Here’s what I think the son’s appearance is there to imply - that he’s not only not Byrne’s son, but possibly the product of rape, or at least coerced sex.

The mother is a bottled-up mess who can’t bring herself to talk about any of the things that trouble her. She “sleepwalks” and nearly burns them both to death, at the dinner, she talks all around their problems without ever admitting anything, later that night, she “sleepwalks” again, and in her dream, finally some truth emerges - she never wanted her son, did everything she could to “failed pregnancy” him except actually have an abortion, but there is more truth lurking behind that, and the son’s question drives right to the heart of it: “Why?” Why did she won’t to kill her son? Because she knows the truth about him, but can’t even admit it to herself in a dream, would rather burn them both than admit it.

He’s the child of one of the cult members.

Dunno don't think my penis got in the way of the film because ghost world is an all time fav (and Scarlett's last good movie). It all just felt so ephemeral, like her problems were all irrelevant aside from every religious trope/rebellion. The abortion scene was really in poor taste it felt like a "y-you too" moment that was WAYYYYYYY beneath ladybird irregardless of who she was trying to impress or prove herself to. Her dads a cuck, her siblings arecone step over the EDGE, her foibles in romance are laughably cliché, the breakfast scene is utter tumblr, the college (and by proxy waitlist) plot points were forced as FUCK (especially with the wimyn becoming the more educated subspecies meme), and the ending was just as big a letdown as the rest of the film.

A24 has a very clever marketing team that manages to overhype their low budget releases on social media because they pour more production money into advertising, creating a sense of "they can do no wrong" with all their releases.

The reality is they're a bunch of hipster faggots capitalizing on a market of millennials who's first exposure to non-capeshit/big budget films are things with reddit and faux intellectualism appeal. This happens every single time they release a film, especially a horror. Anyone remember It Comes At Night? The flood of shills?

>"WOW ITS SO GOOD ITS BRILLIANT ITS SO DIFFERENT I WAS GENUIENLY SCARED OMG THE SCARIEST FILM IVE EVER SEEN."

>>
>>99849547
I still liked It Comes At Night, but yeah that one’s a pretty niche taste. From what I can recall hey’ve got a couple movies coming out that I’m hearing NO hype for. That one with Timothee Chalamet, that one about the two bitch teenagers, Under The Silver Lake (which I’m extremely fucking excited for).

I agree a lot of their movies are overhyped but I don’t think they’re doing THAT much
>>
>>99849547
So if the indie studios are buying off the critics, and the big studios are buying off the critics, how does any movie get bad reviews?
>>
>>99849660
Because my girlfriend interned with them and worked in their PR/advertising department. They have managed to outpace other studios in a shorter space of time because they focus their finances on giving newcomer directors the opportunity and budgets to create a film for cheap, then pump all their employees and resources into flooding the airwaves with false hype. They have done this with EVERY single film release since 2015. Look at the size of their release calendar year after year and tell me its not working. They make bank with this strategy because their overheads are low and the return is high, they're spending cash where they need to

>>99849760
Unless you didn't pay off the critics, or create a sense of hype/intellectualism around your film, you will get a bad review. Film criticism solely revolves around groupthink now, how other critics want to be perceived as "understanding" and "deep thinkers" by enjoying something they "think" they're supposed to like because it'll make them look smart.

but
>cabin in the woods
is a comedy / sci-fi with horror elements, where the script got too much sidetracked from the scientists and focused way too much on the teenagers. for me, it's the same theme as gremlins 2 or the first resident evil movie - monsters in a corporate-controlled environment.
I just cannot see these as horror, as there is no real thrill watching these. they are all about showing you fun/interesting stuff, and fail at shocking you.

it makes a lot more sense to just interpret the demon bullshit as metaphors for their psychological disorders and guilt
in that way, her burning the diary is an attempt to try to put a quick fix on what are much more deeply-rooted problems
the first time she tries to burn the book, she starts catching fire, indicating that a quick and dirty fix to complicated, interpersonal problems would just result in her being hurt; she immediately stops
she then, in a more desperate and psychotic state later in the film, flings the book into the fire. this results in her immediate loved-one being consumed by the fire, which i think could represent the emotional distancing and pain that can come from not addressing the root of the issues and trying to simply patch things with a shitty band-aid

that's just my interpretation tho

I thought it was pretty good, even though it dragged a bit in the middle. I liked the Wes Anderson-esque perfectly centered frame shots and the bare-bones, naturalistic cinematography. I also liked how in the middle it was like a family drama dealing with grief, but near the end it was more like a well-executed, conventional 70s horror movie with nihilistic undertones and a satanic cult. Overall it was an atmospheric, slow-burn horror movie with no jump scares, which is refreshing.

So it's another boring satanic cult movie where extreme violence is used in place of actuall terror?

Why are horror film makers so incompetent when they've seen what works? For example: annihilation. The alligator scene was not scary in the slightest, looked like something out of a resident evil game; the gutting scene was so clear and focused it was impossible to feep tension; the first bear attack cuts so abruptly that I actually laughed; the second was so fast and slow fast and slow that any sense of tension is gone, they immediately have the mexican chick run outside instead of letting our fear build up.

Contrast another monster movie: an american werewolf in london. Even on a shitty looking soundstage, the scene in the foggy moor was excellent. We don't see the monster, just hear it a bit. It acts monstrous, circling around the protagonists in the fog. We feel exactly as anxious as they feel until it strikes, and the all we're left with is the sounds as the main protagonist runs, stopping only when he hears his best friend pathetically cry out "It's killing me!" Unfortunately we later see the monster in full view which diminishes it but still, that opening attack was great. They've known hiding the creature and making its motivations only hinted at is a winning formula since Jaws.
>>
>>99854462
It's clear from your language that you didn't see the movie. Why so quick to pass judgement on something you know nothing about? I can tell you right from the first line your impression of what the movie is is wrong.

>So it's another boring satanic cult movie where extreme violence is used in place of actuall terror?
not really at all. It's more a melodrama with horror elements. It's pretty raw and ugly, and not in a visceral bloody sense, but in a emotional sense. It's horrifying in the most sympathetical sense. Later, the movie transitions into actual "creepy" horror with a cult driving the plot.
your entire beef with the movie is with an issue that doesn't exist. The entire movie builds tension the way Witch and It Comes At Night does, except it slightly reveals itself. There is no monster revealed, only one question answered and even then not thoroughly. This is, as you put, a Jaws formula.
Stop fucking spewing your retarded shit when you havent even seen the movie.

I saw this yesterday really hoping I'd be in for a classic in the making, but the last chunk left me disappointed.

>>
>>99856317
I knew the cult stuff was happening since she talked about her mother in her funeral. It was obvious.

What I meant is that they could have played more with it /and/ the characters once the mother realizes it. There really was no need for the random cultists who showed up at the end, Joannie would have been more than enough.

I would have also liked a twist where the mother thinks Charlie wants to help her save her brother, completely misinterpreting the drawings, only to realize Charlie wants him gone too.

That'd have been a classic too, but way more eerie than the naked old people. And again, it would have played more with the psychology of the characters.
