What's the ideal gaming device for me? I hate Steam, I hate Valve, I hate Half-Life, I hate the Steam Deck, I hate Gabe Newell, and I hate PC gaming in general.

I dread the day they announce that damn Half-Life 3.

So I'd like a gaming device that's anti-PC gaming and gives me the image of someone who hates Steam and hates Gabe Newell.

Pick one that has the power to play the consoles you want to play, make sure the reviews are good, then have at it.

The only reason to buy a console game is to play exclusive games, when there are very few of nowadays. Most new AAAs are crap enough that people with low or mid-end PCs can already enjoy their favourite prev-gen games without upgrading and those with high-end PCs don't care about cuck systems. Like, you can get a Steamdeck or a Switch if you want handheld, or a PS5 if you want to watch netflix on a big screen.

Unironically excited for the controller. The OG controller was great, but needing a dongle and AA batteries sucks nowadays. I love the trackpads and feel of the Steam Deck and a controller with the same form/function is exactly what I've been looking for to replace my DualShock.

The Cube is a maybe, I tend to dock my SD and use it from the couch, but having a dedicated box for streaming from my PC plus the controller is certainly enticing.

Don't care for the VR thing tho.

I'm really curious how much they'll charge for the new Steam Machine.

If it's $300-$400, I think that would be an incredible value and, at that price, it'll be a no-brainer to buy a Steam Machine. However, if it's any more expensive than that you're better off just building your own PC or upgrading a used PC. The Steam Machine is going to have very limited-to-no upgrade paths. You can't assume that the Steam Machine is going to sell well because the Deck has done well. The Deck being a handheld makes it a fun novelty, whereas you don't necessarily need a new PC.

I really have my doubts they'll sell it cheap. It's probably going to be $600-$800 and I think it's going to be a FLOP at that price. Selling it cheap isn't necessarily a good idea either because what if people decide to buy it because it's so cheap and then just install Windows 11 on it and ignore buying Steam games? You could say the same thing about the Deck but, again, Deck is a handheld and there's basically no reason to do stuff in "desktop mode."

It'll be interesting to see how well it sells this time. I'll be amazed if Steam Machine goes well this time. I really do think it should be cheaper than a Steam Deck. The intelligent thing to do would be to take the guts of a Steam Deck and put it in a box. With no screen, no controller, and no battery, you end up with something cheaper than a Deck.
>>
>>725664375
i think it will probably perform noticeably better than the last time. first because streamers made pc gaming more mainstream, and second because proton means you can actually just play games on it. it is still just a branded pre-built so i doubt it will be a massive hit, but it's not going to completely flop

Their target should be 8-18 year old kids who want to buy a gaming PC but cant afford them. This used to be the target age of consoles before they became completely unappealing. It has to be cheap to hit an unserved market, everyone rich enough to buy a full spec PC doesnt need one or has been playing PC games long enough they could probably build an SFF pc out of spare parts if they were that desperate for a living room PC. My 8-10 year old SFF PC has the same specs as this and is barely double the size.
>>
>>725652091
The VR headset is the only device that really interests me, but it will also be insanely expensive judging by the Index and I don't think Valve is interested in taking a cut to try and achieve mass market appeal like Meta.

It's for console players who are ready to ditch their nogamez machines but not ready to build a PC.
>>
>Cyberpunk 2077 benchmark averaged 65fps at medium settings with basic ray tracing turned on, while being upscaled to 4K from a native 1080p output using AMD’s FSR 3.0. The benchmark never dipped below 58 frames per second, and when I took the controls for a spin in one of the more demanding regions of the game, the lowest I saw was 55fps in a quick firefight.

FSR3 is literally unusable. Cyberpunk supports FSR4. That means the GPU can't run 4? Valve using garbage bin chips.

I think you can run fsr 4 on rdna3 on linux, although it's not as efficient as it is on rdna4.
>>
>>725667108
Relying that heavily on FSR without support for FSR 4 seems insane. This console is going to struggle immediately, there's a target audience for people who dont have a console or a pc but that is pretty small. This almost feels like the specs I would expect from a prototype deck 2.0, modern games at 1080p while just falling short of 60fps.

The controller looks so bad to hold and the buttons on the back being actual buttons is retarded, not sure how but MS nailed how a controller should be, the paddles are longer and are comfortable to click regardless if you have large fingers or not because it's a paddle, so you press wherever is more comfortable. They are also metal so they feel good to press, unlike the plastic they will probably use on the Steam controller

I'm the steam deck's biggest fan, in fact it's my primary gaming device these days (I moved and never bothered to get a real PC), BUT, doesn't this thing not run AAA games?

The lack of anticheat on the big games really feels like it limits the market. I can play Arc Raiders, but if people want to play battlefield they can't on the GabeCube without installing windows which makes it hardly plug and play.

I might just be dumb though, can someone explain the logic? I suppose if this is $400 or less I'll buy it but otherwise don't see the point.
>>
valve is gonna fuck this up in the stupidest way
nothing will be upgradable not even the internal storage
>>
>>725674301
surely not all AAA is kernel level anti-cheat. steam deck works fine with denuvo
>>
>>725674569
I don't really play AAA games (Arc Raiders is the first I've played in years), but I've been told most don't work at all if they are multiplayer, like Fortnite, Apex, Valorant, League, Roblox, which I hear is most of the PC gaming market.
>>
>>725674549
What, like you think the components are gonna be soldered into the board or something? I find that unlikely.
>>
>>725674301
If you strip a windows install down and then install Steam and set it to launch in Big Picture on boot its essentially the same exact UI as the Steam Deck rn. But the anticheat issue is literally just anticheat companies refusing to make their shit worn on linux. Its not impossible to do, Valve's anticheat is on it and it works well enough that it keeps TF2 and CS clean.
>>
>>725674829
I know that's the issue, I'm talking more in terms of appeal, it's kind of a chicken and egg thing I guess, but I think steam will really have to underprice these to sell. If they can hit $300 for the gabecube I think it could take off, but any more than that will be a struggle.
>>
>>725674819

unfortunately, this joke worked better back in the days when google answered your question
>>
>>725678834
if you press and hold the power button there might be a "turn off screen" option which you could use after disabling all sleep functions, if that doesn't work there's 2 dozen different ways to shut off the display via the terminal but then I'd have to babysit you through how to use that
my other suggestion would be disabling all sleep, plugging it in, and turning brightness all the way down which should be close enough

i'm just making small talk until i can clock out brother, if you aren't interested in talking about steam deck settings i'm not going to force you to reply

use case for the headset?
>>
>>725679456
seems like they're leaning on the monitor replacement aspect. should work better than a quest for playing games or watching movies before bed, since it won't freak out if you turn off the lights

sorry man I used to do IT help desk and lost all patience for doing it on my own time and since it's 4chan it's always thankless

i'll give that a shot

>PC faggot race: consoles ares shiiiiiiit
>also PC faggot race: our fat king Gaben made a console, let's slurp his cock, all of us together
lel what a bunch of cocksucking hypocrites
>>
>>725680005
our fat king Gaben is going to sell a pre-built PC that runs regular PC operating systems, I know you're not operating on many brain cells here but surely you can understand the difference

it's more like a pc wearing a console skinsuit

I'm all for this console if it means HL3 is a launch title

LMAO

is the nu/v/ consensus that invasive anti-cheat is good because my heckin' competitive integrity and therefore Linux is le bad? This is where we ended up?
>>

>It's going to be extremely niche
I was gonna build a mini itx rig so I might just end up going with this. I would imagine plenty of people getting into PC gaming now or upgrading from older rigs would go for it if the price is decent as well.

We hate linux because it is tranny garbage
>>
>>725681450
using Linus Torvalds as the example of why Linux is pozzed is fucking retarded, this entire speech from him is 100% performative and only aimed at redirecting the hate trannies have for him at someone else. I mean this sincerely. Open Source as a whole is pozzed but mainly because the entire tech industry is pozzed, all of the ugly nerds try to become women nowadays

that post is pure shivers

consoles are shit because of the closed system and proprietary bullshit (you must insert a playstation game into your playstation, and you must use a playstation controller), plus all the extra fees for online multiplayer
this has none of that and in fact encourages the exact opposite

If this thing is sub 500$ it will unironically kill all PC and Console says for the foreseeable future. If valve does this right they will be throat fucking the competition.
>>

As much as id love that it wont kill shit cause ps fanboys are ps fanboys and pc players would rather upgrade parts. What they can do is replace xbox as its currently shitting itself which would be great

Middling. Expect to play everything at medium settings and using FSR if you use a resolution bigger than 1080p unless you consider <= 30fps playable.

It's so weird to me that they keep screwing with hardware. Surely making some new Valve games would be more profitable. I'm not a Halflife person, but I'd love Portal 3.

>Selling it cheap isn't necessarily a good idea either because what if people decide to buy it because it's so cheap and then just install Windows 11 on it and ignore buying Steam games?
I think you got this line of thinking wrong, almost nobody in the world who is going to buy a Steam Machine is going to go out of their way to never buy a game off of, like it or not, the current biggest PC game market. It's just not going to happen.
And because of that, they are going to sell it cheap. Valve probably saw the writing on the wall with Microsoft and Gamepass and know that they're going to try to get into the PC gaming industry more directly. Valve has always obviously hated having to directly rely on Windows for Steam to be as big a success as it currently is. All this Steam Hardware stuff is just trying to beat Microsoft to the punch, and I can see them selling it cheap and at a loss if it means getting a new audience into the Steam ecosystem. Same thing with the Frame, they want to be divorced from Meta so they don't have to worry about getting cut off from PCVR. This is also the reason why they made sure Frame can play flatscreen games, now some guy who brought a Frame instead of a Quest to try out VR is going to have access to a full Steam library like he had a gaming PC this entire time

the problem with VR is there are no games

no one wants to invest in a VR headset because no games and no one wants to make VR games because no one has a VR headset

>>725654329
Because it's a controller made for a computer? Are you retarded? You must be extremely retarded

Western fan-sequels to 35 year old Japanese games that don't look, sound or play as good as the originals.

the casuals will be on the ps4/pis5 anyway
most people will move to the switch 2
pcfags would rather upgrade parts
this is a niche within a niche that will sell less than the steam deck
