Had a lovely 15h SH thread last night, so how about part 2?

>rookie guidan'
>lore discussan'
>Jewnami hatin'

Lemme post the
Was going to reply to another Anon just now in another thread that died:

>>423881263
>How much worse is emulation?
A lot.
Not only are the system requirements like 200x higher, you literally get far superior results with PC ports.

>Also does emulating them with a slim PS3 work just fine?
No. Even the Fat (Euro) PS3s have lots of visual glitches with SH2-3.
SH1 is obviously OK.
>>
>>423881605
If I want to play 2 and 3 will it be intense on my computer if I tried to run the PC ports? And do the PC ports support controller?
>>
>>423881605
Why do you have 5 copies of silent hill 2?
>>
>>423882848
SH2fags.
>>
>>423882705
I emulated 2 and 3 on pcsx2 and i didnt have much issue, some framerate drops on cutscenes, and in 3 it dropped the frames on a single boss battle and the fmvs (of which there are three at most) flickered, also some shadows in 3 are kind of fucked up

In conclusion, more than playable in emulator unless you have autism.
I guess the PC ports might be better AFTER tinkering a lot with with them, so if you dont have the patience...
>>
For someone in a shithole country with SH as his #4 favorite series, is having only GH version of SH1 dishonorable? or should i really get a black label

My sh2 is BL and my SOON sh3 will be too, most likely
>>
>>423881605
What are some examples of problems that you'd get emulating them on PS3. Be specific.
>>
>>423882705
I ran 2 and 3 pc ports on my laptop with an 840m and they both ran very well. You should be able to run it too. I think the hardest part about it is just getting it started. After that you should be good.
>>
We can all agree that Shattered Memories is one of the best games in the series, right?
>>
>>423883602
Sure
>>
>>423882705
>If I want to play 2 and 3 will it be intense on my computer if I tried to run the PC ports?
No. Like said, the ports were made for 15+ yo computers, meaning their system requirements are like Pentium 3 + 64mb DX8 graphics card.
My 2012 craptop with i3 @ 2.1ghz, 6GB RAM and Intel HD 3000 ran the ports smooth as butter at the native 1366x768 res.

>And do the PC ports support controller?
yes. But you may face some issues if you want to use MODERN, Xinput pads. There's ways around this though.

>>423883236
Doesn't really matter, does it?
I'd just recommend playing the USA version if you can. Less censored.
>>
>>423884082
Yeah i always get the ntsc versions unless its a europe/japan only release

Mount the ISOs of 2 & 3, and then run their installers like always.
The SH1 is a PS1 rip that you gotta emulate.

Follow the SH2 widescreen fix site's instructions to the teeth, and you should be fine.
For 3 & 4, check the Guide.

If you experience issues saving the game / not being able to edit the disp.ini, make sure the files aren't set to "Read Only", and run the game as Administrator.
If SH2 gets stuck in a black screen upon launch, close it and re-start it again.
If SH3 runs like shit even on a strong PC, check and lower the Rendering Resolution setting.

SH2-4 do not support Xinput & PS4 gamepads natively. Either use Xpadder, a DirectInput pad, or just play with KB+M.
There's OK emu-settings for SH1 in the guide. If the image of the game does NOT fill your entire screen in fullscreen mode, check your plugin AND GPU control panel's image scaling settings!
Try the PGXP emulator for a lot less wobbly PS1 graphics.

>Protips
-Play in the release order
-Never play below Normal difficulty
-Replaying them all is recommended
-Turn down the ingame Brightness setting
-Don't try to kill everything that moves, especially outdoors
-Turning OFF the flashlight can really help
>>
>>423883438
>What are some examples of problems that you'd get emulating them on PS3. Be specific.
-James' legs and one arm keep phasing in&out of existence
-Doughlas' beard has white borders occasionally
-minor lighting issues there and here
...etc. That's at least how it was on my EU PS3 fat, which uses emulation software to run PS2 games, not actual HW. And AFAIK, it's the similar software that you can hack into Slims.

>>423883602
certainly. It's the best SH since Team-Silent's games.
Not exactly "survival horror" any more though.

>>423883039
>I guess the PC ports might be better AFTER tinkering a lot with with them, so if you dont have the patience...
This is such a bizarre statement, as from my experience, you not only need WAY stronger PC, but also need to do WAY MORE tinkering with the emulator to just get the games working. And even then you won't get as good results.
>>
>>423884405
Was it the partial hardware emulation version or full software emulation?
>>
>>423884405
Well i just downloaded pcsx2 and the two isos, mounted them and played them with no problems, besides what i wrote in my post
>>
>>423884682
>Was it the partial hardware emulation version
partial HW, as far as I know. Which really doesn't differ too much from the full software.
Obviously you can give it a shot, but don't expect it to be the optimal choice. There was some other issues too, like MGS3:S running at almost half the speed it did on PS2 in some areas.
>>
>>423884768
you could do the same with the PC ports too, if you're not interested in various enhancements. It's namely SH2 that needs a modern compatibility fix, and even that's just a matter of unpacking one (1) fan-patch in the game's folders... which ironically also adds most of the enhancements while at it.

If sega could be convinced to port Shenmue 1/2 with higher resolutions and give yu suzuki the license to create 3 then there’s literally no reason why sh fans can’t band up and not shut the fuck up until the series has its day again with either a game made by the remnants of the older teams in japan, a proper hd rerelease or a full on 1:1 remake of the original. Seriously, the amount of autism poured out by Shenmue fans for over 15 fucking years puts every fan base to shame considering they actually got something substantial out of it. Never give up and remember that sega was seen as worse as Konami is now years ago
>>
>>423886167

people really had not seen the true horror like nu-Jewnami at that point. At this point, SEGA's practically a savior of ye olde and more obscure vidya.

SH1 is the best game in the series, with perhaps the greatest intro to any horror game ever.

And why emulate, when PC ports exist?
>>
>>423886724
Stop and play 1 first. It’s important to play every game in the series in order. 2 isn’t directly connected like 1-3 are but it’s important to play in order regardless to get a true understanding of why the games are great

Following the release of Resident Evil 6, Capcom conducted internal discussions regarding the direction of the next installment. A preliminary version of the game, developed in 2013, featured a more action-oriented gameplay, similar to that of Resident Evil 6. Taking inspiration from the 1981 film The Evil Dead, the developers to scale back the game to one location and use a first-person perspective to immerse players and return the series to its roots of survival horror.Development began around February 2014.The game is built on a new engine, named RE Engine, which includes virtual reality (VR) development tools. The decision to make the game first-person was made well before VR was considered;VR development started in October 2015, for which a separate team was created. The introduction of VR demanded that textures be more detailed, discarding flat textures and inaccurate object sizes that had previously been used.

SH2 is the most problematic to run on modern hardware, but there's a very detailed instructions on that widescreen fixing site. Installed the game from scratch myself just last night, and it took me less than 5 minutes to get it up and running (I skipped the FMV and audio replacements though).

Running SH2 at real deal 60fps is such an eyes opening experience!

It hurts when I look at pic. Only because now I remember how violently the death of SH became, how they copied the basic plot of 2 to every game after 4.

Also, how could they not have hired Masahiro Ito for the creature design in the games after 3?

Yes. It is a 4:3 game by nature, after all. The fan-fixes just allow it to be ran in widescreen.

they did... for Metal Gear Survive. ;_;
But I know what you're truly asking, and the answer is: because western pricks are too proud to ask for help from foreigners. It's a miracle they even allowed Akira Yamaoka provide 'em music for as long as they did.

not ALL games ran at 60fps, and the very few that did (ie MGS2) did not have stable framerate.

Dogshit, if you're not playin' on original PS2 hardware in original resolution with 4:3 aspect ratio (preferably on CRT) then you're not a fan and probably just stupid fucktard in general. PC ports are lazy abominations with garbage lighting and shadows, ugly noise filter and worst sound, patches won't fix any of this. If you never played SH and still wondering about getting started — don't listen to copypasta shill, even PCSX2 garbage emulator will do a better job than PC port. At this point desperate shill probably injected cryptominers into the patches as well, beware.

The "low resolution textures" are masterfully done and look good no matter what the resolution is.

>how could they not have hired Masahiro Ito for the creature design in the games after 3?

Masahiro Ito was working on SH3 when SH4 was starting the design phase. Now the other ones is because those Western devs were doofus, Masahiro Ito did not just create the design of the creatures but also their entire backstories and purposes and he also created the entire concept behind the otherworld and how it works.

They're the same, but increased resolution will inevitably make them look worse, low-res texture just feels off on smoothed models, plus the game was supposed to be 4:3 in the first place, so any widescreen resolution will make you see shit you weren't supposed to see (abrupt textures, fucked up cutscenes composition etc.). Combine all this with with the worst part which is about butchered lighting, shadows, ugliest noise filter that is completely different from consoles versions and handicapped fog and you'll get the idea. PCfags can't tell the difference probably because they never actually played the original games on PS2.

>PCfags can't tell the difference probably because they never actually played the original games on PS2.
you wish, kiddo. I started and still own the PS2 originals (I'm OP, btw), and the differences were first negligible, now practically nonexistent. In fact, the PC ports are nowadays far SUPERIOR to the PS2 version, thanks to improved performance, resolution, lighting, etc.

>>423898931
>Would I have too much problems if I wanted to play the series on a modern mid-tier laptop connected to my television?
Nope. Like told earlier, even a low-end craptops from a decade ago should run these games just fine nowadays.

Intel HD Graphics 3000 from 2011 got rock solid 60fps on 1366x768 on my Packard Bell.
>>
>>423898931
The PC ports are literally 15 years old games. Their recommended system requirements are like 700mhz Pentium CPU + 64mb DX7 GPU, with 2GB HDD space minimum for full installation with FMVs.
I would not be surprised if even the notorious EEE-PCs from the turn of the decade would run the PC versions smoothly.

She is imagining her being her own father, and the whole game was just about the twist of you finding out that you are actually the daughter.
And then it is the whole "tracking" thing where you play it a certain way you get a certain ending so you get some information about Harry, but it's a re-imagination of the first game. So you can say it does not count.

In Origins it's hinted at that pappy Travis committed suicide. Also how come Alessa is a demon monster when in 1 she tried to prevent the whole thing? She even split her soul so the second coming of the demon could not be born.
The whole game just left a bad taste in my mouth.

she doesn't, why do even you think so?
>about the twist
No, it's not a twist, it's an explanation of the events of the game. Twist is something completely unexpected and unneeded, but what adds more depth to the story. SM literally starts with Kaufmann, so it was clear it won't be like original game. What you did expect Harry just find Cheryl at the end of this game?

>Origins it's hinted at that pappy Travis committed suicide
You mean in cutscene where game shows you how he hanged himself? Or what are you even trying to say by that?

Anyway, yes, story is bad in that game.
>>
So... the PC port of Silent Hill 2's been fixed? It's got the audio from the PS2 version patched in clearly. Have they fixed the fog too? How does it stack up to the original PS2 version now?
>>
>>423901330
it's shit don't bother
>>
>>423900713
When the story starts with Kaufman and then it goes into a gameplay where you are Harry, it is safe to assume that one is Harry and not the daughter. So the ending becomes a plot twist.
It is safe to assume since it's the first time playing the game that you the gamer has amnesia.

When it first happened to me, when I found out I was actually the daughter I was playing instead of the father losing a daughter, which I believed. The impact of the game felt cheap but that is just my opinion.
>>
>>423901548
That's very specific. I know the PC port even with patches wasn't anywhere near as good as the PS2 version when I played it a few years ago, but has it been fixed fully yet? How well does it stack up now? I just kinda want to replay it soon and don't feel like finding a CRT.
>>
>>423901606
Kaufmann never calls you Harry, if feels like obvious thing that he doesn't talk to Harry, but somebody else. If you thought you played as Harry, who had an amnesia and Kaufmann is helping him to recover, why would cutscene with Harry as patient started to recover his memories even before talking with Kaufmann?? It doesn't work.

AND ANYWAY, in the end, we both know Cheryl didn't have an amnesia, so even if you believed so at first playthrough, it doesn't make sense for you to say "MC in SM had an amnesia, just like James"
>>

>>

>>
>>423903141
SH2 and 3 use exactly the same controls. No idea what you are saying here.

>I also remember the fog looking really thin too in comparison to the PS2 version. Has that been fixed?
You could try familiarizing yourself with the given info, you know? That same shit's been asked like 4 times ITT alone.

Yes, we've had a fog fixer since 2015.
You can make the fog even THICKER than on PS2, if you want. See >>423885037

Visual glitches are practically all eliminated.
you can even remove the framerate cap and run it at 60fps or higher.

>>423903250
Sh4 plays a bit shitty no matter what you do, since it uses the 2D controls instead of 3D "tank controls". Just try to replicate the PS2's controls as well as you can; look up some manual scans.

Guys I just started playing SH1 yesterday and I'm so sorry. I was holding off from the game because I was intimidated by the PS1 jank and setting up the emulator but I finally pulled the trigger and it's worth it, damn was it worth it. attaboy!
seldom do people exaggerate when they praise the cream of the late 90s gems. SH1 is still one of my all time favorite games ever, and I've successfully "converted" tons of newbies into SH / horror fans with it in recent years alone.

Hope you're not planning to throw the game away too soon, since there's fuckton of replay value in SH games!
>>
>>423894749
Doesn't 60fps in SH2 cause audio bugs tho?
>>
>>423903990
I've not experienced any so far. Though I've only played a few mins of the beginning with 60fps so far
>>
>>423903445
Even if I cant say SH1 is my ultimate favourite, I still feel like it IS the best game in the series.

If you think about it, the genre of the series is psychological HORROR, and the first game is still the best at that. Its been mentioned in the previous thread and ITT thread already, but the intro with the alley still hasnt been topped for a lot of people, and thats just the beginning.
Ive played it countless time by myself and with my friends, but some moments are still as effective as they were back then.
Like the first time the night comes, finally getting to the school seeking shelter from the madness outside (just to find out youre even more fucked in there), the fucking hospital etc

The game is a masterpiece, and the history of its making and how team silent pulled off such an amazing performance is legendary.
I love all of the first 4 games, but as I said, the first one is the best, even though I couldnt name my favourite

Is SH2 on PS2 acceptable?
>>
>>423904629
Yeah, thats true
That may be one of the reasons a lot more people prefer the second game, its much more personal and a bit easier to handle it

SH1 is pure terror, graphics dont matter, if you make someone new to the series play it at night in a dark room, alone, with a good sound system or headphones, theyre gonna shit themselves, I can guarantee you that

SH2 has the most iconic stuff from the series though, has a nice twist at the end, good characters, top tier music and atmosphere, its easy to fall in love with
>>
>>423905837
>nice twist
How is it a twist? Did people expect what James will just find actual Mary, talk to her and that's it?
>>
>>423906218
The game has a nice way of presenting it, maybe that would be a better way to say it
But still, I dont think most people thought James actually killed Mary while playing it for the first time, even if her being dead wasnt really a question through the game
>>
>>423906991
well, they did expect some resolution to that story related to relationship between James and Mary.
