Wolf scheme to look very shitty and think a Cerberus style with yellow and black would look the tits, though change the colour to 'warm'.

Yes there is. The rest of your post is right, you only highlight with pure white. Nothing 'white' is actually white in real life.

Ulthuan Grey for a cool white. For White Scars I like some sort of ivory, highlighted with white, and then washed a bit with, not sure what I used here, browns and dark grays.

But I need to figure out if I want bright reds or bright golds. I don't think I want both - one of them will be seriously desaturated in my next try.

The problem with taking a 'realistic' approach to a scheme like this is that it comes out looking like a real mess.
Sometimes I think a more stylised and cleaner approach is better on the legions with cartoonish colour schemes.

Corax is fine. Loyalist primarchs don't all have to be nice guys or be always successful. Plus, Thulsa Doom haircut.

They have fun rites of war, and lots of shrouding and jump packs. Best of all, they feel right even when played as the small forces we actually put on the tabletop.
>>
>>56785137
>i dont want my army to be a bunch of bug eyed weirdos.
Uh... one of the Blackshields wrought by war things was designed specifically to represent those Raptor dudes. But there weren't that many. Use the normal RG rules for non-weirdo RG.

which legions aren't bug eyed
>>
>>56786140
are they really? are there any l33t operator marines that arent weird freaks?
>>
>>56786298
What does bug-eyed even mean? To me it means compound eyes and no one has those.

The Raven Guard have black eyes. The Salamanders have red eyes. That should be it for really weird eyes, right? Wait, Night Lords too maybe - or was it just Curze?

Alpha Legion are not bug eyed, they just have strange personalities. I wouldn't be surprised if someone wrote them with serpent eyes but it'd be a deliberate modification.

Emperor's Children are also potentially l33t though they think sneaking is beneath them and will only do it to show up the Alpha Legion. Ultramarines actually have a secret police force, much of which is made up of failed inductees who are halfway between human and space marine. Dark Angels are secretive (especially in their brief appearance in the novella Wolf King, which is great). White Scars have good scouts, though that isn't quite the same thing. Night Lords are sneaky but potentially bug eyed and certainly creepy. Thousand Sons have Indiana Jones-like scouts with psychic powers.

Anyone have the ruinstorm audiobook?
>>
>>56787349
Fundamentally, you want a degreasing product.

LA's Totally Awesome (that's a product name) is great. Simple Green's alright but on the weaker side and make sure you've got the degreaser product, but it affects green stuff (they all might). Castrol Super Clean is more powerful but you need to limit the soak to... dunno, 6-10 hours? It's riskier. Superclean and Purple Power are basically the same stuff. I've heard some people say you can leave minis in there for days, but there's some disagreement.

1. Is the Stormhawk an acceptable model to crowbar into the Heresy?
I dislike the appearance of both the Xiphon and the Lightning, so to pay silly money for something ugly seems bad.

2. Chin-cannon, more guns on the wingtips, underwing rocket launchers. Which one is that closer to.

3. Which is stronger, Xiphon or Lightning? Raven Guard Recon Company for reference. Current Spartan solution is infiltrating Quad-Rapiers and a few GravSpeeders.
>>
>>56798882
The lightning is more versatile in terms of load-out (and Kraken Penetrators will kill anything if you fire the entire payload at once), but I suspect that the Xiphon is better long term, because none of its weapons have limited ammunition.

>>56798882
Using bits entirely from the kit, you can work the Stormhawk into a passable Lightning and equip it WYSIWYG too (fixed TL Lascannon, options for at least one TL Autocannon, as well as missiles). To my understanding, a Voss-Lightning is wider by maybe half an inch on each side, but it's not like smaller Lightnings haven't existed. As long as you and/or your opponent aren't cunts, there should be no problems regarding size. Xiphon may be a bit tougher due to the armament, but with some bits and creativity you can probably pull it off.

I personally prefer Lightnings for their cost comparative to what they bring to the table. Xiphons are better overall, but they cost more and will draw even more attention.

Does anybody here own any Reivers?
I am thinking of buying kit, severing the legs at the knee and then splicing in some MkIV shins.
Concerned that Primaris are massive, but a lot of that height seems to be in the legs.

So that gives me torso bits. Add in some MkIV arms holding Shotguns, and probably new heads from somewhere. Probably keep the Primaris backpacks; call them thermal-damped recon specials.

Plus it gives me 10 sets of stabby knives and pistols to make some Despoilers with.

Retribution needs some FAQing too. In the White Scars' Legiones Astartes special rule, I can't figure out during which phases Swift Action applies. Is it only during Movement and Assault, or all phases until the start of your next turn? It can only come into effect during your Movement phase, so it only makes sense for them to mention the Assault phase if it doesn't affect every phase. And did they mean for Born in the Saddle to only affect Bike and Jetbike units?

It's badly written but as I understand it:
Swift Action rerolls 1s in melee only. It's dependant on long charges (Nat 12s on bikes or 6+ for infantry) or 'cheating' in movement (riding a transport). Should probably be FAQd to moving full distance.
RAW even your infantry are terrain-proof. Probably not intended though.

>‘Is he even on this world?’ asked Valdor doubtfully. ‘We have detected nothing.’

>Russ drew up to Valdor then. He was a little shorter, much broader, his armour stained and smeared where Valdor’s was pristine. ‘Oh, yes,’ he hissed, smiling in a disconcertingly feral manner. ‘I can smell him now. I can smell him hunkering down in his own filth, fearful of me.’

>Valdor remained unmoved. ‘Even now, I would see him taken to Terra, if it could be done. I would wish to know why.’

>Russ laughed, a coarse bark that sent more spittle flying into Valdor’s faceplate. ‘You’re still clinging to that? Ha!’ He turned away, swinging his greatblade casually. ‘I’ve known since I first saw this world that we would face one another. I did not come here for prisoners, Constantin. If my Father had truly wished for such, He would not have sent me.’

>‘You were not sent alone, Lord Russ.’

>Russ glanced back at Valdor, a sly smile on his fanged face. ‘Oh, that’s it, is it?’ He laughed again, but it was an ice-cold sound. ‘You have the power of Magisterium, and wish to cling to it.’ Russ paced back to him again. He was always moving, restless, like a tempest bound up inside the sham-form of a man. ‘Don’t try to invoke the Lex with me. You claim to speak for my Father, but you’re not His blood, are you? Not like we are. That’s what really gets you, isn’t it? You’re His instruments. He’d toss you aside in an instant if He cared to. We, though. We. We’re family.’ Russ gave out a great belly-laugh then, amused by the idea. ‘You’ll never understand that.’

>from custodes' POV, Emps cares most about custodes and doesn't really care about primarchs
>from mechanicum's POV, Emps cares most about mechanicum and doesn't really care about primarchs or custodes
Wow, it's almost like this is a thing Emps does depending on who he's talking to at the time.

My view is that Emps cares most about humanity as a whole, not any individual or group of individuals, and is quite happy to use/deceive/exploit particular groups (like the custodes or the primarchs or the navigators or the mechanicum) as required for the good of the species. Malcador is possibly the only exception, because Malcador is the only one with the same worldview.

You should have a look at Dark Imperium. That's actually what Guilliman believes and the reason why he hasn't turned traitor yet despite having daddy issues like some of his brothers.
>>
>>56811646
>from mechanicum's POV, Emps cares most about mechanicum
When was this sentiment ever espoused?
From all I've read the general consensus of the mechanicum was at least a little distrust. Mars declared for Horus in large part over a belief that the Emperor was likely to get rid of them once the galaxy was claimed and the extra production capacity stopped being worth putting up with a non-secular element of the Imperium with so much autonomy.

Does anyone know where I can purchase these Custodes models? I don't particularly like the GW ones (too fat, terrible looking spears, covered in "stuff" rather than being detailed), but these models are just fantastic. They look just like the artwork.

Sorry about the shit picture. It was the best I could find.
>>
>>56812226
Technically, yes. Politically, there was a considerable chunk of distrust on both sides of that, we've seen the Martian equivalent of the Cabinet arguing over involvement in the Crusade and later on the sabre-rattling before the Schism of Mars. Malcador and Zagreus Kane get into some pretty heated debates a few times, too.

Is it only me who'd absolutely watch a short season of the Great Crusade equivalent to West Wing or House of Cards? Kinda liked the little politics bit in The Emperor's Legion, and you've got decent plotlines with all the different factions floating around. The only problem would be getting a proper overview of the political situation in the pilot episode without being really boring, since those two generally assume you already have at least a decent layman's understanding.

Yep. I'm not a fan of their torsos but the helmets have gotta be the coolest FW makes for any legion. I like them so much I've been considering using the skull-faced ones for some XXth vets.

Not sure if you're the anon asking for weathering tips but for IW I think the trick is a battered look rather than a grimey look. Grime and rust is for DG, chipping and scrapes are for IW.

I did use a bit of Typhus Corrosion around the boots and ankles to imply slogging around a trench.
>>
>>56814416
Thanks, I am that anon!
I've been doing similar with typhus corrosion, I guess I was trying to do a combination of grime/rust and chipping/scrapes, through building up washes on armour, followed by drybrushing

I've done the chipping a couple ways. I just get a thin brush and and use Stormhost Silver and make little slices along the corners and edges. I try to keep it around areas that would move a lot or be used in combat. Knees, elbows and wrists/shins.

Chris Wraight seems to get Custodes better than anyone else, it seems. I've recently blizzed through Carrion Throne and The Emperor's Legion and now Magisterium and his Custodes feel very accurate to how I always thought they'd be.
>>
>>56816067
Honestly, Wraight is really becoming one of my favorite BL authors. He does character interaction amazingly well. His action scenes are kinda average (and he likes the word 'crunched' too much), but whenever you get just two people talking you quickly get a feel for who they are and what their deal is.
>>
>>56801733
The torso scale is way off for primaris, you'd be better off trying to use gs to modify the armour to mkiv and just have huge boys, what you're proposing would be an abomination of scale even further beyond current models
>>
>>56812966
valdor has always primarch-sized at least in what I've read

I have seen Russ described as shorter though. He's supposed to be hairy bulk and muscle but shorter, like Wolverine from the X-Men. the big Primarchs are Magnus, Ferrus, Horus, Vulkan, and Mortarion

>>56816074
Yeah, Wraight succeded in making the Custodes super-obedient warriors without turning them into total autists. I mean, Custards in MoM were just caricatures of psychopaths, they were soooo far beyond any moral consideration... it wasn't even disturbing. Wraight's Custodes are scarrier IMO. They seem quite human and level-headed but you KNOW they would still blindly follow any order from their master no matter horrible or absurd it may be.

>>56816141
Scars was really great, I didn't expect that. Dark Imperium was a nice surprise too. I have been a Bobby G hater for years but I must admit the way Wraight characterized him made me change my mind about the blue guy. That's quite an achievement desu.

There is no 'Primaris' Lightning, there is the original and the Voss pattern. Primaris is just an indication they're HH-era Lightnings, with a different loadout than 40k ones.

As for the pattern, yeah, the original is the best (really wish FW didn't discontinue it, or at least make an updated variant). But it also allows lee-way in terms of building conversions. The Voss is not the only type of Lightning ever, nor is it the only size. As far as I've been able to tell, the originals are smaller than Voss-patterns overall. In that regard, as long as the fighter being used fits the general dimensions and mounts the proper weapons, I'd accept it as a Lightning fighter type.

Bought some reivers. Kit made the recon plan unworkable.
Instead, turned a lot if the model into a Fury. Still need some special claws and the Pack is from Anvil. Cut off his knees for MkIV.
He's noticeably bigger but he's also got a raised base, the difference isn't too bad imo. The pack also helps to mask some of the excess. Second model under construction looks to be almost the same height.

Inferno established that Russ was a complete asshole. The historian telling the events tried to word it tactfully, but even then had to resort to using a Space Wolf saga excerpt to gloss over the part where Russ murdered civilians (which happened before the kill em all order, when Valdor still hoped to salvage the situation).

The short is just letting us see the absolute slavering retard in action. Despite people praising FW fluff over BL fluff, things like Russ being a legit cockmongler only get more traction when they appear in BL for some reason.

Not really, the situation would have been different in various ways if it was any of the other Primarchs with Valdor. That would an interesting amount of speculation.
Valdor alone would have in no way launched an attempted exterminatus.

"Magnus wanted to commit suicide by cop" was never a good attempt at excusing murdering a planet just to get to one guy. Just accept that even the great Leman Russ can be presented in a negative light on occasion. Flawless heroes right in all regards always and forever who always win are bad characters. Russ actually being a lunatic berserker in certain situations and it not being 'just an act bro!' makes him slightly more interesting in all regards.

They didn't launch nukes at every bit of the planet *except* Tizca and the forge, they hit them too. They intended to fuck the place raw.

Well no, Prospero had an entire animal foodchain, but even then, if we don't care about animals, we've just ensured the entire population is going to have to be shifted planet or left to die. Oh wait, we meant to nuke them all anyway.

You realise part of the reason FW wrote in a bunch of innocent army dudes on the wrong world on the wrong day is to get it through people's heads that it was a complete tragedy launched by all-too-human hubris and errors on all sides? Because believe it or not, people actually didn't give a fuck that a bunch of civilians got killed, so they wrote in a bunch of rando soldiers because we care about them.

Attempts to pass off Prospero as a rational and leavened use of force are never going to convince, the ships came out of the warp, torpedoed the orbital stations and blew away the system ships before even saying hello, surrender please. Russ gave Magnus about 30 seconds to reply before trying to *glass the planet he was on* and was only convinced to give it an hour to stop Valdor whining at him.

Magnus was a cunt and deserved to be got, but this idea that Leman is a calculating masterplan who acts rationally but with the appearance of savagery is just a step SW fans tell themselves because for some reason they can't accept the part of their legion which is based on actual vikings who came off their longboats to sack, rape and pillage their way through monasteries.

Practically no one knows about Valdor. So I would give it a very small chance.

They aren't going to get any new rules, only special characters and units. So unless Angelus introduces some Sekhmet tier unit for them or one of their characters is an auto-include then they are pretty much as good as they are going to be.

The Dark Angels legion rules are shite but they do have some excellent wargear that stops them from being terrible. They go from middle-ish tier if you don't use their rites to reasonably high if you do, Ironwing and Ravenwing are both excellent rites that give your army a lot.

The only problem is that they are so different you have to collect two different armies to play them, an Iron Warriors or Blood Angels list could look exactly the same using either of their Rites but the requirements for Ironwing and Ravenwing are so different you have to spend twice as much.

>oh, BTW, chaos canonically wins 40k because I said so
bullshit. He probably won't answer if asked about that though, just cry about any questions that upset him for about 6 years before making a passive-aggressive blog post.

I mean, I didn't find MoM that offensive, but his afterword was utter bullshit. Whoever at GW allowed him to state that every 40k game that's ever been played is actually pointless because the final outcome is decided literally needs to be fired.

>>56828620
That's also how I read it. Regardless about what you think of ADB as a writer/person: thinking that his stance on the 40k lore can be reduced to "chaos canonically wins 40k because I said so" is pretty dumb and cancerous. It's litterally making stuff up in your head so that you have something to be angry about.

You are a dumbass. All lore in 40K history makes it out that humanity is doomed. It's not ADB's stance, It's 40K's stance.

>ADB saying "humanity is doomed and can't win" is an unnacceptable corruption and misunderstanding of the setting.
Are you saying that you can't enjoy 40k if there is no hope for humanity?

There's a huge difference between a setting being grim and dark and deadly and generally a shitty place to live, and a setting in which losing/extinction is guaranteed. Here's the first and last paragraph from the opening lore pages of the 8th edition 40k rulebook. It says things like
>humanity's only chance for survival
>there remains yet a shred of hope
i.e. that there is hope/a chance for survival. So, no, other lore does not actually state that there's no hope and humanity will definitely lose, it's just fucking ADB/BL.

>>56829390
Yep, I can see that says "humanity has lost", just like ADB said. Oh, wait, no it doesn't.

>>56829175
And yet Rick Priestly understood that even if that was his own view, (I'll take your word for it,) you don't put it into official lore (and I don't recall him ever saying it in interviews or whatever either) because to do so would ruin the setting. But Lauire Golding and ADB don't have Rick's common sense, apparently.
>>
>>56829564
>because to do so would ruin the setting.

It does not ruin the setting. It ruins your fanwankery.

>So, no, other lore does not actually state that there's no hope and humanity will definitely lose, it's just fucking ADB/BL.

Nope, the rulebooks says "these are the final days of the Imperium of Man". Dig deeper.

Also the Anniversary WD has this "The Imperium's downfall is a matter of time".

How is it fanwankery for all the factions in the setting to still have a chance surviving? That's the opposite of fanwank, surely. I'm not saying "the Imperium should win 40k" (which absolutely would be fanwank) just that they shouldn't be guaranteed to lose.

I do realise this is a slightly ironic argument to be having in /hhg/, where we know horus loses.
>>
>>56829676
Because you are fanwanking the other factions especially the Imperium. You cannot comprehend that other factions are meant not to win. You want to ruin the story and moral that 40K is trying to tell because the thought of your self inserts losing is just too much.

Disgusting.

Not >>56828960 but I can see his problem with the "humanity is doomed" speech.
>"there is nompeace amongst the stars only an eternity of carnage and slaughter and the laughter of thirsting gods."
>Eternity
That's the keyword. 40k is all about stagnation and survival at any cost. The Imperium is too powerful to be destroyed and too screwed to become a better place. It's not a somewhat heroic last stand against the forces of evil, it's a stalemate where humans are condemned to endure hopelessness and suffering forever.

The Imperium is such a grimdark place because humans believe they can endure anything if they pay the price, no matter how high it is. That's the only way players can feel any empathy for such a cruel regime. Giving them more insight about humanity's fate simply ruins everything about this faction, just as stating that the Long War is doomed to fail or that Ynnead will never ever rise and save the Eldar would destroy any sense of purpose.

But as >>56829655 showed, ADB isn't the sole responsible for that. GW has gone full End Times for almost a decade now.
>>

>>
>>56830206
>Scouts

Carapace Scouts exist in 30k, they just don't get to take anything other than pistols, shotguns, bolters and sniper rifles as weapons. Sergeant can take Artificer Armour (so a PA model can be used) and various other weapons.

>newish Dreadnoughts

You mean the Redemptor or just Boxnoughts? Boxnoughts (aka. Castaferrum dreadnoughts) are in 30k. Just about all guns except assault cannons and helfrosts can be used.

>Fenrisian Wolves

Can be bought by characters.

>what should i get first?

Get a Betrayal at Calth box. You get a Contemptor, 6 Cataphractii terminators and 31 MkIV marines. It's a good base to start with.

>Bonus point if i can also use the units for 40k.

SW Grey Slayers are very flexible when it comes to equipment. You need at least 2 units, since they're your only source for Compulsory Troops. If you can buy 10 extra MkIV models, do it. With 4 kits you can make a missile launcher HW squad (give the sergeant a chainsword and a vox) as well as a support squad with 4 special weapons and a combi sergeant. That leaves you with 30 models to turn into, say, a 20 man blob and a veteran squad.

For 40k you can just mix the dudes to make Grey Hunter squads with special weapons and use the HW squad as Long Fangs.

Asked before alongside weathering stuff, but only got answers for weathering (which were great) so was gonna post again;
Are there any fluff friendly ways to add to the standard-ish iron warriors colour scheme - like the brass on world eaters? Just trying to mke scheme more interesting
>>
>>56831300
Can you rephrase that? Are you looking to do something like full metallic suit, but brass instead? Worn metal effects? Chevrons?
>>
>>56830317
Normally you can't get away with footslogging in 30k because of AP3 artillery.

However... Space Wolves get a nice bonus to running. One side effect is that assault marines are now viable in a list that doesn't use the Drop Assault Vanguard rite of war (which bases your army around assault marines and flyers). Normally you wouldn't mix assault marines with footsloggers because your army will arrive piecemeal, nor with rhino marines because the opponent's anti-tank can focus on your transports and his anti-infantry on the assault marines. But running/jumping at similar speeds works better.

Betrayal at Calth is ideal. Praetors usually work best in power (well, artificer) armor so convert the chaplain to one, and use the Terminator Praetor as some other Terminator character (or just a sergeant).

If you prefer the models in Burning of Prospero, but don't have a use for all of them, get the sprues off eBay and the instructions off imgur. Similar price, much cheaper than buying the Mk III squad box.
>>
>>56831622
I just mean any additions to the standard colour scheme on some of the marines,
Like how world eaters had brass on some parts like helmets, or I saw a sweet looking WE leviathan with brass plating
Current using silver plating, brass on parts like pouldron edges and small panels, as well as randomly placed chevrons
>>
>>56830593
Why would you give the missile HW weapon squad a vox? Because you lack the bits?
>>
>>56830529
As an Eldar player during 2nd-4th, I'll say that I did prefer pretending there was a glimmer of hope even if the official story was "they're doomed". You don't give up hope just because your race is dying - but you do have to acknowledge that things are in fact heading in that direction, and something surprising would have to happen to prevent it. (8th is less grimdark than ever with the Imperium getting a new leader who pulls resources out of his ass that allow the actual economic development of worlds, even those that are supposedly cut off from the Astronomicon and should be dying too. Gods I hate the new fluff. But not because it's hopeful, rather because of the plot ploys necessary to get that change.)

Ynnead didn't make a big difference back then because we thought his birth required the death of every Eldar.
>>
>>56831837
Yes? 4 MkIV kits gives you 4 missile launchers, while a squad would need 5 if you didn't give the sergeant a Vox. You could model him as something you could later use as a Siege Breaker or a Master of Signals, once you expand your collection.

I gave mine a vox so he can man a quad gun.
>>
>>56823744

They're good. They have that one nasty drawback, but plenty of advantages too - check out Radio Free Isstvan (podcast) episode 72 for an in depth rules analysis. It made them sound better than I initially thought after reading their rules.

Ravenwing's great, but it takes less advantage of their close combat bonuses than other rites of war. And I agree with >>56827083 that you have a difficult choice to make at the start because you can't really make a flexible army. Gotta choose a theme or wing and stick with it.
>>
>>56831825
The norm is yellow+black stripes for interest.

Old 40k IW always had some brass. It works best if you go for a cool (bluish) shade of metallic gray as your base. But if you go for a warm, dusty, more realistic look, then it blends in too much and what you want is something cool too offset it. That could mean highlighting the black in the hazard stripes with blue or turquoise, maybe using more of that cool black elsewhere. Or you have our brownish metallic gray with the occasional cool silver/aluminum panel or cable. Or blue glow in some of your weapons and eye lenses (could end up being too IH).

Not great. Other than going more into the Sanguinor, it didn't do much for me. I don't think the characterization is that great, nor the prose, though that did turn out better than in Damnation of Pythos. The horror's good, and a lot of the action. Dunno, it kinda matched the book's cover.
