the Brewster Buffalo and LAGG 3 where much shitter planes. The British ROC was also much shit.

Even in the war, the Spitfire was the higher quality, more expensive then the hurricane, and had a much better record then the hurricane.

>wood delta-veneer (a resin-wood multi-ply veneer composed of very thin, 0.35 to 0.55 mm, wood veneer and phenol formaldehyde resin, baked at high temperature and pressure) used for the crucial parts. This novel construction material had tensile strength comparable to that of non-hardened aluminum alloys and only 30% lower than that of precipitation hardened D-1A grade duralumin. It was also incombustible and completely invulnerable to rot, with service life measured in decades in adverse conditions. The full wooden wing (with plywood surfaces) was analogous to that of the Yak-1. The only difference was that the LaGG's wings were built in two sections.

the easiest tactic against 262s was to wait for a landing approach, since early jets had hilariously bad acceleration and good energy retention

but the P51D could reach a 262 in a dive

also while the P51 wasn't the best at turning in the war, a 262 exists on it's speed (otherwise there would be no point in using jet engines), and since the luftwaffe was VERY short on experienced pilots, you had poor fuckers with 10 hours of flight time sortieing in something that was a pain to get off the ground, and started turning like crazy at the first sign of trouble

the meteor was never sortied against any other planes

sure it shot down V2 bombs, but the brits were deathly afraid of one going down over anything that wasn't occupied

and the p80 never flew any missions iirc

so yes the 262 was the only jet fighter that the spit ever fought

any other fighters the germans fielded that didn't use props were rocket powered, and were also complete failures

>A spit has 14 seconds of ammo, iirc the 109 had slightly less

Spit Mk.I had 350 per gun at about 700rpm. That's 30 seconds.

109 had very little ammo for the cannons but 500 per gun for MGs.
>>
>>93120451

You climb high. Then you dive on the enemy and not turn with them at all. Just fire all ammo you have and turn back at full speed.

That's what burgers did to nip planes after they realized they could never win dogfights with them.

You'd never get put into a plane in the first place with an attitude like that becoming a fighter pilot is hard. You could just ask to be ground crew.

Look, there's two reasons to join the RAF: getting paid and getting laid.

I'm not a dick. I'd ask my squadmates if they want in on it (once the tower's out of radio contact). We could bail on the war, fly into some cloud banks, say we got lost. Better yet, we could shoot each others wingtips to scratch the paint and look genuine. Guaranteed medals.

How is this a bad plan?
>>
>>93121347

Well, the fact that there's nothing stopping the Germans bombing London for one.

But fuck London. I'm in on your plan mate.
>>
Is being a pilot in WW2 the best position?
Zero to non PTSD because the kills you make are completely impersonal due to just shooting down other planes, no horror to be seen, if you get caught you're not treated as an average soldier, and back home you're considered as a turbochad superhero.

>>
>>93120653
I see that’s what the conversation between Collins and Farrier mean. They had the option to fly high to avoid getting dived on but they would not have visual contact to protect the boat. That also explain what that one german plane just attack Farrier plane then break away because he was outnumbered. He just did a dive attempt then GTFO instead of challenging them to a dogfight. The flight leader probaly got taken out the same way since he didn’t see the dive coming and never got the chance to tell his teammates that he got hit.

Furthermore, cavalry charges could still be effective even in WWII if executed properly. American cavalry effectively charged Japanese troops in the Philippines and Soviet cavalry were used against retreating German infantry throughout the war.

>>
>>93111975
The Buffalo was a great plane. It was a pre-war design and was soon outclasssed by the war-time development of new planes. But for it's time it was excellent. The Finns, in particular, put it to great use.

The LaGG-3 was pretty bad. But that was due to a lot of engine production problems. Once they got the kinks worked out it was pretty much the La-5 which was an outstanding plane.

So it's kind of like the P-51A and the P-51D. Nobody calls the P-51 a shit plane just because its first variant sucked.
>>
>>93128182
No.

It's nice seeing a bunch of vintage WWII planes in flying condition. But beyond that it's a shitty movie.

>despite every tactical advantage in their favor

Not true. There were quite a few simultaneous situational problems that developed that essentially doomed those devastators. Due to communication and navigational errors, their fighter escorts were absent at a critical moment. They happened to run into a flight of returning japanese fighters as they started their attack run and were most vulnerable. Even if they had all been the new and far superior TBF Avenger torpedo bomber, they probably would have had similar loses.

It's true that the were outclassed by newer Japanese planes, but the devastator gets unfairly maligned from Midway.

Lads these are publicity shots, they would spread much further out in combat. 'Visual contact' is a pretty long way in the sky, not to mention these are all bongs who used working radios. Pic related is a very famous image from a lot more recently and it's not how they flew in combat against Iraq.

>>93130280
No, they'd fly quite close together on combat missions. Leader/wingman pairs are critical in dogfights. Visual contact is a long range in clear conditions, but it's also easy to lose at long range. Tight formations keep constant visual contact at all conditions. Also handsignals are a common form of communication between pilots, in addition to radios. There are also some fuel saving benefits, similar to race car drafting. With well trained pilots, collisions are not a major major concern. When you're driving down the freeway at 70 mph, running into the car next to you isn't a worry, and you're not even coordinating your movements with the other drivers.

Right, but why were you assuming they were firing their cannons in that one shot? They could have used all their 20 mm ammo, or they could be holding their 20 mm fire.
