Guys, it finally happened. On my third attempt to play through Dark Souls, it finally clicked not long after beating Capra. I don't know what changed, but I get it now. The sewer vendor behind the grate that you probably unlocked in the little waterway leading to undead parish sells an item that gives you a buff so you can damage ghosts. It lasts for a while, and ghosts frequently drop them, so one should be good enough to get you rolling.If you aren't feeling particularly confident, you can skip the area for now. Ghosts can grab you and attack you through walls which can be a little much for inexperienced players.
