The game probably rounds/truncates the actual numbers. A 90% decrease means a perfect 0 can never be achieved, so there's still the lingering chance of getting a 0.4/0.9 depending on how the game operates.

I don't know shit about coding and I'm just going by basic math so I might be totally wrong.

>people think that round based games represent the 100% reality and combat inside of the game

Do you think in FF7 they stand lined up to their enemies and wait turns? It's only for the gameplay. The actual fighting does look different in this world. This is why you can't just use a phoenix feather to raise dead.

XCOM thread? I gave LW2 another shot over the last week and eventually gave up again. I appreciate what they tried to do with making the strategic gameplay more complex, but they dump a whole bunch of concepts on you with very little explanation or data to base your choices on. And every mistake you make could potentially sunk your campaign tens of hours later.

It's a shame really. I like the tactical changes other than over-reliance on stealth in early game.

Morrowind is a little odd because it does show your character physically hitting enemies when you miss, they just don't play the knocked back animation.

>>
>>374544104
Kek. More often than not my shots hit the enemy or his fuckbuddy standing one cell beside him.
>>
>>374543863
The problems start in the mid-game.

In my first campaign I failed because I missed the liberation chain and lost to the invisible avatar timer.
My second campaign was abandoned after advent strength got unbearable to deal with.

Apparently you need to skip or do the missions in different regions to balance enemy force and prevent them from become too strong in one region. Also, there are certain mission types that become available or not depending on the number of people on specific jobs.

My complaint is that reading wiki and even game files is essential to make informed choices. Much of this information needs to be accessible in-game. You can't even learn from your own mistakes if their result happens many hours after the choices you made with no indication of what caused them.

The real problem with XCOM's RNG is that it doesn't have enough of it to even out into a proper bellcurve, and single dicerolls can cause huge swings for no reason. Also no real shot ballistics and giving gigantic enemies "defense" that somehow makes them harder to hit because of reasons, both of which break immersion and make everything look like random bullshit.

>>
>>374545095
Then you should know that probability is something you use before an action to get a perspective on what might happen, not some fatalistic truth that you apply in reverse after something has already happened. 1 black ball in a bag with 10 000 white ones doesn't give a 50/50 chance of pulling out the black one, but I guess that's the thinking that keeps the lottery companies in business, "there's an equal chance that I'll either win or lose!"
>>
>>374542357

It makes everything worse.

If it's in your game's mechanics, it's 100%, unquestionably a mistake. You've made your game worse by including it, and it would be better if you sat down and came up with a reliable system to replace it.

If it's in content generation (procedurally-generated levels, randomized enemy placements, etc.) then it's still worse than if you had actually planned something out, but considering that there's a limited number of levels you would have the time to make vs. an unlimited number that can be created via randomness, it's more understandable.
>>
What are some games that have RNG that's good and without it would greatly degrade the game's quality?

Depends how it's used, some games take it to the extreme and make it the biggest factor in gameplay, such as Xcom
Daily reminder that nu-xcom is absolute garbage, it lacks any form of innovation from the older games, it lacks a proper ballistic system and the cover mechanics are dumbed down to 4 states: fulll cover, half cover, flanked and no cover

black desert online has a armor/weapon upgrade system where the chance of a successful upgrade decreases with every level, a failed upgrade will lead to lowered durability which can only be fixed by going to a smith and repairing it with another similar armor/weapon to fix it
but when the item level reaches 15 the item will then completely disappear from your inventory if you fail the upgrade
but failing an upgrade also increases the chances of the next upgrade to be successful so you have to continually try to get the success chance up to 30 (i.e. 30 failed upgrades) for a guaranteed upgrade on a 15+ item, and if the item has an upgraded rarity (white=normal, green=less normal, blue=rare, yellow=more rare, orange=super rare), if you fail to upgrade an item that is of a higher rarity you will need another item of the same rarity to fix its durability

Tbh its still not perfect, actual stealth in the game is less about sneaking and more about waiting until there is no one in the vicinity, because randomly generated levels usually shit out an empty long corridor or giant hall with just two benches as hiding places, also surveillance cameras being 100% static and doing nothing else but +1 to alarm is really not engaging.

This is beautiful.

Only in 1

But then again it wasn't actually capped at 95%. It would go up to 99% but said 95% so you wouldn't feel AS bad if it missed.

flashbang followed with grenades or run a ranger up for a point blank shotgun, of course the sad thing is you need to waste a scope on a shotgun because if you don't it's only a 84% chance to hit. so pretty much gotta try to bring 2 flashbangs if codexes are possible (thank god for shadow chamber)

It certainly ruined Hearthstone, that's for sure.

Wut?
Cameras constantly send your position to nearest guard.

What? RNG is the exact opposite of having control, fucking retard.

All enemies in nu-xcom automatically know where all your soldiers are unless they're stealthed.

It's literally a copypasta that's in every one of these threads.
Lurk

One of the things LW2 did right was to scrap this and implement the yellow alert system, where pods follow their patrol paths unless they hear or see you.

Your roll out come is auto saved under the hood so reloading won't give you a different result. It isn't the SNES era anymore son where that would have worked.

Fucking hell with every single one of you
>>
>>374553089
I done this a couple of times as well, instead of rage quitting I'll start save scumming and find a way to fuck the ayys, usually happens when I get people wounded for painstakingly setting up a point blank chain shot/ rapid fire/rupture which misses at 90%+, and I've also noticed that in these save scum scenarios it's common that someone with a 30% chance to hit that I'd never ever take unless I was save scumming, will actually hit their target, it literally just feels like the RNG shoving his middle finger in your asshole. I mean it's possible that it is in fact random, but it rarely rewards you for playing well, that really really important 90 % will be guaranteed to miss anyway
>>
>>374553992

Depends on the dev then, cause recent Fire Emblem games save your roll.

Did you even fucking play them? You can re-roll in FE for new rolls and have been able too since the first game.

You think RNG is your ally? You merely adopted the RNG. I was born in it, molded by it. I didn't see pregenerated story missions until I was already a champion of the Dark Gods, by then they were nothing to me but CASUALSHIT!

The RNG betrays you, because it belongs to me.
