The only thing making the Panther "heavy" in any way was the front armor. In every other way it was a medium tank. It's like saying the T-34 was a heavy tank because when it first came out AT weapons couldn't penetrate the armor.

Hitler demanded the armor be increased, but it still kept the medium tank classification.

>>
>>416625982
lol. panther gets its turrent penned frontally by everything that it meets (read: cold war wonder machines) which always kills 3/5 crew disabling the loader leaving you unable to retaliate. on top of that 75mm cannon can't pen 90% of panther opponents meaning you only choice are side shots. flanking however is not easy as panther is still slower than other nation tanks and have terrible reverse.

because weight isn't what classifies a medium from a heavy. Its doctrine and capabilities where the Panther clearly was a medium.
>>
>>416628204
If you are going to correct him don't say incorrect shit either.

Medium tanks were used as infantry support, tank destroyers role was to specifically engage tanks using either ambush tactics and/or flanking maneuvers. These tank roles ended up overlapping making them a bit redundant during ww2.

Heavy tanks were used as both defensive and break-through vehicles.

>>416628705
Tank Destroyers were stop-gaps designed to quickly produce vehicles that could destroy other vehicles (a turreted tank takes more time and resources to make than a turretless tank destroyer). The only ones who made purpose-built tank destroyers intentionally, before any fighting started, were the Americans, and that quickly proved a waste of time which is why they were ditched after WW2.
>>
>>416628301
They are not dumb; they are sea people, not tank people. You cant deny the fact that the concept of making a "land battleship" was a good while the novelty lasted but it was the french that took the concept and said "what if we take this, put a turret on it and use be it like cavalry instead?"
>>
>>416627942
And the Tiger, German heavy tank was 54 tons, so the Panther was medium tank in comparison.

Not to mention the Pershing was 40 tons but count as medium tank too.
>>
>>416628852
The Panther was, except for the extra armor Hitler had slapped on, a medium tank in every design facet, and was used as such (because it was supposed to replace the Pz IV). It was issued to frontline, regular tank divisions.

Heavy tanks, ie the Tiger, were issued to purpose-made independent battalions that were shuffled about the frontline to add extra firepower (since the Tiger had a more powerful gun) where it was most needed.

>>416629021
I thought they just became unnecessary as everyone got crazy good guns

The things were redundant from the moment the Sherman became the standard tank. The M10 and M18 had 76s, which were better than the 75, but once the Sherman was given the 76 they became completely redundant; one has to wonder if instead of building TDs they used those plants to build Shermans, they may have gotten more 76-armed Shermans out faster.

The M36 was rendered redundant just five months after being introduced - again, perhaps they should have used those plants to make Pershings instead.

>Medium tanks were used as infantry support

Fucking wrong, as soon as the "infantry tank" concept smashed itself against the blitzkrieg everybody realized that it was a dumb idea to spread your armor in support of the infantry when the enemy was using theirs independently in large numbers, even the germans did when the panzer 4 proved to be more upgrade friendly to deal with the t-34. Even before the war Guderian realized this and asked for a vehicle that would support the infantry and free up armor that could be better used somewhere else.

You are mistaking combined arms with infantry support, stop confusing combined arms with infantry support.

Pershings were unreliable in Korea because the engine hadn't been upgraded and couldn't handle the inclines.

It didn't matter in Europe.

>>416630272
Given no one else did the Tank Destroyer Doctrine the US Army had, all the information that could have told them it was a waste of time was there. The only reason the Nazis and Soviets made any TDs was because of time constraints; the Americans had the luxury of being able to produce turreted tanks en masse, so that wasn't an issue. They CHOSE to divert resources to purpose-built TDs based on a tactical theory that never played out in practice.
>>
>>416630183
Medium tanks were used as infantry support during WW2, just because a German general thought it was stupid of them to do, does not mean that they didn't do it.

When the medium tanks supporting infantry go up against other infantry with tanks, they ended up dueling each other.

Misconception, while the pzj 1 and Marder series were stop gap measures tank destroyers were a completely different branch which was the anti-tank artillery.

I am not interested in drag and dropping ammo into each individual soldier's inventory so they don't run out of ammo. I think I put up with that for one mission and then dropped the game; the definition of tedium.

88mm was more powerful but the shell was heavier. Panther's 75mm had a much better velocity cannon. Tank shells lose penetration-power the farther they travel, The Panther's gun could penetrate targets at farther distances than the Tiger could. Although the Tiger could penetrate heavier armored targets.

No thanks. Any interesting gameplay this could have is ruined by their need to balance everything to the lions/RP grind so we get MOBA style maps and lame capture the point gameplay with planes to give the illusion of combined arms warfare instead of actual combined arms warfare, not limited by the greed of the fucking devs.

Once you play over 100 matches every battle starts to feel the same, travel down the same lanes, capture the same points, get you 2-4k RP reward while researching a 90,000 RP vehicle, no thanks.

Given that tanks in WW2 were never really 'balanced' match-up in a game sense, since each tank was designed under different circumstances with different priorities, I'm convinced no tank-focused multiplayer game can ever really work without severely restricting what tanks can be used against each other.

What I'd like to see is a ground combat WW2 game that while obviously having infantry combat (because it's basically impossible to create plausible gameplay scenarios in ground combat without infantry) would also model tanks well and could have a single-player tank campaign where the tank balancing obviously matter less since you're the only human. Basically if ArmA had a full WW2 conversion w/ campaigns.
