I've been playing through Undying, it's a good game overall but the combat became a bit of a slog towards the end, still glad i played it though

Silent hill 2. There's no jumpscares and relies more on atmosphere.
And this might just be me, but i think horror games are less scary when played in third person perspective

>“Thank you for remembering Routine,” said the developers in a statement. “It honestly means a lot to us considering we have been very quiet for a long time now. We are indeed still working on Routine but things have been a bit rough on the personal side, the team is good and well though and we are going very strong!”

I still love horror games games though.

You may want to read it first if you like scaring yourself (google "korean comic" it's literally the first result) but I'll spoil it here anyway.

It's a mini web comic about a school girl walking home at night. She hears something and it tl:dr turns out to be a ghost. The gimmick is that not only is there sound to the comic but the ghost is basically a screamer and hijacks your scroll bar so you can't scroll down when the scream happens

I thought it was worse in the beginning of Undying before you get the scythe and haste spell.

Not sure if you're the same person in these threads but check out American McGee's Alice after if you haven't played it yet. It's similar to Undying in some ways but overall better IMO.
>>
>>434843528
DBD is fun and the Hallowed Blight starts on the 19th. It's not scary, but can be intense like a slasher movie.

Call of Cthulhu comes out in just a few days I think.

But the best horror is RE7 and the Outlast games.

As for the chart. I'm a 2.5 I'm not usually scared but occasionally something can spook me like the opening of RE7.

>>434843528
Most of the time I'm at 1-2. There's a few rare exceptions that make me get to 4-5. I think it takes some really odd games to get me there.

ANATOMY is one of the few that actually made me terified and paranoid enough to just walk against a wall to force myself to "avoid" any spooky shit. That shit was so tense, I was just mentally begging for the scary shit to happen so I could stop being so paranoid.

Scratches at the furnace part where you have to crawl inside it also made me nearly shit myself. I fucking love the Silent Hill series but they never really scared me, it really goes for almost every mainstream game since you know what you're gonna expect out of it and after playing a shit ton of games you know what kind of design choices they will use and what kind of tricks they're going to use against you. That's why a game like Anatomy almost makes me shit myself because you got absolutely no idea what's going to happen.

I would gladly take any recommendations for games that are spooky as fuck and obscure. I've played almost all the big franchises and well known titles and a couple of mods for games like Half-life 1 and Amnesia. They didn't do shit for me but atleast the atmosphere is great in them.
>>
>>434845089
Either utilize virtual reality or do more cool/stylish horror that doesn't take itself 100% seriously
>>
>>434856213
It's just wishful thinking anon, I really hope that they DO finally bring FS2 to the west. I''ll concede that Blood Curse had some strong faults such as the voice acting and how you become a brick shithouse the second you get a weapon but otherwise it was a 100% improvement for the series imo, if they balanced the weapon aspect it would be perfect horror.

I can list of the times I've been genuinely frightened in a game on one hand. Games have a directional problem when combining with horror, on a very core and basic level. Games as a market medium made to make money need to be entertaining to play, and while in a movie being scared is the entertainment, actually doing the things a scared person does is actually kind of tedious and annoying.

Things like, never actually fighting the monster because you can't win are difficult game mechanics to portray. Do you use cinematic set pieces where you're chased or where you need to hide? The bear scenes in condemned are great examples of that, and they come off kind of silly. Once the cinematic piece is over, you are perfectly safe till the next one, you start to see the set pieces coming and expecting them, and god forbid you can actually die in them, theres nothing more frustrating and less scary then having to repeat a chase three or four times because of bad signaling on where you should be going.

What's the other option? make a game where you just have a monster somewhere in the world and maybe it'll find you maybe it won't? Maybe you'll go through the entire game and never see the monster or maybe you'll be ass raped by rng and the monster will just block a main door forever? Theres no solution to this, the problem lies in the very simple fact that games need to be completed, and failure states are an "intended roadblock that you are meant to overcome." How can you be afraid in games when you know that?

I don't get when this gameplay about hiding in closets and running away constantly became so damn popular. Cry of Fear scared me way more than any of these run from monster/killer kind of games. do finish the game. The last section house was horrific at times
>walking about in a completely dark room on second floor
>look at the window
>some dark figure at the distance running towards the house
I was never able to repeat the moment, but man did it crawl inside the back of my head.

P.S.
I myself was more of a 4-4,5 guy (i.e. never pausing the game even after the jumpscare, but did lose my grip under pressure anc would occasionally fuck up my moves)

No it's all down to somewhere between 0-1 (the very last time the game actually took me by the balls was 1-2 years ago, in Subnautica early build.. It was a one-time scare, but man it was fucking intense)

You can crush a few brewskys and go on a paranormal hunt with Zak.
Just be careful, you might get locked up.

i dunno, people keep shitting over the second one, but I really enjoyed the campiness of it and it has far more memorable (for me) locations that I can easily think of off the top of my head.

Its more action oriented. I actually meant to include it with 5 under action/horror. Its the weakest of the original trilogy by far and only Jill waifu fags place it above anything but 6 in the core series.

didn't care much about the story - it jumped the shark the moment the word "cult" has been spoken out loud at the end of the first game (also the final sequence in front of a mirror). I was expecting for things to go batshit bonkers / conspiracy at the top of the level mad writing (there was literally no coming back for a sequel with such a hook)

As for the weapons, I don't think they did anything bad with it - they did add a shiteload of variety like more control over your fists swinging + environmental kills were fun.
Do you mean firearms?

2 is much better in that regard. Secondary missions are more clearly marked and don't need a mission complete to register.
Also, Toyama will continue the series, he HAS to keep the faces. 2 really nailed that technique.

>>
>>434863489
You’re really defensive about this huh? Makes you wonder...
>>
>>434863334
good in theory, shit in practice, way better for a novel or even a movie than a vidya game
it's way more effective when you can actually describe the character's inner thoughts and mental condition, hence a novel.
>>
>>434863334
Seeing as how I feel that The Cat Lady is the single greatest depressioncore ever made, I'm a big fan of that genre as it's often just as unsettling.
>>
>>434863065
The worst thing in Siren is that by the end of the game, most of the enemies you'll face are the protags that died along the way. Shibito/Yamibito have that feeling that they are "almost" human, but lacking in some key way, which makes them extremely unsettling. The house mission in 1 and BC is the prime example of that.
>>
>>434863602
The house was one of those parts in a game where visual storytelling was absolutely key, in their minds everything is absolutely amazing and they just do their known routine over and over, the second it's disrupted is what leads to blood lust. FS/FS2/BC need to be on more people's radars.
>>

>>434863904
It's because in a movie, your just along for the ride, everything is predictable.

It gets turned on its head when YOUR the one that has to make the actions and deal with the hauntings

I'm lucky enough to have found a hard copy for the original Xbox a couple years ago in my local mom & pop game store.

So I couldn't tell you how to do a PC version.

But if you really like it you can. Get it and original Xbox fairly cheap. And the Xbox isn't a waste it's got an underated. Games like Halo 2, Jade Empire, and Black.

Alternatively there is probably an Xbox emulator out there if you are willing to pirate shit.

Subnautica. Here's the scenario. You've crashed landed alone in the sea on an alien planet and you need to scavenge to survive. If you have even the tiniest amount of fear of the dark, hydrophobia, and giant alien underwater creatures it will get to you. I hardly play horror games and I got blindsided by how well it tries to tap into your innate fears of drowning and spooking underwater noises in the dark areas.
