Just got around to watching this. Can I get some non meme opinions besides
>SO SAD!
>I CRI EVERYTIME T.T
>>
Propaganda to make us feel sorry for a country who allied itself with Nazi Germany and committed atrocities all across Asia.
>>
>>97369131
That was my exact thought process throughout the entire film. Yeah it sucks I guess but Japanese were sub fucking human during WWII
>https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unit_731
>>
The kid fucked up by not swallowing his pride
The adults fucked up by being Japanese and not looking out for them
>>
>>97369040
I always wondered why it was called grave of the fireflies
>>
>>97369040
Honestly thought it was shit. everyone mentions how sad it is, yet ultimately the older brother got his younger sister killed through his own pride.

Been a long time since I've seen it but i'm pretty sure they were able to stay with their auntie or some relative as long as the boy did chores and other shit, and yes, she might not have been the nicest lady, BUT it was a safe roof over their heads, with food and water, instead the brother goes "nah I can do this by myself" and leaves.

>muh so sad tho

Totally the brothers fault, should have swallowed his pride for the sake of keeping his younger sister safe, not like he had it too bad staying with the aunt or whatever.

Animation is not Ghibli's best.
>>
>>97369131
Well yes there's that aspect of it but >>97369197 is right as well. The film is also pretty critical of the mentality that landed Japan in hot water to begin with. It really just fucking hates the state of the world as a whole.
>>
>>97369040
It's a good movie because so few movies try to be bad movies. Take that as you will.
>>
>>97369273
This. It's about a society that can't protect it's weakest members and their inability to recognize this until it's too late. Might be my favorite Ghibli movie tbqh
>>
>>97369252
It was the brothers fault. His aunt reprimanded him for sitting around all day neither working nor going to school. Granted his school and workplace were bombed but he didn’t even help with chores or cooking. When the aunt called him out for it he goes full blown autist and runs away.
>>
>mfw reading they aired this as a double feature in theaters with My Neighbor Totoro
What the fuck is wrong with nips
>>
>>97369040
It's a tearjerker, what to you expect. Taken at face value, it's the story of how a boy loses his family a person at a time, and it's too much for him. The message I took away was that the casualties of war aren't just the people shot, which I already knew anyway, but that doesn't make it less true.

>>97369234
When the boy and his sister are living in the bunker they catch some fireflies in a jar or something. Which are nice for a while, but they die. So they make a grave for them. I forget if this is before or after the bunker holds their mother's ashes, becoming a grave in truth.
>>
>>97369382
Cheers, I knew there was something that pissed me off whenever I saw this film, followed by everyone on the internet holding it up as the saddest movie ever made.

I remember watching it and thinking it was pretty much his fault, just couldn't remember what happened in the film and have no urge to watch it again as it was shit.
>>
>>97369131
>atrocities are good when WE do it !
whatever makes you feel good buddy
>>
>>97369507
>I remember watching it and thinking it was pretty much his fault
Blaming a 14 year old Japanese boy for not being a responsible adult after is town was fire bombed and mother dies
>>
>>97369382
He sold his mother's clothes so they could get food. Then she acted like they should be grateful to her for getting to eat the food HE got for them
>>
>>97369793
Nobody was asking him to be an adult, all he had to do was pick up some slack around the house
>>
>>97369793
My only real problem was that he should have used his mom's money before his sister was dying
>>
>>97369828
True. She WAS a cunt but death wasn’t really a better alternative
>>
>>97369382
You're remembering inaccurately.
>>97369507
They were going to separate him and his sister, keep her there and send him somewhere to do useful labor. The relatives were making him feel unwelcome because they didn't want him, only the girl. His sister was the only thing he had left in the world. Taking her and skipping out was a mistake, but it was an understandable one.
>>
>>97369866
>Not taking into account emotional trauma
>>
>>97369131
It's almost like every country has casualties in war and there are no truly good and evil sides and the world isn't black and white
>>
>>97369178
>were
>>
>>97370113
Well they went from holding “who can kill the most innocents with their katana” contests to jacking off to “1000” year old demon lolis. Radiation is a real bitch

Baby's first moral compass.
Allies spared Unit 731 from any harm and took their research btw.
>>
There's suddenly this meme going around that the movie is about the war. It isn't. Maybe you people should actually watch it.
>>
HE KILLED TRILLIONS
>>
>>97369382
It's almost as if he's like a ten year old.

It doesn't matter that the kid was a moron, the adults shouldn't have been so apathetic towards him. Fucking hell even the doctor doesn't give a fuck.
>>
>>97369433
Different ideas about what's appropriate for kids. When anime that was meant for kids/early teens was brought to America it always got censored.
>>
>>97369040
>>97369131
I think it's a bit heavy handed.
The endless flashbacks of the sister, you can just imagine the director being like "YOU CRI NOW"
>>
>>97370814
>CRY
>CRY
>YOU CRYIN YET?!
