>try to collect as many crisp high-res toy photography pics as possible because its a form of coping for being a poorfag and I enjoy looking at the detail
>mfw everyone is on instagram uploading 1000x800 or less images with compression out the ass

Fuck instagram so much who the fuck decided it was a good idea to use that for toy photography when it compresses things so heavily and almost seems to encourage medium-res image uploading only

Also you can't easily save pics either you have to do it from Righttoclick or view image info, for every single one, how fucking tedious and annoying.
>>
>>7050376
This looks great, what's your hardware/setup like?

>>7051527
Honestly I usually resize my stuff to around 1000x anyway. I used to use tumblr, which was a lot better about compression, but kind of bullshit about everything else. Ideally I'd actually use my flickr, but that place is a ghost town.
>>
>>7051546
I mean just look at this pic I found on instagram, this is the upload res, zoom in even once in any image viewer and its blocky and pixelated already, its a fucking nightmare when you see this with a really good pic on instagram

The figures are 1/12 scale, might as well be 3 3/4 by the level of detail visible, its a fucking travesty

Take note instagram shills, this is how you do toy uploads properly, just look at all the detail you can explore and zoom in and take in because it's not a fucking 80% downscaled, compressed and resized image

Its no different from Nip artists switching over to twitter from pixiv, congrats you have your popular sochul media and image hosting website, now you can upload your artwork more compressed and downscaled than ever before, wow isn't that great definitely the right choice for the content
>>
>>7053694
I'm actually curious what you mean? Nobody actually uploads stuff to instagram, downloads their own picture, and then reposts it here. I resize my own stuff when I upload it here, but only because it's pretty rude to just slap down 3MB, 4K pics.

This toy is from gormiti. What line specifically is it from? I would appreciate some help.
>>
>>7053749
i personally use multiple image hosting websites, but you can't seem to wrap your head around why someone would use instagram.
And then you go about it, as if the most popular social media platform isn't good enough for some pictures of childrens toys.
Get over yourself.
>>
>>7053751
>go here http://galactictradingpost.com/
>see all those cool looking pics below the product images
>follow them to instagram
>they've only been uploaded there
>no other website posted to get higher res pics for 99% of instagram profiles
>people set up these cool, creative scenes and dioramas and dynamic pictures
>and then upload them online on a single website that makes them downscale, compress and even painfully tedious to simply download them
>largest full download size is like 1000x800

That's what I mean, I fucking hate instagram. It wouldn't be a problem if these artists uploaded elsewhere like flickr for those who wanted to see larger pics but they often don't and they are choosing to play by instagrams restrictive and confined rules for some reason instead.
>>
>>7053779
another example, really nice scene with a lot going on absolutely ruined by the garbage compression and small size relative to the complexity and scale of the scene

>for some pictures of childrens toys.

Haha yeah thats right fuck uploading quality photos where people can see and enjoy the detail clearly without staring at blocky pixels at the slightest zoom level. Just put in all the time, effort and work to set up a diorama, scene or cool pose and then upload it all onto a site where its compressed, downscaled and blocky because its no different from a generic selfie photo or beach shot or whatever instagram was originally built around with no emphasis placed on high res and low compression - clearly creative toy photography is at the same level as selfies and pictures of food so quality uploads at decent res are not essential!
>>
Instagram is just overtly convenient. Simple as that.
It also helps that everyone is already there after the flight from facebook.
>>
>>7054290
Yeah I know its convenient for those who want exposure, and networking and everything, but its inconvenient for those of us who just want to download the highest quality pic we can when we see a cool and awesome scene

It's really more inconvenient that its so tedious to get at that upload in the first place, the default instagram image browsing window is pathetically tiny and shrinks the image so much for no reason, its supposed to be an image host but they treat the actual image aspect of the site so poorly
>>
>>7054299
Yeah it's gone quite downhill since it got popular, it didn't used to be so gimped. The aggressive moderation is also frustrating on an app that used to be cool with nudity.
>>
>>7054306
I with the "toy community" would come up with their own site specifically designed to cater to toy photography and everything but its easier when theres already an existing infrastructure to use I guess
>>
>>7054311
I do too, but my friends and family wouldn't even download such an app and no one outside of that gives a shit about my toy photos

I want to get into toy photography, but I only have an old i-phone. What's a decent-good starter camera that won't completely break the bank?
>>
>>7056138
Best solution without taking any risks, is getting a better cell phone with a better camera.
Any modern phone has good camera options these days, and will get you where you need to go to get the basics sorted out.

But if you wanna go hard, then go ahead and get any DSLR, whatever you can afford. You'll learn the basics of handling a camera.
You need to ask a few questions about what sort of content you want to produce before you buy something though. What type of photos do you want to do? Lenses are everything, and you have to be willing to invest in a few lenses for different types of photos.

No one takes the perfect shot just by one point and click, a ton of editing techniques are used to get the best result, thus learning something like Photoshop, or whatever free image editor (like GIMP) is going to have equal priority with learning how to use your camera.
Like i said a decent camera on your phone will take you a long way, then all you need to learn is the editing process.
>>
>>7056138
How old is the iphone? Thhe iphone 6 camera is pretty good, when coupled with editing programs.
>>
Why don't some of you try Tumblr? I'm put off from Tumblr for 2 reasons-

the forced registration to view "adult" content. I understand it but it didn't used to be this way. More off-putting these days by Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, Youtube and all these sites randomly banning you and demanding your driver's license or SSN to unban you, fuck their info phishing.

The sheer SJW/feminazi bullshit. I don't really want to attract the attention of girl /pol/, I already hate /pol/ too but it doesn't mean I back SJW crap- and no matter how innocent you are or try to fly under the radar, it's super easy to attract SJW anger anymore. It's not worth a bunch of angry fat women trying to dox me because I said one word that pissed them off and that's not an exaggeration when it's documented to fucking happen.

I get general enjoyment out of these Tumblrs:

gigabeetle
raspberrychainsaw
xombiezach (reblogs some others too)
doubledealer93
tinybuckylife
martinwlee
plasticsparkphotos

We should recompile the list or at least pass on the old Tumblr to someone who is active (or, make an entirely new page?)

A desk and a wall or corner (corner is more ideal). As far as lighting, just take 2 lamps and adjust your camera settings accordingly

What's the best thing to use as a white background? I use a white piece of cardboard but I feel like there are better options.

Guys help me out. What was the name of that one app that was super popular on here for, like a week maybe. It had really interesting and unusual filters that could turn your photos into artsy drawings

Cardboard, paper, or get a cheap light tent. You can even make you’re own light box if you want.

Or, you can do the opposite and do a black background. I sometimes shoot in a beam of bright sunlight. Calibrate the camera for that light and it’ll black out the background. Think of it like a reverse silhouette. Pic related has no background, the black comes from the camera having super low light sensitivity while the subject is in brighter than average light so everything not directly in this light beam reads as black. Does that make sense?

It’s called Prisma. Don’t over do it though. Like all filters there’s a tendency for people to overdo it. I used to universally dismiss it as a garbage app but I’ve seen a few people use it very well

Behind the scenes. If your light source is bright enough and you make your camera compensate for it then your background gets blacked out.

Otherwise, this happens. I missed the meter and it picked up the background

Another example of this technique

I wanna try this, I've used black cardboard and really low lights and it works ok sometimes. You need to lower the iso right? I mean that's all I can do with my phone.

White, Grey, black, maybe some light colors. Grab some posterboard at a craft and keep it flat.
Also look into color contrasts and such. You want to show off your stuff, so white on white, black on black can sometimes make things blend too much.

Quick concept snapshot. Kind of like a “sketch” before finding a location to shoot the final one. Still figuring out how to make it work without the full Figma stand
