What's your day job, elegan/tg/entlemen?

What do you play to escape the daily drudgery of Real Life?

I lord over pack of code monkeys and pamper machine spirit entrusted in my care.

Assorted skirmish games, because I only got so little free time.

I'm managing between college and working the Fitting Room at the Wal-Mart.

In my free time I run a game of Shadowrun, proclaiming the anti-corporate Truth and supporting anarchy.
In all reality, I have very little to complain about with Wal-Mart when I can shitpost during my shift, and I was hired at $12/hr and have basically no qualifications or marketable skills to speak of.
>>
>>57938080
Nah. I wouldn't push my people beyond 60 a week unless I absolutely have to. After all they only get paid for 40.

5e because it's all my friend group wants to play and it's better than nothing.
>>

I'm a teacher and a ForeverGM.
I like to play faggoty storygames filled with literary references, but those are hard to get going, so it's D&D 4e most of the time.
>>
>>57937918
English teacher and tutor.
I mainly play 40k currently. My GF and I are the only members of our RPG group who don't have shifting schedules, so we haven't had a game for quite a while.

Reporter. It sucks. Nobody likes journalists anymore, and as an industry, it's still struggling with the advent of the internet and the fact that everybody uses adblockers. The old guard is holding us back and far-right politics rising up again means even an article about how important winter tires are for road safety get called fake news.

I play 5e but I want to try out other games, especially Shadowrun or Cyberpunk 2020. I used to play Pathfinder but it nearly burned me out on tabletop RPGs altogether.

As a reporter it's literally in my job description to report on the news rather than force-feed my personal views to the audience.

Good joke, right?

Postgrad in inorganic chemistry (yes, it is a job, fuck you mom)

Right now I am playing mad scientist in sci-fi setting using DH2.0, the session where I either have to kill our psyker or he kills me is nigh. Also planning to finally get into 40K, but still haven't finished all that I want painted

Friend of a friend hosts board game night maybe once a month and they have some cool shit. I'd be interested in joining a TTRPG or picking up a wargame, but RPGs are a big time commitment and wargames are a big money sink. Self taught Fullstack Web Developer

I occasionally play D&D but I've been forcing myself to work pretty much all of my waking hours that I don't give myself time enough to play D&D. Browsing on /tg/ is the only thing I do as a break because if I do anything else I think I should be working on learning Web Development. I want to play Rogue Trader and Shadowrun sometime though.

It's a necessary craziness in order to be self taught.
>>
>>57937918
I own my own business. I play 5e, Battletech, 2e AD&D, WoD, assorted other mini games, and a bunch of PC games. I like being my own boss but I miss being able to blame other people for fucking my shit up because of their fuckups. It's all on me now. Though in a way it's nice because I'm kind of an asshole so I probably shouldn't ever be in charge of anyone else.

I fly a satellite at NASA. As long as you treat its machine spirit with respect, it will continue to orbit and do what it's supposed to. I learn something new every day with it. Sometimes, after the 11am daily nap, someone breaks something, and it's up to me and a small team to fix it. My fixes work 68% of the time the first time. You meet all sorts of interesting people, and people let you work on all sorts of stuff if you ask nicely, especially instrument integration and testing. I legit like my job.

I run 40krpgs, but I consider myself primarily a tabletop player, with my T'au, my Knights, and my Mechanicum.

I may have even worked on some of your favorite titles! I have not. I code mobile games

I'm a writer, which is to say that I'm a high functioning alcoholic with a lot of free time on my hands.

If you're getting into Shadowrun 5e then keep in mind that the rulebook is quite poorly made. dude I'm a postgrad as well in polymer chem and I have no idea how you can play that kind of character in a non fantasy setting. I've been really into sci-fi settings as of late but knowing anything about science really hinders game play when the rest of my group doesn't. At this point I can only play meathead characters or arrogant idiots so I won't have any in character reason to be clever about anything so I won't have to explain this or that to my group.

"Predictive Analytics Analyst"; I configure a monitoring program which gathers data and sends alerts when massive company-wide applications start having problems (which is distressingly frequent). It sounds more technical than it is, but then that might be impostor syndrome speaking.

>play to escape drudgery
My group's into Shadowrun now, but I want to play an ORE system. I don't see gaming as an escape; my life is going quite well so far, and I usually face my problems rather than running from them.

I think there are inherent filters to roleplaying. You need some basic life skills to really enjoy it: Mid-high literacy level / vocabulary, empathy, scheduling, patience, imagination/abstract thinking, the list goes on. But at the same time it's a very inexpensive hobby, so even people who aren't as well-off can enjoy it just the same. It's a hobby I'm very proud to be involved with.

I got out of consulting because screw working 60-hour weeks on salary. So I took a pay raise to work 30-something odd hours a week instead. I'm young enough to enjoy having a job where every owns a nerf gun and we have a kegerator with local brews on tap. I'm old enough to appreciate getting matching on my RRSP, an annual bonus in options or RSUs, and a second annual bonus in cash.

I've been working here for just over a year (with releases every five weeks) and I've never had to do crunch time because we communicate realistic deadlines to our PMs. If you're working for a place that makes you crunch, it's because they're willing to wring that productivity out of you. Respect yourself and find a better company my dudes.

> D&D, Delta Green, Eclipse Phase
I run a D&D 5e game at work with some of the men and women who are nerdy enough to like D&D but socially-adroit enough to not be mouth-breathers. Playing with new, normal people and not neckbeards with years of bad habits is the most amazing DMing experience in the world.

I also run a variety of sci-fi one shots online because I like my sci-fi and more esoteric systems too.

I consider myself currently unemployed.

Which is to say I occasionally do work for money, but the money is not sufficient for survival.

Examples:
-I write a comedic/informational cooking blog (think of a text version of Good Eats, for comparison) that makes around $20 a year at the minute (which, to be fair, is our second year, and we don't have advertising, so as small businesses go, it's not the worst loss in history)

-I had a gig where I was helping a dude build a winery, but my contact/ride to the work site moved.

-I work seasonally at my friend's comic book shop, where, if I wanted to, I could get a constant job. The problem would be that I would be paying his family rent from money they paid me, and I'd be essentially competing with my other friend for work hours, both of which make me leery of the job.

-I used to make some money running improv shows and seminars, but the group that hired me ran out of money.

And I left 2 paying jobs to end up in my parent's basement fatter, sadder, and worse than I came.

I don't get to play many games, because all my friends live in other towns.

Did I mention my father got pancreatic cancer last year.

I honestly wish any of this was a joke,
I left ~15,000 a year to be unemployed, 60 pounds heavier, and more alone than I've ever fucking been. Granted, it was because of medical bills and miscommunication, but Jesus my life fell apart.

And I do have group of normie friends who are willing to play board games, so that's something. We even played half a game of Fiasco a month or so ago!

I work a hotel front desk at a tiny oldschool-as-fuck hotel, and I'm slowly working towards trying to get a degree, probably in Fashion. Job is pretty chill, and I have a fun time meeting new tourists, using some of the odder names for NPC's, and trying to articulate how credit cards work to confused Brazillian tourists who speak absolutely nothing but Portugese.

I'm mostly a DM, though I just started a game of The Sprawl where I'm playing an pirate radio host. Other than that, I run a game of Qin: The Warring States homebrewed into A:TLA, a longrunning game of Wushu which I kind of regret and wish I had chosen a crunchier system. and just started a game of VtM.
I used to run a lot of 3.5 and Pathfinder back in the day too, and I homebrew up a lot of stuff. I've been wanting to try and publish some of those too, but between work and my own anxiety over their worth I haven't gotten very far.

Stories about what?

If it's related to the kids that play D&D, I don't really have any great stories. I don't hide that I play tabletop rpgs with my students, in fact students generally like my stories and I tell them that RPGs have helped me with storytelling.

I can't really remember how they described their campaign any more, but it just sounded awful. Just normal edgy 15 year old stuff.
>lol anon went up to this bar wench and was like hey u wanna have sex XD
>yeah well anon tricked him and then stole his wallet and kicked him in the nuts lmao
Just juvenile and sounds awful to play with. Along with them having arguments about the rules despite none of them really knowing. One of my favourite students (really cool kid for a 15y/o) plays with them and would complain about them to me on occasion.
>>
>>57951565
Well first and foremost I think that the best teachers are the ones that actually care about their students, both on an academic and personal level. Personal relationships are one of the most important factors for effective teaching, especially with disengaged kids. I'm a pretty likeable guy and my schtick is generally not getting angry with kids, just disappointed (except when they do stupid shit and they need a raised voice to show I'm really serious).

You need to be patient, don't have too much of an ego and be in control of your emotions. I'd say that confidence is also very important, especially if you're working with teenagers because they can smell weakness and will exploit it and try to make you angry/upset/uncomfortable/whatever. A lot of that can be learned on the job and over time though.

Being quick on your feet, problem solving and time management are all important, but can mostly be learned on the job. However I think that spergy people who aren't good at thinking on their feet will never be great teachers. I could go on for ages and if you have questions I'm happy to answer, but in general, a compassionate person who is decent with people and has a fairly quick mind, will make a great teacher imo. Although you always need that mix of personalities in a school, you need that hard cunt on occasion.
>>
>>57942841
Base Bridgeport?
>>
>>57951659
I should also say, I work in a lower socio-economic school and with some pretty difficult students. Less confident and/or more spergy people who are very good at the content/curriculum are going to have an easier time at wealthier, more elite schools, but they're not always easy to break into. And at those schools relationships with students are still important, but behaviour management isn't as crucial as it is with more difficult students.
>>
>>57951659

I would add to this, you have to be very aware of yourself, because there is a delicate balance to keep: you want to establish positive relations, but at the same time you have to keep boundaries, because you will often be called to intervene as the authority figure. You'll likely be the only adult around most of the time, so it's on you to keep control on the dynamics of the group. The exact point of balance is going to vary from group to group and possibly from day to day, but that is the thing you're going to have to keep your eyes open.

Yep good point. You need to be mindful that you are not their friend, you are their teacher. I've seen some younger teachers (as in like 22/23) get a bit befuddled by this point. And when push came to shove, they didn't have the authority that they probably should have, and those students who they previously had a positive relationship with wouldn't listen to them at all.

And yeah I've only been a teacher for 2.5 years now I'm still working on growing those eyes in the back of my head so I can always be in control of group dynamics and always put those fires out before they really start.

I work as a client services manager for a media company that primarily deals with YouTube talent.

It's an easy gig, but if you want to know if most YouTubers are petulant children with no concept of reality or accountability, the answer is yes. I hope that platform fucking burns.

I also do some freelance writing, and actually am at the tail end of a gig for a /tg/ related publication.

I play 5e, AD&D2e, some Warhams, and Kingdom Death.

>>
>>57956196
It's not solely about silencing the opposition, the main gripe with a lot of what people would deem hard-right media is that they fear monger and gives false or misleading information to further a cause. Now, i do not want to say that the leftist media doesn't do this, they most certainly do, but the extent to which it is done in leftist media is considerably less than "the opposition". The best policy would be to simply have a quality control type of organization which roots out poor journalism and removes those journalists who are giving out misinformation on both sides. Something like a health inspector but for the media.

>>57956500
What you don't seem to understand is that there is no objective standard for other people's opinions. In matters of public policy, ie "politics", there is no right or wrong answer as there is in food inspection, health statistics or factory quality control. It is all a matter of morality and subjective opinion. Any organization claiming to be absolutely objective is lying...and is soon captured by one group of partisans or another, and used as a propaganda weapon (cf. Twitter's "Trust and Safety Council", now an Orwellian censorship engine).
>>
>>57956254
he was alluding to the streisand effect
>>57956500
are you unironically advocating for a Ministry of Truth? Jesus christ lad.
>>
>>57956577
No, I do understand that. Which is why the organization shouldn't be associated with any sort of opinion. Instead, it should deal with misinformation and the distribution of things which are factually incorrect. One might also put on quality control things like sources, proper quoting and not taking these sorts of things out of context. These practices make good journalism regardless of the statements or opinions contained within them. One would just have to watch out for corruption within the inspection department and since it isn't an actual health administration, they would most likely not have the power to just shut down parts of the media but would mostly likely only need to the power to levy fines based on grievances.
>>

I'll argue until the cows come home that organizations like Breitbart shouldn't be given a platform to spew bigotry and hate, but any government which would silence its populace simply for voicing dissent or exert control over whose opinions the people were allowed access is a government which should not exist.

>>57956890

Various games, used to play/run 40k RPGs a lot, where Administarutum was truly terrifying organization, to the point many PCs prefered fighting daemons to dealing with Administratum.
Also DnD (2e->3.5e->5e) for high fantasy (also stealing a lot from Exalted), WFRP 2e for grittier fantasy, oWoD for modern games (though I also love Dark Ages) and FFG Star Wars for sci-fantasy. Believe it or not, there's a large subset of the population who share the idea espoused by this guy, though I doubt his is genuine, being on a board about traditional gaming. It's a traditional viewpoint among older fellows that value skills that produce tangible results over more abstract concepts, and something growing up I held pretty dear as well.

People with that viewpoint though often forget that even though that sort of thought is rooted in a good place (You should be able to produce something of value no matter how rough life gets, so in harsh times when the common man can't justify spending money on entertainment or arts, you can still provide for yourself and your family), it also forgets that the arts are also intrinsic to human life even if it can't be quantitatively defined.

>Caring about your students
>Ever
I mean, if you don't care about teaching them anything, sure.

If you actually want to educate them you gotta drop the Stand and Deliver bullshit. Other countries aren't beating American students because they love on their own. Building relationships with your students is the worst form of self-flattery. It's a way for you to feel good about yourself, to indulge in a misplaced paternal role, than in a teaching role. I wouldn't say this if I didn't see it every day. I see teachers behave exactly as you describe yourself to be: caring, kind, focused entirely on "building relationships" with their students but accomplishing literally nothing academically.

Best of luck, dude. Difficult students don't need your love, they need you to write them referrals and be honest with them about their idiot behavior. Works way better than keeping PB&J in your desk and trying to manipulate them with sweet talk.
