http://mightandmagic.wikia.com/wiki/Nicolai_(Enroth)
>Though unbeknownst to himself, Nicolai had experienced and survived the Reckoning, arriving in the city of Drangheim, upon the world of Axeoth's continent of Rysh. Seemingly, he was unique: it appeared that all other survivors of the destruction, mainly those of Antagarich and Jadame, had ended up on the continent of Iranese.
MM9Nicolai

Nicolai attempting to raise an army against the impending Kreegan threat.

>The Saviours of Chedian encountered Nicolai a few weeks later. As natives of Axeoth, the Saviors could not understand much of Nicolai's story, having never heard of Roland Ironfist, Castle Ironfist, the Kreegans or Enroth. Passing him off as a lunatic, they nevertheless heeded to his plea for assistance in raising money to fight the devils. Securing him a job working at the Circus at the Guberland Gathering, the Saviors continued their quest to unite the Chedians and defeat the Beldonian Horde.

Mildly amusing the first time you see it, but it was their chance to integrate MM9 with Enroth and it's played off as a complete joke.

The quest is itself is actually nice. It's just a travel quest but it has a 5k payoff. You are poor in MM9 for so long. Until pick up master Elemental and can sell things and train in the black market regularly there really isn't a good way to make money.

Can i get someone to rate my strategy for 3?
Since most of the maps give you a second castle of your faction, i usually try to upgrade both castles equally. I also rush capital first(unless playing necro, in necro i rush vampires), then army, THEN upgrades. I usually end up with way bigger army than the enemies by then, but it takes a while, and sometimes makes me an easier target early on. It feels like it works better on bigger, longer maps, and worse on small ones. What strategy is good for smaller maps? Rush army as soon as possible and conquer everything as fast as i can?
>>
who r u playing against AI? It doesnt even matter what you do
>>
Well i still want to improve my gameplay
>>
>>3907214

In necro you should rush liches and let vampires collect. Also grab animate dead asap.

There is no overall best strategy to builds. Ýou have to look at how resource rich the map is, with the exception of dungeon and tower the rest of towns have resource poor and resource rich build paths. It's generally a good idea to get 5th or 6th tier units early because they won't die as fast and keep shit tier units unbought and in garrison in case you need town defences.
>>
Are there any mods that allow me to watch a replay of a game once it is over? I'm curious to see what the A.I. does during its early turns, since it seems to take them so long to expand, and frequently leaves easily accessible artifacts/resources/locations unclaimed until mid-late game, despite apparently prioritizing gibs over the fastest route of travel.

Do they wait until they have a large army to start expanding? Do they just manage their troop allocation poorly, or build too few early heroes, or what?

In these threads HoMM3 always gets the most attention. Why? What about Heroes 2? My babysitter (!) showed it to me, and I didn't understand too much, though I enjoyed the fantasy setting. Whenever I see pic related and hear the music I get chills.

Recently I revisited it for the nostalgic feels, and got pretty good. Then I went on to 3 and got my ass handed to me repeatedly.

Any good map packs for Heroes 2? Or mods?
>>

>Then I went on to 3 and got my ass handed to me repeatedly.
That's funny, I started with 2 and found 3 easier. It's harder to grind in 2 since shooters are more vulnerable, and you get less money from towns.

Fuck the Lair of the Wolf

It's fucking huge
Slimes with physical immunity
Instagibs from Greater Werewolves
Swarms of werewolves in small areas
Walls designed to make it hard to snipe/dragon breath
Infinite respawns at certain spawn points
Putting the orb and the questgiver at the absolute corners of the map where even walking between them takes several minutes
Teleporters that don't serve any purpose other than to confuse you

At least it's better than Agar's Lab and the Lair of the Dragon Riders that are huge but don't even have quests inside.
>>

Have you done castle Darkmoor yet?
>>
>>3912421
The biggest problem is the ability to walk into an area and have multiple people knocked unconscious before the enemies even show up on Wizard Eye. Even on a replay you just can't avoid a couple of those areas.

Darkmoor is a little different because that's an essential quest although the dispels are super annoying. Then there's the infamous Tomb of VARN.

>>
>>3913257
It has some appeal, but the heroes get to be ridiculous late. This becomes a major issue in the campaigns where units become optional aside from bringing a T4 along exclusively for speed. Most of the vanilla campaigns were written really well and have enough content, but the expansions were a complete waste. Winds of War basically says fuck it, throw all the heroes you made on one map and fight each other.

The XOR gimmick was retarded. It just simplifies things into a choice between getting T4 fast or having powerful units. As a result the tech trees end up feeling detached from the game. Why did they get rid of upgrades? I can't think of a single good reason.

And of course the best reason to hate HoMM4, the reckoning. You had just spent all these attempts to save the world in both M&M, AB, and arguably SoD for the creators to say LOLNOPE. When the Corak/Sheltem saga ended in MM5 they didn't immediately blow the planet up, they fulfilled the prophecy and transformed the world. XEEN is flat and the ending of WoX changes it to a spherical world. As much as we shit on Ubi, at least they didn't pretend it was the same thing. The tie-ins from the old world are loose and other than the Gavin Magnus campaign, it's always played off as a joke like >>3905984 or a vague homage.

The ability to save money and metagame to the max too when playing as Castle. If you visit Stables with cavaliers, all the Cavaliers in your army will become upgraded to Champions free of charge. If there are stables outside of your town, there's absolutely no reason to buy the upgrade.
>>
Never played might and magic, but enjoyed homm alot. Which game should i start with? I suppose the story goes chronologically?
>>
>>3913764
The pastebin goes over it but I would say Might and Magic 3 or 6. MM6 takes place in Enroth but 7 connects to 3 and MM3-5 are great games as well.
>>
>>3913764
In the pastebin, 3 or 6. For a HoMM player start at 6-8 and you can always go back and pick up 3-5.

If you are already comfortable with tile based gameplay and DoS style controls then start at 3.

The first two are really only for the dedicated at this point.
>>
>>3913384

I thought getting rid of upgrades made sense because then units are at their full power when you buy them and you won't have to waste resources and a week of game time just upgrading. You just build the dwelling and you're ready to go. Imo a lot of streamlining efforts in later games were pretty good ideas. Because they let you bypass a lot of the bullshit and get you fighting the enemy AI that much faster. Also it saved developers time not having to code in two of basically identical units along with rendering the models.

Why can't ubisoft just hire a competent dev to combine all the best ideas of every Homm game and make a streamlined 2D Homm. They could put that shit on phones and reap profits.

This might be an odd place to ask but I was wondering. What are some other turn based strategy games from around this era that aged decently well and are still playable on a modern system?

I feel like the late 90s/early 2000s era of TBS games are basically the peak of the genre, the perfect mix of complexity and UI usability. The only other game from this time period I play is Age of Wonders. Most strategy games either overkill the "strategy" part and make everything take days to complete or they have no strategy at all and you just mash stacks of units at each other until you win or lose. No other game gives me that feeling of true victory when I win.
>>
>>3916436
Warlords 3
Disciples 2
Age of Wonders Shadow Magic
>>
>>3916436
>>3916742
These are all good recommendations. Also look outside of fantasy genre (but i cannot really recommend anything for that myself).
Other games outside of this era worth looking into are King's Bounty (both original and new one have their merits) and Battle of Wesnoth (very RNG heavy)

For non fantasy I would say the original Medieval Total War is a great strategy game. Unlike later games in the series the campaign map is more strategic and the AI is more competent as well and there's a lot of neat mechanics they cut out later from the series like being able to slaughter captives mid battle in case you're losing so the enemy can't get them back or unique officers for every unit with stats and traits you can assign titles and land for them to govern. The Steam version supports widescreen but apparently has crashing issues on the campaign map that can be fixed by setting your campaign map resolution to match up with desktop resolution.
>>
>>3917206
The manual in game folder is a, pretty nicely written, story, but i can't see any explanations on the gameplay there.

Basically, what i did was, run around, accidentally buy the same item four times, accidentally remove(i think?) a party member, kill everyone else and waste money in the fountains(i played 3). I don't understand what does the game want me to do.

>>3917218
For now you need to level up. Aside from clearing stuff in and around the fist two cities the first major quest is in the dungeon outside Fountain Head, the temple of moo. Inside you will get the crusader title and can enter castles. You will need several spells such as light and levitate to navigate around without killing yourself.

I'm quite new to HoMM3 and wanted to ask if there are any hidden bonuses?
Was playing a campaign and 120 dendroid soldiers of mine were killed in like 2 rounds by black knights, but they managed to crush more than 10 bone dragons beforehand.
>>
>>3917910
Bone dragons have a debuff that permanently lowers the total HP of a stack of creatures, maybe your dendroid stack was weakened by that.
>>
>>3917663
You resurrect heroes at a temple and you know if you have enough XP to level up by highlighting their experience in the character menu. You have to go to a trainer in M&M to level up.
>>
>>3917494
Your first major goal should be to get merchant and all the traveling skills.

Swimming must be learned by all characters, although humans already know it. It is in a semi hidden room in the Fountain Head sewer.

You need two Pathfinders and two Mountaineers which can be taught to your characters in Baywatch. Then merchant is in a shack right by Fountain Head but you need 2 pathfinders to get to it. Every character with merchant sells all items for cost which doubles your vendor income.

These skills are expensive, so be prepared to spend a lot.
>>
>>3917663
If you lost someone to death your probably fucked up hard. Strongly consider reloading. What is considered game abuse in later games is perfectly normal in 3-5.

One of the earliest things that will help you is getting the first aid spell for your Paladin. Healing is almost essential.

You only really need to grind to level 3 and there is a Goblin shack outside Fountain Head that will get you most of the way by itself.

The Might and Magic series is way more open-ended than most people are used to, but the same basic rules apply. Stick near your home city until you are ready to move on. Once you can safely kill Moose Rats you should go ahead and clear out Fountain Head. Inside the sewers you will pick up a ton of miscellaneous skills including swimming. Most skills only require 1 party member learning them. The exceptions are listed >>3918095

Eventually in the sewers you will get to an area that requires a password. Now if you explored the rest of the city you would know that someone knows that password but requires his own quest being completed. The items he is looking for can be found in the sewers and the first room of the Temple of Moo.

Here is something else that might be worth mentioning. The mirrors themselves don't recognize the cities by name in MM3 but use codes. To go to Fountain Head go to any town's mirror and say home. All of the passwords are written on walls, although the password to the 5th city is not written in the city itself.

Picking up here the first major issue you will run into is around level 10, levels become exceedingly difficult to get. Every single level for the rest of the game will be just over a million experience. There are some quests that give huge amounts of experience, but you will do a lot of wandering around trying to figure out how to get quests and levels.

Mage Guilds have spells up to level 3x(City Number), Fountain Head has 1-3, Baywatch has 1-6, etc with Blistering Heights (city 5) having up to 17.

Once you learn Lloyd's Becaon you should have a way out of virtually any situation outside of castles where it's disabled. Each character that knows the spell has his/her own beacon. I would leave 1 character with the default beacon in Fountain Head as it's a 6 sp town portal almost anywhere.

As a rule if you can keep Heroism on at all times. Holy bonus and Power Shield are nice but Heroism effectively doubles you melee level in combat.

You will at some point need to get the Golden Pyramid Key, but aside from the first one which is still pretty hard, all the rest are mid to late game.

If you go to a dungeon that says it's locked and you need the key, you can note that "key" is in a different font, and that color is the color of key used to unlock the dungeon. These keys are in random caverns across the world although some hirelings may have a key you are looking for if you want a shortcut. You will eventually want to create a dummy character or two at an inn to hold keys and special items that you don't want to drag around.
>>
>>3920696
If you turn in an ancient artifact to its throne (the artifact collector, not the king) each party character of that alignment gets 500k and all others get 100k.

Any time you can turn in a power orb that will give 1M xp all each. This will be your main way of leveling until very late.

There are 31 orbs total scattered around, ideally you give 10 to all the kings then the final one to whoever you want to win the war. The instant you give a king 11 they nuke the other 2 factions' castles and issue one of the items for winning the game. Until you are ready for it, it's best to leave them around.

Also Teleport is pretty OP in a lot of places, but if I remember right it's level 10 so you won't get it until you join the guild in one of the last two cities.

I need an advice, my reputation in MM6 always sooner or later drops to negative amount after I have it at 0 or positive values. The only thing I am aware of that should negatively affect it is that I hired a duper which gives me a category down, but I thought this is a one time thing only. Is that it? Or is there more stuff that lowers reputation, like joining shady guilds, doing certain quests or accidentally walking into Baa's churches even though I never donated there?
>>
>>3925254
You can always raise your reputation back to Respectable by donating at a temple.

Yes there are plenty of quests/turnins that cause reputation drops such as cobra eggs, human bones, the baa candelabra quest in New Sorpigal, and Price Fixing for the Jewess.

Bribe/Beg/Threaten npcs also costs a small amount of reputation every time you do it.
>>
>>3925254
Also a duper is not a 1 time thing. When you fire him your reputation category will be restored. With one you can only donate to Average.
>>
>>3925287
It's worth remembering that reputation really doesn't affect much and duper/merchant is an excellent set of hirelings until you have a bunch of cash reserves and have bought most of your important spells.
>>
>>3925286
>>3925287
>You can always raise your reputation back to Respectable by donating at a temple.
>Also a duper is not a 1 time thing. When you fire him your reputation category will be restored. With one you can only donate to Average.
How many donations does this take? I always get to 0 after first donation, but once I tried donating about 30 times in a row and reputation still stayed at 0. Does the act of donating counts by itself or is it also influenced by how much that specific temple takes per donation?

>Yes there are plenty of quests/turnins that cause reputation drops such as cobra eggs, human bones, the baa candelabra quest in New Sorpigal, and Price Fixing for the Jewess.
Ahh fuck, I think we found our main culprit. I've sold those bones to that woman couple time salready, about 11 I would guess. As well as did some of those quests.

>Bribe/Beg/Threaten npcs also costs a small amount of reputation every time you do it.
I know about these options and never done them so far.

>>3925293
Isn't the best possible reputation required to be master at light magic? That's really the only reason why I care about it, if that's not true, then I can stop worrying.

Anyway, thank you both for the answers.

Pretty sure that's the same guy that in Heroes VI. Liches are immortal.

>hes referenced constantly
As a background character. I think Markal's backstory implies the Holy Griffin Empire killed him.

>its been 10 years and they haven't progressed the storyline
I doubt they will. They moved backwards in time, probably because they didn't want to actually explore such a deep change to the status quo and were enamored with their own setting that they thought exploring the backstory of the faction was the best thing to do.

And with how Heroes VII shit the bed, I doubt we'll see any more continuation of the series or of Dark Messiah.
>>
>>3925318
For reputation, you can only donate to Respectable. If you have a duper around that he takes that Respectable and brings it back down to average. If you have one you can't donate beyond average (0).

As for raising your reputation category it's generally a pain in the ass to do. The easiest way is every council quest aside from Price Fixing will raise your reputation by a full category. Quests will give you somewhat of a boost. Want something easy? Do the End Winter Quest or the Prince of Thieves Quest.

You need Saintly for Light Master, but you will also need Notorious for Dark Master. Take care of Dark Master first as it's a lot easier to lower reputation than raise it.
>>
>>3925593
Also don't start lowering your reputation randomly for Dark Master. Just play like normal until you are ready to pick it up. Then start murdering peasants somewhere (or Armageddon if you are lazy), pick up Dark Master, donate back up to Respectable (or in your case Average) and then continue as normal.
>>
>>3925593
>>3925606
I personally feel it's best to save a handful of +rep quests until you're ready to go for Master Light, do them and get Master Light, then go nuke a couple towns.
That way you don't have to worry about accidently completing a -rep quest and ruining your chances at Master Light.
>>
>>3926093
It doesn't really matter in the end though. When you expose Sulman (the traitor) that alone gives you like 4 rep categories by itself which is the best time to get master.
>>
Shrapmetal is so OP you don't even need Dark mastery.

>>

Shields are only used by 1 class anyway.

The miscellaneous vendor you should be aiming for of dark magic rings and such.

The lack of bows are annoying but you can already buy Stellar in White Cap.
>>
>>3914757
GOOD SHOW!
>>
>>3928796
I already got stellars on everybody, but not every one of them have good enchantments. The staff isn't really necessary, but I'd still like it for some nice enchantment for my mage. Cleric needs a both better shield and better enchantment.

How does the "of ... magic" thing work? Do they stack and is it good idea to fill every ring/amulet slot with them?
>>
>>3928782
Also, I just had a thought, maybe he gives shields, staves and bows for the kegs instead.
>>
>>3928808
It's a little under a plus 50% bonus of your skill. Say you have 12 master, with a ring it ends up around the same effect as if you cast with 17 master. Artifacts of x magic are closer to 60%. I don't remember the exact numbers in 6 but you could check it with Lloyd's Beacon and a water magic ring.

Of x magic rings stack but with diminishing returns about half to a third strength.
>>
>>3928881
Also they work differently in 7 and 8. Then it's half your skills level bonus rounded down, but they do not stack.
>>
>>3928808
Your sorcerer should be using daggers anyway because that allows you 2 enchants instead of 1, plus the daggers are way faster.

Since the rings don't fully stack having more than 2 of any kind is mostly useless, but for a sorcerer having rings of Water/Air/Light/Dark would be useful, or a Cleric with Body/Body/Light/Dark and there go most of your ring slots.

Since stats don't scale for shit, what else are you putting in there? Maybe condition protection (Sanity/Medusa/Alarms) or hp/sp regen would be fine, but ultimately there aren't too many useful options.

Why does it seem like HOMM is so much more popular than Might and Magic? Or is it just me?
>>
>>3929827
Because people used to like strategy games and the general idea was that RPGs didn't sell until Diablo and BG came out while M&M was still oldschool style. Nowadays MMX sold more than HoMM7 and RPGs are big sellers again.
>>
>>3929827
At this point a large part of it is how HoMM had virtual cult status in Russia when it came out.

Most of the remaining fanbase of the original M&M moved on, but there are a lot of Eastern Europeans and Russians that are still big on the series.

how is MMX anyway?
>>
>>3930876
I've heard mixed things. Some people say its less open but has a good combat system while others say it's tedious as fuck. I'll try it eventually.
>>
>>3931253
It's way less open. Basically the game is broken into chapters and you have to finish the essential quest chain to unlock the next one. The combat is fine, but you do need to do a lot more planning with stat point allocation.

It's not a bad game ultimately and it's worth trying out if you want some nice tiled turn based rpg gameplay.

Because the game is so damn linear the replay value is almost zero though. You come across the elemental lords and there's some mild attempt to link the ashan dragons with the Might and Magic realm, but the writing and story are both pretty weak.

Also fuck the downloadable content, they strip you of all your items and then set a third of the entire dungeon as instawipes.

It's not really a Might and Magic game, it's a game that has might and magic.
>>
>>3931547

>>
>>3932186
Grimrock is a realtime Dungeon Master clone MMX isn't all that similar.
>>
>>3932653

>>
>>3932786
you never do the old combat mambo in might and magic
that's strictly a dungeon master/eotb thing
>>
I don't think it stacks beyond two of them. I got sorcerer who's wearing Morgan (the obelisk quest amulet that adds bonus to elemental magic) and two "of water magic" rings. Tried Lloyd's beacon, wearing the amulet and 1 ring makes it 189 days, adding the 2nd ring to that still makes it only 189 days. So either Lloyd's beacon has a limit or the 3rd item has no effect anymore.

So, I'm playing through HoMM V again after getting burnt out by IV.
And while the game feels in general not nearly as crisp as III did, I do appreciate the skill system a lot and how they figured out hero participating in combat.
Still, initiative system sucks, town screen sucks and some of the abilities are just ridiculous. I really dont like that every unit had to be a special snowflake.
>>
>>3934326
town levels were a mistake
>>
>>3934326
You can do everything you need in town in a couple seconds thanks to hotkeys. How are they anything but perfect?
>>
>>3934326
The initiative system was dumb. There was no real need to create a new category. The effect is that morale boosts became only half as important which biases player choices toward the luck skill heavily.

Skill wheel was really neat though.
>>
>>3935782
Well, to start off with, it's ugly (no the town itself, mind you). Also unnecessarily obscures development in default mode AND even if you tell it to just show everything, it's much less clear than in previous parts what you can and what you cannot build.
>>3935796
I'm not even that bummed that speed and initiative was split. And changes to morale, Im actually kind of glad, even if numeric values could be changed. Its just the whole system introduces so much more bloat and makes good planning so much harder for very little gain.

Morale bonus can trigger twice as often in HoMM5 compared to HoMM3, and there are effects other than the stat itself that can further affect ATB movements. With maxed morale, It is twice as consistent with the same basic effect, in addition to having other uses, like resetting the unit's counterattack each time its turn comes.

>>3936096
It shows what can and can't be built rather clearly. Compare it to both HoMM3 and HoMM4 town halls, that are barely possible to navigate until you learn the exact build order of each town by heart, from experience or an external source.

Nah, it is much less clear even in this case, although what i was referring to were the unavalible buildings.

>I really dont like that every unit had to be a special snowflake
Well, thats what I loved about it. Especially when you start combining their abilities with spells and skillwheel talents. Like Findans light magic that reduces the mana cost of spells for you units to half. Druids become monsters with especially early.
Or with Dwarves having fire resistance on most of their units or by trying your luck and applying spell resistance runes you can create a very fun Armageddon build and lineup.

Make sure to check out the skillwheel or you'll be confused with how to build your character
http://www.celestialheavens.com/viewpage.php?id=520

The racial abilities like pic related, gating and others were a nice touch as well. Also make sure you're playing the final TOTE version 3.1. If you're going for the campaigns though I think there was a way to combine them all in TOTE so you don't miss out on caravans, new units etc.

I think there should be an emphasis somewhere in the MM6 tips of just how important Water Magic master is and maybe some suggested skill point builds for standard comps.

In the MM6-8 tips (line 118) you should probably add that a merchant/duper will be very useful on the initial buying of bows and skills and may leave money over for other skills or body magic spells.

For spells: Mystic/Spell Master

You don't always have those 50 spell points.

Dagger only takes 9 skill points to start massively outdamaging staves all game long and that's BEFORE you factor in recovery speed. It's a worthwhile investment only behind Water Master in terms of priority.

and they do quite a bit of damage plus you are already guaranteed 1 artifact dagger which should keep your sorcerer up when he needs some hp.

So, /vr/, a question that I probably never saw pop up before, which is actually pretty weird now that i think about it
H IV-style daily creature growth or vanilla, per week growth?
>>
>>3955595
Yes, other than the obnoxious attempts at voice acting which they are terrible at. The actual game is a lot of fun and gave a feeling like playing MM6 for the first time again. The mod maker even wrote a guide for it in the last year or so, but you won't really need it.

A couple things:
1) Don't bother getting Dark Magic past expert, the trainer for master is activated by an essential quest late in the game and he instantly resets whatever your skill to 11, whether you are expert 4 or expert 30.

2) Stick with the standard PACS comp. Blasters can only be learned by melee classes, and there are only 2 of them which are dropped in the final dungeon.

Part 2 is pretty fucking stupid though. If you want a quick guide on it ask when you get there and I tell show you how to cheese it and finish in less than half an hour.
>>
>>3955943
per week makes the game feel more strategic and makes battles feel a lot more important
>>
>>3955943
Per week because of how hard it is to recover after a loss. If you can pick up a top tier unit the instant you lose weekly your army you can continue to clear parts of the map. If you get attacked on Day 3 and lose, you have to be more creative.
>>
>>3956308
>>3956323
I feel like per week does introduce an additional layer of complexity and rewards skilled players more, especially during w1, where going all creatures is optimal but requires you to abuse your starting location a lot.
It does however contribute to imbalance a bit in favour of first player.

Yeah v-m is definitely dragging it out at this point. Someone put together a decent spawn patch for MM8 with some rebalancing and difficulty increases. It only adds one quest, so it's not really a full mod though.

Well in hw ruleset its usually Necromancy Amplifier are banned and Necromancy specialists are severely gimped. That makes it -somehow- manageable, but still top tier nontheless.

Never tried this NPC before. Looks pretty useful considering how much of a pain it is to recast haste every hour or so.

In vanilla MM7 the Fallen Wizard buff only lasts 2 hours which makes them useless.
>>
>>3962234
>6 hour PoH

Does Haste also last for 6 hours?
>>
>>3962249
No it's useless. Stoneskin, Bless, Heroism, and Shield are all 6 hours. Haste is 2 hours.

If haste were 6 hours then that would be a really nice NPC at only 25%.
>>
>>3962395
So much potential, but without the 6 hour haste there are usually better options. Might be useful for a melee heavy party, but then you still have to dispel the annoying weakness debuff at the end.
>>
>>3960871
Nope, not at all.

I'm playing 7 right after 6 and it's boring me. I've cleared out the barrows. Where should I go next to bring back the snap?

And more concretely, how can I open a chest? My knight is the only person who can learn disarm and she blows up every time I touch a chest.

It might be that the game isn't good, it might be that I'm trying to play it as MM 6.1. If so, I'd appreciate a nudge.
>>
>>3962526
I know that feel all too well anon. It made me take a break from MM7 and now I have to restart because I forgot what I was doing.
>>
>>3962526
>I'm playing 7 right after 6 and it's boring me. I've cleared out the barrows. Where should I go next to bring back the snap?
You need to get your Sorcerer and Cleric promoted. The Wizard quest is a large fetch style quest from 5 different areas to build your own golem which you put in your castle. When you finish you can get master for Fly and Town Portal which make the game a lot better. The Priest quest is in a dungeon right next to one of the golem pieces you pick up for the Sorcerer quest.

The major lore doesn't really take off until the essential quest gets rolling. The dwarf rescue is a fun quest. The upper level is all oozes which are physical immune. The lower level is just medusa which are magic immune but have nasty status effects (Paralysis and Stone). Protection from Magic will protect you from the effects, but it takes master body.

>And more concretely, how can I open a chest? My knight is the only person who can learn disarm and she blows up every time I touch a chest.
You don't actually need to worry about it. Chests are mostly a joke if you have Regeneration on (expert body). The only ones that actually hurt are the ones in the Haunted Mansion and that's just because there are so many back to back. If it bothers you, pick up a +disarm skill ring. You can get up to +17 by savescumming the miscellaneous shops in Deyja or Bracada. Alternatively you can learn Telekinesis with Master Earth magic.
>>
>>3962814
Should add that you don't even need to go downstairs for the dwarves. The Archer promotion to sabotage the lift does take you down there though.
>>
>>3962526
If you haven't, get the Arcomage deck for hours of mindless fun.
>>
>>3961063
Let me know if you find it, I have had trouble trying to figure it out
>>
In MM7, does going to Eofol early in the game cause issues? I just cleared out the tunnels and when I entered, I got the blaster and message from Archibald. I wanna go there for the obelisk and arcomage win, in case there's a tavern. I barely started the main quest, the last thing I did was get my castle fixed and nothing else after that.
>>
>>3961341
I think Necropolis was nerfed in WoG. Probably similar nerfs would be needed.
>>
>>3963265
No, as long as you don't use the well. There isn't a tavern, but there is an obelisk.

If you do go, make sure to use the shrine to get out, because then there is an instant portal to Eeofol in Harmondale for the rest of the game.
>>
>>3963508
Nice, thanks for the answer.
>>
>>3963090
Arcomage is pretty much the best part of MM7.
>>
>>3964739
It's the best part of MM8 and they even add more cards.

>>3963891
You can use the well at any time, but it completely breaks the game. When used correctly it's infinite skill points for all characters. There is a ton of nice loot just sitting around in Eeofol, but in terms of people the only thing is the GM armsmaster trainer. Since you were looking for the obelisks early I should warn you that you won't be able to reach 2 of them until mid to late game. Once you make The Choice, The Pit and Celeste open up but you are blocked from entry before then. The same thing blocks completion of the Arcomage quest until then.
>>
Would MM8 be better if it had stayed as an expansion to MM7?
>>
>>3966430
Well it depends. If all it did was move up the timeframe for the reckoning then I'm glad we got mostly another full game. Anything else in Axeoth would have been shit.
>>
Can anyone here tell me what happened to Heroes VII? I tried it on release, and it looked like shit, and was so buggy that made it nearly uplayable.

Did Ubi forced them to make the game for 1/4 of the budget of V and VI? Did they have a year to create it? VI was meh, but at least it didn't feel like an alpha build.
>>
>>3911089
IMO, HoMM2 kicks the shit out of HoMM3 stylistically, but HoMM3 is technically a better game.

>>
>>3967165
Well it helps that HoMM3 is basically 2 with more stuff but I think there's enough differences that make 2 worth going back to.
>>
>>3966997
Probably something along those lines, M&M "franchise" has been going downhill after first batch of Ubi games quite a lot so they are probably looking for an excuse to axe it, and sales figures of H VII looks like quite a valid reason.

HoMM V is regarded as a good game overall - very similar to III, has some strong points, but is often criticised for being too slow. Also suffers from >Ashan
H VI and H VII do not exist for the most part. VI was a humongous bludner upon release (pretty much an incomplete game) and although there are some people claiming its passable after a fuckton patches, its mostly ignored.
H VII is just bad.

god FUCKING DAMNIT

at least tactics has some use though I don't want it at all, but actually every single one of my games in the past two weeks my games' main heroes have been forced to pick shit secondaries that I don't want. This is actually the first time it has been one as good as tactics, and normally I wouldn't be too annoyed by it but all I want is my casterfu to not go from 8/10 to 2/10.An entire 2 weeks (real life, not 14 turns...) of mysticism and its crapskill cronies giving me builds uglier than haircuts black people post humorously on twitter.

And my maps have not given me the tools for avoiding this (good witch huts, universities, capturing confluxes, etc). A number of the games from these weeks I've tried to variously savescum and spend 10+ turns avoiding fights to avoid levelling up while looking for a decent witch hut to save me but to no avail.

I'm seriously thinking of modding my game to change skill chances for all classes. Basically, fix things so only 0 or 1 (out of 112 or whatever it is) chance to offer resistance, luck, leadership, artillery, first aid, learning, eagle eye, mysticism. Maybe also mod chance of estates/diplomacy/fire magic/pathfinding/scholar/tactics, but probably not as those all have their nonsuck uses. Almost modded it last week but decided to persevere, but gah this crap is stupid.

Do you always prioritise getting expert rather than taking new skills? You'll get less choices like this if you always take an acceptable basic skill when it's offered (you'll be worse without an expert magic early on though, but since you're against AI it doesn't really matter)

Even if you do that though, looking at what skills witches get you're actually just never going to get a full set of 8 skills you want unless you're very very very lucky.
>>
>>3970181
Not that I've used one since the first time I played, but dragons don't seem that strong compared to other classes.

>>
>>3970228
You aren't using the first two right then. You get Fly, AoE fireball, and unresistable attacks basically the instant you walk off the boat from Dagger Wound. Just do the Dragonbane Flower quests and you can train the dragon to level 7 immediately.

>>
>>3970262

>>
>>3970181
Meh, it goes both ways really, you can ignore those if you think the game is too easy, you can make mm8 the easiest of the three or the hardest. It gives you a choice, unlike the previous ones, you can adapt this one to basically any skill ceiling you desire, you want higher challenge? Refreain from using cleric/sorcerer/dragon, etc. Higher? Play with only 1-2 party members, etc. The only downside compared to the previous ones is the lack of creatures doing insta death/eradicate.
>>
>>3970259
Why would you even do quests for it, just get Ravenshore and Garrote Gorge horseshoes and you'll have Fly without leveling up Ithilgore.
>>
>>3970196
I always prioritize taking good new skills over increasing an old one, I've just been constantly offered steaming garbage and so my skills are at expert
>>
>>3970307
Can you think of any crazy hard restrictions?

MM8 is my favourite game so I go back to it often, but I've beaten the game solo with every class and struggle to find a new challenge to attempt.
>>
>>3970310
Because you save horseshoes for your main. Dragonbane Flower quests are just basic fetch quests with zero combat.

After ID and Learning what else do you even get with Dragon skill points? When I run with Ithiligore he usually ends up with level 40 dragon because there just aren't enough skills for him to use.
>>
>>3970392
There are some fun saves on portailsmm.com/comm/downloads.html for hard restrictions

>Peasant Power
>If you think you can do it, here an event more extreme for of playing the game. A whole set of peasants that will help you to save the world. All the characters start at level 0 (Peasants), they didn't even become a hero (Level 1). Like for the previous section all the 49 NPC of the Adventure's Inn starts at level 0.

I believe combining Peasant Power with this mod >>3959454 can be the hardest challenge you can put yourself in MM8.
>>
>>3970495
>Like for the previous section all the 49 NPC of the Adventure's Inn starts at level 0.

Forgot to mention that yes, even the broken things like finding Cauri early will make her be at level 0 instead of level 50 so you can't cheese the playthrough, the only downside is that every NPC is at the Inn already but you can simply choose to not get them.
>>
>>3970362

>>
>>3970851
but it's such a pain in the ass to push out invaders without loads of mana and movement shenanigans spells

meticulously setting up hero chains is my least favorite part of gameplay
>>
>>3970987
Well, movement spells -are- good, that is why earth/air magic and wisdom (unless you think your lack for books/blue hat in topes is good) is considered core too. But other than that, there really isnt that much to get in magic respect in usual scenarios - mana regen/ mana pool skills are largely uneeded (arties and wells do that well enough), fire/water magic have uses mostly for challenge maps, scholar and eagle eye sucks balls, sorcery is just middling.
>>
>>3970962
But Dungeon cities don't teach Light cities. Just get

>>
>>
>>3971916

>waiting for HoTA 1.5
>>
>>3971014
sorcery can be nice but it's so much less flexible and lategame-oriented than intelligence. DDoor, summon elementals, blind/ressurection spam, town portal, etc all take a lot of mana and I like how the right caster builds reach a point where they can take most fights with zero losses. Might heroes always suffer attrition because even with earth/air they rarely have the spellpoints to burn
>>
also the intelligence skill goes to 30% at expert while sorcery only goes to 15%, so intelligence specialty gives twice as much as sorcery specialty...assuming of course the fight goes long enough for you to spend those extra spellpoints

Have you guys played M&M X: Legacy? How awful is it?
>>
>>3970962
That mission is hell, probably like second hardest one in the whole game. You either restart the previous missions to build your hero better(Aiming for summoning magic mainly also warlocks luck and so on) or just reduce the difficulty.
The issue here that I had was that my destruction couldn't kill the bloated heroes fast enough. I had enough mana but just my hitpoints(basically count your army as nothing more than hp/meat shields) couldn't hold up.
I heard some people also succeded with expert logistics and running around capturing towns then leaving it immediately for the next town slowly scrapping together an army while the ai chases you recapturing them, but well never tried it.

Make sure you have all the essential stuff like warlocks luck in your build.
>>
>>3973453
Yeah, Im currently aiming for luck + empowered spells, also trying to fish for ressurection from tope. Still, 18 levels is actually not that much to get all the essential stuff. Either way, my last built was shit (I took all 3 destruction magic enhancers).
And frankly im not that sold on the idea of going logistic, mainly because on that mission you have 2 heroes that you cannot lose to worry about.
>>
>>3973385
see
>>3931547
Except that should be skill point allocation, not stat point. Going from 12 to 13 is the same cost as going from 0 to 1.
>>
>>3970962
>>3973640
What you roughly need for the 3rd Dungeon map are these:
>Empowered Meteor Shower
With a lucky empowered crit you can literally wipe out the largest of stacks.
>Expert Luck, Warlocks Luck and empowered spells
Obviously
>Enlightenment
Now this is really worth it if you can afford it after the above. Huge boost to your spellpower and mana pool.
>Light magic/Resurrection
No offense to other anons but for this specific map resurrection is much better if you can get it. Summoning won't really help you there and it's not worth investing in.
Also keep and eye out for artifacts such as 50% fire/earth damage increase etc if you manage to buy them from the artifact merchant.
>>
>>3973801
Yeah, that is my rough plan at the moment. Getting res might be tricky (basically I have to get lucky at the tope i guess?) and if i cannot get enlightment, ill jest settle on sorcery.
>>
>>3973817
You have to get lucky with the light magic and then Resurrection from the dragon utopia or mage vault in mission 2 as far as I remember. Your other hero can also learn puppet there if she has expert dark. Yes sorcery is definitely a must now that I think about it, been years since I last played H5
>>
>>3973850
I already got lucky with light magic, i rolled for it in m1. Now I basically have 8 levels to learn 6 essential skills (to get empowered + lucky spell and expert light) and 2 more possibly for sorc till i hit the cap.
>>
>>3973868
That's good, now if you can just learn all the necessary stuff like empowered spells, Destruction,luck/warlocks luck, sorc etc and also learn Resurrection in M2 you should have it in the bag hopefully, just keep multiple saves just in case if you'll need to change your build

I am replaying MM8 after a very long time and I noticed one thing different from the previous two games. Did they seriously make it that buffing your stats doesn't count towards the master/grandmaster requirements?
>>
>>3976140
They have to be your "permanent" stats. It's the same way in 7 and I'm pretty sure the same in 6.

In MM8 it can get messier because you have characters over 50 years old which affect your base Endurance.
>>
>>3976148
It's 100% not like that in MM7, my cleric is master at learning with 23 intellect only, while the teacher still requires 50. And I am pretty sure it worked the same way in MM6 too.

I am just gonna try finding some tool to edit saves and raise the attributes to the required point and then lower them back to original value once I've learned the rank.

First scenario is easier as Necro as well because you get to Bone Dragons so fast. Other than that yes, Sorcerer is the way to go. Not only do they have Dragons, but the Dungeon is incredibly useful. In HoMM2 gold is at a major premium and you get 1750/day from them.
>>
>>3976367
Ah, we are talking about different things. I'd have to check the next time I start MM8 to see if you are right on stat modifying equipment.

I almost never bother with Learning in MM8 aside from Lich/Dragon because Clerics have better things to get up in. Their promotion is super early so getting GM body seems like a top priority and Master Light is really easy.

The other part is that the experience gain isn't all that big. There are enough quests for experience that you are never short, culminating in the master bounty hunter with 1.2 million just by itself.

Is there anything to make HoMM 4 look better? Any mods at all? This is probably the worst looking one in the series currently, also the world view window is so small.

The main mod for H4 is Equilibris. I haven't bothered with it personally, so I have no idea if it adds anything graphically.

Training takes time, the more time it passes the lower score you get in the end, Horseshoes means as soon as you get Ithilgore you can get flying with no time downside, besides, if you're going to play with a Dragon in your party, it might as well be considered a Main character as well, so your "you save horseshoes for your main" argument makes no sense whatsoever.
>>
>>3982324
If you are worried about maximizing final score you are either running Lich solo or Lich Dragon duo. It doesn't matter whether you train early game or late game. It's 8 days per level either way regardless of when or how many characters train.

The point is just about any other class will have more things to go up in and can use the horseshoes more effectively. Since you might as well do the Dragonbane Flower quest immediately anyway, it makes more sense to pick up the levels for Dragon Master while there. Presumably you will also get enough for Sword Master, Armsmaster Expert, and Body Master with your other characters.
>>
>>3982449
>Body
To clarify I mean Body Magic, not Body Building. You probably won't have the endurance for BB yet and it's not a top priority anyway.
>>
>>3976562
Ok, I got to that point and can confirm. Equipment gear that boosts stats does count toward the 50 requirement in MM8. Spells that boost stats do not count toward that requirement. Spell buffs do work for the skill point torch challenges though.

Is 9 that bad? I have the entire series (which I've never played) except 9 and 10. I have played Heroes 1-4, though.
>>
>>3984996
It's not good but it's not the clusterfuck that it was at release. With the TELP patches (which are included in the gog version) it's playable. The problems are still mostly that it wasn't released as a fully polished game.

The lore is garbage compared to any other game in the series and almost completely breaks from anything Might and Magic. Nothing about the Ancients/Elementals/Pyramids and they go for closer to a Norse mythology.

Most of the series defining spells (Fly, Invisibility, Power Cure, etc) are gone or drastically changed. Spell guilds are normalized from 9 schools to 4. Promotions are revamped and no one gets master of any skills until the character gets their second promotion.
>>
I have started at HoMM III and once it was released, IV. Switching between the two because they feel like different games so i don't get bored. Is there any reason i should go back to I/II or up to V/VI/VII other than visuals/story?
>>
>>3985273
V is actually worth playing, there are some improvements, although for someone who played mainly III it can feel really sluggish. Dont even bother with VI and VII.
Opinions about II are very divided - as someone who started with III I could never get into II besides playing through campaigns.
>>
>>3985357
I like having two possible upgrades, hero skills are neat too. Kinda like mix of III and IV(or seems like one). Will probably give it a shot.
>>
>>3985391
Alternate upgrades are a mixed bag - the idea itself is quite neat, but realization could use some work in a lot of cases. For example, in case of Haven both upgrades are (usually) viable and theyu also work in terms of flavour.
>>
In HoMM5, do Arcane Training and Erratic Mana interact somehow? Like if EM fires while I have AT, do I get an up 70% mana cost reduction?
>>
>>3986416
I'm pretty sure it's done by priority.

The Arcane Training makes it 80% of cost and Erratic Mana takes that up to half and cuts it to a possible 40%. Note that the Erratic Mana says "up to" not a flat 50%.
>>
>>3984996
it's more disappointing than bad

Anons, I'm stuck in the penultimate scenario of the Terror of the Seas HotA campaign. The one where Bidley is isolated in the underground maze. I've gotten to near the end, past where Dargem dispels the illusion. I gave my Sea Capns Hat to the quest guard and went through the portal, but the other side is a dead end for me. Is Bidley supposed to have Summon Boat there? I never picked it up in previous scenarios despite visiting almost a dozen towns' mage guilds. Am I stuck? Please don't tell me the Pandora's Box with 2000 haspids has the Horn because that's patently impossible to beat. Wat do, anons? Am I boned?

My friends and I are getting into HoMM3. Is there anything that we should do beforehand to enhance the experience of the game or the balance it out before we get too committed? Also does Hamachi work decently for playing online?

I think I have the complete version.
>>
>>3994637
Download Heroes 3 HD patch and launcher. It's absolutely free and offers more significant improvements than the ubishit "release". It is playable through pretty much anything, even direct connect TCP/IP provided you did the port forwarding, so Hamachi might not even be needed.
>>
>>3994637
What >>3994773 said, though some people will recommend gameranger over hamachi.
You could also consider HotA - it's a mixed bag, but also introduces sim turns feature, which does make the game go on much faster.
Or just play multiplayer heroes The Only Proper Way there is - hotseat.

yes but you could argue the 3DO acquisition was the beginning of the end
>>

You can make a solid argument for WoX because of the integration of the two games, 6 for having "3D" gameplay in an era with tons of godawful attempts at 3D plus its sheer size, or 7 for the dual path game and integration with HoMM 3 and MM3.

I'd probably lean toward WoX although 7 is close.

Player 1 cant siege day 1. No using DD or fly to skip guards to grease the items they're suppose to protect.

Many players ban towns (flux/necro), spells (DD/fly), skills (diplo), and even some locations (cartographer and others).
>>
>>4000160
Is there no way to balance or couner flux/necro? It seems like a huge waste to deny two interesting factions.
>>
>>3996520

Spells m8

Learn the power of slow, clone, haste, prayer, berserk, armageddon, town portal and blind.
>>
>>3970962
Finally managed to muscle through it, complete with warlocks luck, Resurrection and empowered spells. Opted for enlightment over sorcery.
AI had a stroke and decided to flee from 75% would-be hard battles after exchaning a single round of spells, later sending their buffed heroes to die as scouts. Kind of anticlimactic desu.
>>
>>4000320
>necro
Play FFA on an open S/M/heck, even L map. Most open maps suffice. Most maps are divided into big hubs for every player with a resource/artifact hotspot in the middle, protected by powerful monsters, and whoever breaks through first, wins. In that environment, Necro can build up fast, and any MP player worth his salt can critical-mass his skeletons in 3 weeks.

If you go open, Necro simply can't do that. And, interestingly, magic heroes get better, because Spell Power 3+ Magic Arrow week 1 is really strong.

Granted, tiny maps like this run into their own problems, but hey, here's a bandaid. Hope you enjoy level 1 creature specialists, Solmyr and Ciele.

Some Russian leagues also allow Necropolis but without Skeleton Transformer and Necro Amplifier.

>flux
Same as above, except Flux has a better early game with Ciele around. Endless Sprite abuse works against dumb AI, but a single Magic Arrow plasters them to oblivion. Dead tier 4-5 is also not too great when peeps are running Rocs/Wyverns week 1.

Flux is also the worst town in Single Player because long, mini-campaign maps like Unleashing the Bloodthirsty or Lord of War force you to use the "Blind last enemy, Resurrect your whole army" approach, and most of Conflux's army is not ressurectable.
>>
>>4000320
My friends allow all spells/towns when we play. They're imbalanced but honeslty it's not that bad unless you're playing galthran on an XXXL map and don't meet him until the 3rd month and he has 5000 skeletons with higher attack and defence than your best unit
>>
>>4000343
Are the spells predetermined of each city in camapign?
>>
>>4001214

Nop, make sure to get at least advanced wisdom and earth magic also learn all the spells early on in the campaigns. The first maps are usually easy, even though you're limited to level 10. Having secondary scholar heroes really helps. You have a good chance of getting town portal pretty early unless the the mage guilds are limited to lvl 3.

Some campaigns have town portal, berserk, armageddon, fly and dimension door disabled for obvious reasons.

It really depends on the faction which magic schools to focus on first though.

If it's rampart, castle and fortress then focusing on earth and water is beneficial as fuck. Teleport and clone are incredibly strategic spells that will save you a ton of troops, especially during sieges. So is slow, resurrect and meteor shower, the later two are very dependent on spell power though, otherwise you'll waste lots of mana.

If you're playing necropolis, dungeon or inferno then fire magic should be your priority, berserk and armageddon have a good chance of appearing there. Earth magic is also always good, especially for necromancers who all specialise in earth magic spells, you'll be casting animate dead most of the time with them though. Water and air magic are kind of a waste on these factions. Unless you really want haste. Or teleporting a huge stack of skellies.

Tower has a high chance of air spells but imo chain lightning, counter strike and haste aren't worth the school. Like mentioned fly and dimension door are disabled a lot of the time due to obviously bypassing the map design. The only ones to really benefit from air magic are barbarians, but even they are better off with
Slowing the enemy with earth rather than hasting for first strike. Barbarians really have a shitty time at sieges so earthquake and ballistics is a must, cyclopes are ofte not worth the effort.

It's the "blazing archipelago" scenario in HoTA. If you plan on playing it I recommend first going into the map editor and moving the red player's shipyard slightly. By default the shipyard spawns ships in an unreachable position so you have to summon boat every time which is too stupid to have been intentional.

>>4005552
Overgearing isn't a bad idea but the place is simple even at reasonably low levels.

1) Get the keys to show what the links are in the barrows BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE. All of the barrows that link to the outside have a key somewhere inside them. These barrows that have keys are also connected.

2) Most of the barrows are a waste of time but have some really nice gold.

3) The only quests are in 2 (lantern of light) and the ankh (initiate promotion and later on Arch Druid promotion).

4) When fighting kill the revenants and ghouls first. They have paralyze which will fuck you up if you don't have protection from magic yet (master body).

5) Keep regeneration on at all times as always, but there are also tons of healing potions around as you clear the barrows. Use them.
>>
>>4005865
Also if you haven't the first thing you do in the zone is go to Stone City, donate at the temple 5 times, and clear out the damn troglodytes. The quest gives a ridiculous amount of reputation. You can now sell for roughly 75% with just expert merchant and with a hireling you can sell at cost.
>>
>>4005879
I cleaned out the trogs by luring them to the elevator, fighting until nearly dead, then hitting the switch and going up to the temple. Repeat.

That's by design, but it's still cheesy. There are so many of the little monsters down there that it's basically designed as an escape for when you are overwhelmed.

Then again it's not like the little bastards could see what you were doing.
>>
I've been thinking how the homm series boils down to one super hero rolling over the opponent and I think the game needs a supply system.
A system where each hero gets a certain supply number which decreases each turn for every troop under their control and once it hits 0 they lose troops until they reach a town to regain their supply.
This sort of system would punish players who put their entire army on one hero or who camp a hero on a ship next to the opponent's castle or players who try to grab up every resource pile and artifact on the map as fast as possible.
It would also reward players for using small groups of high level/upgraded troops instead of abusing the starting armies of heroes to rush with armies of level 1/2. It would mean each combat encounter is more tactical, necromancers wouldn't be able to snowball and neutral ai wouldn't be a joke just a couple weeks in.
>>
>>4009368
The main problem is one hero can cover too much ground so you don't really have a need to have others beyond scouts. HoMM5 had an interesting way around it with mentoring, but even then you still had one main. You just didn't have all the rest as complete garbage like they usually are in 3.

If you want to make it require more than one main hero put obstacles that incentivize having more than one hero. Add more choke points and put them a long way from each other. Banning logistics on a lot of maps might help, but the outcry wouldn't make it feasible.
>>
>>4009591
If online matches are of any indication, it results in having 1 main hero and a couple of valuable sidekicks, with the rest being just a method to transport shit and useful in maxing out MPs on the main.
>>
>>4009368

Nah it just needs a level cap on heroes and how much attack/defence/power/knowledge a hero can attain. As it is you get overpowered turbo fast, especially with OP artifacts. That way you'll need to train several heroes.
