What decks do you think are almost competitively viable but not quite there yet? What would it take to get them there?
>>
100% on board for legacy becoming part of this thread and I don't even play it.
>>
Best (coolest) modern deck is easily Blue Steel.
Best (coolest) legacy deck is DDFT (fucking RIP).
>>
>>60789468

Most people are. I don't play.legacy much either but I like having them around because their perspective on things is interesting. I also feel bad that their generals are really slow and die quickly. I think some thread mixing can be a good thing here
>>
What use does best format have for a dead format?
>>
>>60789533
They can keep each other safe from standard and legacy can talk to modern about how they feel bad about rising prices and how to not become a dead format like them
>>
>>60789324
for legacy it's enchantress
for modern probably ponza right now, it's gotten a bit worse with lots of hand disruption and extra fast decks

We just need either a one-drop hasty boy in W/U or a Talisman of U/R.

People play Gisela in vintage Oath of druids to not die to dredge otks, but isn't it better to play elderscale wurm? If he makes exactly 20 tokens with bridge and then dredge returns flame-kin zealot you're still dead with Gisela on board.
I don't think the double damage is that much of an upside.

>>
>>60790870
I agree. Fraying Sanity helped really boost the deck, but it still needs a small bit more.
>>
Werewolves is two cards away.
>>
>>60791819
Possibly.

I sometimes test decks on XMage against the bot and when I have it play an RG Werewolves deck it wins a surprising number of games.
>>
Is it dumb to buy cards for your sideboard just in case you might use them one day? I've got plenty of cards for Burn I've never used but I've bought them just in case the meta shifts.
>>
>>60792332
You should always have all the possiblle or at least all the major SB cards ready for a meta shift imo.
>>
>>60792332
Not if they’re good SB cards. The staples, in other words. Never hurts to have some Rest in Peace or Stony Silence for example even if you don't have any white decks currently. Just be sure to keep in mind that prices for SB cards might drop with reprints so don't buy any really expensive ones before you actually use them. But picking up stuff like, I don’t know, Relic or Ancient Grudge or something if you can do so for a decent price and don't own it already is definitely not dumb.
>>

I'm gonna be streaming a league with a DDFT list later today
>>
>>60789324

>modern
ub fairies. engineered plague or dread of night would make the humans matchup not unwinnable, and would make the deck good.

>legacy
i woulda said goblins before, but the drs ban actually made the deck viable again. now id say some kinda merfolk deck. merfolk used to prey on blue decks, but dnt just does it better now since the deck can do everything now (thalia/containment priest for combos, brightling to crush fair decks).
>>
>>60790236

It's the same autistic poorfag who spergs out everytime someone mentions legacy. just ignore him since he thinks everyone who disagrees with him is some large conspiracy whereas ppl are just sick of his faggotry.

>>
Is there a good resource for buying magic cards locally? I know I can go to my closest game shop, but is there a way to see what places near by have which cards?
>>
>>60797531
Not unless your LGS has an online shop or something. I mean you realize they would have to catalogue all their cards, right?

Anyway, most ones have entire boxes full of cards though so just write down from what expansion(s) your cards are and what rarities they have and then go look through those boxes.

Modern: I saw a cool UW Miracle list but it just seems so clunky without all the Legacy-legal cantrips. Some way of getting cards out of the hand without shuffling like See Beyond or having to resolve a JTMS would do the trick

E-Tron has both the upside of Tron in that you can just luck into T3 Tron and slam a Karn (which is usually a two-of in the main deck) or something equally nasty as well as the upside of Eldrazi Tribal where you go Temple, Temple, (I-)Thought-Knot Seer on turn 2 into Smasher on turn 3. Blood Moon is also less of a problem for E-Tron than for regular Tron since you can still play your Ballista or (post-sideboard) Wurmcoil Engine as well as any of your spells if you play a Mind Stone or Wastes. Also, there is a mainboard out to Blood Moon in All Is Dust.

Combo match-ups are also better for E-Tron than regular Tron thanks to the mainboard playset of Chalice.

>>
>>60807716
well DS plays 4 DS, and maybe 4 of both tasigur and gurmag. With bauble, thoughtscour, street wraith, and sometimes another cantrip plus snap, hitting your threats should be super consistent unless youre unlucky. Even Kcommand can rebuy threats. Temur Battlerage on DS or gurmag is really strong and can win while you have a window or race some of the faster decks

Play it in a Battle of Wits deck. Use it to make fun piles like:
• Eternal Witness, Unburial Rites, [Griselbrand/Elesh Norn/Iona], Faithless Looting
• Eternal Witness, Battle of Wits, Kiki-Jiki, Restoration Angel
• Eternal Witness, Primeval Titan, Scapeshift, Bring to Light
Or any combination of these.

It’s basically “Combo Wins: The Deck”.
>>
>>60810805
What that anon said has no bearing on whether or not E-Tron is playable. Yes, regular Tron is currently probably better situated in the meta but that does not mean that you cannot win with E-Tron still.

RG Eldrazi is good, too, but it isn’t really my kind of deck, personally. Too much focus on aggro for my tastes.

Coco.

Completely disagree. It's a 1 power creature without flash for 2 mana. It makes your deck far more vulnerable to removal.

I don’t know about that. Dropping mausoleum wanderer -> T2 supreme phantom basically guarantees it’ll survive till turn 3 for you to drop a drogskul. It’s felt a lot better than dropping a second rattlechains or selfless spirit after I already played one, too.

>Blood Moon is also less of a problem for E-Tron
What? Have you played G Tron? The deck runs 4-5 basics, has postboard Nature's Claims, and is also running those same mainboard Ballista's in addition to mainboarding Wurmcoils, all while having a much more efficient engine for finding lands to make sure they can still hit 6-8 mana.
Blood Moon only becomes a problem for G Tron if the opponent has a very fast clock; something a lot of modern players just mindlessly slamming it turn 2-3 seem to fail to realize.
>>
>>60813861
>>60813871

Ah, forgot about summoner's pact. That's cheeky.

Also, why do people say amulet titan is complicated? Seems straight-forward to me: Ramp into good shit, use amulet to make a shit load of mana with the bouncelands, use titan to fetch out whatever utility lands you need, then win. But then I've never played against it or with it.

That's 6 mana. The pacts allow you to just play the hivemind for 6 and then on the same turn immediately cast a pact.
Plus, the blue and green and black pacts are just good cards that the deck can play on the earlier turns of the game to just use them as intended. So they pull double duty. It's a strong deck.

>>
>>60815158
RG Eldrazi has one.
>>
>>60815480
>it is also green
AGAIN, THE FUCKING POINT OF HYBRID MANA IS TO SHOW WHERE THE HYBRIDIZED COLORS OVERLAP. A CARD WITH A HYBRID MANA COST IS SUPPOSED TO FUNCTION AS A MONOCOLOR OF EITHER OF ITS HYBRID COLORS, AND DEATHRITE SHAMAN IS THUS FUNCTIONALLY A MONOBLACK MANA DORK. YOU DO NOT NEED GREEN TO PLAY IT OR ACTIVATE ITS MANA ABILITY.
>>
>>60815480
If you can perform the actions I described, then it is functionally a black mana dork. If you can cast him with a basic swamp, and use him alongside 2 basic swamps to cast a turn 2 Geralf's messenger, then he is functionally a black mana dork. A black mana dork exists in magic the gathering.

Him being hybrid mana doesn't change anything I just said.

Any legacy anons familiar with Spanish Inquisition? The thread on thesource says that PSI has something like a 60% turn-one kill rate (against a FoW-less goldfish of course), but I've been goldfishing it for several weeks and can't seem to get above 30%. It doesn't help that litterally 40% of my attempts (sample size over 1000) are initial 7 that can't turn 1 (no business or not enough mana for business), mull to 6 same deal, mull to 5 same deal, and so on. How can there be a 60% T1K rate if 40% of the time you whiff before the first turn even starts, and half of the actual attempts end up whiffing too?

Veteran explorer's death trigger allows you to search your deck for two untapped basic lands and put them into play. you have plenty of ways to do this, from the flashback trigger on cabal therapy (cabal therapy is mind crush without the drawback i you wiff, and you get to cast it from the GY if you tribute a creature) to demonic intent to phyrexian tower.
and gsz allows you to cheat out creatures for massive value

So I'm a casual fuck with a casual fuck playgroup, I've mostly been playing EDH and spending money on that the last few years but my group is getting back into casual 60 cards with just the basic rule "don't be a dick". Sure, you can play Sol Ring, or Necropotence, just don't put 4 of them in your deck.

So my old decks aren't holding up anymore but I noticed a lot of great cards from Standards past have gone down in price so I want to rebuild some of my decks. Picked my 1998 white weenie for starters. Won't bother with the complete list, the idea is to do very pure and righteous white stuff with knights and angels and swords to plowshares and crusades. Here's what I'm thinking of as a base:

4x Honor of the Pure
4x Swords to Plowshares

2-4x Mother of runes
Then any good, aggressive knights or such in the 1 and 2-drop slots.

Resto angels are cheap as fuck now, maybe throw in some Knights of the White Orchid and other decent ETBS in the previous slots to exploit that? Blade Splicers even though it's a flavor fail?

2x Avacyn the Purifier since it's gone down so much in price.

Help me figure out the details here. There's always the possibility of going with knight or human synergy all the way, I don't usually do tribal but I could be convinced.

You might as well just look at the core of dnt and buy the most budget cards of it since you like monowhite decks. Take a look at this and see what you want to take away from it. It also helps the deck is tier 1 in legacy again.

https://www.mtggoldfish.com/archetype/legacy-death-and-taxes-21908#paper

p.s. I wish stoneforge was modern legal so i can jam it in mardu pyro and bant eldrazi.
>>
>>60820631
Aw yeah I guess I forgot to specify: budget IS a constraint, I'm fine buying 10$ cards but overall I'd rather not spend more than 200$ (before lands) on a deck. Also we often play multiplayer so aggro white would be an underdog to begin with; DnT even more so I feel like.

That said I totally fucking love DnT and it's the deck I'd build if I played serious Legacy.
>>
>>60820700
>>60820436
I play a bunch of casual and aquire all my cards through prereleases and trading. Its a ton of fun to build niche strategies and it keeps the power level fair. You need the right friends though
>>
>>60820700

In that case, id slowly build up the pieces since they are some of the best cards you can use in white. Thalia and stoneforge are used in every white deck that isnt miracles, and would make your budget deck way stronger as you slowly build up into DnT one day. of the cheaper pieces, mirran crusader and thalia are great and under 10 bucks each.
>>
>>60820323
Budget Pyromancer is okay. All you need are four bedlam revelers, four young pyromancers, and four lingering souls as the core of the deck and that's super cheap, then just throw in any instants and sorceries that catch your fancy

Yeah I will build up to it but my immediate concern is in building a white deck that can play at a casual table and stand up on its own in a multiplayer environment.

This is what I'm thinking about so far, I'm just drunkenly putting cards together at this point. Would you play Mirran Crusader over either of my 3-drops?

Definitely over blade splicer. Double strike benefits far more from your +1/+1 effects than a 3/3 first strike golem and a 1/1 since it also has pro green/black, letting you attack through fatties and dodge common black removals.

'aight. My last thought is in ditching at least 1 or 2 resto angels for Heliods since my devotion game strong. Not really sure though, as a Commander player I've been underwhelmed by Heliod whenever I've played him.

4 Shard Volley: Total Memery? I recently played against a burnchad who actually did it

Diminishing returns on multiples; however, running 1 Shard Volley is tangentially one more Bolt

Trying a turbo version of heartless myr tomorrow, wish me luck.

What matchup is submerge for? Maybe also trim Corrupter. Teferi's Response seems pure meme.

this u/w control player had a cryptic in hand and played a spreading seas on turn 2, but still lost on turn 4.

https://youtu.be/A0ttTGeI0bk?list=PLXvWVmmqyaqhMHS5_YQ9ZD9mKb_lP2Vzl

This ponza player got his mana acceleration, played multiple stone rains, had a turn 3 inferno titan, and still died on turn 5-6 both games he lost (starts at 01:13:24).

https://www.twitch.tv/videos/279760551

What should these players have done differently? They came prepared to fight tron with specific cards (spreading seas) or entire deck strategies (ponza) and still just got walked over easily by tron. In neither case, did they have bad draws, make mistakes, or not cast their relevant cards. I don't understand.
>>
>>60822143
submerge comes in a lot. depths, lands, all green delver variants, loam, the mirror, shardless.

response is a big meme but it's such a blowout and it's funny.
>>
>>60822300
Tron is cancer that can't be treated if they naturally draw into their shit.
>>
>>60822374
What do you bring in Null Rod against?
>>
Im on the verge of leaving legacy and just going entirely to pauper and edh. The deathrite ban was a step in the right direction. Nothing seems to have changed that much aside from delver being different. I find most of the top decks boring af. And pet decks seem to STILL be unplayable. I want 12post and pox to be good, but theres no reason for me not to play red prison. Lands is boring, delver ios boring, reanimator is boring and u/w control is cancer. What do?
>>
>>60822300
ponza is the shittiest deck. If you get rolled over by the "lands matter" deck, then the deck sucks.
>>
>>60822412
aether vial decks, stoneforge decks, storm, belcher, eldrazi
>>
>>60821528
Yo I had the same hazedream of turbo heartless too man, then i faced a bro on cocka with similar package and now here I see this.
Post list at your leisure pls

My druginduced vision was of 4 heartless 4 retriever 4 trawler 2-4 foundry inspector 2-4 altar and 1-2 Gate to the afterlife, with maybe 1 Gift, and 1-4 KCIs, with 4 Hangarback 4 Ballista.

Maybe some Mox and Darksteels or some sort of Egg(s) for your KCI loops or more weirdo creatures for Heartless

Tron is cancer
>>
>>60820259
UR storm is still Tier 1
>>
>>60822300
ponza isn't good vs tron because it preys on decks that play 19 to 22 lands, sweepers to kill small creatures, and threats that are much worse than tron threats. Tron plays 24 lands, a boatload of land tutors and cantrips, and threats ponza can't deal with or race. Its a shit matchup for ponza, but modern is so diverse that every deck has at least one shit matchup
UW control answers creature heavy decks, and tries to win while in control. Tron never gives up control, and doesn't give itself to enough disruption that UW can play. Tron is also fast enough that UW can't provide pressure to make the disruption pay off.

People seem to think if they stop someone from getting tron for a turn then they'll easily win. People are stupid.

Tron assembles itself pretty easily without even trying and can recover from losing a piece pretty easy because "oh no you killed my piece, nnnnnooojust kidding it's time to map/sylvan scrying to get a new one". You'd need something like pic related to really, actually shut tron off. Really I'm surprised I don't see it more often.

People should be more interested in preparing for dealing with what they cast, not delaying them a turn from casting it because, unless you're Burn and drew all the bolts you needed, when you spent your own turn merely to.. buy yourself a turn, if you did little or no damage with that extra turn you aren't actually doing much at all to affect the outcome and that's what we're seeing here.

I'll also say it, spreading seas is nice, in fact I like it, but for the critical space for slots it's nowadays a meme card, miracles UW is much nicer. Terminus doesn't give a fuck about wurmcoils or ulamogs.

Not after I pilot it it won't be.
I will make Caleb quit the deck in disgust.

Yeah I think I'm gonna build storm. Seems fun and pretty cheap. Never played combo before.
>>
>>60825160
Dampening Sphere and Amulet of Safekeeping just got printed in consecutive sets. I would wait a few months to see if the meta shifts a little or something
>>
>>60825160
Modern Storm has really 2 main lines. But there's like a million non intuitive lines too where you're setting up a win the next turn or the turn after. Takes a little bit of learning to really master it.
>>
>>60825541
>Amulet of Safekeeping
Does literal shit to storm, litterally care about it less than a cage or any other light hate. Dampening Sphere on the other hand, that shit pisses me off, really hard to go off without an ascension and you can't always tell when you need to bring them in. Or you get lucky by drawing your echoing truth/repeal.
