or those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

New Due Date 10/31

Frame Arms Group Build

This time the idea is to build any Frame Arms, or Frame Arms Girl kit, and paint and customize it.

The rules are overall pretty simple, the base must be recognizable as FA or FA Girl, other than that there's no limit on what you can do.

Due Date: October 31st

Note: This is a prize build, there will be a prize provided by me, there will also be a mystery prize provided by another anon. That means that to enter, I need WIP pictures submitted before the due date. Simply email me some pictures of you working on it, I don't care at what point, as long as it's possible to tell where your final product came from.

Prize Pack:
MSG Free Style Bazooka
MSG Impact Knuckle
MSG Beast Sword
MSG Assault Rifle #2
Miscellaneous supplies

I'm probably going to add more, but I'll let those be a secret.

Email: gunplasecretsanta@gmx.us

I'm also available via IRC and Steam

Secret Santa is here!

Because there's some confusion, you sign up for your price range, both what you receive and what you send out (or drop ship).

Also shipping is not factored into the survey.

I'm starting the sign up a bit earlier than normal this year. As usual, fill out the form below, and if you have any questions shoot me an email at gunplasecretsanta@gmx.us

Sign ups end November 15th.

I'm currently debating buying either MG Zaku Cannon or the new P-Bandai HG. I feel like I'd get better poseability and bang for my buck with the MG, but the colors, decals, and surface detailing are so nice on the HG. Both come out to around the same price-ish after shipping. Someone sway me in one direction or the other please.

The Zaku 2.0 frame is probably the best inner frame Bandai's ever made, and it'll be a while until proto Cannon actually ships out. On the other hand, the 2.0's tubing is supposed to be nightmarish, and Origin Zakus are also fun builds.

>>
>>6565523
Then you just ask to see a picture, the extra shit like 'so we can check for problems' and 'don't post from your phone' aren't needed.

I hope he doesn't post his build and just enjoys it regardless what you want.
>>
>>6565432
Well, i went from HGs to MGs pretty quickly. Maybe he just likes the extra work and detail.
>>
>>6565550
The jumps between grades is no where as great as people try and make it out. It makes more sense to practice on some cheaper HG kits to know what you are doing before you ruin something more expensive but in the end the required skills are exactly the same so let people waste their money how they see fit.
>>
>>6565554
I agree. It's actually easier to make an MG look good. At the same time it's harder to make an HG or SD look great.

Anyone can put together a PG, but few people can make an HG win a competition.
>>
>>6565102
MG is actualli accurate and not half assed like the HG.

Seriously, they couldn't finish the it and just left the normal zaku II lower legs? The fuck

I wonder how they'll fuck up the Zaku Desert type if they make it
>>
>>6565537
>>6565543
>>6565523
I may have come off as a bit needlessly harsh, my apologies. My first couple kits were nubby and trash, I'm not saying anon's are necessarily going to be but it's likely because some newbies don't notice or don't have the tools for it. I'm not saying I'm superior as I've still got other issues with my models, just that I think look at the model to help anon could be useful.
>>
>>6565432
I know it's already been said, but there's not any more complexity to a bigger kit than a smaller one. It's just a longer process. It's really not a big deal. I started out building 1/100 Wing/X kits then MGs.

Frankly smaller kits are more complex, and RGs are the most fiddly and easy to break in the process due to all the small pieces you can lose track of.
>>
The System Base is pretty damn nice. It's fair cheap, too.
>>
>>6565432
Not sure why going straight to MG is a bad thing. It's not like Gunpla is super hard, even with PG. But yeah for PG's prices you'll want fully paint/customise it. However MG are fine even with just panel lines done.
>>
>>6565805
There is nothing wrong with it. I got 20 MG's before I got my first HG.
>>
>>6565805
Nothing is wrong with it. If someone wants to dive straight into a PG or RG then they are welcome to. I hope anons friend does a great job at his PG.
>>
>>6565805
It's more just a matter of making rookie and learning mistakes on a kit that costs 10 dollars rather than one that costs 40-50.
>>
>>6566302
Yep. That's been said. However if someone is aware of the grade differences and still decide they want the more expensive one then it's all on them.
>>
I have a few questions.

I've just got into airbrushing, and I've done two kits with it. I'm using all acrylics (valejo primer, tamiya colors/gloss/matte topcoat). How do I fix these problems?

>Sprayed flat color looks amazing and matte coat just turns it duller and less saturated
>If I gloss, then matte something, it looks drastically different than if I just matted it - how do I not have this happen but also panel line?
>Sometimes my pieces look/feel dusty after being matte topcoated, am I overspraying or thinning?

Also I just got a single bottle of vellejo's mecha color, do I need to thin it? The guy at the store said no.

MG you have a choice of single or rabbit ears antenna (and they're freely interchangeable), the backpack and waist rifles can be removed, and it comes with a machine gun, bazooka, heat hawk, and LOTS of dry transfers for all those delicious MSV markings.
>>6565106

God, finally got home after spending almost 7 hours at the department store where they are hosting the event.
Spent almost 2 hours in line just to get to the entry and not mention the constant light shower rain.

There is a 11:00am entry for people who won a meeting session with Okawara and for 30 people who willing to wait over night in line in person.
A 1:00pm entry is for the 300 (or 500?) people who won the early entry and opening ceremony through Premium Bandai.

I got confused with the online instruction and thought you can wait in line for the 1:00pm entry and ended have to wait for the 5:00pm opening.

>>6566949
All locational HGUC exclusives and normal HGUC exclusives are based on their latest version. So the clear version and TMDC are "revive". Not the 30th ann edition.

The TMDC version has the blue part in grey so you can't build a normal 78 out of it and it comes with the exclusive stickers. I really not sure the stickers warrant the 300% price jump.

The MG is about 62 usd.

Even though the rule says only 5 max TMDC item person, but you got plenty of Scalpers going around with tens and more MG and HG. (Yes they are scalpers, there is no reason for some one buying 20 of the TMDC HG and MG.)

The event last until 11/1. But the guy in charge of the cashier counter pretty much said he doesn't believe the popular TMDC items (the single HG/RG/MG) would last until tomorrow.

I might drop by sometime when I got a day off during weekday to see whether to pick up the clear version HGUC MK2 or not. really wishing they have it in the original black.

Common issue is because of how much upper body weight it has it stresses the waist peg, the newer animation version (after the ver.ka) uses a softer plastic over the stronger stuff to allow it to flex a bit, sounds stupid to say softer is better but unless you can pin the peg be very careful

I'd suggest testing paints on the runners first before giving up on lining. I'm not sure how different the coating is on the Titanium Finish kits, but I've been able to use enamel paint thinned with mineral spirits on vacmetal parts from older kits (80s and 90s) and then wipe off the excess without taking off any of the color coat or the chrome underneath it.
>>
>>6569087
The titanium coating on these kits is super thin. I use gundam panel lining markers for my kits, and wiping off the excess on a tissue will literally remove the top layer

Hey maybe someone can help me out, I used to have a bookmark for a site that sells model-size(ie 3-5mm) version of safety line tape but I can't find it.

Odds are I found it through this general so can anyone help me find it again? Thanks.
>>
>>6569094
That's because Gundam markers are alcohol based which disolves the color coat. Somehow mineral spirits doesn't affect it. I've actually used alchohol in the past to remove the color from some old Saint Seiya kits so I could paint over the bare silver chrome with my own clear paints.

Sharpies can be easier or more difficult depending on the kit and your extent of panel lining. Avoid using on metallics for the most part unless you're good at not having excess. If you're using on white or light grey pieces, alcohol prep wipes are a must to clean the excess. Also, try to find as close to 2mm extra fine size as possible

>>
>>6571344
I never cared for Daban in the first place. At least DM redesigns their shit, and puts their own spin on the MS while releasing other kits that Bandai won't. Daban basically just does straight 1:1 bootlegs with the same boxart and everything. In addition for most of them being just like 5 dollars cheaper than the real deal.

I agree, if it's true, then they're subhuman.

Final thoughts on Vallejo Mecha Color
Made for airbrush, dries well and stays true to its sturdy-after-24-hours claim.
Metallics being metallics will be much more vulnerable to being rubbed off to topcoat's of course a must, but damn do those solid colors last.
Yes, you can handbrush them, just put a few drops into a VERY small container and leave for 45-60 minutes, stirring every 15-20 minutes, and keep your brush damp as you go.
Matt Varnish is very smooth, no visible flakes, but good luck getting tape to stick to anything but broad flat surfaces. Also dust your parts at an OCD level before topcoating, if any lint-y fibers get stuck in there and stick up, you're in for a fight to yank them out.

So, here's a question I imagine has been asked hundreds of times.

I want to make a Slave Wraith.
I'll need Ground Gundam, a GM Striker, and what else? Is there any GM head with the double antenna or should I just scratchbuilt a second one and put it on the Striker head?
>>
>>6572978
Majority is Ground Gundam, the shoulders are closest to GM Striker but if you wanted to be fully accurate it might be better to modify them from a GM Kai yourself. It uses a GM Kai backpack without the beam sabre and the closest head is the GM Striker's it seems (though the Sniper II and Sniper Custom would work to some degree as well), but you're going to have to do a lot of work to make the Slave Wraith's funky quasi-Gundam head no matter what.

>>
>>6572309

5: Wait for it to cure and then take all the tape off.

>>
>>6573608
Cure it for at least 3 days. no kidding.

Also, thin it with acrylic thinner, dont use water or straight from the bottle, helps with adhesion and curing time from experience.
>>
>>6573615
Seriously? It's already pretty thin.

I'll try that though, but 3 days suck ass. I waited about a day for the mecha color version and it was good.
>>
>>6573620
I thin mine about 30-70 thinner:primer, so it isnt too much, but it was what gave me results I wanted.

Tried it straight like a lot of people do and it sprayed on a bit thick, rough and rubbery / peel off-y like you said.
>>
>>6573608

not him, but I used tamiya fine surface primer for years. Now ive switched to automotive enamel primer for plastic, its cheap as hell ($8 for 500ml), I thin it with either turpentine or tamiya x20 thinner & airbrush it on. It touch dries in an hour but I leave it overnight to cure properly. The surface is extremely durable, far more durable than any dedicated model primer ive ever used. I wouldnt go back now i'm used to that stuff.
>>
>>6573629
Can you link me to that? All I found were spray cans or auto-body versions.

I need some help. I got an air compressor free from a family friend, and I want to set it up for airbrushing gundams/models/etc. Pic related.

What do I have to keep in mind for basic use/cleaning/care, and what paints should I buy for this specifically? I heard you have to dilute them, or something like that, so I'd prefer to ask here before I do something stupid.
>>
>>6573651
Ah ok, thanks man. Is the norm to thin primer by about 30%?
>>
>>6573672

yeah thats about right, maybe even less. Its not very thick straight out of the can, i just eyeball it normally until its the consistancy of milk like any paint i'm airbrushing.
>>
>>6572245
Did you try any of the fluorescent colors? I can't find any pictures of them painted on a piece and I was wondering if they need a similar base underneath like some clear paints need to make them stand out.
>>
>>6573667
Spray water through it whenever you turn it on to make sure there's no blockages. Use acetone to clean it once you're done using it. DO NOT drop it in acetone (we're talking about the airbrush here) learn how to take it apart and make sure the pin/nozzle is always clean. Vallejo Air is a good paint for airbrushes and it's well diluted. For anything else and even some air colours you'll want to add a 1:1 or 1:2 ratio of thinning medium into the mix. Do a 1.8 to 2 bar pressure. That's plenty to push paint. You also won't need much paint. A few drops will be enough.
>>
>>6573820
>>6573667
Also I use a gravity fed cup airbrush which is all you need for models unless they're massive.

Go back to 4:3. There is no reason to use 16:9 here except to give us more blank space to scroll past. Unless you're composing a scene in 16:9 or need to show us something exceptionally wide or tall, stick to 4:3.

Remember, use what makes most sense for the task at hand.
>>
>>6574103
I know it canonically would make no sense, but I wish there would be a hi-mo Zaku kit with some sort of collapsing or sliding panels in its calves to allow for a better knee bend. That big chunk in the back just kills the joint.

>Finally open up the box

I really wish they can do something with the instruction for these special edition kits.

It is really lacking when they cost almost twice as much as the normal kits, but the only thing to show it besides the models is the nearly unkeepable box.

Can't they at least change the cover of the manual?
>>
>>6574223
They could but then the price would go up more. Would be more cost effective to get a bulk order of say 10k instruction booklets and keep some at the side to throw into future special editions as opposed to doing a smaller run of the same booklet with one change.
>>
>>6574229
That soooorta makes sense if they already have a bunch on hand, but that's making the assumption that Bandai just blindly fires off a shitload of manuals without syncing up the orders with the numbers of kits expected to be produced. I mean, maybe that's how it is, but it seems a little inefficient, especially since storage space in Japan is extremely limited and it costs money to just have thousands of surplus manuals sitting around.

Also, printing isn't like say, making molds, where you need to recoup your costs and modifying it costs a lot...printing a different cover on the manual wouldn't cost them anything but a day's worth of pay for the photographer and designer who'd make the new cover. That's still a lot of effort for a limited kit that is probably produced in very small numbers though. And ultimately, that's probably the REAL reason you don't get a custom manual. It's just not worth the effort to them.
>>
>>6574174

the sad thing is those are more likely to happen before we get an EX-s 2.0, The-O 2.0 or a Dom 2.0.
>>
>>6574232
I don't mean they print a large amount of manuals but very few kits. I imagine as they produce a kit, they have expectations for expected sales/amount in the first run so they order enough to cover that. With kits they know they will be doing second runs of or special editions they might order extra to save printing off another run of booklets for a second release that is expected to shift less overall units. 10k booklets wouldn't actually take up an awful lot of space either, especially if they went through half in their first run.

It's hard to judge the printing costs without knowing if they print in house or through another company.
In house would change things quite a lot, but with any outside company it tends to be a higher run costs less per unit. There is things to consider like paper cost, setting up each machine for the new file, does it get auto folded/if so running through that machine. (some printers can print and fold so might be a non issue) A new file would be in a sense be downtime for a printer so they might charge more for a run of say 5k compared to 10k +
But you do bring up a solid point, it's a lot of effort for very little pay off to do a new image on the front.

Would be interesting to see the process for the packaging and who handles that.

I have & use all the vallejo model colour fluorescent paints, looking at the colour chart for mecha colour they're most likely exactly the same paints with a different label. If i airbrush them over a white base they look really intense, but they definitely have slight translucent properties so if you start with a slightly darker base then try to highlight with them, they dont do much at all. So to use them effectively, you need to do the whole piece in the fluorescent colour over white, then airbush the darker shades over the top. It definitely doesn't work the other way round.

Saw a discussion about painting eyes a couple of threads ago but didn't pursue it.
How do you guys get a glowing effect on the eyes?
>>
>>6574355
Paint the back of the clear part silver, paint the eye a clear color, and then gloss coat it, I use pledge. And then fill in the black around the eyes

Pic is from when I painted my MG Gundam 3.0 quite a while back.
I painted the eyes clear orange, the area around the eyes black, then cut out some leftover silver from RG Exia's sticker sheet to use behind the eyepiece.

It reflects lights perfectly, no fussy LED trickery needed.

So what's going on with the gundam ibo releases? There seems to be a steady stream of p-bandai kits coming out, most recently the gereil scharfrichter, with a set of dainsleif graze and iok's graze somewhere on the horizon. Is it just going to be p-bandai stuff from now on or can we look forward to a third range/wave of ibo kits being released? I'd really love a vual yuhana or a gremory. If not something like the regal lily or spinner rodi.
>>
>>6574459
you using any sort of decal solution? I've been using mr mark fit and it's helped out a lot.
>>
>>6574620
its likely going to remain p-bandai until some sort of ibo event is on the horizon. I'm fine with a break since there were so many releases in the past year while other lines got less

Only micro sol, which you put on after the decal is in place. I don't think it's difficult to do them. I just feel like I need to focus a lot more than with most other tasks which makes me not want to do 20 of them in a row. So I do 5-10 at a time.

MG gyan was released at the same time as the height of 2.0 kits and has pretty much all the detail and gimmicks you could ever want in a mg gyan. Even a light up beam saber. I'm honestly having a hard time thinking of ways to improve it.

The thing about Koto kits is that the boxes tend to be way bigger than the contents; all of the runners of their TV EVA-01 fit inside an RG box, for example.

There are some of us who think 3.0-style surface detail is too much.
>>
>>6575872
Yeah, that's cool, but you've kinda had it your way for ages where UC is concerned. Previous MGs were super smooth and devoid of most surface details. Don't get me wrong, I dig that look too, but we've been looking at it for so long that I'm ready for a change.
>>
>>6575105
Oh, damn. Didn't know there was a Gyan 2.0. How the hell did I miss that?

Well, it's not technically a 2.0, since there was no 1.0...there is only one MG Gyan ever made. It just so happens that it was made around the time of the other 2.0 kits.

And yes, there are tons of great baddie MGs. Sazabi ver.Ka is probably the best of the bunch. Geara Doga, Marasai, Dom, Gouf, Gelgoog, The O, Sinanju, Qubeley...that's all I can think of off the top of my head aside from Zaku variants.

this. EX-s is a cunt to paint due to the transformation and requires a bunch of third party chinese upgrade kits to look good. The-O is a brick and desperately needs 4 beam sabers and a ver-ka remake like sazabi.

Why? The O doesn't need sliding armour gimmicks. It's overall a good model that just needs to come with an extra pair of beam sabre blades.

I need help on the flow of the weathering process. I have my base coat down, and am about to spray Future as a protective gloss onto my model. From there the process would be:
Base coat -> Gloss -> Chipping with paintbrush-> gloss -> Gunk wash with oil paints -> streaking -> Flat final coat
Or am I wrong on this? I read the guide but the wording just isn't clear enough for me.

I like to do washes on top of gloss but the traditional approach to weathering in general seems to be to do it on top of satin (semi-gloss), see image for reference.

A final flat coat can affect the weathering, not sure what it will do to oils but it can certainly upset pigments or effects done by for example the Tamiya weathering master kits.

I would point you in the direction of the scale model general for weathering advice, just don't mention it's gunpla.
>>
>>6576256
Thanks. Well, I alrady gloss coated half the model, may as well continue with the rest when I can.
