I'm a newcomer to the genre, just finished up my first metroidvania (pic related) and I need some more. Here's what I've heard I should try so far:
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Ori and the Blind Forest
Super Metroid (no shit)
What are some other good ones? Bonus for any game I can emulate at a high performance, currently a poorfag
>>
If you can ignore the meme posters, Guacamelee is actually a fun game.
>>
>>387036974
just finished Salt and Sanctuary, it's pretty good if you can live with the flash-tier aesthetic.
>>
Ori is more platformer than it is metroidvania.
>>
Just go play Super Metroid already and stop dealing with these knockoffs
>>
>>387036974
The la-la remake is on GOG and is one of the most detailed and biggest metroidvanias ever, at the expense of being difficult enough at points to undermine the fun.

As for Castlevania, you can easily emulate Dawn of sorrow and Aria of sorrow. Both are fun, but SoTN is still probably better than both (I forgot which one was the GBA one, start with that).

Play Super Metroid.

It's rare that I agree with basically everything on a tier list, but there it is
>>

Sundered
Valdis Story
Momodora
Dead Cells
You can't go wrong with the 3 DS Castlevanias
Aria of Sorrow is great; the two other GBA Castlevanias may be an acquired taste

Super Metroid has great level design but its physics are floaty and sluggish. I would have to recommend basically all other 2D Metroid games that came after it, as well as Prime 1-3, over it.

What is this supposed to show ?

If you wanted to prove how the game can be bullshit you should have posted a map of chamber of birth.

Obligatory mention that the first two games are freeware, the first is a cave stort clone, the second one is a metroidvania.
>>

You should try The Lecarde Chronicles 2. It's like a really good version of Castlevania 2. Easily better than, say, PoR.

>>
>>387039603
It's the style of animation, that kinda awkward tweening was used heavily by flash games and cartoons so people associate it with them. The game's also muddy, blurry and bloom heavy to the point where you can't see shit half the time.
>>

>>

>>
>>387042664
I like nonlinear exploration, it's a shame most games in the genre shit the bed when it comes to it. Having a lot of cool gear and such to play around with helps too, that's why I like Castlevania games a lot despite them being mediocre in other areas.
>>
>>387036974
Don't play Ori and expect it to be anything like HK. The similarity ends at making progress expands your ability set and they're both in 2D
>>
Cave story is legendary-tier. Think you can still get the original as free-ware or buy the plus version on steam. The game feels so tight.

Hollow knight bored me after 4 hours. You basically have one attack and a few special power up attacks. Exploration was decent but that was about it.

AM2R is amazing. And its free.

Salt and sanctuary is a flash game

Axiom Verge - i personally did not like it. Too many "rooms", that served as connectors. Felt like the map was too big, but also empty if that makes sense.

Dust is the most cringe-worthy game I've ever played, and hardly a "metroidvania" game. Avoid.

Your best bet is to emulate the classics. SM, SoTN, castlevania IV - and go from there.

20xx is also pretty great I hear, but its status as a metroidvania is up for debate.
>>
>>387042905
>Salt and sanctuary is a flash game
Nice meme, it's actually a pretty well rounded game despite its ugly art style with a lot of cool gear and builds you can go with.
>>
>>387042664
Meme answer, but it depends on how the exploration flows and how memorable the map is, basically good world and level design. You shouldn't need a map screen to remember where you can go after getting abilities.
Plus the music should to be good.
>>
>>387042664

1. Since most Metroidvanias aren't very challenging, players are given more time and space to appreciate other facets of the game more, like the graphical details and the BGM.

2. Unless you have OP gear or stats, it's pretty hard to sleepwalk through Metroidvanias, especially the modern ones.
>>

Name a better mechanic in recent memory.

It's a timing-sensitive combination of a melee attack, projectile attack, parry, and movement mechanic that also lets you briefly slow down time during fast gameplay segments. It's the best thing about Ori's combat AND Ori's platforming.

>>
>>387051101
It's got a vaguely bullet-hell-ish thing going on with the combat. The downside is, it uses cooldown timers on everything as a part of its mechanics, which makes the melee combat extremely tedious, especially early-game.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ImVEXaphOFE
>>
>>387051501
It's a sidescrolling 2D platforming-action game set in a single, unbroken, interconnected level where your ability to progress is tied to unlocking movement abilities and then returning to impassable segments to explore in different directions.

In what way is it NOT a metroidvania.
>>
>>387036974
I believe Rain World also falls in the genre?

Though the difficulty in Rain World is the environment while in HK it's the bosses.

>>387044172

The best map is White Palace and it closes off after you beat it.
Infected Crossroads blocks out a key path to and from the Stag Station which makes traversing it extremely tedious
Too many secret areas behind destroyable walls which aren't visually different from normal walls (I don't mean the usual ones, I mean the really bullshit ultra-secret stuff like Hornet's Room
>>
>>387037389
Basically agree on almost everything here.

Also I saw someone mentionning the Prime series, but I'm conflicted about them. They're great games and somehow maintain a metroidvania vibe and progression, but the 3D / FPS parts make them hard to incorporate into that specific genre. I don't know.

Stop with this fucking meme already. There's nothing wrong with the physics in Super Metroid you retarded faggot. You're on an alien planet, the gravity is supposed to be lower than earth's. The only legitimate flaw with the gameplay is the equipment switching, and even then it's a minor nuisance at worst.
>>
>>387051726
Well for one you can't go back to many areas after a certain point and the path is always incredibly obvious, the emphasis is clearly on one of platforming over exploration.
>>
>>387052478
>you can't go back to many areas after a certain point
I think that's only true of the flooded ginso tree, and Definitive Edition essentially fixes it by putting a fast travel pad in there.

I'll agree that the path is usually pretty obvious, but I don't know if that really invalidates the argument that it's a Metroidvania. With the exception of once (since I didn't realize you could buy the light source) I never didn't know where to go next in Hollow Knight and everyone seems to love that game.

>I never didn't know where to go next in Hollow Knight
But the game leaves everything entirely up to the player, if you aren't meticulous in your searching then sometimes you'll not remember where to go next. If someone didn't explore the top right corner of the Forgotten Crossroads and notice that the floor crumbles at the dead end then they'll never be able to put two and two together when they finally get the Desolate Dive. You are also constantly rewarded for backtracking with new upgrades, you get to Lake of Unn very early on in the game but can't do anything until you get Isma's Tear which is quite a ways down the road.

Ori really doesn't have any of this and them fixing gating you off from locations in the rerelease doesn't change anything if the game isn't designed with the player backtracking in mind by putting new shortcuts or items to reward them for doing such. I'm not saying it doesn't have any elements in common with a Metroidvania but it seems to be far closer to a 2D platformer than a Metroidvania.
>>
I've actually struggled alot with the exploration aspect in Super Metroid where there were a few times I had to look shit up in a guide. Would I still suck ass trying out other Metroidvanias?
>>
>>387053386
Depends, Maridia is the only part in Super Metroid I would consider to be designed in an unintuitive way to the player. So if you had to look up a guide for stuff outside Maridia a lot then yes you would probably suck ass.
>>
>>387052459
>theres nothing wrong with the controls because theyre SUPPOSED to be floaty shit
>>
>>387053386
If it's a problem for you, keep a notebook or something so you don't have to remember. Otherwise most newer MVs have good enough map systems that you can at least beat them without needing to remember too much.
>>
>>387049230
Its only flaw is its stupidly short.
>>
>>387053386
Depends on which game. Something like Guacamelee is pretty much totally linear with no exploration, and games like Environmental Station Alpha mark your map with where you're supposed to go and let you figure out how to get there or go a different way if you want. Don't write off the genre altogether if you don't like being lost, just learn a little about the game before you make a purchase.
>>
>>387053589
>Otherwise most newer MVs have good enough map systems that you can at least beat them without needing to remember too much.
So does Super Metroid.
>>
>>387053620
Nah it has many flaws. Some of the traps and platforming are janky, like half of the bosses are bad and can be utterly broken with items and the combat is pretty tedious. The dev seems to think that you can make up for damage sponge enemies by adding an obnoxious amount of screen shake and hit pause.
>>
>>387052297
>spoiler
Elaborate, I was told this game didn't have a bunch of cryptic breakable wall secrets in it.
>>
>>387053386
Huh. Peculiar. I actually feel like Super Metroid is pretty much the most 'linear' metroidvania I've played. It's not linear in a strict sense, but I feel like the worldmap was crafted in such a way that it pretty much guides you along to where you are supposed to go next. Like how you end up on the overworld again after you get the grapple and the powerbombs so you can go explore the wrecked ship. Which then, if you follow it all the way through, leads you to Meridia, where you can now go further with the Gravity Suit. I never felt lost, but I didn't feel cheated out of exploration either. It's probably by far the best point of that games' design.

I've yet to play a Metroidvania with non linearity baked into the main game on a blind playthrough, every game usually has an intended linear path but you can almost always deviate from it when you learn more mechanics (Wall Jumping in SM or using downward strikes in HK to get across spikes). They're always intended to guide you along a path through the way they're set up.
>>
>>387036974
When you download that Super Metroid ROM set aside s copy in a folder for when you beat it.

Not strictly true, once you unlock the i-frame dash you can get past them, you don't need Void Heart
>>
Ori is more of a puzzle platformer with exploration than a metroidvania. Very solid though.
>>
>>387056997

Its ok if my first game was one of the PS2 castlevanias?
>>
>>387056651
Is Fog Canyon an optional area then?
>>
>>387056871
hmm. will keep in mind. i'm going to try the mednafen core for retroarch first since i've already got RA setup on my steamlink.
>>
>>387057045
Yeah you don't need Void Heart, I was referring to the Shadow Dash because acquiring that also has you like dumping yourself into that Abyss stuff

I think that tier list has finally been perfected
>>
>>387057213
No, but you can get to pretty much all of it once you can swim in acid, including the non-optional part.
>>
>>387057317
Are there any optional areas or is the entire map covered in a play through? I just got to Crystal Peak so I assume I'm not very far in but this game seems huge.
>>
>>387057124
They're not "Metroidvanias" really.
>>
>>387057453
Yeah there's quite a few areas you don't need to go to honestly.

Though I think there's only 2 you can completely ignore even when going for the true ending.

Crystal Peak I'd say is about the start of the midgame, usually? Depends on if you've been to the City yet.

>>387057734
>Depends on if you've been to the City yet.
You mean the City of Tears? I went there encountered Hornet and fought the Soul Master to get that move that lets me break fragile surfaces. Also is the true ending easy to obtain without a guide?
>>
>>387057895
>Also is the true ending easy to obtain without a guide?

Eh. It's doable I'd say. The last step is pretty obtuse/well hidden though, but the steps before that are all stuff you'd find yourself if you're exploring and thinking well.

Try out Rain World, although it's very difficult it's pretty fun until you get to Farm Arrays.
>>

This.

Figuring out how to farm Essence for the Dream Nail is something you'll get on your own
Figuring out that you need to use the Dream Nail on the King's corpse to unlock the Kingsoul should hopefully not be too hard for the curious.
Figuring out that you have to wear the Kingsoul into the abyss to unlock the Void Heart feels like complete trial and error, though.
>>
>>387057734
I think it's possible to completely skip the Blue Lake, Howling Cliffs, and the Hive but I'm pretty sure all the rest is mandatory.
>>
>>387037389
Yes, outside some "I disagre slightly but I can see how other pepople may put it here" cases, this is pretty much a perfect tierlist.
>>
>>387058901
Royal Waterways are completely optional
>>
>>387058901
Pretty sure you can skip The Abyss, Kingdom's Edge, and Queen's Gardens if you're not going for the true ending.
>>
>>387053980
There's a handful of super hidden rooms whose only purpose is to be interesting.

If it's useful to gameplay it's generally not well hidden
>>
>>387037389
Sundered fell for the rogue-lite procedural generation meme and ended up mediocre. Put it in meh tier.

is Hollow Knight a decent entry point for the genre? i know i probably should play Castlevania or SM first but i really like the hand-drawn style and art of Hollow Knight
>>
>>387059612
It's a good game, you don't really need an "entry point". If you like the look of it then go for it.
>>
>>387059612
It's a great game and a good introduction to the genre, but bear in mind that it's not really noob-friendly because of its huge-ass world and mapping mechanics.
If you don't mind being lost, then go for it.
>>
>>387052060
The game was alright but then again I like the source material so I feel like I may be biased. It did a great job at making you feel like a badass when you play well, very unlike that video you posted what the shit.
>>
>>387060098
>mapping mechanics.
What's wrong with Cornifer? He hums and leaves paper trails.
>>
>>387060310
he gets stuck in one of the first levels of the game behind a barrier you can't get through until you're more than halfway through it ?
>>
>>387039230
The thing I absolutely love about La Mulana is just how far you can go without ever fighting any of the bosses and then kicking their shit in with weapons you should normally only have towards the end of the game.
>>
>>387060402
I'll be honest, I have no idea what you're talking about.
>>
>>387060402
You don't need a map for fog canyon until later in the game tho. Plus by the time you need it you have the ability to get it.
>>
>>387060629
Pretty sure that's in the fog canion.

>>387060801
This may be true but god damn is it annoying to hear the smug bastard hum when you're as autistic as I am about not leaving things behind.
