To be honest the whole 'raging against the dying of the light' schtick never really worked for the Imperium.
So as someone who's a beginner in this hobby I've been learning about a lot of new techniques but I'm not entirely sure where to apply themFor example, I'm painting my space marines rn. I'm going to wash them for shading, do some dry brushing to create some reflection patterns/contrast and then edge highlight. Should I do more than that? I think that's a very good thing for beginners to practice because it makes your flat panels, much much smoother, but also trains your precision with a brush in an easy way. Once you've got layering down you can start looking at feathering(the more complex form of layering) gradients, as well as things like recess shading.

>>96987503Well if you want to sell volumetrics you need smooth transitions so you'll have to blend by glazing, layering or wet blending. Look these up on sloptube, Vince Venturella is a pretty solid teacher. These are fairly advanced techniques though, they look easy in videos but require a decent amount of practice to get right. I don't know what exact level you're at but I'd recommend painting a couple models with the GW method first to get some brush control and understand the basics. Duncan Rhodes is a good guy for that.

Get three shades on your wet palette, start each area by blobbing in a rough highlight (larger than you eventually want) and paint the next colour brushing always from inside the area you just painted, towards the next following the direction of the gradient. Never a perpendicular line. Cheat at layering by letting the wet paint mix a little.

All the same basic rules apply.It's only diffucult if you're buying crappy paints for it (Scale 75 gels, pre-thinned vallejo junk) or trying high contrast styles like non-metallic metal right out of the gate. Blending a light green down to a less light green to give some shape to a marine shoulder pad is easy.

When I first bought the battle force back in 2015, I had a can of stone-effect texture spray paint that was a mix of teal and grey and black and such, and I just sprayed a bunch of bases with that stuff. Then I got too busy with work and forgot all about 40k until after I retired a year ago. Since then, that spray paint was discontinued and I couldn't find anything similar, so other units have been different attempts to replicate it by hand. Mostly it's actually Americana craft paint "Bluegrass Green" and Folk Art "Calypso Sky" in various mixes. Otherwise, such as on these succubae, it's just speed paint lizardfolk cyan over a white/ivory drybrush

>>96988316On those Incubi, iirc, I smeared white glue, added green flock and grit, brushed Vallejo white primer all over which tinted green as it leeches dye out of the flock, then I slathered it with speed paint Burnt Moss, then dry brushed it with Americana Calypso Blue prior to adding the ooze with fluro paint and clear gloss.
