So years back I was working on a fangame where the essential plot was that new Pokemon were invading Kanto from an alternate dimension through a spelacial rift.

They were referred to as "Hyper Pokemon" and were simply abnormally large Pokemon with a unique color scheme, a unique ability, and insanely high stats. They were uncatchable boss Pokemon. Once SM came out and ripped off my idea I started working on a new plot, involving a looking tower from an alternate dimension.

Just fuck my shit up, man. It's like all my ideas are being transferred directly to Game Freak.

So far I have:
A rough map of the region (in my head).
Three rivals with individual character arcs
9 decided interesting areas or so to explore
5 cities with interesting gimmicks
4 gyms and leaders with interesting gimmicks
300 Pokemon or so that I want in the game
30 or so new moves for the game

Should I just start? The big thing still missing is Lore for the region. It is pretty null.

How important would that gimmick be for you?

My game idea uses 122 "regional forms", already covers all combinations for water, and 80-90% of the combinations for rock, fire, bug, psychic and grass. There would still be room for 80 more Pokemon in the Dex as is and only 3 legendary roles are occupied. It wouldn't be that hard to change some Pokemon to add new type combinations too.

That said, I don't feel like it would be worth it to add 9 dragon families or 7 ghost families just to have EVERY type combo unless they fit naturally in my region and can be placed in my map without fucking up gym balance, which I doubt they would do.

I would like to apologize to all the gen 3 hackers I made fun of over the years. Working with AdvanceMap for the first time, I never realized it took 3,000 years to make one map that would take 10 minutes with a GSC mapper. After being able to easily plot 2x2 tree tiles in GSC style, now having to place 4 different, individual 1x1 tiles just to make one tree is the epitome of suffering.

The island of ??? was completely uninhabited until recently, but when scientists discovered its surprising biodiversity, it began attracting trainers and explorers from all over the world.

However, the small island holds some very powerful Pokemon and later on even dangerous traps from some extinct civilization as well as Pirates who once used the island as a refuge, thus access to sections of the island has been blocked off by the Pokemon Overseers who guarantee that you can't cross too far. There are usually two, three or four Overseers per area and you have to beat one in order to gain access to the next area.

Camp 1 is the laboratory where you start and pick one out of 6 starters (necessary because you have 4 rivals). You can revive fossils as level 5 Pokemon here.
Camp 2 has the breeding center and the area where you will fight the first Overseer to access the North part of the Island. The Overseer you will have to fight will use a team that is strong against your Starter. If you return later you will be able to battle the other two Overseers in a double battle.
Camp 3 is some kind of farm/plantation where scientists and trainers are studying the rare berries found on the island (Calcium and variants are found as berries in the Island because of reasons). You will also be able to leave your Pokemon to work on the farm for a while if you want, it will level up as if in the Breeding Center, but get you Rare Berries, Plates and Fossils instead of eggs. You have to face all Overseers of this area in double battles to continue because they will use types with functionalities that I will have changed for the game and I need to dump that info on the player).
Camp 4 has the Market (Mall) and the Casino (probably playing Dice). Gimmick here is going to be that Overseers will face you in a manner similar to the Alola "Elite 4", fight them one after the other in the order of your choice with no Pokecenter in-between, but you only have to beat 3 out of 4.

Camp 5 has the Safari Zone. The gimmick here is that the Overseers will be hiding in the swamp with no Pokecenters nearby and their positions will reset if you leave the area or restart the game. This will give you access to the huge cave system that will let you reach the "Elite Four". Although again, you only need to beat three out of four.
Camp 6 has the "Elite Four" and beating them will allow you to visit the Post Game.

Red Crosses are NPCs who will heal you if you talk to them. Some will also have computers nearby to let you change your team and the two in the center of the island will have a boat to take you to the other, or Camp 4 or to the initial Camp.

Look into "emu edition" hacks. As far as I know, Gen 4 and 5 games don't have hacks that simply change the wild encounters, so you'll have to deal with hacks like Flawless Platinum, Sacred Gold or Blaze Black which ramp up the difficulty as well as add other small changes.

That's pretty neato. Some people gave you shit for your maps last thread but I dig them, personally. You tend to do alot of small features and nooks that I really enjoy seeing. To me it gives it a very organic feeling and I feel you use the overworld sprites well in that sense. It almost feels like an extension of Johto. Or maybe I'm just really fond of Gen2.

So I've run into a problem with the real time clock in my hack. I don't know when this problem cropped up, but I just noticed it today. 15 seconds into every minute, the clock jumps back to the previous minute for only one second. After the second passes, the clock jumps back forward to the correct time. This doesn't throw the clock off at all and does not effect when the time rolls over to a new minute.
The only time this is even an issue is when the overworld color palette changes from day to nite to morning. 15 seconds after the transition, the game flashes back to the previous color palette for a second and then back to the correct palette.

I thought it could be something to do with wram, but the only thing I've added is a value to keep track of the player's sprite color. I replaced "wram.asm" with a clean version and the problem still persists.

Anyway, the map is always the Kanto one, implemented with the Sevii map, and works terribly (like, you exit from a Kanto route and you end up on a random Sevii location).
What I mean is that DarkRisingGirl simply renamed Kanto's locations, but the map layout itself is the same, and that's a huge flaw in my opinion.
In the third game she tried to avoid people from noticing this removing the town map both from the items and the pokecenters, but as soon as you get Fly you'll notice. Also the overworld itself is a mess.

As for the digimon, I mean actual ones from the franchise, almost 200 iirc.

I recently found Omega Paradox and this one says it has 721 dex plus fakemons and characters from Yugioh (the sprites are from the gba games for characters) and some dragons like Slifer are included also alolan forms confirmed.

There is also the beta 3 of Mind Crystal which is surprisingly well polished but in fucking french. One of the things i like They did something idk how but locked the game into 60fps (actually making fast forward look more decent) i would love this to be done on blaze black 2 because fuck grinding in that game

These all sound good except Bill's house; the so-called "secret garden" was a rumor due to a tile error, not something that would make sense for an isolated computer geek to have.

Exploring the water around Cycling Road would be cool, but remember that it' supposed to be a bridge over water (so the SS Anne can pass under), not just more land. RBY and even FRLG screwed this up. HGSS gets it right.

If you expand Cerulean Cape into its own area, you can also connect it to the Power Plant right below, with a waterfall or a cave or just a river.

The water that Cycling Road crosses corresponds to Tokyo Bay in real life. The channel crossing the bay is called Uraga Channel. There could be a lighthouse at one end and an artillery battery at the other (once manned by Lt. Surge?).

Route 7 and 16 are both tiny. Route 7 could extend north to Route 4, and Route 16 west to Route 2. Plenty of possible content to add in the grasslands or forests.

What I'm investigating is something that happens because VisualBoyAdvance is such a shitty emulator. Under certain conditions you can go out of bounds and it won't crash in VBA where it would in any other emulator or on the cartridge.

Got some questions here:

I never hacked, closest to hacking is the use of Powersaves, and I made some items 900x (all obtainable within the game, bp items and etc.- only PP Max being the main outlier) and I've cloned, but all Pokemon have legal sets, IV's, etc.

I haven't started up Game Sync ever since the game came out, so if I game sync'd, would they deem my game eventually as an altered save and ban me, even if I plan on not using Powersaves after I sync my game? Just want to get into rated battles.

Yeah Shellder and Cloyster's defense came down a bit but I boosted their HP, Atk and Sp. Atk to compensate.

1st Stage Mons all got boosted to 325, Final Stage to 525. Ninetails won't have Drought so I'm trying to think of abilities that aren't -ates. Maybe absorption?

Newbie question
I've got my region all mapped out, now I'm going town to town filling it with NPC's, scripts, and battles

I'm having difficulty with the Gym Leaders, since I want the player to be able to challenge them whenever they want.
Is there a way for the Gym Leader to check how many Badges the player has, then use a specific team to battle with? Think Pokemon Origins Brock I guess.

ROM hacking has a relatively low barrier for entry. Not as low as Essentials, but you can get a grasp on it pretty quickly if you're not relying on other team members to carry you. It's easier than it's ever been, especially with pokered, pokecrystal, and eventually pokeruby.

Look at really popular and well liked hacks. Look at Gaia, Vega, and Prism. What do these three hacks have in common? The author (or authors, in Vega's case) have made or worked on other hacks that either weren't finished, or weren't as high quality as these hacks. They've had years of experience ROM hacking before they could make something of this quality.

Yes, you can make your first hack in a few years. Will it be very good? Unless you've been playing lots of Pokemon games (be it the main series games, and hacks) and thinking critically about them: probably not. It's common to have your first project be really shitty at the start and it progressively gets better through the game since you're learning.

But that's fucking fine. There's almost no avoiding that. >>33823452 has a really good point, you could putter around with some smaller projects to get used to hacking and figure out what makes hacks fun before taking on your grand first project. Honestly though, go for it if you really want to. You'll end up redoing stuff as you go along, or figuring out that maybe your idea wasn't all that good.

Pretty much everyone is biting off more than they can chew when they start off. The hardest part of this shit is dedication and commitment. You can learn everything else, but you have to put in the effort if you want to make something special.
