Nigga we're at 7th season right now for the last few weeks.
I feel like it might be making them some money, at least more than the cost of keeping up the servers and updates since there's shitton of paid skins and whatnot.
Probably because in the end it's still a "only one in its niche" type game, so retards (like me) keep playing despite the game itself really not being so good.
The sad part is that the game started with zero content and basically the end of year 1 should have been the actual release state. That said, the year 2 roadmap promised a lot of good gameplay additions but unfortunately the season 6 features were delayed and only just now released in 7 and there has been literally nothing mentioned about any other originally promised mechanic - unironically all most likely scrapped unless proven otherwise.

It's why the movie's Animus that Layla made is so retarded because it went back to direct ancestor syncing. Yes. You literally play as a random employee called "Noob" of Abstergo Entertainment syncing Edward (Desmond's ancestor)'s DNA for Abstergo. Noob has zero relation to Desmond and the game even has documents showing how Vidic and this one chick were developing the Animus. Vidic's Animus variant required direct ancestor relation but could consistently sync while the chick's didn't but it was killing people who tried to use people who weren't direct ancestors. She eventually runs out of people willing to die for her project so she personally tests it herself, dies while in the machine, Vidic realizes it worked before she died, and then refined it and slapped it into the Animus during the course of AC3 before he was killed by Desmond.

That then becomes the base of the Animus going forward which Layla works on starting from the movie's variant and then in Origins she creates her own Animus called the "Sarcophagus" by tweaking Vidic's schematics which allowed her to sync any form of DNA without the need for blood at the cost of kidney failure if you used it for prolonged sessions.

I think the deal was in the works because even if Shadows was a success, they had too much debt. The deal is likely in jeopardy since their earnings are so shit that its not worth it to save the sinking ship. I doubt Ubisoft would delay their earnings release if the deal was OK since they mentioned it as a positive in their most recent revenue report. Tencent also knows more than we do so there may be something they found that spooked them or there was a regulatory issue (since it was always conditional on it being approved by regulators)
