I know more than anyone.
It takes a long, long time to begin with (four novels to become half-human, six to become human) and even when she has a human shape, she's still a spider on the inside. She still has eight "eyes", sleeps in a web, and eats people.
>>
>>59746224
Make one spider stand against waves of evil invader I guess.
But spider people don't have to be stuck in their original ways, I mean humans are not hunter-gatherers anymore. Though my personal setting has spiderfolk having to struggle against their anti-social instincts, which could be seen as heroic in itself depending on the way they do it and how you depict it.

I actually played a campaign that was kind of like this. We had set up our backstories beforehand and I set up a connected one with another player. They played a drow ex-prince who was dridered for falling in love with my character, a low-class servant. The prince retained most of his personality through sheer force of will but was in constant pain, and my character was wracked by constant guilt and suicidal inclinations because of their part in his torment, and only stayed their hand for the sake of their love. Needless to say the two were really fucked up. Anyway through a dramatic series of events they ended up joining the rest of the party as allies of convenience, at least at first, and at the beginning they didn't mesh well at all with the other characters. The party originally believed it was just because they were dickish drow, but after the cleric snooped on them as saw my character desperately try to comfort and ease the pain of the prince during a moment of weakness, and some backstory exposition, they came to realize that it was a combination of drow dickishness and them dealing with the stress of their current situation. This motivated them to try and help the two overcome their various shortcomings and weaknesses in a series of side-quests that also taught the drow the values of charity and friendship and those other good people values. Their back and forth was also super cute in a sad way, with my overprotective character constantly trying to amend for their existence by being as helpful and available as possible and the prince desperately trying to retain their dignity and grit their way through the pain while keeping my character from jumping off a cliff during one of their episodes.

Pic related because when their Tragic Backstory was unveiled it was actually the normally stoic barbarian who got all teary-eyed because they lost their wife and know what its like to feel responsible for a tragedy.

You know, around many parts of the world, there are stories of heroic and helpful spiders. We have the benevolent trickster Anansi in West Africa, the cloud weaving spiders in Japan, Auntie Tarantula from the American Southwest natives who taught them weaving, and the Christmas spiders in the Ukraine who spun a silk blanket for the baby Jesus, just to name a few. Also, in Wales a spider in the house is a sign of good luck.

Yeah, it's actually quite likely where we got the whole tinsel on the tree thing from. In the Ukraine it's common to decorate a Christmas tree with little ornamental spiders and webbing.

There's also a story from there about a kind farming family who didn't have money for Christmas presents, so the spiders spun their webs on their tree, and when Christmas morning came, the webbing became silver and gold.

Does this really need to be asked? because there is nothing intrinsically heroic or admirable about a creature that lurks in darkness until you inevitably fall into its trap where it will slowly tie you up, inject you with acid, and then drink your melted insides, the entire process taking hours.potentially having venom that can kill things far larger than itself and devouring its own mates also dont help the spiders cause.

It's built off an instinctual fear, which means that our ancestors had reason to be afraid of spiders.

To put it simply, the children that played with or were okay with spiders would die, because they would be bitten by a recluse or widow or something along those lines. And those that were afraid of spiders would live, as they would instinctively attack the spiders the second they see them.

Even if you view spiders as household bros, they're still creepy to most people. Most animals we react negatively to are the result of millennia of instinctual evolution -- and we seem particularly opposed to anything that deploys a venom.

The manga hasn't reached it yet, it's from the web novel. Quite a ways later, after she's crossed paths with adventurers who wander the labyrinth, a squadron is sent in to exterminate "the unusual spider monster" and she kills them in self defense. She finds them amazingly tasty and profitable. It's just before she leaves the labyrinth.
For a short time after she still finds humans to be quite edible, but eventually she comes across another reincarnated human and immediately stops preying on people, at least unless they attack her first.

I love spiders so if there are sentient spiders I won't make them evil, just a bit uncanny as compared to human standard they are a tad creepy, especially id they are hundreds of meter tall
For instance a proeminent god npc that pop up regularly is a giant spider who took a liking upon humans, he also mimicked their trading culture and is generally an honest and nice trader; his God-Silk is a prized items and some says that it its presence that keep people metaphorically bonded to their friends and family
One of the godess of luck form is a small crystal spider, a sharp eye might notice it sometimes, often in gambling places, it's often a sign that you should( or should not, no one is really sure) push your luck

do we ever see her human form? manga seemed promising after reading this thread, but it's just another isekai with video game rules.

The manga hasn't reached it an it's a long, long ways off, but the LN has shown her, yes.
>it's just another isekai with video game rules.
It ends up justifying that way more than most, at least.

Reposting things from an old thread:

Aranean, spiderfolks in nerubian body-type. Coming from mostly non social species, they had to be uplifted to civilisation. They have a myth that is basically the fall from Eden with Eden being a metaphor for the animalistic state of their race before being "burdened" by right and wrong. Many spiderfolks are still savage beasts and are respected (or even revered in the case of some traditional shamanistic beliefs) as such, but those who have been "civilised" can't really go back (some still tries though). "Civilised" spiderfolks have to live in communities and so have to restrain their instincts. They do that by living in a strict and rigid caste system. Proponents of the new ways tried to valorise this as dedication and to denigrate the longing for wildness, but the old ways are resilient and cultures are permeated by this nostalgia for what they see as primordial innocence.
Proponents of the new ways tend to be authoritarian, but somehow are a voice of reason against the bestial tendencies of their kind.

Moulting is another source of beliefs, symbolising change of life and time. Some old legal customs may count time in moultings (you may be forgiven some offences when you're "born anew"). Some believe old molted exoskeletons should be destroyed or cleansed to truly go on in life, some superstitions involve your past life haunting you in the empty shell of your past molts (and some magical practices actually give credibility to such beliefs). Others actually use molted exoskeletons as material: social spiders use it as a construction materials, some warrior subcultures use moult-armours, weapons, or tools, bards may use molted instruments to honour or invoke its original wearer.
It also gave birth to a cyclic cosmology, where the world itself molt anew.

anyone who's modus operandi for dealing with her enemies is to airdrop widows and recluses on them is a villain by default.
no PR team in the world could change that.

I really want to read the novel of Kumo but not the web novel.
Is there somewhere I can download it for free? Does it differ much from the web novel?

Only the first two light novels have been translated to english, and they only cover what the manga has so far (up to the Fire Dragon Rendo fight). The differences from the webnovel is the same as in the manga, so in other words, so far only the inclusion of the dragon egg in the beginning.
Changes occur later down the line around volume 4 and onward, since Kumo stays in her Arachne form much longer for the LN.
Still, here's an upload of the ebooks.

I forgot to add, just, don't expect much from Yen Press. They're not the best translators really. It's kinda stale. But it's still easier to read than Turbo's not-quite-english translation, I suppose..
Spider for luck.

I don't think it's hate. But to my knowledge spidey is kind of the "ascended fanboy" of the group. Do you want to be the only person in the plane with a hyperactive teenager that probably has a poster of you in his room? Everybody is probably thinking "he will ask nonstop questions the entire flight and I already have a headache."

Peter hasn't been a teenager for a long time in the 616 comics. Though you could argue he still acts like one.
