For those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

The group build has officially ended. Thanks for everyone who participated. If anyone else was working on something and was unable to finish, just email me later down the line and I'll add the pictures in.

As for the next group build, it'll probably be after Build Divers finishes airing.

Just a break down of what I used.
Primed with Alclad microfiller black then sanded to about 1000 grit.
The frame is a basic mix of Mr. hobby black and gray with some Tamiya white.
The white is Tamiya white with some added Mr. Hobby tan.
red is Mr. Gundam red with added Mr. color yellow.
Silver behind the visor is Alclad chrome.
The Visor is Mr hobby GX clear green.
for the weathering is a mix of Tamiya sand and mud pigments mixed with 70% Iso then brushed on then dried.
dark brown on the legs and feet is Mr hobby brown, tan, white, black, red mixed
top coat is Mr hobby flat spray from a airbrush.

Overall the kit took about 2 and a half weeks most of the time I was waiting on decals with about 20 hours of work total now I am trying to get my GBWC entry done since I wont have time in the next month and its due in May.

new to painting; just making sure I don't destroy the plastic, is rattlecan primer OK for 144's if I clean the pastic first? I've cut out the parts, sanded the nubs, and washed most of the pieces. Is it OK for me to just mask the pegs and holes and primer each part?

1/144s are the same plastic as 1/100, 1/60, etc. Thickness of the primer depends on what primer you're using. Hardware store stuff like krylon will obviously be thicker but still serviceable, while hobby ones like tamiya and mr surfacer will go on thinner as they are geared more towards scale models.

As always, test on some empty runner if you're worried about how it will react to the plastic.

Hey guys, huge gunpla noob here. I already made some basic gunpla. I like them, but i'm not a Gundam fan and i'm curious about other types of Plamo models. I've seen some girls w/ armors... I'm not that much into painting, so i'd like to know if there was something similar to Gunpla in the way you build it and don't have to paint it, but with other themes. Thanks a lot.

The Frame Arms and Frame Arms Girls from Kotobukiya look mostly good paint free. Gunpla is by far the lead in keeping things paint free however. Learning to panel and maybe just paint details does wonder for model kits like that.

Kotobukiya licenses out plamo for all kinds of series all the time, Bandai also branches out. Both of them try to make it look as good out of the box, but Bandai is definitely the best when it comes to it.
Dalong has a good amount of reviews up, I'd look through the Kotobukiya and Bandai ETC pages
http://dalong.net/review/kotobukiya.htm
http://dalong.net/review/etc.htm
Even then the bandai page is missing a lot of stuff like the LBX or the Pokemon kits, point is there's a lot of plamo outside of gundam
>>
>>6900528
Pretty good read, I've always felt people use "Gunpla is freedom" as a cop-out excuse for not giving a shit and not trying on their kits. Perhaps some people are just content with snapping shit and calling it a day, which is fine but they shouldn't expect much praise for doing the bare minimum work. I'd honestly rather see someone that took a horrible risk but at least tried to improve or move beyond the basics, at least there's a place for discussion and feedback there, there's nothing to say to a snapfit kit and a builder who is content with it. Even worse if they defend their complacency with these "its just a hobby", "its my kit and I do what i want with it" non-arguments.

It's a community problem, not a negative encouragement for doing the minimum problem
Other places to discuss gunpla aren't much better and I agree that r-gunpla is plain ridiculous with the ass-patting it gives out for people saying they're proud of taking 8 hours to build their first Barbatos with backwards parts and poorly applied stickers but the alternative here isn't much better
Autism and elitism will always ruin communities, even if they're really small ones dedicated to something as niche as gunpla
All that said, it's pretty petty to be mad at people for deciding for themselves how deep they want to get into a hobby or how much they care about it. It's like the videogame situation between all the casual normalfags, the "hardcore" autists and the nostalgia-goggled oldfags
Sad that gunpla is reaching that state

Me too. Cross Silhouette and G-Frame are both hugely exciting, I love that Bandai is playing around with internal frames a lot more these days. At first I was really hesitant to get excited about these because the "you have to buy two parts for one complete figure" thing seemed like such annoying bullshit, but G-Frame turned out so good I'm willing to forgive that.

I just feel really bad for anyone trying to buy these at retail and not finding complete pairs. It pretty much forced me to start buying cases even though I live near quite a few gasha/trading figure retail establishments.

I never got the whole "Sheep in search of a heard" insult. Humans are social animals, wanting to be part of a group is one of our most basic instincts and people get weird and kind of fucked in the head when they start denying that need.
>>
>>6901138
Or they're using it as an excuse to pump out a revive/evolution/whatever they're calling their marketing gimmick now. Especially since a lot of the S1 designs could share a pseudo frame/base like the IBO gundams did.
>>
>>6901264
>Humans are social animals
apes are, humans don't have to be, that's kinda the whole point of evolving beyond an animal

>most basic instincts
>denying that need
nothing's wrong with following your basic instincts, you know, fuck, eat, kill, #yolo etc and many people do, they are just usually not the best representatives of the species

repressing your instinct to crack open the head of that fucker who dissed you and repressing the instinct to search for a herd because you're sad and lonely and need approval are essentially the same and both can be resolved without regressing to an animal (unless that's your goal of course)

I wouldn't call them that. They're basically action figures, none of the parts come on sprues and there's zero work to be done aside from attaching the armor. They're more akin to like...a Metal Build than a model kit.

>>6901636
Agreed, it kind of forces you to buy cases. It's a real racket. I'm complaining less about it because of how happy I am with the figures though.

>>6901674
I miss Assault Kingdom too. It was an amazing line. But uhhh yeah, G-Frame figures are surprisingly large. Like maybe 4.5 inches tall? They're only like a head shorter than some of my smaller HGUCs, in fact. I was kinda shocked when I unboxed them because I was expecting them to be Assault Kingdom-sized.

Here's RG Astray, G-Frame Unicorn, and Assault Kingdom Rx-78-2 next to each other.

Generally speaking, what's the purpose of the Ver Ka line? What does Ver Ka mean and why do I see so many complaints about them? For example, the V2 Ver Ka looks amazing to me, but practically everyone I've asked about it has just said "Save your money."
>>
>>6902433
How about the banshee ver ka that recently came out? Been eyeing that one since i heard they fixed a few minor issues and it has some nice matte gold decals
>>
>>6902451
I don't know because I constantly forget it exists, and I don't like it because it has none of what makes Banshee cool.
>>
>>6902449
The Ver. Ka series is a market branding for products designed and produced by Hajime Katoki, one of the most influential mecha designers to emerge from the late 80s and early 90s. In the context of model kits, the Ver. Ka label refers to models he has a personal hand in overseeing its production from concept to final product.

The vast majority of Gundam models in the MG line and HGUC line even though they are not under his direct supervision follow his reference work and aesthetic design choices.
>>
>>6902449
Its because they use a lot of abs and cant pose well most of the time. They look best just standing like the box pose but the recent ver ka releases have been pretty articulated.

On a side note, i got the v2 ver ka back when it came out and loved it. The transformation is waaay easier to do then the previous victory gundam and hes pretty solid in gundam form minus the lack of waist articulation. Although the elbows kinda suck because they are c joints that dont clip on most of the time but the parts that sandwich over the joint help keep the lower arms from falling off easily
>>
noobpainting question:
after I've primered all my parts do I;
assemble then paint
assemble parts then paint individual sections
or paint then assemble?
I'm handpainting a 144 and I've seen it done all 3 ways
>>
>put together exia ignition mode
>still haven't panel lined it
>still no stickers
>still haven't even cleaned up the nib marks
>still need to detail paint it

what am I doing
>>
>>6902463
Paint then assemble, every time. Only time I would assemble then paint is if you're seam welding.
>>
>>6902456
>>6902457
So, as a rule of thumb, is it better to avoid the Ver Ka line?
>>
>>6902498
I wouldn't say to completely avoid the line. In fact, a lot of the Ver. Ka stuff is fantastic. The Hi-Nu looks amazing, the ZZ is about as close to a perfect version of that design as you can get, the Nu, Sazabi and Sinanju Stein are super cool too. It's just that the Victory, the Unicorn and a few others suffer in certain areas.
>>
>>6902484
Being figuratively me. I went on a snapping spree because I wanted to be rid of boxes and was waiting for basically everything I needed to paint, now I have a bunch of bare plastic stuff to bring up to snuff. I did at least clean my nibs though; much as I like putting things together quickly, going back to clean nubs is a pain.
>>
>>6902498
The rule of thumb is that a ver. Ka kit is going to be intricate, leggy, and have a ton of decals.
>>
>>6902484
I've been doing this a lot lately. I build a kit, get bogged down by all the panel lining and decaling, and move on to a new kit. I have like 5 kits now waiting to be decaled and lined, and it just seems like a chore sometimes. Especially when they're kits with a billion decals, like Origin kits or RGs or Ver.KAs.

>>
>>6902251
>Like maybe 4.5 inches tall?

Man that places them pretty close to MSiA scale. I was hoping that was about the size they would be when I saw these a few months ago. I think the Unicorn would be about 4.5 inches tall scaled to most MSiA (about 1/162 scale).
>>

The Ver.Ka. was the first [MG] release, and while nice, many were offput by the range-of-motion in the knees, especially when in Destroy Mode.
The OVA Version touches up the colors slightly so it's in-line with it's depiction in the animation and has different knee parts that improve their flexibility.
>>6902508
Turn A is still one of the top-tier build experiences.
>>
>>6902759
It'll look ok, but you'll want to at least panel line to bring out the details. I don't know who told you MGs don't need panel lining but they were wrong. Panel lining makes the details pop, your kit will look so much better with it.

The RX-78 3.0 is a great kit. It's a good compromise between high detail sculpt and poseability. If you want pure fantastic poseability, at the cost of a somewhat simpler look, go for the Origin RX-78-2.

I mean, look at how boring and plasticky an unlined MG looks next to its lined counterpart. All that nice sculpted detail gets lost in a sea of samey plastic.
>>
>>6902786
>>6902794
Okay yea def gonna panel line it.
I'd go with the Origin but something about it I don't really like.
And I wanna be able to do the Core Fighter gimmick.
>>
>>6902906
Nah, I get you. I really wanted the Origin cause it seemed to have neat engineering, but I too went with the 3.0, cause it just looks better. Origin has kinda weird squashy proportions, especially in the head.

The 3.0 is basically based on the 1:1 scale statue that used to be at Diver City in Tokyo.
>>
>>6902912
yeah, origin takes some getting used to because of the teeny head and big broad shoulders
>>
>>6902912

>>
>>6902906
>>6902759
It has a lot of tiny parts and can be a bit fiddly to put together and handle, but the amount of different colours straight out of the box and just general looks make up for it. My only major downside is the lack of beam javelin & hammer.
>>
Any anons here know how to intentionally add an orange peel effect to a gloss coat? I think I remember reading about spraying some sorta aerosol to evenly melt the gloss coat so it's nice and dimply but I can't seem to find it anywhere

You can search for "KiWarm building" or "KiWarm house", for example:
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/KiWarm-Modern-Scale-1-160-Grey-Miniatures-Models-Modern-Building-Dormitory-School-Layout-DIY-Scaled-Model/32844341337.html

Scales are 1/87, 1/100, 1/144, 1/150 but not every kind of building is available in every scale.

They are not as good as what Greenmax or Aoshima make but they are cheap and with some plaplate and some putty you can make them pretty realistic.

Shhh~ that part of the plan was top secret!

I think the pegs work out that I can make the head interchangable with Gyancelot's torso, but I haven't started piecing everything together to see. Based on the instructionsheet it looks like the saddle connection point is the same kind of connection point the neck uses.

This.

Realistically speaking your cloth will have to be too thin to work with and at the same time it will need to behave like it weighs hundreds to thousands of pounds so it will have to look like it is stretched pretty tight under its own weight.

Any actual cloth will make your giant robot model look like a cheap toy, no exceptions. If you want realistic looking cape, pick a pose, glue the joints, sculpt a static cape the way it would look in that pose and enjoy your statue.
