I've never been as interested as most cinephiles seem to be in national cinemas as categories. I suppose Jean Renoir, Jean-Isidore Isou, and Robert Bresson do have something in common other than that they all made films in French, but I have no idea what that might be. I'm not saying that there are no characteristics of national cinemas, or that an article purporting to show that Bresson or Godard might have some Renoir-ian roots might not be useful, but rather that directors, the whole output of one director, studying that, has always proven more fruitful for me than generalizing about nations.

The most essential point about auteurism for me is the way that seeing film B by a director can completely change one's perception of film A, even to the point of making it seem like a different film.
>>
>>78255383
Very true point. Many such cases
>>
>>78255383
ok, please discuss DW Griffith's The Birth of a Nation in light of Intolerance (and/or Broken Blossoms and Way Down East, which also have themes against prejudice and discrimination)
>>
>>78255674
lol ok, when is the essay due, prof.?
>>
>>78255674
Didn't realize this was r/truefilm...
>>
>>78255674
The Birth of a nation has a scene where interracial sex is basically equated to rape and the heroine is killed whereas Broken Blossoms does the opposite and has sympathy for the characters. I think it really is as DW Griffith said that he just took the book to screen and didn't realize the contextual racism of the time.

>>
>>78256365
I read somewhere that most of the racism is from the book and the Civil War stuff was all Griffith, but I can't say for certain

Personally I just think Griffith was a bit of a rube. He was the son of a Kentucky Confederate Officer and obviously was raised thinking a certain way, but he really never develops the awareness to transfer his Victorian sympathies for the poor to those of other races until he became a national celebrity and half the country called him on it. All his early films are about damsels in distress or the downtrodden underclass, then he makes an epic about how former slaves are conspiring to ruin the nation and the Antebellum upper class are the victims. You'd have to be a moron to not see the hypocrisy there
>>
>>78257738
Now watch the even better George Washing
>>
>>78254539
Mmm, dunno when it's getting UK release though. Also initial reviews weren't too good. I'm holding out hope though.

Kenneth Anger made "Fireworks" at 17. He could hardly show it anywhere. A rather salacious bio of him, which he refutes, suggests that he used it to whack off to. I think if you look at "Fireworks," that does sound plausible. Perhaps that's even part of why he made it. This "use' doesn't prevent it from also being a great work of art, of course.

Watched Lady Snowblood last night for the first time, highly entertaining, almost comical how much it appears Tarantino stole from it for Kill Bill.

Is the sequel worth checking out as well? Ive read its fairly flat, but i feel like i need to view it now that im aware of it
>>
>>78283824
i liked the sequel desu despite its flaws, mostly with the political storyline not being very interesting or involving. i think the biggest gripe a lot of people have were the changes to Lady Snowblood's character, but i saw it as consequence of her achieving the revenge that was her entire life's purpose, as in she seems very aimless for the first half of the film. very different from the first one, where she was this graceful but relentless killing machine.
>>
>>78283824
>almost comical how much it appears Tarantino stole from it for Kill Bill.

It's quite alarming how much stealing he gets away with.
>>
>>78274920
i had the same reaction, slightly less positive even. Carol and Therese scenes together are pretty good acting wise, but you never really get a sense of why they are so attracted to each other and the age difference was slightly bothersome (i can't really buy into a "lol they just are" type of explanation, that Haynes himself has Therese's NYT friend introduce in his little talk of physics and attraction; that will work for why they are homosexual, but not why these particular individuals are together).

and yeah, the melodrama that surrounds the slow-burn romance is pretty dull. you forget almost instantly about Therese's boyfriend, and there could have been more to the custody battle between Carol and Harge, while well-acted and empathetic (Harge seems more hurt and confused than only, simply hateful and despicable).
>>
>>78282999

>>

Have you ever been in love before anon?
>>
>>78284821
Which didn't stop you from giving a wrong answer
>>
Is it possible to truly appreciate and understand film without ever having experienced love?

when so much of cinema (particularly art house cinema) revolves around human relationships and intimacy and desire, how can you really claim to understand it when you have no frame of reference or experience yourself?
>>
how do I learn to write pretentious film reviews?
>>
>>78258995
It's pretty. What else do you need to know
>>
>>78285061
yes

even if someone hasn't been in love, they very likely have had the desire so they can at least relate to that aspect. plus, imagination and second-hand experiences of the love between others (either irl or through film/literature/other arts) counts for a little at least and isn't entirely worthless
>>
>>78285017
Explain why my answer was wrong.

>>
>>78285061
What's it actually like to experience love? Will it make me appreciate films more?
>>
>>78285243
to QT's credit, he is very open about his influences

i guess most people were okay with it, and if we are talking about all the "normies" that saw it, they wouldn't care or have a clue anyway
>>
>>78285158
You said "Synt''
>>
>>78285441
It asked "why" the answer was wrong, not "what was the answer?"
>>
>>78285510
Silly you. The why it's wrong is exactly what the answer itself is.
>>
>>78285126
Here are some tip:
Record yourself speaking about the movie in a stream of consciousness and write that down
Substitute words with unorthodox synonyms
Talk about hip, cool concepts like satire or postmodernism
Read Wikipedia articles about literature, philosophy and art movements, make some analogies and throw some obscure references
>>
>>78285157
Then how come this anon completely misunderstood the art house movie about love? What other reasons are there? >>78284398
>>
>>78285594
Okay so no real answer on your part, gotcha.
>>
>>78285839
If you want to deny the answer, go ahead.

really though, it seems like that anon doesn't want his movie characters to be like real people. or rather, he wants clear reasoning and motivations from characters, which definitely is not something to be found in "art" cinema for the most part but desu quite common in mainstream commercial cinema

Haven't posted since the new year. I watched 171 feature films in 2016, which is better than the 128 I got in 2015. What should my new goal be for 2017?

I finally got around to watching Syndromes and a Century last month, which someone here recommended to me awhile ago. I just wanted to say thanks for the rec, great film. Liked it better than Boonmee.

A lot of the films I'm interested in seeing are also pretty tough to find since I'm not on any private trackers.
