Child units can't work without time travel or a time skip within the story.

Their survival skills aren't that bad either.Landy needs a party built around them to make the most used out of them and their links unless you go the Break route but that isn't good until level 40.Highlander is mostly single target DPS but they provide good line buffs in the form of Bloody Offense and Blood Fortune.Pugilist isn't much of a damage dealer anymore. They're mostly for binds but Gunner out does them in that regard.Shogun is mostly used for their Great General buff being the strongest buff in the game. Their damage output isn't that bad either once they get to level 40 but they want to be in a party with Sovereign due to their skills mostly being weapon element.Ronins have great DPS early game with Air Blade and their Break is the best in the game to get out of tight spots. Later they get awkward to use due to their negative stance duration skills but they still provide good damage.Nightseeker lands ailments really well and once they get to level 20 they start doing a ton of damage with Shadow Bite and Foul Mastery.

A smaller number of more focused supports makes for better chances to make each support chain meaningful for character interaction.
