I think GOG has patches for it already, and the rest are in their forums

Magic is OP
If you want to go technology, don't start with techno skills, start with the basic melee or ranged skills first and then dump into the tech skills once the world opens up

Also don't ever pick a gnome character
and kill all gnomes you meet
trust me on this
>>
HighRes patch with ScrollDist = 0 is a must. Otherwise moving the camera around is stuttery and fucked.

Is it only me the game seems to slow to crawl after 10 min

yeah, i already know what the ((((gnomes))))) are up to.

Read the manual. Because the manual is amazing.

My other advice is to not listen other players before playing. Especially not meta gaming tips like >>434815910. Just play the game, do what feels natural, and enjoy what I think is the greatest RPG ever made. Play the character you want to play, the more ridiculous the better, don't worry about if it's viable or not.

>>434816284
No
>>
>>434817260
thank you!
i think unfortunately i spoiled the best side quest to myself alreadyt, there was a thread yesterday. but it encouraged me to finally acquire the game and try it, while i still wait for a viable pathfinder version, so probably next month
>>
If you're going mage, pick harm. It's the only spell you'll ever use in combat.
>>
>>434816068
Doing god's work, Anon.
>>
My best advice? On your first playthrough just go with your gut reaction but maybe try and roleplay a specific 'alignment'. Arcanum is probably one of the best RPGs created for the sheer OPTIONS you have in completing most quests. Pretty much every quest except the very small ones have multiple ways to go about finishing them.

If you find yourself really disliking the combat please stick with it and try and see past it. The wealth of roleplaying you can find behind that sometimes frustrating wall is worth every second
>>
>>434817918
Not him, but everytime I've tried Arcanum I get super frustrated 30 minutes into the game. I look at all the choices in character creation, feel super excited to play, and then the combat starts and it's fucking painful to watch.
>>
Set combat to Real Time
>>
>>434818659
I just posted this when I meant the exact opposite.

Set combat to Turn Based.

fuck me
>>
>>434815563
If you want to play mage, do no't pick Metamagic, the game does not have enough dangerous mages as enemies and if you actually meet them, they will cast one spell tops and then proceed to punch you.
Molotovs are OP for techs.
>>
>>434818726
redpill me on differences between RT and TB in this game?
>>
>>434818892
RT is ok when fighting against trash mobs or THOSE enemies in mines.
You will be fucked by it against non scrub enemies when playing a glass character though.

>orcs were literally hired by a gnome in contact of Ancient Evil
I guess questioning ability of orcs to construct planes must be bigoted tho
>>
When you get to Ashbury, quickly find a gnome beating the shit out of a dog (if you're too late you have to resurrect the dog). Rescue the dog and let him join you as a companion. The dog's name is Worthless Mutt but contrary to its name it actually is one of the strongest fighters in the game. I am not exaggerating when I say it can tank a bomb to the face and hit harder than a furious Titan. It also has no alignment so you could be good or evil, it won't care and will happily follow you to the end (literally).
Minor downfalls to consider:
>no inventory, so you can't let him carry some shit
>can't board the train (this shouldn't be a problem if you're playing a mage though)
>>
Belle is the best waifu.
>>
So anyone ever played as a total ugmo with low int?
>>
>>434815563
Guns suck and the first damage spell you get is OP as fuck.
>>
>>434820885
Yes, that was the only time I actually finished
It's pretty amazing
>>
>>434821026
Tell me about it.
>>
>>434820943
Isn't there a patch that fixes guns?
IIRC the problem wasn't that they dealt low damage, but rather that their damage per shot intervals were ridiculously large, something like 5 - 20.
>>
Is playing a character fighting with fist viable in this game?
>>
>>434817260
Unless you are very familiar with how the game works it's actually solid advice to have a decent sense of what is on a higher tier. Few things are worse in crpgs than struggling with a new one and feeling yourself being gimped at every encounter due to how things are balanced for certain builds. All the extra fun and challenging builds are way more enjoyable the second time around.

Few new players enjoy Fallout 1-2 if they choose low amounts of agility and only get 1 action per turn and hardly any movement. It's interesting once you know where being a charisma oriented character can do his thing rather than realizing it's not a skillcheck in that particular place so now you are fucked by combat.
>>
Charisma is great.

My first run was as a charismatic, high beauty mage with summon spells and time buffs that used a smoking and top hat.

I never had to touch an enemy. My 8 thugs did all the work. And I was rich as fuck. Bought all the good stuff for my party
>>
Is a full stealth character viable?
I want to sneak around and avoid combat and steal shit.

This is your daily reminder that there will never, EVER be a sequel or spiritual successor to Arcanum, VTM:B or Jade Empire.
>>
>>434822449
Stranger things have happened. Even System Shock 3 is getting made. A spiritual successor or even a sequel to Arcanum is not as unlikely as it once was thanks to crowd funding.
>>
>>434822630
Who even owns the rights to arcanum now?
>>
You'll love it. Have fun!
>>
>>434822713
Actiblizzard, I think?
>>
>>434822449
When was the last time a good sequel came out for games older than 10 years and still appeals to those who played the old ones on release?

Other than Doom I guess.
>>
>>434822830
What about XCOM?
>>
>>434823038
It seems fine but I wasn't one of those who played the originals so it's hard to say.
>>
>>434815563
You can't romance Raven as female, it's all bullshit if someone says otherwise. I had to modify script itself to make it possible.
>>
>>434822830
isnt pathfinder spiritual successor to likes of nwn2 and baldurs gate? and it seems decent, mind the bugs and balance issues here and there that devs pledge to correct
>>
>>434823225
Spiritual successors are a different story, there are plenty of successes there. Actual sequels and reboots though, not so much.
>>
>>434822830
Well, Elex isn't a sequel, but it's the best game they made since Gothic 2.
>>
Play it on easy, the combat is broken, patches or not.
>>
>>434823225
Pathfinder is great, but I don't think it's a successor to any specific game. It must have received no bugtesting though, judging by how it's been over 2 weeks since the game has been released and it's still buggy as shit.

You can't even complete it yet.
>>
>>434822180
Bump for this. Thinking of trying the game out.
>>
>love Arcanum

>>
I wish tech characters had a way to teleport like mages
>>
>>434824245
D&D rules are rotten for video games
>>
>>434822630
You're missing one important point. To be a spiritual successor a game has to not just follow the footsteps of the original - it has to be at least as good, ideally better, and I'm sure you'll agree that's impossible, not even with crowd funding, or especially not with crowdfunding. All those so-called spiritual successors to various games are as much successors as they are impostors, there to quickly grab some cash and disappoint lots of fans in the process. Honestly I'd rather it remained dead.
>>
>>434823836
its successor to dnd rpgs i believe. it is the closest thing we have received in 10 years to the last respectable dnd game which was motb (or storm of the zehir if you wish). i am no expert fo tabletop, but as far as i am ware these systems, pathfinder and 3.5, are very fmailiar.

i havent played much pathfinder, because as someone pointed out, its been mess since release. i have only finished tutorial, but ive herad opinions thta this game is very similar to baldurs gate in its structure
>>
>>434824723
Prey 2017 is an absolutely amazing spiritual successor to System Shock. I don't rely subscribe to the whole "old = good, new = bad" thing
>>
Why haven't you taken the black(necromancy)pill yet?

ok, as far as i understand i cant make my own build, oonly use premade templates (i think it sucks)

how does leveling work? what can i adjust? what increases?
>>
>>434829640
You can put your points into anything you want.
You get a few points per level and can spend them on stats or skills.
You can set a premade build but it's not necessary or on by default.
>>
>>434829640
The NPCs are on Templates, but you can put your points anywhere. Use the little up and down arrows near your stats, skills, magicks and techs.

You start with 5 points at character creation and you get 1 per level, 2 at levels that end in 5.
>>
>>434815968
>ScrollDist = 0

in which ini/cfg do I have to put this?
>>
>>434819358

Stealth is awful in this game and it is virtually impossible to avoid combat. Also you do not have control of your companions so they will just aggro to the nearest enemy.

>>
>>434830849
and beauty
>>
>>434830849
Ya it'll be fun but I'm gonna drop a pretty slight and obvious spoiler here combat is unavoidable, so make sure you have a weapon skill or some offensive magick.

But as long as you know that, you shouldn't be caught too off-guard. Persuasion is extremely useful.
>>
>>434831114
thanks for the hint
>>
>>434831114
>>434831160
You can always use your charisma to recruit a lot of people to do your fighting for you, as well.
>>
>>434831018
Beauty isn't worth dumping points into really, it's pretty useless. If you want to be cute, just allocate points elsewhere and cheat to give yourself extra BE (although it barely counts as cheating)
>>
>>434830849
Be warned, you'll need a LOT of points in Beauty (to improve NPC reaction) because half-orcs are the niggers of Arcanum and nobody likes them
>>
>>434831282
Yep. Base reaction for Half-Orcs is -10, and since you have a natural penalty to BE and CH, you'll never be able to raise them to 20.

But you can try your best.
>>
>>434831282
i see.

>>434831265

>>
>>434830724
Shit.

>>
>>434831993
Ya charisma is the second best stat in the game. It allows you to recruit more party members. Just take note of the thresholds.
>>
>>434828024
That's exactly what I do, sans the cheating. You can even lez it up with M'in Gorad once. Can't romance Raven though, even with 20 beauty.
