There's a lot of enthusiasm for yuri-friendly action series, but when it comes to more bonafide yuri, your usual "girls at school" romance reigns supreme in terms of engagement.

We just like pairing things and filling in the blanks more than what's actually happening.

You see series about girls with superpowers or belong to some super secret organization acting as their teen girl task force to beat up grown men and giant monsters and stuff. Honestly you'd probably have better success just writing a one page intro about how one girl is a secret agent or an assassin or some shit, then the rest of the manga is just her coming home after a long day of murdering people and she cuddles and has sex with her girlfriend, and they talk about buying video games and new sheets for the bed.
>>
>>2395411
I don't think that's the case. I think something along the lines of Madoka or Nanoha except with an episode or two about the main pair doing couple things would be vastly more popular than one where the setting is just window-dressing for SoL plot.

any chance of Golondrina to ever get finished?

afaik the translators dropped it years ago because the manga switched magazines, which is a damn shame because it turned out to be a good story
>>

Something like Nanoha with adult women (keep the military uniforms, please!) doing magic fighting stuff with their lovey shit as a secondary. Basically, like Nanoha except fold in a little clingyness or bedroom talking scenes between the laserings.
>>
The issue with action orientated series is, not even hetero shows manage to do it write. Often the romance is crap.

I just binged and finished Morinaga's Girl Friends today. The otaku girl and the promiscuous slut could've ended up together, I mean they both liked yuri and have kissed each other a lot, but why didn't they?

Hey /u/ guys, I was wondering if you could help me find out the title or author of a one-shot (pretty sure it was) I've read.

The main character was a high school girl who was in some club (I think it was the English club). A senpai (pretty sure she was a senpai) in that club is known for hitting on other girls. MC is hoping to get her attention and she does. While senpai is doing lewd things to MC, MC touches her as well. Senpai is surprised, says that none else has touched her back, they would just let her do all the lewdness. Afterwords senpai approaches MC and asks if she would touch her again. MC happily agreed under the condition that she doesn't fool around with other girls. Senpai gladly accepts

I don't mind Horiguchi as much as the K-On haters but I really wish they would have used the Grimgar art as the default anime art.

And before you ask, up to you if you want to watch Grimgar. As an 'isekai' it gets Brownie points for the fact that the MCs are boring and invincible. However it tends towards the other scale in that they're so average there's little to no plot progression. It's the closest anime equivalent to watching paint dry. I don't believe there's a yuri relationship in the show either.

Back to 'yuri in 22/7' maybe it'll be a 'deconstruction' of Idol Anime and include a female manager who forces her girls to shave their head and apologise if they date outside the group with boys.
>>
>>2395411
You're a giant retard. Have you ever tried to write a fiction or draw a manga? Contemporary romance reigns supreme in both het and yuri and yaoi because it's easy to produce. School age characters reign supreme in the manga/anime industry because that's the age of the main demographic.

In order to do other genres like action, historical, sport, psychological, etc, it takes a massive amount of research and formulating the plot. Action scenes are notoriously harder to execute as well. Plenty of yuri mangaka/doujinka I know on twitter whine about how they want to make action manga, but it's out of their ability.

There is a massive amount of het works that even if their action titles only account for 5% of all het titles, they still outnumber the amount of all yuri combined. So it's not a matter of yurifags favouring highschool romance more than hetfags, but a matter of statistics.

Murcielago is action/violence/horror and it's one of the most revered manga of /u/. ShizNat is the most popular yuri pairing of all time based on the sheer amount of fanfictions, and they originated from an action anime. NanoFate is the second most popular yuri couple (with about half amount of fanfics compared to ShizNat, based on FFN data), and they too hailed from an action anime. Madoka, Valkyrie Drive, Symphogear are hugely successful psychological and action anime and took /u/ by a storm. Akaiito and Aoishiro are horror/mythos/action and also ones of the most revered yuri games. All these examples showed that what yurifags want are well-written stories. They're just unfortunate enough to be caught in a niche that don't have enough talent pool to produce a variety of stuff, so they're stuck with school girl romance like starving college kids being stuck with instant noodles.
>>
>>2395830
Also fights can sometimes take multiple chapters and most yuri anthologies aren't serials and YH only just monthly from previously bimonthly and before that quarterly.

Imagine a single fight that could take a year or more to resolve.
>>
>>2395830
Action scenes are very easy to create though. The problem with anime action is it's too over the top and lacks tension. You don't need complex composition and whatever convoluted figures to pull out good action

Manga writers should learn from Italian police films from the 80's and Die Hard. Normal setting, normal guns and other props, a turmoil suffering main character without much special power that goes through everything with brute force and gets injured a lot, seemingly implausible odds of winning, simple revenge driven drama to make the bad guy a bit more irritating, lots of violence (not the murcielago over the top violence kind, but something that seems more trauma inducing with more emphasis on pain), etc. It seems since most yuri artists are good at drama, they'd be good at making this stuff. They just need to shift the focus a little bit, from the sole emotional to physical emotional.

>>
if we're doing 'yuri we read once and can't remember the title of now', I read a one-shot about a couple who went on holiday to a Mediterranean island that was very cute. Can any of you beautiful maidens remind me what it might've been?
>>
>>2395845
>Gunslinger Girl
Still too over the top and way too "clean". A good action needs to be more downtrodden, gritty, dirty, and graphic. Back in highschool my boyfriend (don't worry we broke up) rented a DVD of an italian movie called 'La Mala Ordina' and we watched it together. Not much gore, but that was truly brutal. The MC didn't deserve it all and you can't possibly pity the bad guys. This is what anime action needs, a brutal drama.
>>
>>2395843
You're really wrong. Action manga is far from easy. Mangaka are very clear on that. It's kind of unfortunate that a lot of readers thoroughly underestimate the difficulty.

>>2395863
After thinking about it, maybe it's indeed hard since every panel has to be more detailed and dynamic during an action sequence.
>>
>>2395862
You lost me at "dark and gritty"
And you must not watch much yuri, or much anime period to know something like that simply isn't very viable
>>
>>2395843
Action scenes are neither easy to write in literature form nor to draw on a page. What you're thinking of is plotting a situation that leads to the fight and the general development of that fight, both of which are easy to come up with. But when you really sit down to materialize those ideas, you'll be crushed to find out there's so much research and practice needed:
- Write: how to make it easy to visualize the body placement? How to make it feel fast-paced while providing enough details for visualization? How to stave off boredom of a long fight?
- Draw: DEPTH OF FIELD nanisore?, speed lines, panel planning, 4th wall breaking.

There's a very good reason why newbies and the majority of great pixiv artists only stick to portraits and simple flirting scenes. Mastering DEPTH OF FIELD is more hardcore than learning to draw hands (which is already the bane of most artists), and you can't do action without it.
>>
>>2395864
It's even better when they're subtle about it. Just need to flash a bit of cleavage and reel them in.
>>
>>2395845
Oh you want guns?
Noir, Madlax, El Cazador, Caanan, Gunsmith Cats all have as much shooting or more than Gunslinger Girl and some yuri instead of pedo het.
There tons more anime with yuri and plenty of fighting and action that hasn't been mentioned yet: most mahou shoujo (one of the most popular genre for yuri) starting with Sailor Moon to some odd variants like Flip Flappers, Mouretsu Pirates, Black Rock Shooter, Simoun, Utena, Blue Drop, Akuma No Riddle, Kannazuki no Miko, Rin daughters of Mnemisyne, Yami to Boushi, Ange Vierge, etc.
Just this current season has plenty of anime with action and some level of yuri: Princess Principal, Re:Creators, Hina Logi, Battle Girls, Action Heroine.
Action series varies on quality and level of yuri of course. But some of the most successful and best series have been action-oriented. And there is constant attempts to make new action series with yuri. So I can't even begin to understand anyone complaining that action yuri is lacking. That is simply not the case at all.

There are several titles, people are the one that is locked in a few and does not bother to see the whole picture

Has these heights Precure is considered as one of the best action animes and is quite Yuri friendly at this point after they almost crash

There are other mahou shoujo with action and Yuri friendly, not only the super-known titles (for regular when they are Het, they are mysteriously mediocre garbage at best)

Honestly everything is better than what people really want to believe, the romance in general is the one that does not have much public currently (even Harem) people before really swallowed anything (especially western) those same concepts do not do very well in the present

>There are several titles

Yuri friendly isnt the same as yuri

There are quite a few action series that has prominent yuri characters, but they're pretty much never the main characters.

It's actually fucking crazy to think about it but KnM, YamiBou and Mai Hime/Otome, even after all these years, are still the only well known shows that actually had main character(s) who featured lesbians with no ambiguity.
>>
>>2396216
Stopani, Sakura Trick, Valkyrie Drive are well known. Simoun is arguably well known. Blue Drop is not that well known in comparison I guess.

But yeah, we never managed to recreate the golden age of yuri anime: glorious 2004. The recent two-female-protagonists "trilogy" Flip Flappers, Izetta, and Princess Principle managed to escape the CGDCT deathtrap, but never go past subtext.

I 100% forgot about VD, so my bad there.

But I think to be fair, it's also easier to be "well known" back in the days than it is now. It seems social media and internet growth in general have really widened the gap between what's popular and what's niche. There's just so much to choose for a general weeb who just wants to get their chinese cartoons that they have zero need or possibility of being in contact the smaller anime niches.

While we're on this rant about ACTION, it disappoints me to no end that pic related got seemingly canned after one volume.

I've seen some posts here complain about one or two specific parts of the manga like that one scene with the shota seeing MC's panties, but I think the bottom line is that it just really didn't attract enough of an audience for the two authors to continue collaborating. I'd argue about the general fanservice being too much or maybe if the pace of the story was questionable, but other much worse series have endured and (sometimes) improved. I guess the spark just wasn't there.

Wasted potential hurts.
>>
>>2396245
Mai Hime was mostly a het show. It's not hard at all to find a het action show with a prominent lesbian couple.
/u/ hated Yamibou's bad ending but it's unquestionably yuri. The entire story is about a total lesbian doing anything to chase after her girl and both the lust and love was completely obvious, no subtext there.
>>
>>2396245
Well, that's why I included Otome in my original post too.

YamiBou's ending was kind eh, I guess. But back then it was rare just to have a show like that so for the wave of people who experienced it first hand or as their first few series of yuri, it will probably always be something to be remembered.

Isn't Yamibou's ending one girl dying and saying she'll be born as the daughter of the other girl? Or is it another anime? Because I don't know how anyone can defend that or call it yuri.
>>
>>2396289

Not dying, she's like some cosmic level deity but she literally cannot stay in a world past a certain time. Like age 16 or some shit. So she "left", told Hazuki she'd be her child or something, wiped her memories clean and that was it.

At least that's the anime ending.

I've literally been on that site only once to see how shitty it is, so nice try, but no.
I don't like ACK's credit pages, but if I have to choose between letting him keep his autistic rant in one page after the chapter, which I'm not gonna read anyway, and have the doujins being taken down, I'd choose the former without batting an eye.
Now thanks to triggered tumblrinas who can't ignore some stupid joke, many works have disappeared from that site. Totally worth it, am I right?
>>
>>2396427
There was basically no word about it ending, let alone why.

Ending due to not selling well enough is the norm for how the manga industry operates, so it's kind of a fair assumption. Whereas Fukami not having stuff planned beyond vol 2 is a pretty unlikely line of speculation.
>>
>>2396431
They complained about their shitty credit page being removed. Nazi stuff aside, I hate scans that do thing just for their ego, and that's pretty much what they did. They have no right to that work to complain that people are stealing or changing it.

Scans are fucking hypocrite assholes. Someday I'll make a reader just to stole all scans releases, take off their credit page and name and publish it all as anonymous.
>>
>>2396431
Both are equally autistic. Really, who gets angry over their autistic credits being removed besides them and You-Know-Who?
Also, the namefag is on their side. We know first-hand how autistic he gets.
>>
>>2396445
I can't decide if I hate scanlators more than Dynasty lately. SLers act like they own the rights to the shit they steal and its is annoying but Dynasty is the one that is continually enabling that fucking idiotic point of view by acting like any of these requests are fair and honorable. They need to stop mollycoddling every goddamn insulted point of view.
>>
>>2396449
I agree. If I wanted to take off their credit page, I would do that and fuck them.
I understand respecting the original author. But fuck off about respecting the scan wishes. They're stealing it already, to begin with.
>>

Since Dynasty insists on mantaining this mindset, the lesser evil would be to let them keep their shitty credits page.

>>
>>2396443
Then why are you acting like them? If you could actually read, you'd know both sides are at fault.
Also
>disappeared
Oh man there's no possible way to track it down on the world wide web
>>
>>2396456
>because the formers can take down their releases anytime.

Because Dynasty allows it.
Not even the only issue. Some scans says: "we don't want this on dynasty", and dynasty doesn't upload.
Like, stop being retards. Why listen to people that are stealing in the first place? If I made a site to hold thieves works, I wouldn't pretend to have some kind of moral about it.
>>
>>2396458
I don't care who's at fault, the only thing that matters to me is that stuff got taken down from the website because of one triggered retard.

>Oh man there's no possible way to track it down on the world wide web
Can you read or are you just acting like a retard on purpose? I said that they "disappeared from that site", not from the web.
Also The whole point of Dynasty is that you can easily find shit without having to search on other websites, that's why it's annoying when it gets taken down.
>>
>>2396469

>>
>>2396742

>>2396768
I suppose because guys like that yuri danshi one actually do exist.

Also there was this gay male in that humour thread.
>>
>>2396726
Why would I not? Two reasons.
1. Foundation: I have been learning Chinese for several years at school. If I start learning Japanese immediately I'll be starting with year 1 and stuff I unconsciously learned from Japanese websites. When given the choice, build on what I already have or start from ground zero, I choose the former.
2. Comprehensive translation- As I mention the Chinese already comprehensively translate a lot of things. If the end result is trying to understand Japanese media then the Chinese already have most of it covered. That is as good as having the Japanese skill necessary to understand Japanese media at a native level.

So no, I ain't gonna learn Japanese.

>>
>>2396810

>>
>>2396802
I'm not saying it's not worth learning, I'm just saying it sounds ugly. Which is true. It just doesn't seem as obvious to us native speakers, because we grow up learning the language so we get used to it.

And not only is switching way easier said than done, the chinks are tired of playing second fiddle to other countries (they've done so for the last few centuries) so they're not going to switch even if they could.

>>2396803
That's Hokkien rather than Mandarin (which is the standard spoken variation of Chinese), and I usually see them romanised as "lan cheow" and "chee bye" respectively. It's incorporated into everyday usage such that even those from other races use them as well, not just chinks.

As usual, don't listen to >>2399134. It's from an adult VN and it's a harem anime. There isn't much yuri in it and the male MC and the other dude play significant roles. Also, the anime is crap so it's not really worth your time.
>>
>>2399058

I'm watching Bakuon right now and it's ton of fun. Not really yuri but girls only.

>>2399203
Ahh okay...
>>
>>2399094
They took out all romance and the male is kinda useless. It's a decent sports anime, but that's it.
Keep in mind that while there's a girl who likes another in the anime, they both have routes with romance with the male in the game. They don't care about it in the anime, though.

There's a canon yuri pair that stays yuri in the game, but they're irrelevant side characters.
In short, watch for a fun anime sports with girls being cool more than anything.

>>
>>2399285

I'm a complete fucking newcomer to this Yuri thing so I had to look that up, what makes you call her that?
>>
>>2399290
She's broody, shows up in weird places, makes girls swoon, among other things. Vampire speculah was kind of a running joke back when it was airing.
>>
>>2399293

I see, the fact that she just leans in to kiss Nagisa in front of all those students has made her instantly my favourite character so far, and the fact that she was caught kissing a student in the woods.

But this anime is obviously old as hell, I am willing to bet there's no sex, right? Implied or otherwise? (not a dealbreaker)
>>
>>2399294
>old as hell
>2006
Not really, and you're gonna lose that bet.
>>
>>2399303
I'd say 11 years old was old as hell to me, but okay. We have different definitions of ift h term I guess, that's fine.

>and you're gonna lose that bet

I'm okay with this. Well, I think I'm going to like the series, Nagisa is super likable and cute, Shizuna has presence and I'm intrigued by her.
>>
>>2399078
>Rideback
I'm amazed that someone else remembers that thing.
>>
>>2399294
>I am willing to bet there's no sex, right?

I haven't finished the anime yet, but I picked up the complete novel at a con recently for five bucks and flipped to a random page for kicks. I immediately landed on a page of two girls in a spring or something feeling eachother up before a fade to black.

Made me wish there was something similar airing today.

>>
>>2399651
Something gay enough to have an incredibly intimate scene followed by a fade to blacks where you know for a fact the two characters did it but it's not shown. Or just an incredibly strong implication. Like if in Flip Flappers the second time the prettied up pipe house is shown there's a used box of baby wipes in the background.

It takes a certain kind of series for this to even be allowed to happen and then you have to actually do it too.

Not an harem Anime, stupid idiot
Can not any anime have a relatively important male character because it is already considered het?
But that if, they passed completely by and ignore the problems in Mai-hime and LWA

Aokana is really something that is worth seeing, ignores all the stupid Harem and shows how these series work best if that approach in the first place, if it is Basic subtext but the main "couple" is adorable
>>
>>2399658

Why do you want implications over actually showing it though?
>>
>>2399657

Nagisa is not like her other conquests.
>>
>>2399557

I still think the trick Tamao did with asking Nagisa to let her take her measurements for the school uniform then just blatantly ordering a generic large one right in front of her was pretty funny and charming.
>>
>>2399764
Well I guess I'd be okay with actually showing it, but in a show focused around adventure or war/politics or character development or drama devoting time to a sex scene would be likely be a waste, and if done incorrectly can feel at odds with the rest of the work. I want a romantic relationship that results in sex but I don't really care to see it, if that makes sense. There's plenty of places to just see yuri sex but not enough places to see a relationship that leads to it.

I guess you could say there is a gap between works focused on romance and works focused on sex that I want to see. Works focused on romance almost never have sex, and works focused on sex almost never have well written romance. I want a romance that doesn't end before the couple has sex and/or doesn't ignore that they have it if they have it during the show. It seems like a vital part of a romantic relationship despite how little you see it in anything.
>>
>>2399784

Nah, I get you anon. However, for me personslly I like to see couples finally consumate their live as long as it isn't OTT, it's not Yuri but the sex scene in White Album 2 is amazing for this, it shows how the scene can be a catharsis.

Not that I can imagine what Shizuma shagging Nagisa would be like, can Nagisa even stay conscious and active?
>>
>>2399765

What the actual fuck? Got up to the bit where those two psychopaths try to rape Hikari's love for Amane out of her...somehow. That was way too much.

>Didn't expect to laugh this much for an episode of Strawberry Panic.
I don't understand how someone can watch SP and NOT laugh, it's so brilliantly ridiculous.
>>
>>2401435

It's not that I thought the humor fell flat, but the comedy was kinda'...light? I guess. But the way Tamao pathetically holds up the tiny Umbrella to the window with that expression on her face got me pretty good.

That entire episode was great, from "Taller than Percival, Whiter than Percival" and that fucking tool who jumped off that high balcony and tried to slow her ascent with the Umbrella but fell flat on her arse.
>>
>>2401438
I mean I find the whole series hilarious. The first episode never fails to bring me to tears. I swear even the OP is a joke.
>>
>>2401453

I don't doubt you, I hear SP is supposed to be a parody or something like that? Which is why you have outrageous shit like the horseback rescue by Amane to Hikari and what have you?

It's just, I guess I was distracted by how sickly sweet the series is (and that can extend to the opening too, those lyrics) and how cute everyone is.
>>
>>2401460
>I hear SP is supposed to be a parody or something like that?
I'm not sure whether it was intended to be or not, but it sure works well as one.
>>
>>2401463

As fucking pretentious as this sounds, I hear it's possible to enjoy the series on two levels, as a parody and as a straight up romance drama.

Whatever, I'm enjoying it, can see why it's considered a gateway to Yuri for many, although I already had my gate way to the genre a few weeks ago.
