I'm really curious how much they'll charge for the new Steam Machine. If it's $300-$400, I think that would be an incredible value and, at that price, it'll be a no-brainer to buy a Steam Machine. However, if it's any more expensive than that you're better off just building your own PC or upgrading a used PC. The Steam Machine is going to have very limited-to-no upgrade paths. You can't assume that the Steam Machine is going to sell well because the Deck has done well. The Deck being a handheld makes it a fun novelty, whereas you don't necessarily need a new PC.I really have my doubts they'll sell it cheap. It's probably going to be $600-$800 and I think it's going to be a FLOP at that price. Selling it cheap isn't necessarily a good idea either because what if people decide to buy it because it's so cheap and then just install Windows 11 on it and ignore buying Steam games? You could say the same thing about the Deck but, again, Deck is a handheld and there's basically no reason to do stuff in "desktop mode."

>>725664019It'll be interesting to see how well it sells this time. I'll be amazed if Steam Machine goes well this time. I really do think it should be cheaper than a Steam Deck. The intelligent thing to do would be to take the guts of a Steam Deck and put it in a box. With no screen, no controller, and no battery, you end up with something cheaper than a Deck.
>>725664375i think it will probably perform noticeably better than the last time. first because streamers made pc gaming more mainstream, and second because proton means you can actually just play games on it. it is still just a branded pre-built so i doubt it will be a massive hit, but it's not going to completely flop

>>725664375Their target should be 8-18 year old kids who want to buy a gaming PC but cant afford them. This used to be the target age of consoles before they became completely unappealing. It has to be cheap to hit an unserved market, everyone rich enough to buy a full spec PC doesnt need one or has been playing PC games long enough they could probably build an SFF pc out of spare parts if they were that desperate for a living room PC. My 8-10 year old SFF PC has the same specs as this and is barely double the size.
>>725652091The VR headset is the only device that really interests me, but it will also be insanely expensive judging by the Index and I don't think Valve is interested in taking a cut to try and achieve mass market appeal like Meta. When did Valve start using this gay reddit language and design in their marketing? The announcement video was also cringe and gay.

>>725673442>reddit invented the word "y'all"
This but more square and not made by Microsoft just as Microsoft is shitting up their own game. King shit, Valve.

I'm the steam deck's biggest fan, in fact it's my primary gaming device these days (I moved and never bothered to get a real PC), BUT, doesn't this thing not run AAA games? The lack of anticheat on the big games really feels like it limits the market. I can play Arc Raiders, but if people want to play battlefield they can't on the GabeCube without installing windows which makes it hardly plug and play.I might just be dumb though, can someone explain the logic? I suppose if this is $400 or less I'll buy it but otherwise don't see the point.
valve is gonna fuck this up in the stupidest way nothing will be upgradable not even the internal storage
>>725674301surely not all AAA is kernel level anti-cheat. steam deck works fine with denuvo
>>725674569I don't really play AAA games (Arc Raiders is the first I've played in years), but I've been told most don't work at all if they are multiplayer, like Fortnite, Apex, Valorant, League, Roblox, which I hear is most of the PC gaming market.
>>725674549What, like you think the components are gonna be soldered into the board or something? I find that unlikely.
>>725674301If you strip a windows install down and then install Steam and set it to launch in Big Picture on boot its essentially the same exact UI as the Steam Deck rn. But the anticheat issue is literally just anticheat companies refusing to make their shit worn on linux. Its not impossible to do, Valve's anticheat is on it and it works well enough that it keeps TF2 and CS clean.
>>725674829I know that's the issue, I'm talking more in terms of appeal, it's kind of a chicken and egg thing I guess, but I think steam will really have to underprice these to sell. If they can hit $300 for the gabecube I think it could take off, but any more than that will be a struggle.
>>725674819yes thats exactly what i think and they will have some lame excuse as to why as well just incase someone whines
>>725674710AAA online multiplayer, i guess, is probably all unplayable on linux
>>725675041Until that is fixed I can't see it taking off, steam needs to lean on the other devs.
>>725674549If they made the steamdeck, a handheld device, upgradable, you really think they wouldnt make a whole pc sized pc have an m.2 slot? It also has an SD card slot.
>is called the steam machine>doesn't play any daft punk music or release any steam

>>725675205You know you can change the ssd in a steam deck right?
>>725652091honestly can see people buying this and putting it in their living rooms. Basically a game console with the added benefit of being a computer which is pretty big for normies.
>>725674301tbqh anticheat support is all over the place. some companies support linux, some dont, some started doing it for a while and then stopped but also dual booting was supposed to be a steam deck feature at one point, idk what happened with that
>>725675109wait, i was just scanning through the top sellers chart and Dead by Daylight is verified Steam Deck compatible, but also has kernel level anti-cheat?

>>725675615OG steam machines were an entirely different beast. And I think most importantly the popularity of the steam decks have pushed Valve to be a recognizable name in gaming hardware which will certainly give it a boost with its most important market, dumbass normies who don't want to build a PC
>>725675832there's a pretty obvious path, then. like, if i'm valve, i just walk up to activision and say "hey, if you enable linux support, we'll knock half a percent off the commission we take on this game", activision counters with some other number, and then both parties crunch the numbers until it makes sense
>>725675678For all they're concerned, its a console that just opens, you install the game and you play the game. They dont care what it runs on or what else you can do with it. It wouldnt be any different than any other console for them

>>725676516I got a quest 3 for 400 canadian, if this is more than that it'll never penetrate anything but the sweatlord porn addict market.

>>725676839is there any reasonable way to do this? i'd love if i could remote install games to my deck when they release while i'm at work. right now i just end up installing them to my pc, so my deck can pull the files from it when i get home, which is better than nothing but damn
>>725676841Yeah theres like 50 thousand of them
>>725677286put your deck on a Dock and don't let it go to sleep?
>>725677217Ok, but if all I'm using it as is a remote control screen for my PC, that's their direct competition. They need to be the same price minimum.
I'll probably get the controller. No interest in the box. Slightly interested in the VR headset but I know it's going to be lol priced.
>>725675942>>725652091
>>725677358>same price minimumno retard keep your advertising box glued to your face, just ignore the obvious hardware advantages on the Steam Frame and keep shitposting on 4chan instead of thinking critically about anything ever

>>725677354the dock just has never seemed worth buying to me. i don't really play on my tv, and you can't use an eGPU to actually improve performance, so outside of this it would basically just be an expensive charger
Half Life 3 will launch the same day as the box and the VR headset. Will probably come free with either one.

>>725675109it is not fixed in the sense that those games actively avoid linux because this would make it even easier for cheater.
>>725678028
>>725678224if your entire interaction with your Quest 3 is>boot up>go to app menu>open Steam Link>live in Steamthen you're not seeing many advertisements. You're just getting tracked by Meta so that they can try to serve you third-party cookie/identifier ads whenever you're browsing the web on your other devices that they can identify as you. That is NOT what most Quest 3 users do and they're constantly getting advertised via the Meta Horizon app and within all of the Meta Quest menus/system interfaces

>>725652091It's so weird to me that they keep screwing with hardware. Surely making some new Valve games would be more profitable. I'm not a Halflife person, but I'd love Portal 3.
>>725663407>Selling it cheap isn't necessarily a good idea either because what if people decide to buy it because it's so cheap and then just install Windows 11 on it and ignore buying Steam games?I think you got this line of thinking wrong, almost nobody in the world who is going to buy a Steam Machine is going to go out of their way to never buy a game off of, like it or not, the current biggest PC game market. It's just not going to happen. And because of that, they are going to sell it cheap. Valve probably saw the writing on the wall with Microsoft and Gamepass and know that they're going to try to get into the PC gaming industry more directly. Valve has always obviously hated having to directly rely on Windows for Steam to be as big a success as it currently is. All this Steam Hardware stuff is just trying to beat Microsoft to the punch, and I can see them selling it cheap and at a loss if it means getting a new audience into the Steam ecosystem. Same thing with the Frame, they want to be divorced from Meta so they don't have to worry about getting cut off from PCVR. This is also the reason why they made sure Frame can play flatscreen games, now some guy who brought a Frame instead of a Quest to try out VR is going to have access to a full Steam library like he had a gaming PC this entire time
Can we upgrade this thing?
>>725655793the problem with VR is there are no gamesno one wants to invest in a VR headset because no games and no one wants to make VR games because no one has a VR headset
