Found a deal at my local flea market. Red bin of Bionicles, most if not all are incomplete, for 20 bucks. I'd say there's 10 incomplete figures in all. Mostly a mix between G1 Bionicles and some Herofactory here and there. Is this a good deal? The most complete figure is a black Bohork. I've only recently started to get back into Lego and I really want to start playing around with Bionicle pieces again

The comic artist sure did. Semi-related, but I just recently found out I had Irnakk built wrong for 12 years. Turns out his right arm is supposed to connect in a retarded way that greatly limits articulation. What an odd model this guy is.
>>

I actually checked once, and if piece count only is considered, the single character with most pieces is actually Exo-Toa. Dunno which set is actually biggest.

Yeah, if you ignore stuff like the playsets, combiners, twin models, 08-09 vehicles or the piece tubs, surprisingly the Exo-Toa's piece count comes out on top. At least according to Brickset.
Size-wise, probably Toa Mata Nui. He's a big guy for everyone.

>>
>>6979843
Set-wise I agree but, would have they been ruined like the Toa Nuva were? If this really was supposed to be Nuparu like some have been claiming, the answer is yes.
Story-wise, I'm not against it. I believe we would've gotten Nuva vs Makuta in 2009 either way. It's that you'd need to give 2008 something interesting going on for it in order to have it not feel like filler.
>>
>>6979537
kys faggot
>>
>>6979934
Story wise I just can't help but think how badly the Makuta would've been nerfed. I mean, Greg had to make three of them blind and have other three locked out of majority of their powers and they were still equal to Nuva, strongest Toa team.
>>
>>6979941
I think that if 2008 had actually starred Jaller's team we would've seen different enemies. The Brotherhood would've been saved for later years.
Alternatively, I've always liked a solution I once read here: narrowing the actual Makuta to just a few ones (like Antroz and Icarax) and have the rest of them be servants (like Bitil and Vamprah). You'd avoid most if not all of the nerfing this way.
>>
>>6979694

I know that feel all too well. I'm guessing you've experienced at least one panic attack about it too. I cope with it by dying inside. Old people doesn't seem to much mind. Perhaps they feel they've had their fill of life and are content. Maybe when we're old we'll have the same perspective and this existencial dread we feel is our subconscious going all "I'm not ready to die!".
Here's what you'll do. When you have free time, you're going to use a bmi calculator and tell me the score. Then you'll read up on panic attacks. If you have the time and money then you could travel to haunted places to build up enough agnostic doubt.
>>
>>6979537
you look 100% male
>>
There are so many crackpot flat/hollow/alternate earth theories, many of them imaginative and interesting. If I were to reboot Bionicle, I'd use one of them instead of the GSR. Also I'd make Light and Shadow more regular elements with no outright morality. Instead Light would extroverted (being seen, being loud, putting yourself out there) while Shadow would be introverted (being hidden, being quiet, avoiding crowds). Gender wouldn't be fixed and there'd be more elements. Love would be canon. If the series lasted for years then I'd include a subplot about the Toa Mata coming to terms with not being the only Toa, and having to fight Toa equivalents. Toa sets would be protector-small or even minifigs, with titan sets of giant characters and monsters.

Technically speaking, what was stopping Mata Nui from adopting a bigger form? He was sand with a mask on top. Would have been a neat moment if, after the Skrall refuse to release his friends, he lost his shit and turned into a giant. I'd rather have this than purple bug-Malum.
>>
>>6980067
Also I'd make Light and Shadow more regular elements with no outright morality.

I like the Brotherhood being a group of seven or eight to match the number Toa in equal numbers. But the thing is that there should have ONLY been seven or eight. Total. Instead of the '08 guys being the "higher ranking members of about a hundred" they should have been the only ones in existence, all brought together.

Only three of them are blind. Not to mention, they can see through Matoran, and are still OP as shit with all 42 of their powers intact.

Dude, keep in mind Teridax told them the plan was that they just needed to stall the Toa and then let them win.
The blindness and swamp mutation were just a diversion to make us think the Nuva were on any level playing field, but in reality, on top of all that, the Brotherhood was going super easy on them from the beginning. Icarax was the only real threat, but some infighting and OP Ignika hax took care of him.

>>6979941

I thought the powerlevel handling was crap storywise. Makutas are ludicrously overpowered to start with, but handicapping them and giving the good guys flashlights wasn't a good way to balance them. If I were in charge of the project then I'd have the OoMN deploy it's military to aid the toa including Botar, Krika would go rogue and fight against Teridax, and the Av-toran would be numerous and tarpit the Makuta. The Makuta would tear ass wherever they went and have a few servants with them including a toa of shadow.
>>
>>6980630
I like this idea. The story would need drastic rewriting, but whatever, not like it's perfect the way it is anyway.
What if there was originally just one Makuta, because he's enormously powerful as is, but after the Barraki rebelled and got defeated, six or seven more Makuta were created to fill in their place as governors of their respective regions. And since they were created at the same time, they each only have six or seven Makuta powers instead of all 42. So no need for nerfing. They're all titan-sized, and the 08 canister bad guys can be lower-tier servants.
Then again, maybe that's too drastic a change, but I never liked how overpowered and numerous the Makuta were. Neither did I ever like how small and frail the canister Makuta looked. Sure, most of them were taller than the Inika-build Toa, but they were too scrawny for my liking.
>>
>>6980656

No point in having some top secret Secret Agency that nobody knows of with members and informants everywhere.

I think some of us are still shitting on him simply because he was the most vocal and prominent bzp staffer for awhile and that's it.

Few of his mocs are goodish, and they are relatively recent. It took him years of constant practice and being sponsored by the company to reach that level.

Sauce is somewhere on bzp. Looking for it on the phone would be a pain so you're just going to have to take it as anecdotal. I came across it at random while checking bzp after anons mentioned yet another case of crap going on there. I think it was either after Pomatoranon was bashed there for being a "bad" tranny or after an anon linked to that idiotic feminizing bionicle thread.
Anyway about DV, I remember a couple other (also sauceless) things he's said that made me think he's an ass. At some point someone confronted him about the rumour that the heap of transparent orange masks he bragged about owning was a large part of a supply LEGO gave to bzp to give away as prices but he kept. His answer was "they are mine and I'll do whatever I want with them". What kind of answer is that. If the rumour is true then he was being a greedy childish fuck. If the rumour is false then he was being a twat for intentionally not explaining what's what. One of the things that piss me off about DV's attitude over the orange transparent masks is that they're shitty. They're nothing to be proud or petty about.
The other thing I remember about his shit attitude was a response to a bzper who was most likely an anon from here talking to him about his getting free stuff from LEGO. DV'sresponse was something like "C'est la vie. This is how the system/world works". It really gave me the feeling that he got shat on in the past and that now he was smug about being the shitter instead of the shittee.

However I think his attitude got him into a nazi mod's bad side at some point. What's her name. /biog/ hates her for abusing her position for social justice related reasons.

Poisoned Hau Nuva. The green represents poison. At some point during the Mask of Light, a Rahkshi infected Tahu Nuva with anger poison. Then Tahu attacked Gali because she sassed him earlier.
>>
>>6982912
>I remember it being from some book bundle
Yeah, it was included in the Adventures #1-4 book set. After the supply ran out, they included Lhikan's Hau instead. After those ran out of that too, they put in whatever mask they could find.
>>
>>6982945
I know that, that's why I bought the bundle, even though I still don't own a Tahu Nuva.

The dumbest fallacy ever to grace writing. Just because strange shit happens doesn't mean you can do literally anything. Also, an efficient body plan would still be ideal if those powers failed.
>>
>>6982924
Actually DV. The big bag of clear nycc haus I posted after nycc was part of the pre-release parts given to B6, Tufi, Kakaru, and myself. We were given a bunch of that stuff in person at nycc as it hadn't been ready to ship when the other early parts were mailed out. Yeah it was a brag post but they weren't for BZP- though we did stash 1/3 of them away for BZP. I ended up with about 80 of them and while I have definitely jokingly bragged about them- I also bring them to every convention I attend and hand them out to almost anyone who asks as well as a surprise for fans of the line. I think I have maybe 8 left in my personal collection?

And yes I had a falling out with Tufi but that was a personal issue and had nothing to do with BZP or Lego or bionicle and everything to do with a disruptive presence in our friend circle. C'est la vie.

I'm glad we got the Volitak and Tryna in silver: that made them much more versatile. But Nuparu does look much better with a black mask (pic not mine). I plan on doing the same, and I'll add some orange to him while I'm at it.
>>
>>6983554
>I'll add some orange to him while I'm at it.
This is actually my biggest issue with Inika/Mahri. They don't share the color scheme with their matoran forms. Then again, neither do Turaga and Metru (except Whenua) but that I can live with

I was never really into Bionicle, but I did think the Barraki looked cool. I missed out on that era completely though. However, I used to go to this one Frys Electronics and they had a single one in stock: Takadox. Which happened to be my favorite design. Sadly though, the canister was opened and someone had stolen most of the parts. It remained there for a long time, just taunting me, until some employee figured it out and pulled it off the shelves.

That was a long time ago, but I remembered it about a week ago and decided to make my dream come true. I bought a complete Takadox off eBay and it's everything I dreamed it would be. Sorry for the blog post but I'm just so happy I couldn't contain myself.

2004 was pretty good

2007 was great. Great toa great villains great titans.

2008 had good Makuta I guess

Didn't like 2009

2010 was a joke

2001 was the beginning and was great, 9/10
2002 was great, following 01, 8.5/10
2003 was great, especially with the titans but overall not as good as the first years, 7.5/10
2004 was also great with the toa but not the Vahki, Otherwise the Titans and the Matoran were awesome, 7/10
2005, I didn' like 05 except for the Visorak and for the Titans, The Hordika were'nt that good and the Rahaga were litteral shit, 6/10
2006 would have been awesome if the Matoran weren't shit, but is saved by the Toa and Titans 7/10
2007 was really nice but lacked consistency, some Toa were awesome and some were really bad, same for the Barraki. But the Titans were crazy good, 7/10
2008 is only saved by the Makuta and vehicles which were awesome, 7/10
2009 (unpopular opinion) would have been the best if it could have been more developped, sets and lore-wise, 7.5/10
2010, thanks, more Av-Matoran ! 3/10

I'm mostly talking here sets-wise

It was a personal non-lego issue where she took a different friend's side during a breakup. Oh well.

>>6984986
Someone at LEGO. We like to think BIONICLE being canceled was a big deal and with all the petitions and stuff- but LEGO had to hire almost twice as many call center employees than they already had to field the parent calls about Ninjago being canceled. It was HUGE. It was the only real question they were getting and the number one issue parents were communicating about. Compared to that our please to "bring back bionicle" were like we had never asked for anything ever. We were completely and totally drowned out by the backlash to canceling Ninjago and someone at LEGO went "FUCK bring this back NOW whatever we have to do we are leaving money on the table."

Also I know y'all have spent years mocking and making fun of me, and I've mostly ever loled about it when sent screenshots or links, and honestly I've always liked the attention. But if any of you ever have questions about something you can just ask. I can be kind of overwhelmed and reserved at conventions with new people (I'm actually TERRIBLY shy IRL even though I'm extremely extroverted), and I know my vocal tone online isn't the most friendly. But I'm honestly always okay with answering questions about just about anything.

>The toa are zen surfers living in a tropical paradise
>They surf the pink waters under an alien sky
>The enemy is the evil Makuta, a vague avatar of all the evil things in the world
>Makuta obscures the skies and cuts the toa off from their life-giving good god Mata Nui
>The tropical paradise gets infected by evil
>Fear, anger, pain, tiredness, jealousy etc
>The toa have to defend themselves and overcome both the evils and their personal issues through struggle and growth so they can ascend and be reconnected with Mata Nui

I wanted to mock the idea, but it sounds great actually. Heaven gets infected by the bad things in life, becoming neutral like the earthly realm and the toa have to mature into adulthood. Plus the spiritual journey to enlightment, all with visually striking backgrounds of a tropical heaven (sunny weather, calm seas) and hell (storms and erupting volcanoes).

First time poster, long time lurker. Dumping pics of some of my MOCs. Standby...

>pic related, a full set of G1 Bionicles, unopened. Got them at a thrift store for $3 each. There were a bunch of duplicates that I opened (foolishly)...for some reason the staff had put the containers with the thermoses rather than with the toys, which is probably why I was able to grab them all. I nearly had a heart attack when I found them. These babies are staying sealed.
>>
>>6990327

Starting with this badboy. Wanted to use le demon mask for something and came up with this. The arms aren't the greatest though, in terms of range of movement.

For some reason I liked making huge weapons when I made this guy...like so big they basically act as third feet/anchors...kind of impractical, now that I think of it.

I should note I built all these guys immediately after nu-bionicle came out and they've been collecting dust in a bin ever since.

ikr? I was literally sweating, dashing around the store to see if any more got misplaced. I found a bunch in the toys after going through all the water bottles/thermoses. There was a spare Tahu, two Ounas, and I think another Gala. when I opened them I was amazed how sharp the edges of the plastic were, and reminded how much softer a lot of the bionicle parts have gotten.

Either way, I treasure these things like fucking artifacts.

The G2 pegs are absolutely irritating to reproduce. Fortunately, the resin I'm using is somewhat flexible, so they can be bent inward... But most of the time it's not snug.
I can appreciate the concept of connectors that leave the face free from design constraints, but they just need more friction.

I hope you fuckers are happy; thanks to you I've spent all weekend tinkering with plastic toy parts designed for children. Here's to autism, I guess.

I've finished my personal "remakes" of the original 6 from gen1 (the first was >>6991929). I've used a lot of technic parts and other random shit, especially to build custom torsos from scratch.

My goal was to expand upon the designs of the originals, add detail and poseability, and make them more unique while also making them more interesting. I looked at several other "re-imaginings" of the original 6 when trying to figure these guys our, but most of them left a lot to be desired.

Two things: first, I wanted to keep their weapons faithful to the originals, but I couldn't resist giving Ouna a big-ass industrial mining drill. Yes, it spins. Yes, he can barely lift it. Second: certain limitations in terms of parts led to the limbs/feet being cobbled together from random shit...also, if I had spent more time on the feet, I probably could have made them more 'elegant' in many cases.

Anyway, here they are. I'll dump individual pics also. Let me know what y'all think.
>>
>>6993522

I love these shoulder parts, but I have no idea where they came from; I get a lot of my bionicle parts from bags of shrapnel from thrift stores
and I know far less about lore and which parts belong to which sets than I care to admit.
More clarification/damage control: I wanted to keep their "skeletal" look from gen1...there are a ton of gaps/holes in the original toa, by virtue of their simplicity and of the way the torso blocks look. I didn't want my remakes to just be LOL LOOK HOW THICK I MADE THE ARMOR, DUDE11!11!!! I wanted them to look a little weaker/thinner/simpler than, well, their later generation counterparts. That probably means they look ugly to a lot of people used to more 'clean' builds, or builds that look more 'armored'.

>Blue transparent mask
>Different shade of blue than the transparent pieces on the set

Imagine throwing a bunch of cash away on this and then realizing that they colour difference triggers your autism.
>>
>>6994471
I always thought it was strange that they used trans light blue shells on 2015 Gali, given the sets establish trans blue as the color associated with water, with light blue being associated with ice (and I guess light in Ekimu's case)
>>
>>6994475
Not using trans clear for any shells, be it Water, Light, or Ice sets, is the real tragedy
>>
>>6994504
This 100%. Also disappointing that the NYCC Tahu mask was never relevant in canon. I remember at the time I predicted that the trans/gold split fade masks were only partially drained, and that Tahu was going to get drained even further than that, causing his mask to go trans-orange (hero pack) and eventually totally clear, right at the climax of the 2015 winter arc.
>>
>>6994444
Nice quads.

Rollout here. We had great big folders of every bit of reference available and were already using dozens of screenshots from the HD rips in our back and forth consultations before he ghosted me and everyone else completely. The one on Shapeways now isn't even the most up to date version, but the model is still unfinished. Maybe forever.
>>
>>6994539
That really, really sucks. I wish the guy had at least updated the models on Shapeways to the "99% complete" editions if he was so hellbent on vanishing. Shoot, I'd even throw money at him for it if that's what it took. If I had even an iota of skill at 3D modeling I'd just make the damn thing myself.
>>
>>6994511
Odd that so many masks they released didn't make it into the story. Not that I think that's a bad thing, at least Lego gave you more options for MOCing/playing, instead of trying to force every bit of plastic into the lore like G1 did.
>>
>>6994562
Well, G1 had the opposite problem. At least a dozen masks from the story never got realized.

I've been away from the thread and the community for months because I was focused on school, but I've been developing my casting and molding methods. I believe I have my processes down to a science now, but there's always more to learn.

I have solved several of the issues that were preventing me from making pieces that would truly be worth my asking price -
>I can now make transparent parts nearly bubble free without special equipment
>All pieces will have properly smooth edges from now on
>I have been able to match Lego's Dark Transparent Blue quite reliably
>the flaw of small air pockets forming on the back edges of masks is now mostly preventable

...might as well mention those things, since most people won't consider or see the work that goes into that. Some people have told me that they believed that pieces just come out of the mold perfectly post-processed. I have been working on personal brand materials as well, since the semester has ended. You can expect to see news about the actual first batch of masks of water relatively soon.
>>
>>6994539
That's a shame. I spoke with him briefly about resin casting - he showed an interest in learning it himself. If someone could somehow pick up where he left off, or make another highly accurate sculpt on their own, I'd be glad to strike a deal with them regarding casting and selling resin pieces based on a printed master part. The mask of ultimate power is among the top three pieces I'm commonly asked about making.
>>
>>6994648

What are the other two? If I could buy from you then I'd order trans main bones, trans superchests and trans feet to build completely transparent bonkles.

>>6994644

Cheers buddy. You're now at a crossroads. You can become either a career toymaker and start your own IP or a career scammer and sell counterfeit rare parts.
Me, I'd make counterfeits that I'd tell people the truth about and sell them cheap because I find the whole idea of grown ass men demanding and paying top cash for little plastic toy pieces just because of the relevance in their own small circles weird.
I mean have you read Rusty Brown?
>>
>>6994768
Christ yeah, I've read Rusty Brown - those comics made me more depressed for a solid two months than I think I've ever been. I don't find the concept of expensive collectable toys strange or inherently wrong, though... Like with most anything else that becomes a vice, it's a problem when people make it the only thing they care about. Some of the prices that these things get to are fucking ridiculous, though.

I have no interest in deceiving people though - I set out to help make rarer pieces more easily obtainable to the average person. the mask of water was the ultimate goal, but I can do all kinds of things with resin now... Hopefully in the future if I can get my sculpting skills up to par, I can make a name for myself as a custom toy designer, making lines of figures of my own design, perhaps even as merchandise for a webcomic or something. I already have a few ideas for different lines.

I've been learning digital sculpting programs, but also plan to become skilled in physical sculpting. I sculpted this head based on my dog in Mudbox, and 3D printed it at a local hobby shop, then made a mold of it and casted a few copies. Digital sculpting seems to be very easy compared to irl, but I've hardly begun learning it.

I really wish I learned how to do this well before Bionicle was dead...

As for the other two pieces I'm most commonly asked to make, eyestalk pieces are probably #1, and... I guess there's a small number of things that could be tied for number 3, but the masks of control and creation are about equally asked for. I did make a mask of control mold that I got about... 20 pieces from, though. Those have all been sold or awarded in one of the contests we had.
