Is the comic any good ? Why was Cameron so hard up for this ?
>>
>>100957479
It must be a disaster. A 200 million dollar plus summer blockbuster pulled from distribution and dumped/buried.

Jesus christ, no movie maker dares to even fart anymore without asking twitter which way first.
>>
>>100957938
The comic is fantastic, has enough material to make at least 3 great, unique films. The material was also PERFECT for Cameron. Both thematically and psychologically (cyborgs, strong female characters, future dystopias) but also on a filmmaking level (never been done before FX, FX heavy central characters).

I basically only wanted an Avatar to be a hit so he could make this, which would have been his crowning achievement. Back in the day he had Alba in mind for the lead, but I'm sure he could have found someone else.

But he decided to give away final writing and directing duties, and he chose the shittiest possible choice.

I'm depressed. Glad it looks like it's been scrapped or overhauled and dumped.

There's literally nothing left in summer to compete with except maybe Mission Impossible. They released Guardians in August and made a killing. Not only that, there is a complete lack of trailers and marketing (except for the initial teaser). There's seriously something wrong with this film.

On one hand, the big eyes doesn't matter - she's a robot. She could have been designed by an anime girl fetishist.

I'm not sure how relevant the anime is but in the anime alita has much bigger eye than the other females.
>>
>>100958115
Predator is already part of an existing movie franchise and helmed by rather successful director. Alita is probably retooled right now, after it faced backlash for their retarded use of anime eyes in a live action adaption. They will likely start marketing it again, once Predator is out and they have some improvements to show, so this time around there may be even some hype. Could be completely wrong about all of this though.

I feel like this is going to feel rushed and have awful pacing
>Makaku and Zapan, new villain character Amok, Vector, that OVA-only female character, Ido, Hugo, Alita, probably Nova just to tease a sequel
They have to do the first two volumes, and still build up enough to do motor ball
>>
>>100959131
No I didn't. Titanic had HUGE hype (not all of it being postiive of course) prior to release. A hugely publicized dive and lengthy documentaries released on TV (we never see these anymore, they were quite common for huge films) and trailers. The only similarity is the date change. And that date change was ordered by Cameron because he couldn't finish the film on time. This date change was by the studio (the film is finished) because they felt it couldnt' compete with The Equalizer 2 and Mamma Mia 2.

I think Hugo will end up teaching Alita motor ball, and Nova along with Chiren will probably be experimenting on people like Jashugann in motor ball. Being a bounty hunter, Alita will join to take them down.
>>
>>100959634
They'll use Motorball instead of the gladiator stuff.
>>
>>100959634
You could do it easy if you just allude to Gally's backstory and just jump right in to Motorball.
>>

Just an observation, but Battle Angel Alita is really a story about different characters each attempting in their own way to break free from predestination in a world where the future is determined by the omniscience of giant quantum computers. The theme of predestination is depicted in all kinds of ways in the story, from Nova's experiments to Trinidad's Karmatron dynamics, even to such small instances like Zazee's use of grenades to take out the naked karate robot. Also Battle Angel is THE best SF manga there is, and it shits all over Ghost in the Shell.

I didn't realize robots were made out of CGI.

Also its a pretty big part of the character that she be mostly indistinguishable from a human. As one character she meets doesn't even realize she's a cyborg until he tries to catch her from falling and realizes she weighs a literal ton.
>>
>>100959552
>Makaku and Zapan, new villain character Amok, Vector, that OVA-only female character, nova

They fixed this in the movie by making them all the same character!

Isn't that brilliant!?!?
>>
>>100961845
That's an interesting take on it however, I must have missed how novas experiments are aligned with the predestination theme.
I wish they'd explored a bit further how trinidad was using melchizedek to manufacture reality and what that means for gallys link wth melchizedek it was all a bit rushed at the end.
>>
>>100961939
She's a 200 year old robot and everything apart from her brain is mechanical, which leads to the question what makes us actually human, which is the core theme of BAA. It makes sense to make here different and stand out, since she actually is quite a stand out. The Uncanney Valley would also help the theme, as to get to like her, even if she doesn't look human, while having a brain and i think also spine but i'm not sure anymore.
>>

Feel free to post the part from the original manga where someone questions what it means to be human because I've forgotten. In the frist book of LO. They straight up ask what it meas to be human.
>>
>>100962327
Jesus christ dude, the first big villain directly quotes Nietzsche (the mind is the plaything of the body) as he dumps one body in order to find another.
>>
>>100962342
"The setting" as in "the scrapyard." As the movie isn't going to leave the scrapyard. The only person who even might have a chip is ido and that won't be addressed in the movie, most likely.
>>
>>100962420
That's not really relevant to the topic. "what it means to be human" is an explicitly stated, major theme/question in last order that is never asked in the orginal to the best of my knowledge
Also makaku never said that in the context you describe. He was forced to abandon his body he had no choice.
>>
>>100962395
makaku's entire shtick is hijacking other people's bodies, which results in dramatic personality shifts as the personality of the body takes hold over his mind. Hence the Nietzsche quote.

When they started directly stating "what is it to be human??" is when the writing took a huge nosedive. Culminating in that fucking tournament.
>>
>>100962534
>That's not really relevant
holy fuck you're stupid. Makaku becoming an almost completely different person depending on which body he's hijacked is most definitely a play on what it means to be human. Gally shedding multiple bodies over the course of the manga, as a walking talking ship of Theseus was also a play on this. Literally every line from nova is an attack on humanity's definition of humanity. This is all in the original run.
>>
>>100962552
You're imagining things. The Nietzsche reference by makaku was a throwaway line that was pretty much forgotten and contradicted by makaku himself in his next body. He was just as articulate as ever.

>>100962622
>Makaku becoming an almost completely different person
Wrong, see above.
>>
>>100962707
Because he was more careful to find a less cumbersome body after the slow/strong failed to do the job. Which he also directly states. He still wasn't entirely as "himself" as he is when he's just worming around. He also isn't the same disintegrating kid he almost died as.
>>
>>100962824
There is no measurable personality change between the worm form and his final most powerful body on earth form so you'd be hard pressed to argue that his line about the mind being nothing but a plaything of the body holds any relevance after he said it.

It's completely relevant as Alita is Jim's baby

Jim had been looking for someone to direct Alita for years and was prepared to wait decades for the right man to direct it. Jim trusts Rodriquez and Rodriquez has made a commitment to make James Cameron's version of Alita.

I don't know. But I keep doing it. I mean I've got a guy here trying to claim an entire manga about humanity being fundamentally and irrevocably altered by cybernetic augmentation, to the point where people barely even resemble lifeforms, much less humans, and conduct themselves according to drives that are totally alien to anyone except themselves, was never about "what it means to be human" until that line was directly stated in the revival manga.

TFA is a fringe case as it's the biggest marketing campaign of all time.

Look at other films being released this December like Aquaman, Mortal Engines, Bumblebee and Mary Poppins.

Two of those don't even have a trailer out and none of them have gone further than that.
>>
>>100964208
Big December releases are always advertised early that year. You're confusing award bait movies, which are what most December releases are, for December blockbusters.

This hurts me bros. I've been following this movie religiously since Cameron secured the movie rights from Kishiro and bought the domains in early 2000. Was originally gonna release in 10 days but the pushback was clearly because they either were not even close to being done or they are going back to change how Alita looks which I hope they don't.

Have all the original story when it was still in print with Viz and I own all the current deluxe editions available. I even created a fucking Twitter account just to follow James Cameron and the Alita twitter and it's been fucking silent except for reposts from the first trailer. I honestly don't know how I'll cope in December if the movie is awful. I don't care if it is a financial disaster, I just want to see my favourite character on screen in all of her glory she deserves

Im 90% sure karmatron dynamics are Nova's, Trinidad's mad scientist 1/3 was working on something else. That's the reasoning behind all his horrible human experiments that seemingly have no scientific purpose; the suffering and 'evil' of it is the point, and he does in fact seem to have some control over the future by manipulating his own karma.
>>
>>100964346
>>100964386
Cameron said in an interview(about Terminator, not Alita so no bs marketing) that he was spending his day on Avatar, nights on Battle Angel and weekends on Terminator. We just have to believe in Based Jim

>>

Award bait movies are the most common december releases. I ignored your list out of deference, because it was wrong and you looked like an idiot for making it all. There were teasers for mortal engines, mary poppins, bumblebee, and aquaman before summer. There's been pretty strong marketing on all of them for most of this year, starting last year.
>>
>>100964512
People in hollywood are always marketing.

>this is my baby and I love it
>I leave it in an alleyway with a drunk mexican hobo at night

This logic does not work. At all.
>>
>>100964477
>he does in fact seem to have some control over the future by manipulating his own karma.
How so? The manga is foggy on what the conquest of karma actually is.
>>
>>100964520
>I literally think they're going back into editing to mess with her eyes, I don't think a single person thought it looked good.

This right here is the most likely scenario of all. The googly CGI eyes caused a huge "what the fuck" reaction from all around. They're going to remove them or tone them down at least before they show anything else.
>>
>>100964630
>"what the fuck" reaction from all around.
What are some examples of backlash to the big eyes in normie media?
>>
>>100964317
This, the panel-exact recreation of the Sin City comics gives me a lot of hope, it makes me think he's the sort of profound autist who feels the need to be hyperloyal to the source material. Generally good luck with that in modern hollywood, but with Saint Cameron of Avatar dispensing his benediction anything is posdible.
>>
>>100964724
but how can you have any hope for a faithful adaption after reading the synopsis, seeing the trailer and reading the comment about martians having big eyes?
>>
It's weird that Hollywood isn't pushing this movie hard with it's diverse cast and strong solo female protagonist. It's literally written in the story like that, not to pander to SJWs. I guess my mistake is trying to make sense of their madness

Well from the trailer it doesn't look like she has the Berserk body when fighting Makaku in the sewer
>>
>>100964623
Maybe 'control' is a bad word for it, more that his scientific understanding of karma (incomplete, and not explained to the reader, but functional) lets him see patterns others cannot & is why he always seems 2 steps ahead of everyone else (even when he loses/dies, theres at least one copy still laughing & eating flan)

I think Waltz as Ido is great btw, I liked him in Django as a good guy & Ido does kill people with a rocket hammer in addition to being a profound altruist.
>>
>>100964799
>how can you have any hope for a faithful adaption after reading the synopsis, seeing the trailer

The trailer looked VERY accurate to early Alita to me. Only points of inaccuracy I saw were altered names (Dyson instead of Daisuke etc) and the overdone googly eye effect.

I haven't read the synopsis but I had no problems with the trailer other than the above.

Glad I'm not the only one who thought so. (Though i havent reread the original in years) I'm betting each camera focus is a panel recreation, even if the plot gets jumbled up.

Nova's early experiments like the brain eater and even Jashugan were attempts to thwart predestination; he took pathetic specimens who seemed destined to die, transformed them physically, and set them loose into the world to see if his alterations could change the miserable future they seemed locked into. Like kidnapping a forever alone 4chan NEET and given him plastic surgery and a giant cock to see if it was possible to alter his destiny of smoking weed, playing video and masturbating.
This theme is present in the original Battle Angel run; Alita says as much in the great panel posted above (Nova's attempt at mind control)when she realises that deep down they both want the same thing - to break free of the horrible destiny of bring trapped in the scrapyard controlled by an invisible system.

Mars Chronicle is fucking nutty so far too, all the NC17 shenanigans will be pretty funny to adapt if the movie launches a franchise.
>>
>>100957938
It's been going on for a long time so has a lot of ups and downs
Battle Angel is pretty solid all the way through but the ending is really rushed because the author thought he was going to die
Last Order retcons a lot of the ending of Battle Angel and really fleshed out the universe but some parts of the ZOTT drag on and theres a long ass flashback with some vampires that also drags
Mars Chronicle is currently on going and really gets into Alitas past but again a lot of it is flashbacks and at some points there are flashbacks within flashbacks

my favorite part of the manga. I've spent hours contemplating this scene. what made the doctor kill himself, was it him, or the chip that was his brain? was it his natural disgust and tendencies latent within the chip that killed him, or the chip realizing it had failed and exterminating itself? how would you react to realizing that everything you see, hear, and feel are being registered by a computer chip? didn't he still have a soul in a way? I don't know if I can accurately describe how this makes me feel.

Hey fucker, seemingly having read the manga you should remember how Alita got a full human body at the end , which should be an indicator that she wanted to become a full human since the beginning (which also happens in LO). If the Hugo arc didn't make it clear for you that she'd rather be flesh and able to love. Also, Makaku's whole rant about how he got treated inhuman, even by his mother who flushed him down the toilet like shit, not giving a fuck about him, no one caring who he is or what he is to the point where the overworld thinks he is a rat, burns him and leaves him to rot in the sewers, only then to meet Alita who seemingly cares about him and his actions, where no one expect Nova who gave him the maggot body cared who he is and what he wants. Nova was the first to treat him like a human and respecting his wish. Being also the first Woman that cared about Makaku in some way, he naturally falls in love with her first sight (like most of the ronreyfags here should know)

Humanity (and what makes us human) is the central theme of the Manga, if you think so otherwise, you could give us a hint and enlighten the thread.
