Dominions is a fantasy turn-based war game created by two dudes. One of them is a teacher.
The game combines a simple presentation with an extremely wide array of strategic options, including over 3000 units, 900 spells and 400 magic items. Turns are resolved simultaneously, with players planning battles rather than directly controlling them.
It has simplistic graphics but is easily moddable and extremely deep.
Basically, it's an autist’s wet dream of a war game.

Gonna try EA Xibalba for the first time in the next EA PBEM that pops up, one question: How do you expand with them, short of taking an awake expander?
>>
>>217473332
Same hp targeting as offensive spells, just at your own troops.

>how do I get them to buff my frontline soldiers without having to put my expensive mage right up front?
If you enemy is throwing down a lot of evocations/ranged attacks, don't have the valuable troops you want to buff at the front. Put a light screen of chaff on the frontline instead.

Not only does this keep your mages safe while buffing, it keeps your valuable troops safe until buffed.
>>
>>217473543
Hope that you'll spawn somewhere witha lot of forests arround. Attack forests first. Recruit there more bats with all your gold. Swarm rear line of indie defenders every time. Around 120 bats can overwhelm even a heavy cav province, provided luck. Sometimes you have to order them attack rear, but usually it's better to order attack enemy archers.
>>
>>217473543
You know that xibalba is the biggest target for every nation to kill them right behind mictlan right? Also xib's expansion has been gimped super hard since dom5 new combat mechanics. It's super hard to expand with them compared to what they used to achieve. Awake pretender is usually a good cop out.

I well, congratulations Atlantis. I'm pretty surprised honestly that you snuck out this win. Bogarus didn't put on enough pressure and smacked Ashdod instead. I was trying to mostly deal with Agartha and TC, seems taking the UW Throne of Might postponed your victory at least by a turn or two.

If only they featured in game more often aside from cataclysm. I've played this game for a while, even played dom3 back in the day, but I've never seen a doom horror ingame. I've heard of people having their SCs get horror marked a ton by fighting armies with a ton of S1 mages, but that's about it.

Sucks that send horror got nerfed so hard too, I don't think it was even that strong in dom4.
>>
>>217473543
Xibalba expands fine with the big scorpions. You want neutral order or better since they have a reasonable rec point cost. Snowballing expansion isn't nearly as good as it used to be, but you can still take archers / archer tribals. You need a LOT of bats to do so safely, though. Usually 80 is fine, though less can work if you're using the trained/armored kind from your forts.

You want to start recruiting sacreds fairly early, even though they don't help much with expansion, because they're your only protection against enemy rushes. Your ozelotl bless will make them hit fairly hard (assuming you took a good one) which then lets them punish players invading you. You still need to use them in numbers and against smaller groups of enemies, but unlike your regular bats, they can at least function.

Once you've made it to blood 4, you want to turn all of your everything into demons. Ozelotls are amazing on any nation, and you're the best nation at using them thanks to ubiquitous flying priests, demon leadership, and the ability to summon them out of any fort.

While ozzies are the best thing xib has, they're not the only thing you've got. The maws/meld spells cannot friendly fire on flyers, so they're really solid. Same for earthquake, though there are fewer nations that mass squishy human mages and even the ones that do can usually protect them from quake fairly easily.

Xibalba honestly has a huge toolkit, with incredible diversity and deep path access, but when it lost its turbo expansion, it gained an early game vulnerability that was usually covered up by the fact that old EA Xib could just cover the world in bats quickly enough to not be easily rushed. Now, most sacred using nations can kill you early, and even just nations with solid troops like sauro and ulm can cause you issues.

They're definitely not good, but they aren't the worst, and you can expand. You'll 100% need an awake, but you get good awakes to pick from, and your formation fighting heavy infantry with awe expand perfectly fine even unblessed once your awake has secured the resources to produce meaningful numbers.

If it's earlygame you probably don't need to care much. The chance is based on how many candles are present and disease takes a while to kill.

Blitz through their provinces and sit a small force on their capital to prevent them recruiting. Then you can bring in priests to clear out the cancer dom on their capital and siege it properly with a large force.

Two actions. One which is a full blown fairy nation from beginning to end and another that is fairy-cored with a human subpopulation that gradually dies out with each era.
As a whole:
>-All basic fairy units are cheap, immortal, magical flying units without the need to eat with usually magical projectiles (as an example basic green fairy unit of the EA/MA TFoL faction fires three projectiles that do 75% AP fatigue damage), offset by having absmal morale, durability averaging somewhere in between hoburgs and sprites, increased upkeep, and the fact that you can't get rid of any fairy unit after they're recruited: they'll eventually respawn and get back to eating gold, allowing an ill-attentive player to irreversably cripple their economy. LA might remove immortality entierly to reflect the general decline of the fey and magic in the world.
>-Unless specified otherwise, danmaku deals fatigue damage. It is very easy to cover the screen with and hit the majority of an army using danmaku units, but hard to kill or permenantly cripple units using basic danmaku alone. Any fairy unit whose ranged ability doesn't already have unlimited ammuniton can fall back to using a basic danmaku attack. Non-fire danmaku works underwater.
>-Possess spellcard spells in the Enchantment tree which usually further saturate the field with bullets and/or lasers.
>-Both EA versions of the factions can use site Construction rituals in order to upgrade their recuitable unit lineup which include antiquated outside world technology, though the basic fairy faction only utilizes a couple of units compared to the ice fairy-centric version. Particularly notable are the artillery units that are cmd-based siege units capable of bombarding units on the map (similar effect to Fires from Afar) and launch devistating splash attacks in direct combat that can blow nasty holes into enemy formations, but are demanding resource-wise making them hard to stockpile.
>-Friendly with Hoburgs.

*Factions
Three Fairies of Light led nation (Name Pending), EA - Yousei:
>-Consist of various elemental fairies (Yousei), with the exact type recruitable based on terrain, but mostly use light-based magic and sunflowers. Main magic paths are astral/nature which is their default gem gen, but they can recruit from all elemental paths provided they possess proper terrain.
>-The basic (fort) unit lineup is based off of Age of Ethanols, with basic units seperating into blue, red, and green (long range, melee, and mid-range), and special summons include kedama of these colors as well as white and black (summoning), and spellbooks acting as siege units (thaumology.) Possibly allow more obscure Youkai for summoning as sprites allow such as Nurikabe and Kijimuna.
>-Native commanders are decent at commanding magic units but poor at commanding non-magical units.
>-Mages/Commanders (Dai Yousei) are ubiquious, but universally weak, though astral being common allows for communions. Very few sacreds; trying to find something that fairies could base their worship around. Can recruit terrain-based elemental magicians without labs.
>-Heroes include the Three Fairies of Light (naturally) and Lily, Eternity functions as a unique Pretender. Clownpiece is summonable via summon Lampad and is a relatively powerful but fragile Fire/Astral caster sharing several traits with the clowns of Kirkostaculis including sacred status: as fairies, they're all immortal.
>-Other deities are a mix of those avalible to the Jomon line as well as Celtics; uniquely, the fairies can't have the demilich as a pretender: in fact, they can't use any native death pretenders at all.
>-Less construction centric units compared to Misty Lake, but can use a late-game construction ritual to recruit artillery: generally not worth it unless you're swimming in earth gems, but unlike the ML version of the unit in the same era it counts as a fairy unit (ergo, immortal.)

Three Fairies of Light led nation (Name Pending), MA - ??:
>-Largely the same as EA, but loses any unique construction rituals/units as well as the ability to recruit ice fairies.
>-Now officially called "fairies" like Misty Lake.
>-Melee units are now armoured and slightly more capable, though their low morale continues to limit them compared to summons.
>-Some commanders are noticably larger (size larger) and more capable at magic than before, but are more expensive as a result.
>-Identical heroes to EA.
>-Gain the ability to summon Fey Hounds.
>-Have unique providence-based rituals which include scale manipulation.

Three Fairies of Light led nation (Name Pending), LA - ??
>-Major unit shift; fairy units are noticably larger and stronger than in previous eras, but have lost their immortality and gained glamour like the Tuatha.
>-Many Youkai summons from previous eras are lost to history.
>-Major pantheon shift - most Asiac deities are no longer options.
>-Heroes changed - Fairies of Light/Lily White are now greater fairies and more capable as a result, but no longer immortal like all the other fairies.

And now the second faction:
EA Misty Lake - The Outside World
>-Basic lore consists of humans from the outside world rescued by Cirno and organizing into a regional power, adding the merpeople of the Misty Lake itself into their ranks later on.
>-Diverse units including fairies, human infantry, machines, and aquatic merpeople.
>-Magic centered on water and nature, which is the native gem generation. Earth is a demanding but potentially powerful line detailed below.
>-Human units start heavily armoured for EA, with incredible morale (basic infantry is 13) and 20% disease resistance, but subpar strength (9, 8 for milita), combat skill, and high encumberance.
>-With enough experience, human units can become stronger, meeting Ermor's infantry stats while maintaining their above-average morale and gaining afliction resistance.
>-Human militia will promote to standard infantry which itself can promote again.
>-Mages are all fairy or merperson, possess similar qualities to those of the base fairy faction.
>-Spells are largely centered in the enchantment tree, including the ability to summon cheap snowman chaff that notably has no upkeep at all, as well as fire off a variety of ice-based spells and abilities.
>-Heroes include Cirno and Team 9's members. Cirno is immortal as a fairy, but the others are not!
>-The most dramatic difference between Misty Lake and their basic counterparts is the construction line; though costly to invest in, it allows the casting of a number of providential rituals which allow access of recruiting powerful ousider technology; artillery, tanks, and riflemen who shoot long-ranged, powerful armor-piercing bullets.
>-Starts with uncharactaristically low magic for a EA nation, having LA gem generation rates.
>-Buildings are naturally ice-made.

>-The passing of centuries weren't kind on the humanity of ML - As fairies only beget more fairies, the aging and human subpopulation has had to be supplemented by stealing the childrens of other human nations, chiefly Ulm. "New generation" humans have little of the advanced knowledge of the world their predicessors hailed from nor their undying loyalty to the realm, but also lack the frailties of coming from advanced civilized society.
>-Due to creative differences, the mermaids have left ML. Ichtyids infatuated with the ice queen (Cirno) have replaced them.
>-Outside World technology has become increasingly harder to utilize. Though the rituals remain the same, units are more expensive and rifles are rare enough that only specialist snipers can hope to wield them.
>-Cirno has become a youkai and is no longer immortal, but is stronger as a result, able to use Perfect Freeze (normally a spellcard) as an innate attack. Other heroes remain the same.

LA Misty Lake - Kingdom of Ice
>-Greater fairies with cognative abilities comparable to men have risen to positions of power and they're no longer dependant on humans torun society, but the men of the outside world that helped found Misty Lake are now just legends - only fairies remain in Misty Lake.
>-Lose immortality, most units size increased, but gain glamour. Have noticably more capable melee units than TFoL and use ice armour.
>-Greater fairies are considered sacred.
>-Outside World technology is so ill-understood and archaic that only through rituals can it be restored to a functional state (rituals are now individual summons), but native earth magic users no longer exist, making it largely impractical. If they are summoned, they're sacred.
>-Can summon Fey Hounds.
>-Can make simulacrum (ice golems) through construction, of which the strongest is a multi-headed dragon. Simulacrums are sacred, even the snowmen of previous eras.
>-Temples produce water gems. Uses EA starting gem generation.
>-Cirno is the only remaining hero of this era.

Note that much of this is just rough concepts and spitballing and currently the assets on EA Misty Lake and whatever the base Fairy Nation are going to be called are under construction right now. The idea of Misty Lake in particular was to take the general trend of nations becoming more technological and humanistic/less magical as the eras pass by and turn it on its head while still ensuring that they aren't overwhelming in power during any one period.

I'm having troubles figuring out what fairies would worship enough to be considered sacred, especially at earlier eras.

In terms of flavor, wouldn't it make more sense for fairies to be high morale? After all, being stupid and getting killed in droves without caring is more or less what they're known for. Also perhaps a more flavorful way of increasing their ownership cost without just giving them high upkeep is to give them Cause Unrest. It would suit the "aggressively throw them at people to take advantage of immortality" playstyle as they'd be a nuisance in your lands but also a nuisance to whoever they're raiding.
>>
What would a LA successor to Phlegra look like?

My take is a nation where the Gigantes have degenerated to the point of having full on snakes for legs and maybe have gone completely mad/feral with the Oppressors assume the role of leader. A cult would form that worships the mad super-berserker giant snake-men as gods in a state of cruel irony and crueler slavery.

If they were high-morale, it would completely destroy balance as they would be a wall shooting elemental death at everything that can fly and be a wall shooting elemental death from behind like Dom4 Xibalba on steroids, for a sandwich of doom. I've heard that the fairies encountered in Touhou are largely trying to get out of the heroine's way, and most media seems to depict them as fearing for their lives when danger looms in-person, so it doesn't strike me that they'd have higher morale than a professional military, in spite of their Memento in Strict Sense description

Unrest is another option, but I'm not sure how it would scale given that fairies are meant to be spammed in the hundreds. It could easily render large parts of territory as well as whatever you conquer functionally useless.

One anon has been working on some Tower map, which sounded like a "scenario" map. sure hope he gets it finished, the map looked great. It also should come with its own nations, at least some of which should operate with that map in mind, like, if I remember right, there will be villages of non-humans on it that can be captured, and some nations can start recruiting them or something, but at least one permanently destroys them and gets bonuses for it.

I've lost all muh games as them but I've learned some things while doing them, and I had some ups while having even more downs so it was a good experience. But today I learned that Sidhe Lords could never be ultimate super combatsters as they can't go Berserk and that's a bit a sad, at least if they can survive being swarmed by skeletons, they can still win by outlasting skelemasters as those will flee unobstructed, and yet fucking Niefel Jarls are too good at both combat and magic and my Assassins DON'T follow their scripting despite what this general would want me to believe, yeah cast those Phantasmal Warriors, that won't bite you in your cute ass, dammit.

Well, I get that a dodgy glass tank is good too, but that's where the bottle with a fuckoff Elemental comes in with enough Research. I'd rather not, what if Marignon decides to spam Magic Duel? The man will be fine but not all those trinkets he is currently wearing as they would surely get sullied by the dirty hands of witch hunters. That just gotta be me with all those beautiful mage maidens, mage gilfs and proud handsome knights as well as men with the blood of Man and Fir Bolg coursing through their veins. He is immortal, you know? IMMORTAL. Yes, there's Soul Slay or whatever, yeah. Dozen of ways, cool. Name 11-12 more.
>You could do twice that easily with a handful of your research mages and some cheap lineholders
There's no fucking research mages and some cheap lineholders in a province not connected to my main territories and that only recently got a basic fort built. Is it so hard to understand? By the way, he also had a handful of research mages, you missed that? You wanted me to cast Barkskin on my non-existent cheap lineholders using my non-existent research mages?
And those weren't ordinary human cavalry, they were knights of the Chalice with offensive bless on them, even without bless they would be more powerful than basic heavy cavalry or my regular Man knights. Some cheap lineholders would get immediately slaughtered and make the mages run away like scaredy cats, ripe for some cavalry backstabbing.

So you've got a province outside your borders, significantly far that you can't move in forces to defend it. However, it's got a valuable mage in it and you somehow built a fort there?

This is not a situation you should ever find yourself in.

Usually it requires 1 sacrificial good player to hold cancer in check, he has no chances to win though. If there is no such a player then cancer wins.

>>
>>217704037
Sure. But unless you go with unique ones it can be reforged (or taken back unless the enemy specifically goes out of his way to hide it in his treasury). The unit himself can be quite treasured, if he has good base, lots of exp and a great heroic ability. I think the Green Knight meets the criteria, especially with Empowerment, which raises his battle potential, ever so slightly.
>>
I'm new to the game, and see there are tons of spells. I'm assuming this is like most games where 50-70% of them are niche or useless, and there are a core 10 or 20 spells that everyone knows by name.

If this is true, what are those spells? Are there good to know magic items as well?
>>
>>217709235
every single spell has a use time for 600 hours in SP
>>
>>217709235
It mostly depends on your nation. All nations tend to have several mid-game research goals to get their most important spells up, and after that they diversify more to deal with whatever needs dealing at the moment. Which spells are your go-tos depends on what your mages can cast. For example, nations with good Air mages tend to beeline for Thunder Strike in Evocation, while mages with plenty of Death mages will go for Enchantment and pick up Horde of Skeletons.

Having focused research early on is generally a good idea, because once you hit your research goals you effectively move up a tier in terms of overall power. If you hit your primary goals before the opponent does, you have massive advantage in combat. Knowing which spells you should be focusing on is mostly a matter of experience, but if you have more specific questions (like "I want to play nation X but I don't know which of their mages are good and what they should be casting") feel free to ask and I'm sure people will share their opinions.
>>
>>217704096
Saw the same thing - plan on taking the one throne he has away in a couple turns.

Pretty obnoxious that all the high level throne are clustered together in the in the middle of the map.
>>
>>217679096
Magic weapons bless.
>>
>>217693547
Or. OR. You can make a ring of UW breathing.
>>
>>217709235
The question is not about which spells are useful, but which spells are cost-effective. Also it's a lot more important what you can cast NOW even if it's suboptimal, rather than what's a very good spell, but is too high in research required.

So basically it's a lot more important to see your magic in conjunction with your battle and crafting mages, your troops and thugs and your overall strategy and game plan than just bluntly saying what spells are good (they may be good in some situations and may be not in others).

>>217712506

any of the tomes (E/N, B/D, A/S)

>>
>>217714459
There are damn a lot of them, I'll tire to list them. At first understand which paths and x-paths do you have and how many gems you can throw away on crafting. If you don't have H3 recruitable priests than it's wise to craft holy boosters for thronerush. Other than that almost all unical artifacts worth crafting, just check what you can reach.
Start with gemgens maybe.

>>217769947
22 is a 1/72 chance for them to both crit and roll a higher new DRN than your DRN roll. I guess if you want to deal with an entire army of them you'll want some more than that though, maybe like 27 so your absolute minimum will beat the average crit+DRN roll. At 34 that need a double crit (1/1296 chance) but that seems overkill.

Also there's the question of how much paralyze it would take to kill your SC, one stray hit or chaining them etc.

Dominions has a large fraction of useful spells.

For example, I'd call the following the core combat spells for death (in that they're strong in a variety of situations and you'll see players use them regularly in combat):

>horde of skeletons
>shadow blast
>darkness
>rigor mortis
>disintegrate
>soul vortex

However, the rest are still useful and most are regularly used too. Out of the pure death combat spell list (pic), I'd say there's only 9 or 10 spells which are actual garbage and almost never useful against anything.

Note that this is only a small part of the picture. I've ignored out of combat spells (rituals), which generally have a larger fraction of viable choices. I've also only gone with pure death spells and ignored crosspath spells.

It means it's not a well-written item description. Somewhere else it could be good writing. Here it is not.
>>
>>217798821
Wrong. In dominions, explaining what something does is NOT the only purpose of descriptions, far from it. We already have stat sheets for that.
>>
>>217798626
Are you calling Pythium black?
>>
LA Jomon with ME should be renamed Tengu Mountain. Literally every mountain/highland province can be enchanted to get you tengu villages.
>>
>>217799129
I agree, it's not the only purpose. But vanilla descriptions manage to fit lore and information about the item's purpose in one paragraph. Protection of Geryon is a good example:

>With a sizable sacrifice, a deal with the demon lord Geryon is struck to ensure the protection of one individual. If the protected individual is killed, Geryon will immediately drag down the killer to Inferno. The deal only works if Geryon is in the Infernal Realms

It describes the function of the item. It adds to the lore, by giving more information about what the demon lord summons do when they're not on the field. And it doesn't need 3 paragraphs to do both.

More importantly, an item description should be about the item. The item description of mayhem is a story about some boy, with 'then he made this sword' appended to the end. Cut out everything unrelated to the item and you'd get something like this:

>The pommel of this sword holds a ruby containing a piece of the sun. A previous pantokrator gifted this ruby to a boy who wounded the stars, in exchange for the boy never again striking at heaven. This sword afflicts the wielder with the boy's madness, while the ruby grants the wielder a portion of the sun's might.

It could use improvement, but this would fit in a dominions item description. It's a reasonable size, includes some hints as to what the item does, and only mentions the boy as necessary to explain the item.
>>
>>217802060
What you say here is true, and your proposition for a new description is good as well. However, none of this has anything to do with the description being long or not being restricted to mechanical informations. The only problem with this specific description is that it's off-topic, not that it's too long or contains some lore.

Furthermore, talking in detail about the item's story is not a bad idea if it's an artifact like it is here. This kind of stories is a whole and non-negligible part of why such mods are cool. Removing the story entirely or just putting a single line long summary of it is some kind of vandalism. The item is cool partly because of its long and interesting story. If it doesn't interest you, you don't even have to read it.

And by the way, many of the base game's descriptions are extremely lack-luster. It wouldn't hurt at all if they were improved with more lore and details.

>The only problem with this specific description is that it's off-topic, not that it's too long or contains some lore.
I see other problems as symptoms of it being off-topic. For example, it's so long because it's not talking about the item at all.

If the item did take three paragraphs to describe I'd say you probably need to rethink the item, but at least having a description that length would be justifiable.

>Furthermore, talking in detail about the item's story is not a bad idea if it's an artifact like it is here.
It doesn't fit with the existing game. In my opinion, having mods fit into the existing game style seamlessly is desirable and on its own is enough of a reason to avoid that kind of description.

>And by the way, many of the base game's descriptions are extremely lack-luster. It wouldn't hurt at all if they were improved with more lore and details.
That's a reasonable position, but I like dominions' minimalist approach. You pick up a scrap of information from one description, another scrap elsewhere, and slowly you start to build up your own picture of the world.

I like that more than having a description of the world just handed to me.

Elfing people is dangerous. Usually when people seeing their neighbor being elf'd their first though is 'lucky that that isn't me', and their second though: 'it's time to remove elves'.
So basically it's totally not worth it to take a lot of provincess at once from someone if you have a lot of neighbours and can be invaded yourself.

>>
>>217807913
I don't know, personally I have never been succesfully elf'd before, as well as raided with birds, because I were able to bring down their raiding parties and took everything back (well maybe those guys wasn't really competent or even on par with me in terms of efforts, but still...).
But I saw once with my own eyes a Vanarus who took about 12 provinces from someone in one turn (Vanabogs + Trapezing Sages spamming air elementals), then shortly ALL his neighbours invaded him (myself included) and he went AI after some struggling.

So I'll never ever will raid someone with a lot of expenses on my side if there are players around in a good position to invade me in turn.

How really scouting is important in MP?

In my experience mages and sacred troops always are invaluable, so for me it's really hard to spend gold on scouts if I have forts where I can still recruit mages and/or sacreds.

Is there any examples when investing in scout network gives you some kind of profit (I mean material and not aesthetical)?

VERY important but not more important than mages. If you can only get scouts from your forts I wouldn't bother.
>>
>>217830375
National scouts usually aren't worth it, for the exact reason you mention. Being 1 recruitment point instead of 2 like the average mage helps a lot, but it's still a poor choice most of the time.

Indie scouts though, those guys are great. They're fairly cheap, they're effective enough, and most importantly don't require a scout to be recruited. Those can give you a ton of info on your neighbors. Most importantly troop movements, like are they moving their armies towards you, or maybe they're attacking someone else and are ripe for a back-stabbing. Knowing who your neighbor's neighbors are is also a big asset, since you might be able to use their help in a future war. Beyond that, scouts can give you a reliable idea of which nations are doing well and which ones are struggling, without having to rely on the information others might feed you.

Having some idea on what to expect from the other players allows you to make more informed decisions and plan you long-term strategies with more confidence. You don't necessarily need scouts to do well, but reliable information is very valuable and if you have a source of indie scouts (or have national scouts that don't require a fort), it would be a mistake not to make use of them.
>>
>>217830375
If you have an indie scout province, it's usually good to recruit a scout there every turn until you have dozens of them. It's harder if you only have fort rec scouts, but making a few to keep track of thrones and ship gems around can still be worthwhile.
>>
>>217833336
If you have literally no other sources of scouts, you'll use em.

I'd consider using shadow imps or black servants over fort rec scouts since imps are super cheap and easy to summon and black servants have utility as ghetto thugs and both can carry BVCs without getting sick. If you don't have access to those, though, you still want scouts and you might just need to waste fort turns
>>
>>217833664
>Those can give you a ton of info on your neighbors
Well, that is kinda important, but scouts are really inconviniet: they are slow, fast to die from patroling forces or even 15PD, they are consuming gold every turn (or even gems if they are summonable), they are also giving inaccurate reports (no info about mages, elves and number of troops as well as about Scales other than tmperate one's), so there is no guarantee that you'll find out something important in the moment that something important is happening.

It's nice to learn who is the neighbour of your neighbour (still that information may be aquired on the thread), but in the most cases you are fighting not someone via agreement with the 3rd party, but with the neighbor the most easy to invade or if he invades you.

Basically I think that scouts is a burden for the earlygame economics and you can only buy them later in the game to spy on Thrones or to carry gems and items for the army.

Scouting wars between other players is extremely important

Dominions is a strategy game, dumbass; knowledge will trump material strength nine times out of ten.
Scouts have nearly infinite uses and value. You can use them to track troop movements, discover fort construction sites, spy on enemy army composition, formation and what spells they are using, find out what neighbors are losing wars to either pounce on or help them while there is still time, taking the occasional province without PD, transporting gems, etc. Any player that underestimates scouts is doomed to lose, so always recruit at least one per turn, indie if possible.

turn 19 and i'm at 400 HP
first test game against the AI and i really don't like this bless, maybe early Hel-elfs aren't the best for this birb but you get a discount and he's frankly overcosted

biggest problem is that the birb isn't very good at actually killing things, all wins are from fear aura, which is nice but you need da corpses to nomnom

suggestions appreciated. also this is w/o death scales
>>
>>217869363
Yeah exactly, the burd sucks at killy. Idk how much of that is from the dominion, but it's pretty hard to get high hp even with carrion eater or whatever it's called.

At the cost you could just get a dragon and have 3x the expansion. Or rainbow/meme bless for sacreds. Huge hp pools are only good if you can't get hurt like a monolith or something with high prot. Which will eventually lead to auto route.

The premise of the pretender build is flawed. You want a high hp dude, but anywhere outside the dominion you'll get your HP reduced on an exponential scale which will reduce your HP even further. You are fighting with a pretender so risk losing your bless if he dies. And it requires your nation to popkill your greatest source of income, your capital, in order to reach any kind of mass.

I love the idea and admittedly tried it before too, but I could never figure out how to make it not shit.

What are the most and least useful summons for their tier? I keep hearing wolves and ogres being cost effective, but what about mantises? Drakes? Is it worth it to stack a drake rod on a dragon in order to spam them?
>>
>>217886803
Wolves are only good for patroling, since they are animals they are almost useless in repairing walls, also despite good scaling they require quite a lot of mage-turns to amass proper force, but they are cost-effective.

Ogres aren't that cost-effective and as troops they are shit. Still, they are good at repairing walls, so their only use is emergency measures if you need to hold your castle. Normally you never need to summon them.

Killer Mantis is the tool to surely kill Invulnerable or Etheral thug or troops like ghosts. So very situational summon. The same may be said about drakes, their breath attack is very handy, especially if you have a lot of them and enemy have no resistances. It's used to be quite a nive strategy to summon them with a mage vielding Dragon Sceptre and under the Dragon Master enchantment, but when both those things becomes availiable it's too easy for your rivals to give their troops proper resistances and so the drakes becomes useless. Still if you manage to summon 5-10 of them in the early-midgame they can win you few battles against an unprepared foe.
>>
>>217888013
Ogres are primarily for evo-catching. Their high HP means they'll be a priority target for enemy mages.
>>

They cost gems, and not a little ammount, so if you need to catch evos it's a lot better to buy militia in the nearest forest and put the upfront.
Those E-gems you better spend on crafting. Still, as an emergency measure ogres are OK. Basically you never use them unless you forced into defensive war with your forts being sieged.
>>
>>217886803
>mantises
They're terrible - 2 attacks per square and shit damage. I've heard people use them against ethereal/invulnerable troops, but I have never seen it.

>Drakes
In general, drakes are overpriced without Dragon Mastery/Drake Scepter and by the time you have either of those they're obsolete.

I have found that handful of cave drakes out front in squads of 1 can make a decent evocation magnet and work well to disrupt enemy formations.

>>217888013
>>217888750
>Ogres aren't that cost-effective and as troops they are shit.
They're tough and their 25 damage clubs will pulp things with a good hit. They'll outperform most human infantry in a fight.

At 2 or less earth gems each, that's an acceptable addition to an early game force. Don't expect them to perform miracles, but simply having more troops does often win fights at that stage of the game.

>it's a lot better to buy militia in the nearest forest and put the upfront
I wouldn't use ogres as evobait, but militia get in the way of your troops fighting the enemy. High hp troops like ogres can take the flanks and pull evos away from your elite troops without preventing them from reaching melee.

On practice that is never happends, enemy mages starting to spam evos on the closest and the most hp-dense troops always, so if your ogres and elite troops advancing simultaneously then they equally will recieve evo-damage based on their hp-density at the moment. Sureit's nice to have more high-hp troops early in the game with nice morale, but as I said, they cost gems, 10 per cast, and if you have reached Constr 4 then any proper thug equiped with 30-40 gems worth items will wipe out all those useless ogres at once as many times as needed.
It's a really bad strategy to waste your hard-earned gems on non cost-effective summons when a bit later you can invest those into crafting, Globals and powerful battle magic.
>>
>>217889837
What kind of const 4 thug with 30 - 40 gems of gear is going to reliably kill an equivalent number of ogres? One good hit from an ogre will kill a lot of stuff.
>>
>>217890104
One elf or giant or maybe some national hero with Vine Shield, Gridle of Might and maybe some armor or helmet can handle as many ogres as you field against him as many times as you throw them at him.
>>
How do I play Ulm? Their utter lack of sacreds is alien to me, as is the fact that their mage production directly ties into how well they can generate units. Is it just researching Construction/Evocation and using combinations of Black Plate Infantry/Knights/Iron Priests?
>>
>>217890480
Despite not being sacreds their troops are too good for the said Era, so they can outperform any type of enemy troops thanks to their heavy armor and weapon.
I never played them in MP, but in test runs all you need to expand is knights, then research some battle magic and craft and steamroll everyone with magesupport and heavy thugs.
Braindead nation on par with LA Atlantis.

Take turmoil, production, growth, and misfortune. Take max cold for flavor, and max magic. Ignore your Black Priests and focus on rushing high alteration for buffs for your high armor units. Resist poison and resist fire spells are a good start.
>>
>>217890104
If it's just ogres with no mage support, an elf should do it easily. With cavalry defense and vine shield I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't even get touched.

Of course, mage support changes that entirely. A single tangle vines or earth meld and that elf thug is going to get his head smashed in.

>>217889837
Many nations don't get elves, giants, or thuggable national heroes. Throwing gems into efficient thugs is not a strategy which is widely available, especially with limited research.

Thugs are a lot more vulnerable than summons when mage support is on the field. 40 gems of ogres takes a significant amount of blasting to get rid of. An 40 gem elf thug often just takes a single spell cast.

>On practice that is never happends, enemy mages starting to spam evos on the closest and the most hp-dense troops always
If your elites are close in health per square to standard humans, the ogres are nearly double that and should therefore take most of the spells unless range difference is great. Even a single ogre left in a square is nearly as much hp as a standard square of humans. By the time hp density is higher on your elite troops, most of the ogres would have to be dead.

Anons, what about a game where the timer equals the current turn number? So you have 1 hour for turn 1, 12 hours for turn 12 and so on?

Thoughts?
>>

>Take turmoil, production, growth, and misfortune. Take max cold for flavor, and max magic.
That's just awful advice.

Ulm's mages ignore Drain scales, so there's no reason not to go all-in on that. With Drain and Turmoil, taking Misfortune is retarded unless you love losing gems, so either go neutral or take some Luck if you have the points for it.

Since Ulm doesn't need a bless (a light magebless for Priest Smiths might be nice, but it's optional) and they get "free" points from taking Drain, you can afford to take an awake expander without tanking your scales. Or, since you can expand pretty efficiently with just Black Knights, you can get a Dormant pretender and load up on magic diversity and/or some high non-native paths for mid-to-endgame rituals and forging.
>>
>>217892213
Sounds like the early turns would be a pain in the ass. Probably doable for a small game though.
>>
>>217892241
>Ulm's mages ignore Drain scales, so there's no reason not to go all-in on that.
Does that affect fatigue generation as well? Because that's a potential concern.
>>
>>217892450
I'm actually not sure if it does, I'll have to test that.

Even so, between ubiquitous Earth magic and cheap forging, MA Ulm is better able to deal with mage fatigue than almost any other nation.
>>

Why not just do it at blitz speed over a couple hours to get to turn 20 or so, then switch to a standard 24h timer?

That would achieve much the same result without people having to be NEETs to avoid stales while the turns are short.

If you're talking absolute game start, yes. Already at blood 2 you get very good stuff (considering it will be like turn 6) with spine devils and fiends.

>>
>>217910162
Why the fuck not? It seems super easy to program, even a global setting for what to cast when you have no more script. That's dumb as fuck and makes battle magic garbage. I get to choose between 4 missing lightning strikes, or two ones that hit then my mages are worthless.
>>
>>217910185
I'm not sure, but I don't think so.

I know that if you target Mind Hunt at your own fort (for example when you suspect there's an Assassin or a Spy) and there aren't any enemies it'll just tell you it couldn't find a viable target. I assume Seeking Arrow works the same way.
>>

I like R. Jordan reference and japanese ingrish.
>>
>>217910857
use battlefield-wide spells like arrow fend and wind guide rather than making every single of your mages cast air shield and aim.
>>
>>217910857
In any battle that matters, 4 attacks are way better than 2 slightly more accurate attacks. A2 mages should typically be casting Storm Power -> Thunder Strike (x4), not self-buffing for half the battle and then cast a few lightning bolts. If you really need buffs, use the big ones like Wind Guide so you're not wasting turns on every single mage.

I'm not saying it wouldn't be nice to have more control over what your mages are casting though. It's something people have been requesting for many years, but it's never been implemented.

I've always been interested in this series but the terrible ai and multiplayer focus puts me off. Are the devs aware of the shit ai, and if so, do they plan on improving it?
>>
>>217911748
They improved it somewhat with the release of Dom5. It's still not good, but it's noticeably better than it was in Dom4.

That said, I think they simply don't care much about the AI.
>>
>>217911748
It's a multiplayer game. You might still be able to get 100 hours of fun out of the single player, but multiplayer is where the real game lies. Against the AI you don't need 90% of the spells and items which is the actual fun part of the game.

People are being harsh to it, it's not that bad, even if it prefers to play it very safe and isn't master strategist and tactical genius. I mean, it now has better understanding of the Trinity Pretenders and can sail!

People play stuff like Total War series and even enjoy it. Even though I remember that in Empire Total War (or whatever it was called) the AI didn't even know how to transport troops through seas, making nations like Britain invincible until one patch.

Looks interestin hows the learning curve?
>>
>>217906528
That's definitely not a school, but rather a path. Like Conjuration is a school, Water is a magic path. In my opinion every magic school is extremely useful, but if I'd have to pick then it'd be Thaumaturgy.

The most useless magical path is definitely water hands down. Inefficient summons, lackluster evocations, very few effective items. It has a nice global I'll give it that. Otherwise very few uses out of water, but they tend to be very effective when it does actually become useful.
>>
>>217913009

There is a phrase around here that's, "6 months in Singleplayer." It's when a noob start in MP thinking they're hotshit and make stupid noob mistakes. They belong back in SP to learn the ropes before jumping into MP. 6 months is considered to be a "breaking in" period to learn the basics, so it's up to you to think about what that means. You get the replay value for 6 months for like 20 bucks or whatever steam sells it for, which is $3.33/month, which is like a coffee a month.

If you're still not sure just play around with Dom3. Dom3 has a free demo and you can feel it out without having to resort to pirating. I did the same thing and that's what got me hooked for all these years. Generally I would agree with pirating, but for dom5 it is highly inadvisable.

Which brings up a point, can we add to the OP that Dominions3 has a free demo for people to try? I feel like most people don't know this fact and it'll help out new comers get a feel before they jump in. It'll also cull some disgusting piratefags asking for the latest patch.

>Can I try it?
Yes. There's a free demo for dominons3, which plays exactly like dom5.

Thanks for the feedback gang. If I'm not mistaken, perhaps the biggest complaint that Dom veterans have towards the ai is that it doesn't produce strong units? And a mod fixed this which greatly strengthened single player sessions?
>>
>>217914442
Actually the main primary problem with the AI is that it doesn't use its mages effectively. Magic is a big part of playing Dominions "correctly" and the AI is pretty bad at choosing when and how to use its mages.

Not recruiting the right units is a secondary problem, which does indeed get better when you use the mod that prevents them from buying indie trash.
>>
>>217914442
This is a part of the problem, yes, but not the only issue with the AI. Another big issue is that the AI almost doesn't use magic. Also, the AI designs its pretenders very badly (which can be fixed by first creating the game with your own pretender design as a human player and then going AI on the first turn of the game). Oh, and another problem is that the AI very frequently suicides its armies on independant provinces such as thrones.
>>
>>217914442
It's not that they don't produce "strong" units, it's that they don't know how to use them with the laser like precision humans can. For example, to AI a Vanharl is a a2b1 spellcaster cast that spams evocation spells and has a nice auto buff and decent defences. However, the same unit to a human is seen completely differently. Sometimes they are used as thugs that can fight entire armies single handedly. Or they can be spell casters that use magic to buff themselves to melee combat better. Or they can be stealthy assassins, with the proper items, to destroy opposing armies' commanders on a duel to cripple and sometimes outright annihilate an army without a drop of blood on the battlefield.

AI zergs, human innovates.
>>
>>217907386
Imps are good. Depending on what you're fighting, Summon Imps may in fact be the BEST spell available at level 1 research.

Worth noting that flying battle-summons no longer default to attack closest, so you can frequently get commander ganks with it.
>>
Does Fire magic give increased leadership or something?

One of my mages has more leadership than all the other mages, and the only other difference is that he got an F random.
>>
Are 1v1s any fun in this game?

Against AI it's a complete steamroll, and I assume it would be the same with people, whoever wins the first big battle snowballs from there.
>>
>>217913381
It gets better, but then it gets worse. There's very varying quality throughout the series, even if the first book is one of the weaker ones.

The ending was compiled by another author
>>
>>217916585
I'm not sure if it would be very interesting, since the most efficient way to play would be to make a blessrush build and either win before the first year is up or fail your rush and get counter-rushed.

I wouldn't recommend the cave as a priority if you have anything else to do with your expansion party. You don't have to worry about starting a war by taking/passing through it or anything, but the province itself probably won't be worth much to you in the long run. Sorry I can't be more specific, I'll send some details this turn.
>>
>>217972420
On the contrary, caves are one of the few sites that are worth using Acashic Knowledge for a wealth of gems and resources.
>>
>>217974483
I didn't mean in a literal sense that it's not worth it because it's a cave. I'm saying that due to the diplomatic circumstances that cave in particular is probably not a great use of an expansion turn.

To be honest, a fair bit of Arthurian legends is shit and gay ass already, here's what I remember from reading about one of the "legendary" knights of the Round Table and his "great" adventures:
>ride on your horse because adventure
>encounter a bad knight
>knock him out of his saddle, take his horse and armor
>encounter several bad knights
>knock them out of their saddles, take their horses and armor
>encounter lowly bandits
>knock them out of their saddles, take their horses and armor
>encounter a bad baron
>knock him out of his saddle, take his horse and armor
>encounter a man-eating ogre (maybe with 3 kind daughters)
>knock him out of his saddle, take his horse and armor
>encounter a skeleton knight
>knock him out of his saddle, he gets up, knock him out of his saddle, he gets up, knock him out of his saddle, he gets up, knock him out of his saddle, he gets up, OH SHIT WHAT DO I DO
A tale about some other knight of the Round Table was somewhat more interesting, because while it followed the same stupid narrative of knocking people out of saddles, it had an overaching plot where that knight was under a false impression that his girlfriend/wife was cheating on him and there was much adventuring before he realized that she wasn't and their relationship got repaired.
>>
>>217974483
why is acashic knowledge worth using in a cave? higher density of mag sites?
>>
>>217979241
Using vanilla map constraints, a cave providence is guaranteed to have at least three magic sites, and can have as many as 7 at once.

FFA games are meme-tier even in quick little 20-60 minute games, let alone in a very unbalanced game with matches that go on for months. Why are disciples games so rare when Dominions' default "flavor" mode is so inherently retarded?
>>
>>217988025
People are afraid of teaming up with complete strangers or something. I myself like the idea of a disciple game, as it means that there would be at least one person in the match not out to screw you over. I mean, there's a chance of that being true even for your pretender or disciple, but screwing your team over is a practice that is looked down upon, unlike diplomancery.

>much harder to gang up on a team than on one dude
>full popkill cancer flat out doesn't work; some partial popkill like Asphodel and LA R'lyeh go from garbage to good when you remove their retarded popkill mechanics since they otherwise have full rosters of good units/mages

>do a turn system for nation picks so you can't just stack the broken shit
I think that is mostly that disciples games put a lot more work into the nation picking phase while normal games just let people pick as they want.

If I wanted to balance non-disciple nation picking, I'd try having players bid on nations with an amount of pretender points which needs to be left unspent. Strong and popular nations will effectively have less pretender points to play with than weak or unpopular nations.

I think that would be a reasonable comparison to setting up a proper disciples game with a pick order.

>harder to meme rush people to death because geography will likely only allow your team access to parts of other teams
Two rush nations who can only access one member of a team will just proceed to wreck that guy twice as hard then 2v1 the other.

>two-team games will probably have large enough teams that rushes are less effective
I've played a two-team game in dom4. One team went tribless meme rush. The other went a more sensible bless. Wanna guess how that went?

It was actually very fun and I'd like to do another.

>much harder to gang up on a team than on one dude
I don't agree that this would be a good thing, but I also don't think it's that much harder to gang up on a team in disciples. Ganging up on people is, at least in theory, how dominions prevents snowballing. Weakening that mechanic is not something I think is beneficial.

>full popkill cancer flat out doesn't work
I might believe that if I hadn't started next to and immediately got rushed by an Ermor/Sceleria cancer duo on my last disciples game.

The people who play cancer nations often aren't in it for the wins and don't care if it's a bad idea.

>able to let the pretender go dormant and still take expanders that wake up turn ~6 to deter rushes even further without forcing awake expander scales
That's a fair point. I think vanilla should have better anti-rush options.

On Seeking Arrows: are there any modifiers for them besides luck? Like caster's magic level or strength stat. I also take it that the armor helps mitigate damage, right? The paladins in >>217978541 were wounded but not that badly at the start of the battle (one had like 12 and the other 8 HP left).
>>
>>218013025
They're 8 armour negating damage, plus/minus the usual DRN rolls. You'll generally need at least two to reliably kill a human scale commander.

Do they work equally as good on anyone? Meaning, there aren't things like ghosts that could ignore them, right? I do get that creatures like giants with their healthpools would have to be pincusioned to inflict serious damage without unbelievably lucky rolls.
>>
>>218013991
So far as I'm aware it counts as magic damage. Luck items might help, but ethereal won't. You'd probably need to test it though, I haven't exactly made an extensive study of it.

To be fair, my only exposure to C'tis was that EA single-player game in Dom5 where I tried meme thug vanjarls to see what all the rave was about, but the C'tissian AI knew where and when I would attack its provinces so its armies were crushing them.
>>
You got fuckin 20 minutes Mictlan, move yo ass
>>
>>218018718
As far as I can tell, the AI tries to simulate human unpredictability by randomly shuffling troops around, which can make invading them unpleasant since you can't really predict what's going to be where. Couple this with above normal difficulty giving them more to work with and suddenly you realize that while fighting AI feels stupid, it can still randomly manage to defend itself. Still, my guess is that proper meme jarls should shred majority of C'tis' stuff and maybe suffer slightly when facing falchioneers. Maybe heat tired them out and there was just too much to fight.

Well, depending on your god and how strong exactly, there are a fair few globals which are well worth pursuing. Mother Oak's a fairly easy to cast gemgen (and will likely be contested), but is well worth putting up if you've the ability. Gift of Health is most often noted for it's affliction removal, but also greatly increases base HP of your troops within your dominion, so that's an excellent option.

Ritual wise there are a number of summons worth using. Sleepers make excellent generals for your armies. Wolves (can Call of The Wild for wolf factories) make for good cheap patrollers, although no longer the pinnacle of siege defence. Killer Mantises are good for countering ethereal/invulnerable troops. Treelords are good for fort defence. Later on Faerie Queens are good for breaking into Air.

There are too many good N items to list. I trust you can look up boosters yourself, but aside from those the standouts are vine shields (for thugs), reinvig boots (for everyone), and endless wineskins (for armies not starving).

Combat magic, you get a shitload of real nice battlefield wides and summoning. Howl is spectacular. Mass Regen is great. Swarm (and Creeping Doom) are good for chaff production and assassination. Relief and Mass Protection are alright. For gemless casting standouts are Sleep Cloud, Rage of the Cornered Rat (fantastic with tramplers), Web and Panic. Plus a few worthwhile self buffs (personal regen's nice for communions)
