You need 4 sets and a pair to have a winning hand OP. (Or at least be 1 tile away from finishing it at the end of the round) You have 2 sets and 3 pairs.

Because you have four doubles and two triples. That's not even remotely close to a legit hand. You either have to go for all doubles by getting rid of wheel 4, 5, a single 6, and the bamboo triple, or you pray you get a lot of wheels and make triples of a lot of those tiles.

if you're new, just aim to form an All Simples hands every single time. don't steal, don't call riichi, just try to from 4 sets of 3 (either straights or triplets) of tiles 2-9 and a pair (of tiles 2-8).
discard all 1s, 9s, dragons and winds.

Keep in mind that you can mix some of these yaku, like Pinfu + Tanyao (only 2-8 in sequences only and no special tiles).

Some of these are hard to make, so don't try too hard if the draws aren't with you.

>>390206838
>Is there a ton of censored shit in 2? Is it stripped down like I heard 3 was when it came to the states?
No, that only happened in 3 and only 3 and they only really removed the Taichi porn mag substory in what could be considered censorship. The rest of the games only lose the licensed songs like the title songs and certain fight songs so they get replaced for generic rock or something else that sounds somewhat generic to fit the scene.

>Also is the combat going to feel super different?
A bit, the general way you fight is the same throughout all games, but styles were only introduced in Kenzan and then weren't in the games until Ishin to Kiwami. You won't have as many Heat Actions, you can't freeflow your hits (I.E. punch forward, punch behind, finisher forward, second finisher behind) without pretty much stopping your movement and breaking the combo (Doesn't get better until around 4), and there's way less minigames to deal with. It's just something you have to deal with if you're going back into the older games, if you're starting from 0 or Kiwami and then jumping to 1 or 2 you're basically doing the equivalent of playing something like one of the latest Ratchet and Clank games and then going back to the original PS2 one that has no strafe or aiming. The newer games are the culmination of years of progress and refinement, removing and adding things to see what works and what people like.

There's a lot more than what I mentioned, I just listed what would be considered censorship. If you want the full list:
http://forums.sega.com/showthread.php?322120-Full-list-of-cut-content

Again though, 3 is the outlier in this, the worst everything else gets is just music swaps due to licensing costs (Main theme music and stuff like that, not karaoke). Some are alright, others are completely forgettable (A lot of 5's boss fights have more impact due to the Japanese songs that we didn't get for example). For the most part it's just less refined gameplay, they're all still good and fun despite how negative that sounds, you just have to understand that the further back you go the less refined it was. Missable substories, missable locker keys, missable heat actions, missable items, substories don't show on the map, minigames have absurd minigame AI that if you've played Kiwami's pool is like that level of difficulty in every single game in 3, minigame completion requirements are pretty terrible, freeflow wasn't properly done until around 4, Kiryu gains and loses Heat Actions or they get thrown onto other characters (Shinada's dragging Climax for example was part of another move in 3 I think it was), Amon was completely missable if you made any incorrect choice in a substory until 3 or 4, etc.

Just keep with it, they're all fun games, even Dead Souls despite how awful the gameplay looks in videos.

Learning to play mahjong, specially once you hit Tokujou, is learning how to be reserved. It's not flashy, it's not stylish, but it gets you good chances to always change your hand.
Call as little as possible, unless you're absolutely certain that offense is the ONLY alternative for this hand. Often, even in desperate situations where you're last, letting someone else deal in or continue their renchan might be better than winning a shitty 2 or 3 han hands.

Don't call riichi unless you're absolutely SURE you need that extra han, and that the others WILL fold and you won't need to defend. Do you know where all the dora are? Have you considered what will happen if you draw the dora after you call riichi? Have you considered that maybe all your winning tiles are taken and or in the dead wall? Only count on tsumo, or use riichi to pressure others to fold and drag the round into a draw. A riichi does not mean a win, but it often means dealing in.

And of course, don't kan like an idiot. Most Kans are open, so you're adding uradora you can't even use. What if someone calls riichi right after you call kan? Even if you fold, the damage is already done. Don't ride on that rinshan, unless you have at least a 3 sided wait with 12 outs left.

Don't go for that Kokushi unless you start out with at least 10 types of honors or terminals. Just reset the round.

Don't wait for the riichi to fold if your hand is shitty to begin with.

I could go on, but the best advice I can give to anyone who's going to play mahjong is to accept that at the end of the day, it's a luck based game. No amount of skills will save you from getting tsumo'd to death. Even if you play perfectly, there are chances you might never hit tenpai in the entire game. Save yourself the frustration. Identify the mistakes, but don't assume that just because you lost you made mistakes, sometimes you just get shit on massively, maybe for multiple games in a row.

When you're losing too much, take a break.

Don't worry too much about it. If you know the yaku, you're pretty much good to start playing on Tenhou. It has a lobby system based on your rank, so you'll start out playing against other beginners, and mistakes will often go unpunished.

Furthermore, because of the way your ranking and rating are calculated, it really doesn't matter how badly you do when you're starting out. But if you need a reference, Tenhou gives you a 10+10 second system. As long as you make your play within 10 seconds, you will get your full time back next round; but if you take more than 10 seconds, you'll start using your reserve time. Best case scenario, if everyone takes their full 20 seconds you'll have your own 20 plus the other guy's 60 seconds (20 seconds for 3 players). Worst case scenario, you'll just have your own 20 seconds plus about 5 to 7 it'll take the other guys to play their tiles. If you run out of time, you'll automatically drop the last tile you drew.

But really, don't worry too much about it.

Man, I don't get how in the world you guys remember all these terms and hands. Riichi, Pon, Kan, Chi I get, but the actual scoring hands? I just go for whatever can make a hand, discarding winds and dragons unless I know I can make use of them in a three or four pairing and what I've going for isn't discarded, but otherwise I call Riichi as soon as possible and refuse to Kan, Chi, or Pon unless I know I have three or more of a special tile just for the extra points. Do you have to learn these things for actual games against other people? Because my method has been fine for three of these games now and beating the hard table on 6's demo.

>>390214809
You learn as you play more. When I started out there were some yaku I didn't know about, but as long as you know the basics (riichi, tanyao, pinfu, yakuhai) you're mostly good to go.

The rest is somewhat intuitive. 3 sets of triplets (sanankou) should be easy to remember. 3 same runs in all suits (sanshoku) is also pretty simple. 7 pairs for chiitoi, all pons for toitoi, single suit + honors for honitsu, pure single suit for chinitsu, and so on and so on. If a hand looks special, it probably falls into some yaku.

A couple of the things on the left seem pretty easy enough to remember but all those special hands are just ridiculous to me at least. The chance to pull one out is so minuscule for me to even fathom remembering them. Most of those hands on the left I've done on my own though but not because I knew them, the general rules of four triplets one pair seems to get you pretty far even if you don't remember any of the hands. Hell, I don't even know scoring outside of Riichi adding some free points and handing you the potential for stuff like Riichi Ippatsu and so on.

I would be willing to argue the opposite actually. Avoiding a lost is something that is less reliant on luck, and takes more skill than winning, beyond the unavoidable tsumos. Imagine someone is one tile away from a high yaku hand, and you know for a fact which tile it is they're waiting on - it's gratifying as shit. Because it's a luck based game, it's impossible to win all the time. However, the nature of mahjong means it's possible for one to not always lose. If a person is losing all the time, then they're just not paying attention. Hard to fault luck at that stage. Then again, I'm not a mahjong expert, nor do I play with them so it's kind of a moot point. Just my two cents.

Come on man, Rikiya left as much of an impact on you as his blonde friend did in the end. The love hotel scene is his best one and then there's the whole trip in Kamurocho where you get his tattoo filled in but I never felt attached to him like Kiryu seemed to be. Not to mention from Kiryu's perspective he knew Kashiwagi for years and years and Rikiya for maybe a couple weeks at best. Even Doc Emoto makes you feel like you care more than Rikiya in my opinion despite him barely being in most games.

>>390219729
No, you have to earn a certain amount of points before it "ranks up". Quit the game you're in every couple winning hands and eventually you get to the one where you can be 500 and then I think it was 1000 on each hand. Same applies to Koi-koi but you can just change it in the settings once you win its thresholds (For Koi-koi it's always like 3500ish and then 8000-10000ish before you can challenge the other tiers). For Chou-han it also increases how much you can bet every time you earn a new option (Usually every 2500ish points) so whenever you get single dice, two die, and then betting against the house you make sure you back out of the game and go back in to raise how much you can be.

So when does 5 get good? I never got around to playing it when it launched in English, so now that I've finished 0 and Kiwami and replaying 2 on the side I finally started 5. Kiryu's chapter was decent enough, but the moment I got stuck as Saejima back in prison yet again I quickly lost the desire to continue. Aside from Akiyama and Kiryu's chapter, I really hated how 4 did the same thing with jumping around characters. I'm glad that shit is gone in 6.

Kiryu and Shinada have the best chapters and I would say the big reveal in part 5 and Kiryu meeting Shinada are the best parts of the finale. Saejima takes hours before you finally have some modicum of control over what you want to do, but then his substories are alright though the only one that stands out is the matchbook girl. If you don't like the investigation in the prison and hunting the first several hours are going to be agony for you. Haruka/Akiyama after that is such a slog though. You will hear that first song Haruka has at least something like 15-20 times just from the jobs alone while the second and third have like one or two jobs at most that they're in (Jobs are optional though, so this doesn't matter if you're just running through the story), and her entire chapter is just recruiting people, doing lessons which are just the song you're going to do at the Princess League in full, and sleeping really. Then you get put into Akiyama's shoes and while he gets Saigo and some fun substories the encounter rate is enormous in Sotenbori, literally every two feet there's an encounter which can get really irritating really quickly.

Saejima and Haruka/Akiyama's chapters are the low points of 5 in my opinion despite Saejima being much more likable compared to 4, Shinada's almost entirely self contained and it's awesome to see him grow as a character, and Kiryu has the entire taxi stuff, some fun substories, and an alright main story portion.

That's because you were supposed to read the Legend of Koizumi instead, it's the superior mahjong manga
>>
>>390198005
Hmm Japanese mahjong doesn't have seem to have the crazy special winning hands that don't follow the rules, like the one where you have 1 and 9 of each numbered suit, and 1 of each of the other stuff.
>>
>>390225247
Yeah I'm not to keen on what to actually go for in terms of scoring. I never completely familiarized myself with the scores of each hands.
>>
>>390225778
The yakumen? It has them. That cheat sheet doesn't include them. It's probably because the guy who made it is aware of why American Mahjong became so shitty.
>>
>>390225778
Kokushi Muso is right there
>>
>>390225945
Oh well I'm dumb, didn't see it, thanks.
>>
>>390225935
It's also missing Tenhou, Chiihou and Renho though it's rare enough to be irrelevant.

I hated the weapon ones because they all did dick all for damage.

Good thing you dont need to do all events to get max rank.

You need to read Ten in order to understand the true craziness of mahjong.

>completion list done except coliseum and gambling
>spent all of last night drinking and playing koi-koi

it's... pretty damn entertaining. Extremely different from all other card games but still has a ton of moving parts.

I made 300,000yen then ragequit when the AI pulled 4 kois on month 12 to combo me into the dust.

ill be back tomorrow

>That moment when it switches from Super Aryans and world leaders to a guy on a battleship.
Is it even worth reading at that point? I read a couple chapters and the guy isn't even remotely as cool as Koizumi.

I honestly haven't kept up with it since then either, the whole world leaders fighting each other in Mahjong was the big appeal. The Bushes are still my favorite part. I'm sure the newer stuff is good too, but I just haven't had much time for reading manga.

Too bad it'll never be animated
>>
>>390228389
At least we got those OVAs out of it all. Super Aryan would have been amazingto see animated though.
>>
besides Akagi, what other mahjong anime is there?
>>
>>390230437
Saki I guess
basically Touhou Mahjong with super /u/ going on

Legend of Koizumi
>>
>>390230515
Speaking of, there's some Saki-related announcement in the next issue of the magazine it runs in. Saki ga Gotoku confirmed

>Some guy in the Tojo HQ courtyard in Yakuza 2 mentions that this is where they used to keep the dogs and there'd be a shitload of Dobermans roaming around, but Third Chairman Sera hated dogs
>No dog enemies in Zero when you bust through Tojo HQ and this very courtyard

Sega fucked up
