Why is this so well liked? All the technical aspects are great, but the story is obvious and the ending suddenly gets absurd to a comical level.Admittedly I don't really find films scary, but I was certainly not on the edge of my seat at any point.

Amazing production design, top notch performances across the entire cast and like you said every technical aspect was great, great cinematography, soundtrack, editing, basically flawless execution of every single filmmaking element.
Can't wait for The Lighthouse project with Pattinson and Dafoe. Shot on 35mm black and white stock, Eggers the autist madman
You were not meant to be on the edge of your seat, you were meant to feel a suffocating atmosphere of misery and dread. It was basically the film version of black metal.

That is what audiences have been conditioned to expect from a 'horror' film.

>>99846193>And what was with the elements of children growing up? The oldest boy was getting sexual urgesSeveral purposes for that >Biblical Sin. His sister is also tarred with sin by that. >Feeds into guilt. >Transformative horror- possessions, werewolves, vampires have long been metaphors for puberty and sexual awakening>the oldest girl was going to be given to another family.Plays into her feelings of alienation from her own family, and so from God (her concept of God and righteousness comes from her parents). Makes her feel unwanted by her family. This is all motivation for her straying to the devil at the end, to feel loved, to find a place. It also gives us the conciet that although her home life is miserable, she knows no other 'the devil you know', and fears losing it.

This movie is 9/10 for me. The story was "simple" but not everything should be GOT season 2 levels of complex geo-political maneuvering. Nobody is trying to trick you or bend your brain, it's just a high quality movie. The fact they stayed true to the accounts of the Salem trials and got the language of the time just right sealed it for me. It wasn't supposed to be scary either, just broodingly depressing. Imagine hitting puberty in a Puritan family in the woods with no friends, no society, nowhere to go. Then being haunted by the devil as the wilderness starts to fight back. Heavy.Probably going to watch it again soon.

This was a movie that seemed to be made for intro to film students to write papers on.I was entranced by the visuals and the design, but the narrative was bland and honestly, the father's voice was difficult to understand. I'd turn on captions, but I think that would honestly ruin the film since so much of it is the period piece.

>>99847873SF and horror define different aspects of a movie and aren't separate boxes. I'm not against categorization, but there is a problem with the way the industry does it. >>99852533The devil only affected from the outside, while the family turned into each other from the inside.
>>99845876>>99845992I'm still scared by horror moviesThe trick is to eat a shitload of shrooms
>>99848824>the devil exists but god seemingly is nonexistent?>He doesn't know about predestination >>99852045Rainbow connection hits me right in the feels.
>>99852533Because it was the father's pride that had them excommunicated from the town. The devil is quite partial to that cardinal sin for obvious reasons. Not to mention they all believed in predestination as doctrine. If anyone doesn't know thats sheer existential terror because it means your fate was already decided long before you had any opportunity to damn or save yourself and there's nothing you can do about it.
>>99852880You should watch thiswithout getting bored
>>99847139An unironically and objectively correct opinion. Movie was great. Butthurt Conjuring fanbois should gtf out of this thread tbqh
>>99854602this was complete garbage
>arent horror movies supposed to be scary?
>>99854877>objectively correct opinionhow is it objective?
>>99854997C'mon anon, is this your first day?
>>99855444Yeah, I'm fresh from reddit. How is his opinion objectively correct aside from you agreeing with it?
>>99844057>>99844930>>99845264 (hurrdurr i love science fuck religion)>>99845542>>99845558>>99845697t. black phillip
>>99855560> How is his opinion objectively correct aside from you agreeing with it?You're repeating yourself
>>99855689You still haven't answered it.
I challenge you all to describe what you want in a horror movie, without any buzzwords.
>>99855951Good movie that's either disgusting or spooky.
>>99845492So... all horror is shit?Maybe you just don't like horror
>>99845492>/b/ tries to discuss movies
>>99844057stupid art house trash for homosexuals
>>99855655No, but seriously, fuck religion. Yeah science.
>it's not good unless it has a TWEESTSit down, Muh.
>>99855951I want a film that evokes the feeling of horror in me. Like Funny Games did.
Best horror kino of the last decade:>The Witch>It comes at night>The Ritual>A Cure for Wellness
>>99855560Because "objectively" is a meme ya dip
>>99856997yeah objectively speaking, you're not wrong
What's his name again?
>>99845114but was it her butt? never gotten a definitive answer
I saw this in the and loved it and just watched it again. Just as good and still scary as shit. Really amazing film honestly.
>>99844057Wasn't a fan to be honest. It's alright and is great at setting a bleak, creepy atmosphere but offers little else. The ending is just laughable.
>>99856085Stop trying to fit in, redditor
>>99845229>It was basically the film version of black metal. My exact thought as I was watching it.
>>99856085/b/ has better taste in movies than /tv/.
>>99858211No it was not.
>>99851725It's very hard to pull of the Devil as a real thing, the Witch did it perfectly.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MnVaUlgoKbYChills every time.
Why is it called the vitch?
>>99859838I'm thinking of watching this movie strictly for Anya. Is it worth it ?
>>99845973What do you consider as being "scared" though? You don't have to be sitting there vibrating with dread for a movie's creepy vibe to have been successful.
>>99844930what the fuck were you watching to come this opinion?
>>99859880It's not waifu bait but it's a legitimately good film. Don't go expecting jigglefu in all her glory, she plays a puritan after all.
>>99859880she's good in it. but if you aren't interested in slow burn atmospheric horror she might not be enough to make you enjoy it
>>99844057It is all because of the goat talking. You watch the movie thinking it is a typical "White patriarch and religion so evil on misogynist witch hunt" as it reinforces your expectations. Then the goat speaks and most people have a brief moment of insanity themselves as they think "Wait wtf is going on here is this real is the girl going insane after being so persecuted?"Now the viewer has to confront the possibility that evil is real and the fight against it is just.
>>99845264I know this is overused but you are a gigantic pleb
Amazing film plain and simple
>>99845264It's called the crucible
>>99844057Its a movie for 2deep4you brainlets, who want to feel smart.
>>99860994Except there isnt anything about the movie that tries to confuse you. Its a pretty straightforward story. You're not retarded are you anon?
>>99860994The absolute irony of this post
>>99860994It's not even hard to understand if you have any kind of basic knowledge of the time period. It's not our fault you failed history.
>>99846604lol you've seen like 25 horror movies
>>99844057the ending was the only thing I liked.
>all these plebs in these threads always saying this movie is "2deep4u"There's no deep meanings or symbolism in this movie at all. It does what it says on the tin, "A New-England Folktale". That's it, you dweebs. An autist that had a bunch of historical knowledge about that time and place made a folk tale and then filmed it.
>>99863765You're right anon. I'll never understand why this movie upsets the kids so much.
>>99844057Thoroughly enjoyed the babadook and it follows, but this movie was an awful horror movie. It was a good period drama, but not a good horror movie.
>>99845492>Today there are only few types of horror that are made today
>>99853199>Because it was the father's pride that had them excommunicated from the town. And it's the mother's jealousy that pushed the daughter away. It's a movie where confronted to an actual evil, the rigorist religion the father wants to follow and faith make things worse for everyone. Kind of the opposite to The Exorcist where faith is used to fight evil.
>>99845492Apart from The Babadook and Get Out, none of the artsy movies are supposed to be horror. Green room ain't horror either. The person who made that list is upset because he wasn't scared watching movies that aren't supposed to be scary. How can you watch those movies and think it's horror.
>>99864953ThisAnd green room was actually an ok movie too, at least worth it to see Patrick Stewart saying nigger
>>99845264>it should be anti religious allegory not a fucking folktalePeople like you suck so many bags worth of dicks fucking jesus.
>>99845264I am hard pressed to think of a worse opinion I've seen on this board. Wouldst thou like to post less horendously?
