I've heard talk that in the Myth and Magic arc, vampires are going to get overhauled to have more variable traits (some worlds will have vampires that can't cross running water, some will have vampires that obsessively count dropped grains, etc) and boogeymen are being shafted entirely to make room for something else more variable that will attack lone travelers at night. Is it likely that dragons or any other creatures are going to be similarly overhauled to be more variable as well?

Replying to last thread:
>[DF combat] is [...] not balanced or tested in any way.
>>233509424
>>it's not balanced for fun, it's balanced for realism
I wasn't trying to challenge that. What I was trying to say is that it's not balanced for that either. Features are introduced without fine tuning them (neither for fun, function, nor realism). I'm not even saying that it's a bad developing approach, it's just that that's how it is in DF development. For example, Toady didn't research medieval combat injury statistics, various martial arts competition outcomes and try to match df combat to that.
He added a bunch of mechanics (force, material density, body structures) and just left it at that. But it's obviously not a 100% accurate simulation because hundreds of factors are missing still. So despite being based on nothing but "real" data and calculations, it's not an accurate depiction of reality or real combat outcomes. Not to mention that the AI is not written in a way to take advantage of the various techniques.
>>

I have no idea, but I'm certain that you ctrl+F the FotF replies of the time the myth generator got announced, you'll get your answer directly from the toad's mouth.
>>
Speaking of vampires, I just outed a vampire serving at a court as a pikeman, after which he confessed, and nothing further. Isn't he supposed to go hostile? After I attacked him and he parried me, he ran away screaming for mercy...?
>>
>>233522059
People likely already figured he was a pikeman on account of the pike he was carrying around so they probably just didn't think it was a big deal.
>>
>>233522440
Pretty stranged they weren't convinced otherwise by him initiating his evil-speech. Anyway, I chased him into the fields where the crafty sucker turned around and stabbed his pike into my left hand. Somehow I managed to gain possesion of it, after which he stratched my leg open making it unable for me to stand. So now I'm laying in barley dodging this dude's kicks while swinging my bronze two handed sword at him one-handed (the other being impaled).

We just submitted fighters with skills and equipment based on a point system and an anon made them fight each other in the arena, whoever won advanced to the next bracket with extra points, until only one winner remained.
To tell you the truth, it's actually a bit of a controversial topic in the general, lots of people were unhappy with the last one, and it seemed like the tourneys often caused a surge in shitposting after they concluded. They were a lot of fun though, but it's been over a year now since our last one I think.

I would also enjoy playing a succfort, but let me tell you how it'd go down
>first guy is all excited, posts some pictures of the early days but nothing interesting happens because it's too soon
>second guy gets the save, plays it, and posts like one shitty cropped image with barely any text, passes the save on with barely any progress
>third guy writes a passionate record of his turn, describing how the dwarves are flourishing under his care and the bodies from year two (that were never mentioned) are honoured. Sadly, nothing really happens during his time.
>fourth guy doesn't post at all, except to pass on the save once he's done
>fifth guy never picks up the save

So Jadeboots is up and running, it has 20 fully kitted military dorfs, (save for two who refuse to wear pants) 10 hammer dorfs and 10 military dorfs, i grouped specialists into groups of 4, so 4 smiths, 4 farmhands, 4 woodworkers, 4 masons / stonecrafters, ect.

My main problem now is that I'm short on laborers, (Which should be fixed next migrant wave) and that my fort is a mess, with ad hoc stockpiles and lots of stone strewn all over the place. All the workshops are set up how i llike, though i may migrate a few of them to different z levels, and I may need to dig a few more layers for storage and living space.

I can organize it, its pretty easy.
the question is how many people would be up to play it and commit properly?

so lets start from that and some basic rules:

/dfg/ Succesion Fortress by Anons 01
>meet place for direct organization: a discord channel? (I created one already)
I guess its the most easy and direct method to coordinate everything.
>list of players
people who is serious about doing this, step up.
>initial setup of the game, which theme for the fortress, etc.
whatever we decide among all
>1 year? in game turns
whatever we decide among all
>proper gameplay and progression updates of your turn
at least 1 post with some pics every 2-3 months of your turn posted on /dfg/
>respect time schedules
self explanatory

all this is up to debate, nothing decided yet. stop being autistic and play with other autistic anons!

Only problem with discord is that it kills the need for the thread, which can ruin discussion in the thread. I think it is a good idea, but only if everyone gets smacked down for talking too much in the discord itself. Namefag for eligibility, allow people to join in later, 1 year turns unless anyone thinks it won't work with the gimmick.

>proposed gimmick
Nightmarish swamp. No necromancer nearby unless we decide on an easier setting. Aquifier optional. No building below ground except to the first story to make basements and storage pits until the fifth year. Alternatively, start with no metal and no coal, except for a battle axe.

Of course, there would be some recipes with dubious ingredients in them that sound disgusting but should taste good, or we could just have a section of prepared fly brain and toad liver smeared with acorns.
I do think this could be a fun project to work on though.

embark items: no ores, no metal, little to none tools, a lot of wood.

playstyle: no early turtling underground.

I see you're new, maybe some context will help you here.
The only reason the thread didn't erupt into an immediate shitstorm the first time you posted the discord is that we're dead at the moment and the thread is more new than not. The last person who tried to start a discord here was a beloved content creator and he was practically run out on a rail.
Dead though we may be, we have a tradition of fiercely protecting this general from the social ills that have ravaged other generals. Chief among them being inappropriate name/tripfaggotry and discords. Our general has remained a calm and comfy bastion in the sea of shit that surrounds it for the better part of a decade for our efforts.
No one can stop you from posting whatever you want here, but I urge you to consider other methods of organizing your thing. The method you've chosen is unlikely to go over well.

It may seem unlikely to a newfag like you, but I've seen too many places die this way to take it lightly.

If it's important that you be identifiable for continuity between posts. For example, the last guy that tried to organize a succession fort tripped as Succanon so that he could organize here in the thread and no one gave a shit. Both tourneyanons tripped as well. The guy who maintains the OP namefags as OPFAG when he lets us know the OP has been updated. Archiveanon even tried it on when informing the thread when he was archiving things posted here, to mixed reaction. Generally if your identity is relevant to what you're posting and you could not be otherwise identified by the content of your post (e.g. drawfags, Max, Relicwebs) then wearing a name or trip is fine. If it bleeds out into posting for which your identity is irrelevant or unnecessary then it stops being fine. Unfortunately names and trips are mostly used by attentionwhores and wannabe ecelebs these days, but there is a right way to use them.
>>
>>233574112
I completely understand people bitching out about discord. Shitty thing. I think if we do a succession game then either in irc or the thread with names attached someone has to say "hey, I'm interested in playing" and then later say "hey, put me in wherever", then we're off.

Settings are likely to be a shitty start with few resources and an evil biome. Depends on how much people who are interested bitch about that/propose better ideas.

I might start it then. I'm sure more people will express interest if the game is actually running and they have a place in line they can pick. Also if you want to join, just say if you want anything changed. Should take about a week or a little less for each person to go through a year of game time and post updates about it, but more time can be allowed if they just give a heads up. If someone buggers off for a week and nothing is heard from them then the next in line can take up torch.

Settings as sort of agreed upon currently, subject to change over the next 12 hours:
>world generation: small, young history 50 years, frequent ore, the rest default.
>embark place: evil place with good amount of wood (swamp?), no aquifier
>embark items: no ores, no metal, little to no tools, a lot of wood and seeds

The birthcry of the dwarvish people will not be a cry of joy.

Orange Chicken Meat Loaf "Roast."
Make it happen.
>>
>>233581604
Roast the chicken with cottage cheese stuffing. Brush the chicken with the orange juice and sprinkle muesli over it with a little bit of extra sugar.

You just made a very sweet chicken.
>>
>>233583250
Nah, now that I count the proportions, the end result would be orange juice with just enough slimy chunks in it to make you gag a bit. If roasted (or just heated in general) enough it would be a layer of black tarry substance on the bottom of the container, with some dried chicken strips sticking from it.
I... I might have invented the dwarven waybread. It will last months in the backpack while traveling the wilds, if only because no one will want to touch it. Just a thought of having it as the last thing to eat is enough to give one more boost of endurance to reach the next fort where some real food might be served.
>>
>>233583709
Reminds me of those dwarven wine, dwarven wine, dwarven wine and quarry bush leaves "roasts."

>>
>>233548040
Goblins are basically easy mode. They don't need to eat, and the lack of empathy mess them less likely to get stressed about dead bodies.
You just need to give them the entity positions for fortress management and military organization.

Any tips on building pit traps? Most of the videos I see relate to cages, atom smashers, drowning, or lava. How can I make a simple pitfall trap? Can I just build a bridge over a huge pit and make it drop downward instead of up?

You can't make it drop downward, but you can make it "retract," which is functionally the same thing (bridge disappears, bad guys fall.)
>>
>>233590794

The answer to preventing a Discord from ruining the thread is to aggressively moderate it and limit it such that no one can discuss anything except a very specific reason you're using the platform.

If you make it for a succession fort, make two channels, one for questions related to the fort and one for OC/links, and ban anyone who does anything else, it stops that issue.

Completely enclose their emplacements (including a roof) and make it so that the only path from there to the firing zone breaks line of sight. Make sure they have ammo and can quickly get to more. Marksdwarves climb to engage in melee when their quivers are empty. They'll take the shortest path to achieve that. So how do you roleplay this? I've been playing on and off for years but now I wanna seriously try to connect with my dwarves. I'm having a hard time making up a storyline that fits all the constraints of the game, like mandatory dwarven caravans that MUST have a connection with the mountainhome (diplomat) and the migrants being random bunches of retards. Also the needs system means every fort is more or less identical in anything but layout.
>>
>>233638510
>the needs system means every fort is more or less identical in anything but layout
I don't get this complaint. You're unhappy that there are gameplay restraints that require you to have sustenance industries? I mean, that's like being mad that you have to have bullets in a ww2 shooty game. It's just a basic game mechanic.
Anyway, best advice I can give for RPing your fort is read dwarves' thoughts and prefs screens and try to satisfy their specific preferences. Create arbitrary groups based on commonalities you find there. Low hanging fruit is grouping them based on their favored deities, but you could do other things like taking dwarves with similar mineral or metal prefs or all dwarves that like a particular alcohol and theming sections of the fort for them. Like a metamorphic quarter in the metamorphic layers where only dwarves who like metamorphic stones live, or a peach wine district where dwarves who like peach wine work, and peach wine is the primary available booze.

I used to stream in the Aussie timezone but I got sick for a couple of weeks and by the time I recovered I didn't care for continuing my current fort because it was pissing me off.
It's fun having people watch me play DF and ask questions about the fort but when the fps drops low there's only so much small talk you can do while waiting for shit to get done at 15fps.
If I'm playing by myself at least I can put on something to watch in the downtime.
I think of I stream DF again I'll have to mix it up with other similar games so i don't get burnt out
>>
>>233644695
If you continue reading the thread you'll see his problem was solved. You were headed in the right direction, but should know that floor grates are vertically impassible and nothing tries to path through them, and don't impede horizontal movement at all. Anyone know of any software that can easily be used to sketch out fort designs? I tried the one that comes in with the LNP, but it's unintuitive and generally just makes life harder; it would be easier to simply start a new game and draw out designations than use that shit. Do all you guys just draw shit on graph paper? Do I need to reduce myself to mspaint at maximum zoom and just use pixels as tiles?

If you're lucky it's on the far side of the map and it'll turn back into an elf or whatever before it reaches your fort.
After it's dead, check the combat log and make sure no-one got bitten.
If anyone did, put them in a squad by themselves and lock them in a sealed room for eternity. You'll have to wall it up because they'll bust down the door when they transform

https://discord.gg/f6m5gFq

already 6-7 anons. we will wait 24h to see if anyone else wanna join to start.

current settings:

world generation: small, young history 50-100 years old, frequent ore, the rest default
embark place: evil place with good amount of wood (swamp? a cold one/tundra?)
embark items: no ores, no metal, little to none tools, plenty of woods
playstyle: no early turtling underground, no cages, no traps ((b)uild (T)raps). possible aggresive against other civilizations/traders

advices are appreciate. be rdy for the incoming shitfortress
>>
>>233671586
DF legends mode is sort of fucky. Basically, NPCs are labelled as what they currently are instead of what they always were. Aban was a dwarf in the year 2, but later on became a night troll. But because they are currently a night troll, legends mode lists them as one even when talking about their pre-conversion events.
>>
>>233668642
Werebeasts don't trigger traps or pressure plates.
>>
>>233669251
Woodcutters don't gain weapon skill from their job.
>>
How come you don't see scars on randomly generated people in adventurer mode? Like a swordsman that has his left hand missing and a long scar on his head
>>
>>233673567
But I do though? It only happens to histfigs who fought and got wounded though. You can even use legends mode to look up how it happened. I think its just fairly rare for a fight to be that evenly matched, usually fights are decided in the first few strikes.
>>
>>233668954
I never used to, but this game always fucks you over so much and in such weird ways that I've been doing it lately. 1.2 Changes:
-Airships added, certain civs have better ones than others. Ornithopters also added as slower but larger and more stable form of air transport compared to biplanes, but both of course are smaller than airships.
-Corpse Men renamed to the Dzulum race, entire deathland biome will slowly become more like Xibalba, the Aztec underworld. Some fun new critters have already been added to reflect this. Be afraid.
-New civ added, the Cajun species. Humans who mutated to become amphibious, they dwell in the swamps, party hard, and do a lot of crime. Instead of battleframes they fight their enemies with gigantic crocodiles and oversized anti-battleframe infantry weapons.
-New civ added, the Formorians. England got taken over by mythical giant overlords and they along with their human slaves have sent mighty airship fleets all over the world to restore the British Empire. There will be 1 Formorian civ per world because they are pretty spread out. Formorians also don't use battleframes but the Formorians themselves are gigantic and so can be considered living equivalents. Also, they have the best airships.
-Mormons can now have three civs per world, may change this later.
-Artificial Eagles added to the Union's roster of living weapons.
-Misc fixes.

As always, feedback is appreciated.
>>
>>233673567
>>233673976
Maybe you two are talking about different NPCs. Most NPCs aren't historical and thus have no history from which scars could have come. They're procedurally generated on the spot as needed for the game to appropriately fill sites when they're loaded for the first time.
Historical figures can have scars if they fought in worldgen. Every scar you see will have a corresponding injury event.

That's kind of silly, I enjoy the game regardless of the roleplay thing. Anyway, your points:
I do read their thoughts and prefs, and didn't mention anything about that in the post so I dunno where you got that from, and I didn't claim the dwarves were identical, only the forts.
I'm guessing your last point is in regard to the "hard time making up a story line that fits [...]". This is more my autistic need to have everything make sense if I'm to get immersed, not "0 creativity" as you put it.

Essentially I had a hard time making up an intersting starting point where we were sent to by mountainhome which then proceeds to send us supplies we have to pay for, especially when they bog us down in fishermen afterwords. Likewise, it's weird we would set out on our own only for all the caravans to know where we are and a diplomat to tag along to take orders. Should have been clearer on that I guess.

All that said, you seem disproportionately angry at my post and this confuses me
>>
>>233690587
Oh right, the second post. Forgot that. The thing there isn't that they are all identical, but all of them share so many traits that I feel it lessens their individuality a lot. But I concede I said it like they were almost identical.
>>
>>233638510
Try to focus on just one single dwarf. That dwarf is the overseer, they're the dwarf that started or was ordered to start this expedition. Get into their mindset, figure out why they did so, figure out what they would do next when faced with a challenge, note where they spend their time, who they like and dislike. Note the personalities of the people close to them, note their personal struggles triumphs. Build the fort as if it was at their whim, because they're the overseer.
Once you've got that down (basically babby mode DF roleplaying), try doing the same for the dwarves that the game says are in charge. What does the mayor want? What does the baron want? What sort of rooms would the king order to be dug out? How would the captain of the guard's personal attitudes influence the layout of the jail, or the justice system in general? What sort of conflict might arise where the views of a subordinate noble are different to those of their superior? What extra orders would the manager slip in just for himself?
And if it all gets too much to keep track of, write it down! It'll be a good story.
As to the migrants, people migrate because they want a better life. The fisherdwarves are useless, but they're also useless where they used to live. If you had no work prospects where you lived, wouldn't you move somewhere where you MIGHT find work?
>>
>>233677489

And yes, it was in fact the guy that needed killing.

Protip for those who don't know, if you get a hearthperson quest to drive out a group of bandits, you only need to kill the one in charge. I personally like doing it hitman-style and sneaking into enemy bases to assassinate the target. But this is mostly because I never grind so I can't solo my way through mobs of enemies usually. Sometimes if I have a bunch of companions though I'll lead a direct assault.

Figure out the cause(s) and fix them. It's hard and requires some micromanagement, but I've got an 80 dwarf fortress going for ten years now with only one tantrum. Clear bodies immediately, check needs and feelings periodically, micromanage as required.
>>
>>233677489
Mainly just /a/ and /tg/ nowadays, though I'll hop on /lit/ or /his/ every once in a while.

newfag here, what's the best way to have a large numbers of dragons for a single world? what do i need to change in the advanced gen?
>>
Dear mister Toadman, when is the next devlog?
>>
Alright, big question for you guys.
Does anyone here know the structure of region files? Ok at least know where can I get that info?
Im looking for a way to see if you can embark on a certain coordinates just by analyzing regions data, before you even try to embark.
The idea is to roll coordinates for local area and then check in the files if that coordinates are viable for embarking, re-rolling them if they are not.
>>
>>233729178
Just have a large number of megabeasts. 25% of them will be dragons. Downside is that you will have equal numbers of hydras, rocs and bronze colossi as well.
>>
>>233731947
This is the sort of thing you'd probably have more success asking on the forums desu
>>
>>233732082
Cant you edit raws to not have other MB tho? Just delete them or something?
>>
>>233732082
Another downside is that with large enough megabeast count you'll start having trouble keeping civilizations alive through worldgen.
>>
>>233732743
Yes you can, but why would you? Or do you have a world ruled by dragons type of scenario in mind?
>>
>>233732082
thanks anon, my idea was to have tamed dragons in my fortress but since they are so rare in my games i was curious if there was something i can change in the adv to have more dragons.
>>
>>233733440
Just don't overdo it with those megabeast counts or you'll end up with a Monster Island type of world where you can't strike the earth anywhere without multiple lairfuls of monsters duking it out immediately after unpause.

>Thanks. I resorted to giving my hammerer a masterwork steel hammer, hoping he'll take care of all my problems.
Remember when we gave our hammerers the least effective warhammers we could acquire, so that they wouldn't kill an important or valuable dwarf? Remember how we used to rejoice when a strange mood produced a bone or wood warhammer, because there's no way anyone could be killed by such a weapon? Things really have changed.

Minor personality faults when? Like cleptomania, getting too drunk and roaming the fortress indecently, refusing to leave your room until the manager or a friend comes to talk to you. You know, little things
>>
>>233741201
I'd like that too, but then again sometimes I'd just like to play a massive 300+ dorf fort like in the older versions. All this focusing on personal feelings and stress tends to restrict the scale to smaller settlements where you have to know everyone's needs to keep them sane and happy
>>
>>233741612
Could be implemented so that you can safely ignore it without dwarves going insane though, as just a little flavour here and there. So those that want to watch for it can, but those that don't care don't have to
>>
>>233741853
Or maybe it could be set in init files. As stress handling should be.

Have caskets/slabs ready to designate as soon as anyone dies and dedicated corpse haulers that feel nothing when they see a dead body

So yeah, after looking into it a little I would say Increasing megabest pop is a way to go as others noted.
I would play with switching megabeast and semimegabeast tokens around in raws, like setting them all to be semimegabeasts, keeping dragons as megabeasts and then setting both population caps. It would let you to have all the other beasties (with even numbers of them) and you could set dragons population just to the point you want it(them being only megabeasts around after booting all others to semimega status).

It may interfere a bit with history gen, so if its getting cut short you would have to tweak 'Percentage of Megabeasts and Titans Dead for Stoppage' and 'Year to Begin Checking Megabeast Percentage' parameters.

All that being said I dont really know what are differences between megas and semimegas from the tokens perspective besides them having two different popcaps you can set and megas death counting towards cutting historygen short.
>>
Hey buddy, found this in warframe general and thought you might like it
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mPTCq3LiZSE
>>
>>233745079
Oohhh... now that would be terrifying. Set dragon (megabeast) count to fuckhigh and other monster (now semimegabeast) count to something tolerable, gen a 1000 year world and enjoy a world filled with fully grown firebreathers. While we're modding, let's give them flight as well, as they should have.

Proper real time multiplayer, no.
DF has turn based multiplayer mods though. Mentioned many times in this thread.
They allow someone to host a fort and a group of players to watch in real time, and you can change who has control.
It's great for helping a newbro play or if you have a couple of people that wanna take turns every 30min or whatever.

Anyone here play adventure mode? I successfully raided a vault with my thrall necromancer vampire, got the slab, then tried to tame the demon. The demon said something like "Yes master, I will do your bidding," but still attacked me anyway. Eventually I had to banish it because I was taking heavy damage. I asked it to yield and to end hostilities but it just said "You first!" I tried yielding myself, but the demon continued to attack me. I tried asking it to be my companion, but it just said "My duties are here." (He was the leader of a goblin civ). What gives? I thought he was supposed to be my slave

Being a thrall (having the OPPOSED_TO_LIFE tag) is probably what made the demon attack you. You also can't claim sites if you're not a member of a civilization (if you've ever played as an outsider you've probably run into this problem), and I don't think you can retire at any sites if you have the OPPOSED_TO_LIFE tag.
It's a really weird quirk, but you can circumvent it by using the bodyswap command in DFhack to take control of a different creature.

What a terribly optimized embark. What the hell did you even spend all your points on? You brought quivers but no crossbows or bolts, you brought 15 of a single meat instead of several meat from different creatures for free barrels (hell, you don't even need meat, just butcher whatever pulled the wagon and forage plants), you didn't bring enough seeds, and you probably don't need the rope, bags, or cloth, unless you want the cloth to defend against moods. You didn't bring any picks so you can't mine anything or farm underground crops until the first migrant wave comes; if they don't bring an anvil, you need to wait for a caravan to show up. At the very least, take some stone and ore with you, build yourself some tools.

You only need 1 male animal of each type, maybe 2 tops in case one gets killed, having more females means they'll breed faster.
>>
>>233775307
>optimized

Hardly a concern in a heavily forested area, and even if it wasn't it's rather trivial to make pots in most circumstances.

>unless you want the cloth to defend against moods

Anything big is good. The bigger the better. Natural weapons like horns are a bonus.
If you can get grass in your pit, bulls, yaks, and water buffalo are better fighters than the majority of creatures you'll catch. They're real big and have hooves and horns which are devastating in combat. Predatory animals only rarely bite because bugs, which removes the most effective combat ability they have from consideration and makes domestic grazers that much more attractive.

They would make for an interesting megabeasts, and easy ones to make too.
Just copy giant elephants, give them shear-able hair and make them spawn in savage taiga, tundra and glacier biomes. slap a megabeast token on it if you feel like it.

given how giant animals scaled up it was probably like a cow sized version of this.

Mammoths aren't exactly known for being rampaging monsters though. I'd probably add them as a tundra and taiga animal instead, with the same role of large herbivore as tropical elephants possess.

would it be best to try to get into dwarf fortress with the normal base game or should I use the starter pack? I have a friend telling me to use the ASCII tileset and that it grows on you, is there a version of that that is easier on the eyes?
>>
>>233814968
Your friend is trolling you. Just use the LNP, it comes with a tileset pre-installed. If you don't like the look, try the other options (it comes with several). Every time I see people post ASCII screenshots, I get irritated, especially if they're trying to explain something.

>>233813858
Probably not many, I came here shortly after Inuyasha started airing on Toonami; it led me to discover Kazaa/filesharing, video codecs, anime (had no idea what the fuck anime was until I accidentally downloaded an episode with Japanese audio), hentai, then it all eventually led me to this shithole.
>>
>>233813594
I was thinking about how it would be possible to overhaul the cooking system to make more sense.
Just a bunch of reactions playing off various food tokens really.

What Im more interested in is food spoiling and cooking being one of the things used to preserve it, like salting meat and fish, drying fruits, making sauerkraut, pickling plump helmets, the list goes on.
Neathercap barrels could act as a way to extend the expiration date of both raw produce and cooked meals.
Ability to cook soup, making it possible to make 10 servings from 1 piece of meat/veggie and a bucket of water?
Maybe implement tool use, like you would need to make a pot to cook soup?
Spices! Milling rock salt for use as an ingredient, drying and milling things like pepper or paprika.
>>
>>233815615
LNP is great even if you want to play with the ASCII. Just use it.
>>
>>233814968
Yeah, best way to learn is vanilla.
There are a lot of ASCII variants available.
http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Tileset_repository
And a lot of ready-made color schemes.
http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Color_scheme#Custom_color_schemes
If you're looking for "easy on the eyes" then changing your color scheme can often accomplish that without touching the tileset.

Some minor tweaks would make DF a lot more accessible to the public.

The sidebar is fine (well not really, it's a mess, but the concept of selecting options in a sidebar is fine), but why can't I click on the options with my mouse? In fact, does it even need to be text? Simply having some buttons with obvious visual cues (pickaxe-dig, axe-chop trees, plant-forage, shovel-channel, farming-hoe, animal-pen, barrel-stockpile, hammer and saw for buildings, etc) would be intuitive and easy to use. Maybe just add a "simple mode" option that does this sort of thing, and an "advanced mode" for the classic text interface. I know this shit will never happen, but I can dream.

Having to use Shift+. and Shift+, to move layers is clunky. I'd rather use the mouse wheel; scroll up to go up a layer, scroll down to down a layer. Leave the map zoom to keyboard controls or have some preset zoom levels and cycle them with middle click. Or possibly make use of the side mouse buttons I always forget the existence of.

When I am designating with my mouse, it's cool that I can draw the designations, but it would be better if it was like zoning in SimCity2000 or something, where I could select Dig, click a spot, hold the mouse button down, drag to extend the rectangle, then release the mouse button to designate.

Military stuff needs some SERIOUS work too. Wouldn't it be great if the sidebar just had a Sword icon, I click it, it brings up a military screen that shows my military commander, his equipment, and all the squads under him. I can make new squads or disband squads from this screen. If I click a squad, it shows all the dwarves in the squad and what they are equipped with; I can dismiss individual dwarves from here and draft new dwarves by clicking vacant spaces. Or alternatively, just add military management to Dwarf Therapist.

>>
>>233840770
Any embark setup can be made to work, unless there's an immediate and massive danger in the place you plan to embark (including all peasants with no items. Deconstruct cart -> carpenters shop -> training axe -> chop trees -> get your fort going). It takes only a year or two to train dwarves from dabbling to legendary in a given skill so the skills you pick are largely just for flavour and to designate dwarves for a particular task. Ultimately, your embark is more about how you want to play your first year or two than anything else.
>>
>>233843093
Training axe can't cut trees any more.
>>
>>233843221
Ah cool. Ok then, lets say just about any embark with at least a pick and/or an axe is workable. My favourite is usually to take along a bunch of cassiterite and copper ore to get a bronze industry going right off the bat.

first time posting on /dfg/, first embark.

I am in a calm temperate area that has sand, clay, flux, and deep and shallow metals. I though I was embarking on a river, but there is a waterfall and the river is down 4 levels. should I scrap this embark and start a new one? I want my first fort to be like a beginner tutorial and I'm not sure if this will cause me extra problems.
>>
>>233843626
Meh, might as well.
I mean, why not?
At least it gives me a good thought that I helped someone recently.
Doesn't cost me anything.
>>
>>233846509
thats a fine embark, and the river/waterfall is not a problem at all. in fact it will be good for a final/advanced project when you already know the basic stuff like understanding 3D, ramps, etc. or pumps, etc.

strike the earth fgt
>>
>>233846509
The only problem waterfalls really give for noobs is dwarves pathing through the lip of the waterfall and getting washed off. Just build a 3-5 tile wide bridge over the lip of the waterfall. As long as it covers all the tiles that dip below 7/7 water you should have no issues with dwarves being swept off the waterfall. Don't scrap it, it'll be fun! Canyons make for great locations for big or aesthetic projects.
>>
>>233846546
Sure, there are egoistical/altruistic reasons to spoonfeed. The posts also bump the thread. But they shit up the quality of the general because nobody wants to read questions and answers about basic strategy or mechanisms of the game. Thus, they might drive away other posters with more interesting content. At that point the general becomes just a bit better than reddit.
>>
>>233840770
I used to experiment a lot with different setups but in the end it doesn't matter that much. Now I'm just using a setup I saved at some point:

>miner-administrator
>miner-mason
>farmer-herbalist-brewer
>farmer-cook
>carpenter-mechanic-craftsdwarf
>military/leader/tactician (because I like to start military early)
>woodcutter/herbalist/fisherdwarf (outdoorsy type who can defend themselves and can join the militia in a pinch)
>>
>>233847236
Not him, but lets say that I don't want to build bridge over the lip. Would building a bridge somewhere else allowing passage and restricting the routes through the lip be fine?
How about not building the bridge and still restricting route through the lip, would they still use it when needed because there is no other way or would they refuse to go there?
>>
>>233840770
Something that I like to do is take at least one dwarf who is proficient in building design, because it's so fucking hard to train but it actually makes a pretty big difference if the bridge to your dining hall is masterwork instead of just fine.
>>
>>233847946
If you build it elsewhere, make sure that there's a good blob of restricted area around the lip and on the riverbed. Look at the pathing cost for a restricted square, and manually look at the minimum cost path through the lip from the position that most favours the lip over your other bridge. Is the path through the lip dramatically more expensive than the path through your bridge? If so, good, if not, add more restricted tiles or dwarves WILL be swept to their deaths. If you don't build a bridge at all they will path through the lip no matter how much you restrict traffic, except it may cost a little more FPS than it would otherwise. Building a bridge somewhere is absolutely vital for waterfall embarks.
>>
>>233846509
Flowing water contributes to early FPS death.

I wouldn't worry about it since it's your first embark and you're guaranteed to make mistakes before FPS becomes an issue.
>>
>>233847946
Build it close enough and mark it as high traffic AND mark the lip as restricted. As long as the total pathing cost is lower over the bridge dwarves will stay clear of the lip.
>>
>>233843626
A good embark profile isn't as basic as you'd think. If you ask 10 DF players what a good starting kit is, you'll get 1 guy say something sensible like >>233843369, and 9 will tell you they bring a broker or a doctor. And that's without even getting into exploity tricks for cheap containers, efficient labor distributions for future strange moods, the peril of fruits brought at embark, etc. Fine tuning your embark is a fair subject of discussion here, and can even get crunchy if you want to have a technical discussion.

Hey anon, what's the deal with wood all being the same colour aside from the cavern stuff? The various surface woods have their own specific colours but it all comes out the same in rendering. Is there some way to make the game display wood colours properly?

>Hey anon, what's the deal with wood all being the same colour aside from the cavern stuff?

I like to go down and start carving facilities in first few stone layers, using dirt layers as a place for farms only.
You cant smooth and engrave soil, so really digging into stone is what you want to have your fort smoothed/engraved.
>>
>>233855056
I really wish I had saved the kill count on that one. It was one of those forts where I really relied on a long hallway of stonefall and weapon traps to protect from the green menace, but it still managed to rack up a sizeable list of names.

And another were beast obliterates my dwarves.
I'm fairly new to the game, so your advice is needed.

>Were beast attacks my fort
>I send dwarves to the burrows and seal the fortress
>3 of the dwarves were outside gathering plants and were wounded by the werebeast
>I make a squad of these 3 dwarves and station them in the quarantine zone
>One of the dwarves loses consciousness in the dining hall and is unable to go to the quarantine zone
>He transforms into werebeast and mayhem ensues

Adding to that, other 2 dwarves who were in the quarantine zone didn't transform. This one guy was laying on the floor of the meeting hall and I was unable to do anything. What would you do in that situation?

Just for curiosity sake I looked up df woods densities.
http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Wood#Types
Lets just say those are some dense trees.
I almost thought there was a mistake made somewhere along the way, with weight being stated in kg/cm^3 while it should be kg/m^3, but the values still were off for various woods.
At least if there is a discrepancy with m and cm, the ranges are being somewhat accurate, with lightest feather-wood being akin to balsa and heaviest blood thorn resembling afrikan blackwood.

It's your farmer busy?
Do you have other labors enabled on your farmer? (Disable them)
Do you have enough stockpile space?
Do you have enough barrels, bags and pots for your stockpile?
Maybe assign a second farmer. Usually 1 or 2 high level farmers can take care of many huge crops by themselves but if they're off doing other jobs they'll ignore farming in favor of other shit

It depends on your style and the embark.
If I expect the embark to be safer then I embark with more lv5 Crafters to get a head start on furniture.
If I'm embarking on a volcano or digging straight down for magma in the first season I take guys with forging skills.
If I'm digging out a huge aesthetic fort I'll take like 4 miners.
If I'm embarking somewhere dangerous I'll take 2 miners, 4 hammerdwarves and a doctor and get underground asap

On average though I take
Miner/weaponsmith
Miner/armorsmith
Farmer
Cook
Brewer
Carpenter/doctor
Mason/engraver

How are you running your fort? Im desperate for more migrants until the 200-250 pop mark, can never have enough.
Double up on jobs so you can aim to have two high level guys on everything (farming, brewing, cooking, Mason, engraving, carpenter, crafters, both kinds of jewelers, smiths, mechanics, clothiers, leather etc).
Employ guys with good music skills to work in your bars and temples.
Everyone leftover give them labors that just get a speed increase instead of quality, like butchering, tanning, wood burning, furnace operating and all the spare farming ones like milling plant gathering/processing etc.
Draft those same hauler/misc dwarves to the military part time so they train 4-6 months a year.
Aim for 10 squads as soon as you have the weapons and armor for it. Crossbows are cheap and easy to make enough masse.

How can I get my dwarves to socialise with each other properly? They're not supposed to feel lonely
>>
>>233871294
The reason so many forts die of FPS death is because everyone likes to build 3x3 central staircases. This causes pathfinding calculations to eat all your CPU cycles once your fort is large enough and has a lot of dwarves going everywhere at once. The solution is to use ramps; the downside being that it's a lot harder to design efficient fortresses with ramps.

Smaller worlds help your fps, smaller embarks help your FPS, don't embark on rivers/brooks helps your fps, making sure to use reservoirs so liquids can settle also helps.
>>
>>233872829
>Smaller worlds help your fps
I don't understand this one. Why does this help your fps when you're playing on a small map section with your fort?
>>
>>233873050
Because in the background, the game is still spending some system resources calculating things that are happening in your world. Larger worlds have more shit happening in them.

>t. rimworldfag
Fuck off.
>>
>>233874126
Union and American are the same species, but the adjective for Americans is Union. Confederates are a different species from Americans.

Americans:
-Have skin, hair, and eyes of a gray to white color.
-Are resistant to supernatural effects like being reanimated as a corpse, becoming a werebeast, or becoming a vampire (they can be necromancers though).
-Are eugenically engineered to produce living weapons known as homunculi.

Confederates:
-Look like Caucasian humans with slightly more Neanderthal-like features.
-Are stronger and sturdier than normal humans
-Are innately disciplined and are taught military tactics from birth
-Are nigh immune to disease.

Both are the result of selective breeding and the culling of undesirables from the population, but the Americans did it with mad science and cutting-edge technology, and the Confederates did it with harsh trials designed to weed out the week and witch hunts that rounded up and exterminated mutant populations. In both cases, the end result was a separation from baseline humanity and the creation of a new human species.

Are there guns in this wild west mod? I didn't find any on my very short run.

>>
>>233875091
Most civilizations will use guns yes, from muskets to more advanced models like revolvers and bolt-action rifles. You must just be unlucky. Also, you will probably want to fight skeletons with blunt weapons as the fact that they are all bone makes them quite resistant to cutting damage.

Also also, if you are fighting skeletons that means you are in Xibalba. Moving to conventional reality would probably be a good move, because you are currently stranded in a predatory hellscape filled with demons and undead.

>The reason so many forts die of FPS death is because everyone likes to build 3x3 central staircases.
I don't like 3x3 staircases either, but this is bullshit. If you're really skilled at efficient fort design, you can use ramps effectively to achieve pathing parity with stairs, but usually rampways will be less efficient. Stairstacks in general are a pretty efficient way to design forts, and the only legit efficiency strike against 3x3 is that the center tile will be be dead pathing weight in all but the very highest traffic stairways.
3x3 stairs only get shit because they're a low-effort newb flag and encourage cookie-cutter forts. Helping newfags away from them is fine, but doing it with snake oil is dishonest.
>>
>>233883464
I think you've made an error installing your tileset. It looks like you're using gemset from the sprites, but gemset's walls definitely do not look like that.
>>
also wtf can I use to design cool mining layouts? I want some fractal design snowflake type of shit for my fortress, the (never)mighty Icetomb.

>>233884708
wtf gemset always looked like that to me. and Im using PyLNP launcher so dunno
>>
>>233884995
I haven't touched LNP in a long time, so I can't say for sure what you're doing wrong. As I recall there's a button on the launcher to update raws and/or saves, which you should use everytime you change the graphics. Many graphical tilesets alter the raws, especially for walls, and not all of them alter them in the same way. Improperly changed tilesets is a really common error to see in new players' screenshots.
>>
>>233884425
I'm not trying to be dishonest. It's been mentioned on the forums. Due to how calculations work with stairs, they are more resource intensive than ramps. When you go up/down a ramp, it is basically the same as walking a flat path, while with staircases there is extra calculation going into it. And since you're making staircases the only way to traverse your fort, it takes a toll on your FPS when you've got 150 dwarves going up and down those stairs nonstop. The pathfinding issue is because you have so many different staircases, when a dwarf decides "i want to go here", the pathfinding algorithm has to do more calculations because you have so many potential paths for a dwarf to take to get from point A to point B.

In fact, I LIKE central staircases. Nearly all my forts use the 3x3 central staircase (but I leave the middle as stone so I can smooth and engrave it). However, it's the truth that they will hit your FPS.

I had a weird dream about Toady. He killed someone in like an apartment or something at night. He had pulled his carpet back in a space that was just in front of the kitchen and was breaking the concrete up so he could bury the body there. For some reason, I helped him put the body there. Toady then proceeded to attack me for no reason. I woke up in the middle of the night right before the punch hit my face.
>>
>>233886235
It's been said here too, and it was bullshit then as well. Just because someone on the internet says something doesn't mean you should believe it uncritically.
The pathing cost to traverse one tile of ramp and one tile of stair is exactly the same. The pathing cost to calculate a path through one tile of ramp and one tile of stair is exactly the same. What does cost more is diagonal movement, versus orthogonal movement. If you replace a 3x3 stairstack with a 3-wide ramp you're forcing a lot of diagonal movement for dwarves to avoid walking over each other, since they're essentially just walking down a 3-wide hallway. It also causes either horizontal sprawl or inefficient ramp turns. And on top of that it forces the horizontal sprawl into the direction of the ramp's descent unless you want to add more dead pathing weight for landings or hall branches.
The most efficient possible fort is a "spherical" fort built around a central staircase. You can achieve an arbitrary decided minimum number of tiles between any two points in your fort that way. It simply isn't possible to the same thing with a rampway. In practice most players that use central stairstacks aren't designing their forts that way, but they're deviating from it by degrees, whereas a ramp-centered design is functionally the same as a flatfort with all the pathing inefficiency that comes with it and none of the convenience of having your fort visible on one z-level.
I believe you that you aren't being dishonest, but you are wrong. I don't expect you to believe me uncritically either; if for some reason my arguments aren't sensible to you, just read about how A prime pathing algorithms work, and apply what you learn to your own analysis.
>>
>>233887380
If you mean do they block the space directly above them, then yes.
You'll want your fortification two z-levels high if you're trying to plug a mineshaft, as I believe it is possible creatures to move diagonally upwards.
>>
>>233887876
The logic seems pretty straightforward to me.
>The stress of making DF caused Toady to have a Tantrum resulting in him killing somebody.
>You helped Toady hide the body because you don't want DF to stop updating.
>Toady killed you to make sure there would be no witnesses.

I mean my marksdwarves have a nasty habit of fucking off right through fortifications to hammer goblins. Having a wall or floor above them has been recommended before, but when I tried this it still happened. Even locked, enclosed pillboxes don't seem to be escape proof. Iron bars outside the fortifications work but are tedious to build
>>

>>
>>233888442
Actually, it's not the same. When a dwarf uses a staircase it counts as 2 steps, when a dwarf uses a ramp, it counts as a single step. You can verify that right on the wiki.

However, after looking up FPS saving strategies on the wiki, you do have a point. It seems FPS loss is more about how many tiles are open to traffic rather than what is being traversed. Instead of using ramps, I'd save more FPS walling off inactive areas so the algorithm ignores them and killing useless animals so they aren't pointlessly pathfinding around my fort.
>>
>>233890483

Were enemies getting too close? A shallow trench adjacent to the fortification might help.

I've taken the suggestions on board, particularly the very excellent one about diversifying the diet of our dwarves with the added bonus of extra barrels. Unfortunately the limit is no tools at start except for the axe to cut wood, but thankfully the area is heavily forested which will make that easier. Looks like we won't need to bring too much of our own beyond what we need for firewood. Our expedition leader told us also that there were no dingos or crocodiles out here so we shouldn't need additional axes for self defence.

We'll need a steady source of food once we arrive though, so we also brought along some hens with us. I took the wise decision recommended of making sure we have the one breeding rooster and one spare in case the other one dies.

I gave them the bloodsucker tag so that humans would routinely enact pogroms and genocide them but it seems I didn't account for the fact that the bloodsucker tag actually makes them suck blood and kill people.

This actually makes things fun I feel because people who play the human race will have to segregate their ghoul population into ghettos, turn them away when they migrate in, or just kill them outright.

We set out to find the place for the new dwarven trading settlement in the 100th year since the founding of the Glazes of Kindling by the dwarves of the greater northern mountain ranges. Expansion out from the dwarvenhomes has been stalled since The Searing War, during which over four hundred innocent dwarves were slain by the bloodthirsty goblins of the Scandalous Cruelty, apt to their name. It has been ten years since the last days of the war and now the King has ordered that a settlement be made in goblin lands to show them that we desire peace and trade. With time we may even open a route to the humans and elves of the southern forests.

These woods are pretty sinister though. The hens have been clucking a little quieter ever since we entered it. Uncle Urist told me that there's nothing good abouts trees - nothing that an axe can't fix! Well, only one. A copper one. The king told us that the goblin diplomats wouldn't let us settle in the forest with the steel hammers and axes we would normally bring since this was meant to be a gesture of good faith. It almost seems like a trap, but I wasn't going to tell him that. No picks either. Apparently the goblins had called them WMD's and said they'd be sending inspectors to make sure we didn't have any. Not sure what's wrong with a simple pick.

We won't have any problem with food at least. Plenty of seeds and a rich VARIED diet for the boys. Melons, eggplants, strawberries, pickled coyote lungs, and dwarven rum, wine, and beer! Uh.

Well, we drank most of the booze.

Here we are now. Gempriced. I think.

miner 5-judge of intent 1-appraiser 1, diagnostician 1, record keeping 1, consoler 1
miner 5-metalcrafting 5
miner 5-weaponsmith 5
miner 5-armorsmith 5
miner 5-blacksmith 5
farmer 5-herbalist 5
building design 5-mason 5 (building design is hard to level)

1 male/1 female cat
1 male/1 female dog
1 male/5 female turkey

anvil
5 copper picks
1 copper axe
15 plump helmet spawn
5 each of the other seeds
15 of each type of booze
7 different types of meat (one for each dwarf, just in case)
whatever's left, spend on coke/ore/sand

Let your farmer do some woodcutting, send him foraging until you've cleaned out the immediate area, then have him grow plump helmets. Architect builds some workshops, slaughters whatever drove the wagon, and starts churning out wood furniture. Everybody else just digs until the magma crafters are live.

To add, I've got very few purely df related images in the top... well, year worth of pages in my general downloads folder. I'm still interested in the game, still like reading what you autists are up to, and do hope Toady adds shit like custom decorations, item features, and so forth so I could watch little dwarven sawyers and joiners do their thing alongside smiths and masons and such.

This is nice, I like the storytelling, thanks for effort.

So, I've got a bit of an issue and no real direct way to solve it, as far as I know. I've got a volcano on my map, and I want to set up some magma forges/smelters. So I dug a tunnel halfway across the map and figured it'll eventually flow over to us, and we'll be all good to go. It has been a year and a half of in-game time, and the magma appears to have stopped, as it just spreads out and evaporates. But I can't really dig more punches into the volcano, since each one basically gurantees that a dwarf dies, whether it's digging it in or carving a fortification.

I was going to try and use DFhack to just delete the wall tiles and expand the tunnel with that, since frankly the time needed and lives sacrificed to expand it otherwise would be excessive, but I can't seem to find how to do that.

Z+1: <- bridge + volcano tube
Z+0: channel under bridge tile

Block the route to the bridge (IMPORTANT) and leave the one to the channel available, set a dig job at the tube tunnel by the bridge, they'll do it from below the bridge.

Outside crops and plants will grow if the biome is right, regardless of temperature. t. just did a Freezing embark with fucking apples and pears growing in it.

What? I'm not looking to make lava mist.

What would be a good non-retarded square font/tileset? Preferably something with at least some of the same feel as in plain vanilla.
>>
>>233905210
That's just a picture, I don't have one of a bridge punching method that I can think of the filename for, lava brought this one up so I grabbed it.

You should have used a screw pump with all the parts made from magma-safe material. Pic related.

Wh... why? What has FPS ever done to you?

I fucked it up; lava can flow diagonally, and I drew the walls too hastily without paying attention, here's the fixed one

Toady already said that villain update will take longer than expected, so I think the big wait will maybe start in Summer 2019

>When a dwarf uses a staircase it counts as 2 steps, when a dwarf uses a ramp, it counts as a single step. You can verify that right on the wiki.
http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Ramp does not agree.
>For example, if a dwarf wants to go down and to the north using a stairway, it will have to take two steps: one step down a stairway and one step to the north.
>one step down a stairway

Sort of. Economy was disabled altogether, so dwarves will not hoard coins. You don't have to make any, and if you do, they'll remain in unbroken stacks in your coin stockpile.
>>
>>233907353
Great. I just want to make a bunch of coins out of gold to hoard for a vault, and incase I can somehow trap a dragon.

Thanks, playing with it now. Don't know if I'll get used to so few blocks shown on the screen compared to plain vanilla.

By the way, this is a map of our world after I did some digging around in the xml with legends viewer and a map making tool because I was curious about the wider world.

The map should be fairly self explanatory except that the yellow squares are the fortresses of our civilization; the Glazes of Kindling. The red are of our sister people The Perfect Vestibules. Presumably they think they're better than us, especially since they're the larger and wealthier group. Also because they've never fought a war with the goblins.

In our world though its not the goblins that are the true evil of the world - its elves. Of the nine wars fought in the 100 years of our world, 7 were wars of aggression by elves against humans, which is a large part of why there are so few humans in the world now, mostly living in the elusive kingdom known as the Confederation of Girls.

Also one seventh of the denizens of our civilization are goblins. I don't know if they live side by side, presumably some of them are good people, but they have to go back.

Is anyone making a new thread?

Pretty cool map.
>Confederation of Girls
Kek, with a name like that no wonder they were getting invaded left and right.
>>
>>233908083
Wait a fucking minute, what? How did you get that map on the left? I do some tabletop gaming shit, and jesus fuck, I already wanted to do some DF-inspired stuff, but I didn't even know that shit existed. How? Is there a good way to export Legends in a simple enough manner for practical use?

looks like a great amazing map/scenario. legend mode can be so funny.

I think our duty will be to help qt3.14 humans against the filthy elfs and also keeping the goblins on check, pushing them back into their evil west forest
