I honestly think the first and second X-Men count as movies in their own right, even if they are inspired by comic book source material. I basically think of them as early 2000's action movies with a twist. If anything, the one thing that separates them from modern capeshit is that Singer at least tried to let the story take itself seriously, slightly dated commentary on gays or other awkward shit aside.
