the new episode was really great. let's start a new thread.
>Yuu's left hand
It's like this and Konohana Kitan traded episodes this week, Konohana got the tear-jerking episode and this got the yuri episode.

I think Yuu's hair is not the only part of Yuu Chi ate that night.
Chito just wants to cuddle with Yuu and eat her, she's just too tsundere to admit that and only alcohol makes her be honest with her feelings.

Just got around to listening to the OP and ED singles. Anime-wise, I like the ED better (that bass line is excellent), but holy shit, the OP single is godly.

The OP is amazing in itself (both musically and lyrically, what with that trick with the English puns) but it's the B-side that really blew me away.

Endless Journey

Kettenkrad, and you. Let's go
From the past to the sky of the future
The sun is returning in an eternal beginning

When you're hungry, you immediately get cranky
You really are a child (Hungry Angry)
Your attention to trifles is a bit scary
But I know how kind you are

A mysterious attraction, stronger than gravity
Back to back (mismatched), our Endless Journey

Kettenkrad, and you. Let's go
From the past to the sky of the future
The sun is returning towards an eternal beginning

Our personalities, aren't they just totally opposite?
But together, we make a single story
Hey, I have to tell you right now: "I like you"
Let's face each other as many times at it takes. Straight on

Your irresponsibility--I should hate it, but somehow its so dear
Perhaps, I surely admire it

The world is so wide, but I know what's really important
Face to face, our Endless Journey

Kettenkrad. If we get tired
Let's sleep under the stars
Let's make plans for tomorrow, while we dream.

Advance, Stop, Turn Right, Left, Forward, Back
This endless road, is not a mistake. It's to the future.

Straight on
Do read the lyrics while listening to the actual song.
(ED single here:)

Also, to explain the source material for Endless Journey a bit. Each of the manga volumes comes with an omake diagram of some sort relating to the story/setting of the world at the end. For vol. 1, it was an explaination of the kettenkrad; vol. 2, a map of the places Chito and Yuu had visited thus far; vol. 3, explainations of their other equipment; and vol. 4, several pages from Chito's diary in the series' modified-kana script.

I transcribed the diary entries some time ago so I'll leave a translation for them here.

I thought I'd make Yuu drive today. It's not fair if I always have to drive. But, predictably Yuu drove in a weird direction and got stuck in a ditch.
It'd be best not to let Yuu drive after all.
We managed to get out of the ditch by pushing in a plank and revolving the tracks.
- ditch - plank
Our ability to have travelled this far is thanks to this vehicle, I think. If we didn't have it we'd quickly get hungry and lose our strength. It lets us advance by consuming fuel for energy instead of food.

(top right)
- A broken, sturdy door
There was a hole which had opened up in a type of door you don't frequently see.
Yuu said "Why don't we try going in?"
It looked pretty dark so I didn't really want to, but we went in. Yuu's instincts unexpectedly often happen to hit the mark.
A sturdy door. It might be an entrance to one of the city's foundational strata.

We met a person for the first time since leaving that town.
It seems he's called Kanazawa.
- Kanazawa
He told us that he makes maps as he goes around. However, while we were going upwards his maps dropped and fell. Due to the strong wind, it didn't seem like he'd be able to collect them even if he went back down. He seemed sad.
I though about asking him if he wanted to come with us but he casually parted. Carrying three people as well as all the luggage would've been really tough, and travelling with an adult man is a bit scary after all.
I think he was probably a good person, though.
As we parted, he gave us his camera.
Let's use it bit by bit as we go. I'm happy we have another way besides this diary to record things.
Due to streetlights lighting up the upper layer, even though it was night it was a bright night.
I saw a dream again today. I was riding in our vehicle with Yuu like always but for some reason the city wasn't there.
Instead, there was a completely blue sky above us.
Like always, the two of us drove on endlessly.
- the endless blue sky

- halo
- strange patterns

(top right)
Inside a building that seemed like a temple, we discovered some statues of god. They were quite a bit larger than the ones outside. The flashing of the patterns in the background was slightly scary.
I don't know whether the world of the afterlife really exists or not but it'd be nice if there really were lots of plants and fish.
There were also small statues outside, including some that only came up to our waists.
- Yuu
For some reason there were some which had stones on their heads.
Yuu went around putting rocks on even more of them.
There might be something good about putting stones on top of them. I had the feeling that something would be called by that sort of charm.

We didn't really feel like moving today so we spent the day resting.
There are days like that too.
- There's a tower visible some distance away. If we climb it we can probably reach the upper layer.
I took a noontime nap. I saw a dream of the town where we were born. Although I see dreams of the past occasionally when I wake up I feel a bit sad. I suppose it's due to remembering a place I will never be able to touch again.
When both Yuu and I were small, we had a grandpa.
When I try, I can vaguely remember his room, but things which shouldn't really be there when I think about it appear there.
On a night with a bright moon, we stumbled across a strange drink. Beeu" was written on it. From a little while after drinking it, my memories are gone. I had a horrible headache when I woke up. Just what was that liquid, I wonder? But it did feel kinda good
such good episode
>memories are gone
And so is her virginity. I'm going to guess a lot of her diary entries will end with "It's best not to let Yuu __________ after all".

>"Is it because Chi-chan has seemed sad lately?"

>Several minutes later
>"Hey, Chi-chan? What do you think about?"

>"When you do it."
>Chito elbows her in the side. "Yuu! Don't ask that!"
>"Why not? It doesn't matter."
>"Because, it's... it... it really doesn't matter, does it?"
>Chito looks up into the dark
>"Nothing. I don't want to think about the future, or the past, or anything, so that's why I do it. To think about nothing."
>"Oh. Yuu thinks about Chi-chan."
>Chito turns red and rolls away
>Hey, you still want to feel good, right?"
>Yuuri slides over
>"I can do it."
>"It doesn't matter, does it?"
>She slips her hands under Chito's coat
>"Hehe, Chi-chan's still really warm."

I know it was going for peaceful and comforting, but this show has made me think about our future in a way that is definitely NOT.

>It often seems to me that sexual desire is the very essence of what it means to 'live', but that's too depressing so I become compelled to deny sexual desire completely. However, if I do that only values like 'nothingness' and 'death' remain, so I'm troubled.

>It is depressing to be afflicted by an emotion like 'lust' when I don't have any intention to do something like having kids.

>For people who revere homosexual love in media, I personally think it could be seen as a form of compromise or reconciliation of that dilemma.

>A work like 'Last Tour' featuring a male-female pair seems like it'd become incredibly irritating. 'What, are they Adam and Eve?', you'd think.

>In Ekuni Kaori's short story 'Sultry Night', a lesbian couple comments "There's nowhere left for us to go after this, huh? We're at a dead end." while holding hands, singing, drinking beer and walking through a town at night. I liked it very much.

Oh, so that's where he got the inspiration for this scene.
This whole story was incredibly comfy in general and I really like Tsukumizu's use of lighting and panels.
I never figure out whether the last panel is after kiss or about to kiss.
Because this is Yuuri's dream when they are at a movie theater and she fell asleep, I think we'll never know.
But considering mentioning getting married, as well as how close to /u/ this part was, we can only hope for a positive.

Just finished watching this. It was amazing, the last episode made me feel really emotional, especially the last scene with the mushrooms and the two of them gazing at each other for like ten seconds followed by lewd hand holding.
I never thought that embracing the feeling of hopelessness would be so sweet.

A real shame that /u/ didn't seem to care much about this show, while garbage like Two Slut got plenty of attention instead.
I'm positive plenty of people on here saw it and enjoyed it. Two Car just gets more attention because it has more pairings and its controversial nature leads to lots of arguments.

I'm guessing the rise of von Neumann machines, like the one the loli was holding in the video, had a lot to do with the end of the world.
I don't think it had anything to do with machines, machines are never portrayed as particularly bad. Its humans who go to war that caused all the problems, even the giant death robot that appeared was piloted by a human instead of an ai.

The final level on Herman Kahn's "Escalation Ladder" is "Spasm/Insensate War." That is, command and control ceases to exist (either due to being destroyed, or they pressed the buttons and went home) but military forces/societies continue to fight and destroy each other without reason, like how a scorpion or snake will continue to strike after being killed.
There's usually no home to go back to after pressing the button.

I haven't read the new chapters but hasn't the manga started moving towards a conclusion since the end of volume 4/the submarine?
Yup, after that its just them throwing away or destroying the various things they picked up or created on their journey so they can live just one more day. Their only goal is to reach the top layer, and now that they're there only despair awaits.

Nah. Make a new goal. Get back to ground level and see what else there is to do.
Finished this a couple of days ago and it gave me legit feels. Between this and other shows like Dragon maid, Flip Flappers and Princess Principal I feel like we are living in a golden age of anime.

I like to imagine they'll find a functioning ration production facility and settle there to live out their lives together.
None of those other shows are good though.
will anything romantic happen in these final chapters?
The goal of the top was to find people, but since the lower levels were told to be all dead, and now they're at the top and it's dead as well. There's no-one to find, and it's not like they'll repopulate the earth. From this point on their lives have no meaning except for each other and to just continue on day by day until they can't continue any longer.

Life had no meaning in the first place. The meaning is what you make it, so, if you have reached your goal, make a new goal. They've got a long while to live yet, so there's plenty more that could be done.

I say go back to the ground floor and go off into the woods. Find another city. Check it out.
>go off into the woods
The whole bit about humanity turning away from nature suggests that a "back to nature" ending is possible. but there might not be enough chapters left to start heading in that direction?

Yes, there are. Chito and Yuri are all that is needed. It doesn't need to have a meaning behind it. All that has to happen is for Yuri and Chito to decide to make a new meaning for their journey. All that they need is a new goal.
>I keep getting dubs while arguing for Existentialism
Well then...
that last manga chapter was great at least they are in a better place in potato heaven
So they died?
>literally nothing but snow on the top of the building
>they see other similar buildings from afar and there's nothing on them either
>no food, water or vehicles
>falling asleep in the snow after consuming their last rations

They're diejobu.

it's in moonrunes tho

You should have been ready for this. It's a natural conclusion to the series.

How much of the manga is translated?
>How much of the manga is translated?
All of it. The final chapter just needs to be typeset.
It's typeset and done on Batoto.
hey they could be OK,
I think it's pretty open-ended
I can't use Batoto, are there any others?
The key here is that the line about living being amazing was actually past tense. They knew what was coming. That said, it is left ambiguous, so it's possible the extra pages in Vol. 6 could be an epilogue.
The fact that they suddenly felt so sleepy and careless is a sign of severe hypothermia. Also, the fact that they used the past tense when they talked about how living was amazing and how they fell asleep out in the cold like that pretty much confirms that they silently agreed to let themselves freeze to death.
It's a pretty good way to go desu
Thanks, nee-san. Now I can feel closure. :'(
It's also worth noting that the raws don't actually have 'end' or 'fin' on the last page, which could be a hint there's an epilogue forthcoming or just wishful thinking.

/a/ said there will be extra pages in the last volume
It's a shit ton better than heatstroke.
GoT told me it was the most peaceful way to go.

Yeah but they aren't necessarily an epilogue. They could be a side-story or flashback.

>The best thing about the cold is... You don't have to worry about sunburn. Ever been to the desert? You'd hate it. It's so hot... you're always... sweating. You think you're melting, like butter. The desert is shit. Except for the stars. They're so close... You know?
The tower symbolizes life, the top is the ultimate destination all humans with no exceptions will reach, which is death, symbolized by the black (tomb)stone.
Maybe they made a mistake by climbing the tower, maybe they could have taken a different path and survive longer(or less, who knows), but in any case wanting to reach the top gave them something to live for, so they ended up enjoying every small thing they could find on their path because they wanted to survive, and so in the end they appreciated the miracle of being alive, despite their lives being ultimately meaningless.
That's beautiful.
If we're talking about real-life hypothermia then what about the part near the end where people rip off all their clothes because they feel like they're burning up.

>yfw it would have been more realistic if they fell asleep naked in each others arms.
>she takes her helmet off

It's the little things that get you.

Also you dramaqueen-sans are full of shit. They have food and water, are snugged up pretty warmly, and probably just wanted to sleep under the stars. They're going to wake up, but whether they can survive on one packet long enough to find another source of food is a different question. I would call it an ambiguous end.
They ran out of food entirely.
No, they have most of a packet that Yuu forgot she had because she thought it was explosives. They only ate two sticks of it.
Do you seriously think that their parkas and that blanket will protect them from dying of hypothermia? In a previous chapter they almost freeze to death and they weren't sleeping out in the open like that.
Their death is just the natural course of events anyway. The manga is called "Girls' Last Tour", and their tour is over. Better to die in your sleep than dying of starvation anyway.

But that's the problem, anon. Yuu will instinctively cradle Chii as the big spoon, embracing her tightly for comfort and love in her sleep. From the manga, it seems by the end of what happened in the anime, they're either the last two, or two of a very small number of lifeforms on the planet.

I don't know if the two of them are gay, but I certainly think their love would be romantic by the end, just because they're hormonal teenagers and two of the last people on the planet. Don't get me wrong I think they love each other, the show makes that clear after all.

Damn good show.
Well the guy didn't seem very optimistic about his chances of surviving long without his bike, and whatshername would have landed on the lowest level with basically nothing.

Still it seemed a bit too much of a coincidence that Chii-chan and Yuu managed to meet the only two other surviving humans in the city. It killed my immersion when the shrooms said that, since it seemed so absurd.

I'm not a fan of yuri tragedies, but I like this ending. They lived together, died together and get to be in the afterlife together, just the two of them.
If you build it, they will come.
I haven't watched this but I was always interested in it and watched these threads go by with interest. I would check the author's twitter and appreciate the odd style and occasional yuri doodles. But I don't think I can ever watch or read this, at least not for many years. Facing my ever-present mortality is already bad enough without also facing it as a lone potato.
It's a good show, don't be a wet blanket.
I dunno, I get it. I was in a pretty precarious place mentally a few years ago and I stayed away from things I thought were going to make me feel like shit, I can't fault it.

Hopfully things look up for you anon, it'll still be here later.
On the other hand, in the worst depths of my own suicidal depression from which I'm only now slowly crawling out, I watched/read more that was sad/heart rending/etc. I suppose everyone deals with it differently, but I think that the show is worth watching even if you're not feeling so bright.

>from which I'm only now slowly crawling out
Take me with you.
It probably depends heavily on how you're feeling as well. I swung from barely controlled rage to crying at everything and what I realised in retrospect were panic attacks so I really just wanted to avoid anything that would exacerbate it. Cross Ange coming out at the time was a fucking trip, let me tell you. Turned out some medication I was on for a physical thing was fucking my shit up. This does seem fairly comfy despite all odds though, I think especially with the epilogue pages.
It's hard enough to do it for myself - took more or less the destruction of who I was by my own hands, and even now I'm left dealing with the scraps and painfully piecing things together. I can't take you on this journey, you have to do it yourself. Be prepared to brutally deny yourself/face the deepest parts of you you don't want to see, and burn everything down until you can recover slowly.

That's how it had to happen for me, anyway. There was no hope until I fell fully into the blackest despair.

That, or you can try to live like these two cute potatoes - thinking of nothing but the very next day, the very small things that give you joy, and where to take your Kettenkrad next

Not the other nee-san, but I deal with mine by ignoring it and focusing on anything else. Probably won't work for most people, sure, but it could help. Mostly I get autistic over things like yuri, metal, and weapons. I find that getting angry with the music (metal) is better than being sad. I've also learned to just be apathetic to everything when I can't ignore how much I fail at life.
I'm interested in reading this regardless of the yuri because it looks cool. Still, my /u/ side has to ask: does this have subtext at least? Are there some gay moments or is it just a close friendship?
Yeah, that's the way I used to try to live and it worked alright. Yuri waifus here I come.
At the end of the anime there is some. Also that time they got drunk.
Starting my read-through of vol. 6 today... even the simplest dialogue hits harder when you know what comes in the end. I bet this series is totally transformed on the second read.

>I bet this series is totally transformed on the second read.
You're probably right. I loved these girls too much to watch them die twice, so I'm not sure if I'll ever reread.
Finished reading vol. 6... I don't even know the words to describe this feeling. Cried twice, but before that I felt awe and the joy of life all over again.

To be honest I felt the same way at first, but then I was reminded that this series is really too good to be consigned to the mists of memory. I don't know when, but I think the earlier chapters will definitely be worth experiencing again.

A few things came to mind as I came to the end of the volume:
1. This was the first afterword pic which featured Chito and Yuuri instead of Gon (tkmiz's dog) and tkmiz's avatar. The pic is definitely appropriate, but it makes me wonder in the end how much impact Gon's disappearance really had on the story. (As mentioned in previous threads, he disappeared the month before the Kettenkrad story).

2. There were a couple of sidestories which were never scanlated nor collected into tankoubon (and even appear to have been unlinked from the main SSR manga page, so it seems like they might disappear any second).
The first contains a bit of lore about robot hieroglyphs which seems like it could have minor importance to the story; while the second contains some cute yuri-ish (?) mother-father roleplay. It'd be a bit concerning if these were lost.
One of the anthology chapters is about what if Chito and Yuri live in a more normal world. They are a lesbian couple in that world. It's as explicit as it gets.
I've seen a theory that the cube was a teleporter and they somehow activated it while they slept
It's a theory I like to believe, for one.
There is that possibility, in this panel you can still see the girls sleeping along side the cube. In the next few panels we see the cube doing some sort of computer thing, remember super advance robots in the future tend to be square, and the girls are later seen in a field of wheat. However...
...in the final panel you can still see the spiral stares but the cube and the girls are gone. Could it be that time has pass and even the cube decayed away? But why would the stairs which is more vulnerable to the harsh environment remain perfectly intact. Maybe the cube is some sort of arc? One that can only accept the very last of humanity and created to give humanity a 2nd chance? The ironic thing in this theory is that it’s two girls so humanity is kinda fucked.

That's the back cover of the volume. Chito and Yuuri are on the front (obscuring the box behind them).

The inner cover is a copy of the outer cover with only Chito and Yuuri's footsteps remaining. You can see the box from the front side.

I also took a look at >>2573516, with the higher resolution Kindle raws. Initially I thought the girls actually had disappeared in this scene, but you're right that the lower-right black mound is them under their blanket.

The inner cover is kind of curious in that although it's a direct reference/comparison to the outer cover, illustrating the concept that the girls are now gone, it achieves this via their absence vs a depiction of their remains or dead bodies.
>>2573566 (cont'd)
I don't buy into any physical/physical "teleportation" theory because that's inconsistent with the level of technology portrayed within the series. The story does make reference to Schopenhauer's "The World as Will and Representation", though
(the book Chito picked up at the start of ch. 45, "Library"), which lends itself to a more metaphysical interpretation.

According to Schopenhauer, the entire world of percieved phenomena (time, space, causality etc.) is all merely the projection/representation of a singular will (the "will to life"). Human wills/consciousness themselves are also further shards/expressions of that will -- in the end we are all facets of a singular, unified phenomena that is the basis of all things.

In chapter 46 ("Silence"), Chito experiences the unification of her consciousness, first with Yuu, then gradually the universe. The depiction of Chito/Yuu as "gone" without "dying" could be an expression that they are part of the core underlying principal of the universe (the "will to life"), and thus maybe part of us even if they no longer exist in the story.

In January, about 5 days after the last chapter was posted, tkmiz tweeted "As for Chito and Yuuri, they're next to me eating pot-au-feu."
I think that's in support of the theory that Chito and Yuuri exist wherever we want them to.
Got a link? Were the anthology chapters posted online?

>and thus maybe part of us even if they no longer exist in the story.
>I think that's in support of the theory that Chito and Yuuri exist wherever we want them to.
I think that's true of good fiction, and good characters, regardless of anything to do with Schopenhaur (not that the connection isn't interesting) and I'd say that SSR definitely reaches that point, at least for me. The series is exactly the kind of thing that stays with you for years, and keeps you thinking.
So how the hell did they end up in the Elysian Fields? Aren’t the girls Buddhists? Will they get to meet Xena?
- They died a warrior's death worthy of the Gods.
- Only that Greek afterlife is real.
- The cube was an experiment to reach afterlives and was keyed to the Fields.
- The cube was a work of Hephaestus. See above.
I'm not saying "they're finally home", because for them home is wherever the other is.
They’re family but more like sisters, which is why I kinda have a hard time reading the smut here. It is also obvious that Yuu was into Kanazawa.
>is also obvious that Yuu was into Kanazawa.
What the fuck? Those are some strong het googles.
>It is also obvious that Yuu was into Kanazawa

Then Chii must be quite the siscon considering that she has lewd dreams about Yuu "eating" her, not to mention the one in the anthology.

A reminder that you're retarded, nee-chan. In the normal world, they're lesbians too.

Could be Norse, too.
The Folkvang (Field of the People), lorded over by Freya, is a place for honourable people that die and don't really deserve to go to Helheim

Don't you notice his art? Or the note at the end? Or the tag? That anthology chapter was written by him, but I don't know if it's canon since the end is a bit weird, I mean finding a cinema in a destroyed city
>Can't even recognize the author's own art and his note at the end
It's canon

I haven't watched/read the series yet but I enjoyed reading this a lot. I like it when a work can be read into like that.

I liked this even more. The author's twitter is basically 75% weirdness and 25% yuri so I'm not surprised but it is cool to see something that blatant for them.
I don't think the shrooms have perfect knowledge, is the thing. They're moving up, like Chii and Yuu, and they said that that their food source was also waning: both of those things suggest that they haven't been to the lower levels in a while. God only knows how long it took for them to digest those nukes. So, we don't have much information on how good the shroom's intel actually is re: the other characters Chi and Yuu met earlier. They're probably dead, and the shroom's intel reinforces that, but Chi and Yuu will probably never know for sure and neither will we. By the same token, there might've been more survivors Chi and Yuu might've missed that they'll never meet (so there's no reason to think that the people they met were also the third and fourth people left on earth).

The purpose of the shrooms' saying this is to reinforce the impression we had at the beginning of the show that was shaken somewhat by the introduction of more characters: that there is a very real chance that Chi and Yuu are the last two humans that will ever exist.
Big news, guys! Chi and Yuu aren't dead. Tkmiz just announced it!
