AHOY

First time playing this game, saw /v/ recommend it a bunch, and, should I play with oddities xp setting, or just go normal for my first time?

Is it harder/frustrating to go with oddities, or is the choice just based on immersion more?

Also, general Underrail thread, talk about all sorts of stuff related to it
>>
>>390173623
Go with oddities, it's the experience system the game is meant to be played with. Classic is kind of like a legacy, it came first, and the dev figured there was no reason to scrap it since some people might prefer it. But it's not balanced very well, and most players who go with classic but don't rush the game tend to hit level cap around 2/3 through.

What build are you planning to roll?
>>
>>390173623
>should I play with oddities xp setting, or just go normal for my first time?
Oddity is recommended for multiple reasons.

It's how the game is supposed to be played. Normal XP is more of a legacy system and is pretty unbalanced, you will reach max level way too quickly. Other than that oddity encourages exploration and allows you to level up without forcing you to be a murderhobo killing everything in his path.

>Is it harder/frustrating to go with oddities, or is the choice just based on immersion more?
You will level slower with oddity, but it's more balanced. It's arguably more frustrating to reach the max level early and have no progression for the rest of the game.

Go normal. I fell for the oddities meme and it sucks dick. It's only useful if you decide to play as a stealth thief. For anything else, it just makes everything feel meaningless.

Also, do yourself a favor and get cheat engine and configure it to use a speed up hack. The backtracking in this game is fucking awful. Nothing has been this bad since Morrowwind and at least that had the boots of blinding speed.

On another note, I think sniper rifles got to be the most customizable weapon in the entire game. I don't think any other weapon can have its behaviour changed as drastically as sniper rifles.

You can make a traditional sniper rifle that shoots only once per turn with very high close range/move penalties that is capable of dealing over 3000 damage in one shot, therefore capable of 1-shoting literally everything in the game.

Or a more tactical sniper rifle that shoots twice per turn with relatively low penalties (as low as 15% move and 12.5% close range so comparable to crossbows) that will probably cap at 1000-1500 or so, not enough for the toughest enemies.

Or anything in between. I like that.
>>
>>390191730
I recognize that screenshot and file name from /indie/
>>
>>390190520
Acid pistol alone? You can get by, but not all that great.

Chem/Energy pistol combined on the other hand is incredibly fun. Mad Chemist Incendiary Pistols are unbeatable when it comes to setting things on fire, nothing else can give you 80+% chance with every shot. Cryo is slightly less good, but still basically a better Cryokinesis with chance to freeze. Add in Electroshock pistols for chain lighting, and you have a really fucking fun repertoire with energy/acid/heat/cold/electric damage and a wide range of status effects to play with.
>>
>>390190520
Sadly among the weakest in the entire game. Your damage output will be low, I'm talking one of the lowest possible. You will also need to find a way to deal with acid-immune or resistant enemies such as mutants, deep worms, majority of robots, CAU if you join the drones, etc.

>>390191842
You could also recognize it from daily Underrial threads on /v/ from 2 years ago.
>>
>>390190520
Acid/incediary/electro for CC, amplified plasma pistol for killing. Make sure to take a healthy dose of throwing. Grenadier and 3 pointer really round out the build.

There are tons of ways to protect yourself from all of those even if you fail to kill everyone.

If you must hit absolutely every hit and kill everyone in the first turn in order to stay alive, you are simply bending RNG to your side to compensate for the shortcomings of your build.

Yeah, pistol buils is arguably the best build against Carnifex since you can reach enough initiative to always act first.

Hard to say. It has a classless system and one of the strongest points of the game is that you can make literally dozens of builds with vastly different playstyles.

Pure psi, psi monk, sniper, metal armor assault rifle , SMG, pistol, crossbow, pure unarmed, sledgehammer, knife, energy pistol, chemical pistol, pure throwing, I could go on and on. Then there are different types of armors, combining different weapon types, adding some psi only to support your main weapon, traps, stealth, etc.

It was hilarious when I realised what was happening, I didn't anticipate at all that I would actually become too good at killing people, especially since I made the mistake of my first crafted rifle having a compensator.
Luckily by the time I realised how good smart modules were the problem had mostly resolved itself, but the midgame where I was reliably hitting 2-3 people per burst was the best.

No, I'm just kidding - I won't be that obsessed with reloading, I'll just try a couple times for fun and then keep going with my playthrough. I'm used to retrying for an event with low odds but I should get around to actually finishing the game this playthrough.

I dunno, being killed by ironheads and/or eaten by lurkers and/or raped by lunatics seems worse. Protectorate prevents that, drones make it happen.

I just completed the game. I played a psionic punching monk with high crafting skills. The game was pretty hard around the middle, but I was an murderous barbarian at the end. Very, very strong build.

Overall, this is an extremely hard game. It's like none other. They really throw a lot of shit at you near the end. (I liked Deep Caverns a lot. Fuck the haters. The atmosphere was top tier.)

Whatever you want. Metal armor assault rifle and pure psi are among the strongest and most straight-forward.

In a recent patch, Styg made it easier to befriend the Faceless. Specifically, the encounter at Rail Crossing doesn't hurt you. You can be friends with them as long as you help the 2 patrols. That's it.

If you accomplish that, they tell you critical plot information about the origins of the Faceless and Tchort.

>>
>>390211801
As long as you put some effort into making a working build and understand the game mechanics you will be fine.

As long as you don't do something stupid like a 3 STR sledgehammer build or a gun build with no points in guns, anything is viable.
>>
>>390211906
Psi monk sounds better than a psi martial artist.
>>
>>390183008
Can't you press a button on your keyboard to highlight them all?
>>
>>390211801
No, not any kind, although an experienced player could probably do it with anything.

Minmaxing and metagaming is not necessary, but you should have a focus and remember that what you build is what you'll have to play. Think about how your build is going to play before you settle on one. Don't pick sledgehammers if you want something more creative than hitting things until they die, don't pick traps if sneaking around and turning the place into a minefield before engaging the enemy doesn't sound like your thing, and so on.

Have a general idea about the archetype, like 'I want to be a psyker' or 'I want to tank and gun', then understand which attributes, skills, and feats will help you with that. Make sure to browse the complete feat list to get a general idea about their pre-requirements and at what point they'll become available to you.

Other than that, just try to have fun.

The game tracks the number of Faceless you have killed, but this is not used for your reputation with them or for anything else. Yet.

Feats are Taste for Blood, Locus of Control, Combo, Vile Weaponry, Expose Weakness, Fancy Footwork, Premeditation, Lightning Punches, Nimble, and Sprint.

You want 10 WIS and 14 DEX to make all that work. With 14 DEX, you can equip a fist weapon and attack like 12 times per round, doing crazy damage with all your unarmed feats.

My skills were Melee, Thought Control, Psychokineses (max all 3 of these combat skills), Tailoring (for crafting fist weapons and light armor), Electronics (for shields and augmenting fist weapons), Mechanics, Hacking, and Lockpicking.

Locus of Control and Mind Control spells make combat an absolute joke. You incapacitate entire teams of enemies, then close in and pulverize. ALWAYS keep Force Emission on, light armor, and equip a power fist and shield. PULVERIZE.
>>
>>390219347
You don't have to kill them though, you just need to get out of there alive and preferably still human.
>>
Is anything gonna transfer to the expansion as far as plot choices go? I was thinking about playing again doing stuff I hadn't done before. My first playthrough heavy armor AR was so awful, just tank pray'n'spray with sprint being my holy grail ability.
>>
>>390215576
I'm telling you, Styg just patched it. Now helping the 2 patrols ALONE will befriend them and give you the plot information. You do not to get all 3 events, but I think you need to save both patrols.

I just went through this and got the plot info, and went on a murderous rampage in Rail Crossing earlier.
>>
>>390217338

I am 100% sure that if you help the faceless at foundry and core city, and then kill every other faceless you find until the deep cavers you still get friendly with them and can get the info

just make sure you talk to them before you talk to the tchorists in the deep caverns

Styg himself said it in a forum post, but it's not in the patch notes. I think he believed the Rail Crossing event locked too many people out of plot-critical information.

The faceless are extremely practical and pragmatic. The death of the mindreader does not ruin your potential neutral/friendly disposition with the Faceless later on in the game. However, if you are going to fuck with the Faceless, buzzer's shop should be the only time.

>>
>>390223560
Not much really, it's near impossible to build full psi wrong unless you go full retard.

Start with 10 WILL, max all three schools. There. That's it.

For a slightly more complicated answer, exactly how you want to build it depends on whether you want to go psychosis or tranquility. Tranquility works best as a stealthy, mobile fast cannon that doesn't get hit, psychisus make great tanks.

But this is just a general rule, people have made very effective tranquility tanks and glass cannon psychos before. So feel free to build whatever you want.

Must have feats are Premeditation and Locus of Control, rest is free choice, depending on your build.

Just because you take a vest or riot armor doesn't mean you will be tanking anything, psi more than gives you enough tools to never have to take a hit

and i honestly don't get why would anybody use survival instincts, you never want to be on 30% hp on purpose, not even for 30% crit, hell with more damage you don't really need to crit more than once and thats why you have the crit on demand talent

even if you were trying to get more crits, electrostatic electricity is probably more than enough and doesn't put you in the risk of being in low hp

>>390226793
Not directly but there are hints.
>>
>>390226712

you get 10% of your psychokinesis as synergy for both thought control and metathermics

Its also incredibly important since it improves the damage from both electrokinesis and electrokinetic imprint which are basically your only way of dealing with robots and turrets besides EMP grenades
>>
>>390227343
Honestly, every build benefits from Throwing, and a psi character should have high Electronics anyway.
>>
>>390227343
You don't really need the synergy on top of what thought control and metathermics give each other and your massive Will in my opinion. With a minimal investment in throwing and just enough psychokinesis for electro and force field instead you can take care of turrets and bots just fine.

The other two schools are way better for the rest of the enemies in the game. The new school as well I imagine. From a pure 'wizard' standpoint the other two schools are more important and you can diversify into the crafting you have the INT for instead.

you can still get the proper crafting with the 3 schools, and i might have thought that just enough for electrokinesis was enough until arke power plant last floor, i was really glad to have proper psychokinesis there

>put traps in every square of coretech warehouse
>the agents eat half of them
Atleast the agents drop some sweet loot.

To each their own. EMPs, force field for cover and base electrokinesis was enough for me. Frag grenades for damage.

For me it's mostly how lack luster the higher level spells like implosion are.

would I be a retard to not take quick tinkering

Yes.
>>
>>390230901

depends, are you planning on abusing traps ?
>>
>>390231074
somewhat, but I find them less easily abusable when not using ranged weapons. is this perk seriously letting me drop a trap in combat every few turns for not even any AP
>>390231003
I guess I'll need to take it then
>>
>>390231189
Yeah it's kind of broken but makes using traps really fun, so... decent tradeoff.

Literally everything mentioned in this review is what makes Deep Caverns good.

>lots of exploration

>limited supplies to increase difficulty

>new challenging enemies with unique abilities that break the mold and force the player to adapt

>challenging final boss, as it should be since it's a fucking final boss

>solid, optional logical puzzle to weaken said bkss

>tons of new lore to read

>all of this is somehow an "issue"
How the fuck do scrubs like this even reach Deep Caverns?
>>
It is actually possible to end the game with all the factions hostile to you ?
>>
>>390236504
Making SGS hostile breaks the main questline, but you could slaughter them after returning from DC and still take the train to end the game. You also need to be on good terms with at least one of the oligarchs until you find acid hunters.

What you guys think of Nerd Commando's game?
>>
>>390236812
His builds are alright, but you can do a lot better.

I got around halfway (I think?) as a wizard, lost my HDD and didn't start again

What's the most FUN way to play? I've always thought scientist (energy guns, high crafting) might have been pretty cool. Or maybe knives+stealth?
>>
>le funny crossbow man
>throwing net
>shock bolt
>flashbang

this shit really fucks my dick

>>390237641
stealth, traps and throwing are maximum fun skills
>>
>>390237716
If you struggle with nets so much, either take Escape Artist or craft infused siphoner leather tabis.

Shock bolts are pretty nasty if you don't have Thick Skull or Bullhead pills, but with a bit of good positioning you should be able to survive one turn.

Never found flashbangs to be much of a problem since more often than not another enemy will break the effect before it's even your turn. Worst case scenario you lose one turn, can be dealt with.
