The Shigeru Miyamoto Donkey Kong Country quote is something that has been passed around for ages, but I have never actually seen a source for it. I also recall Miyamoto himself saying in 2010 that he never said that because he worked closely with the production of DKC and wouldn't have talked trash on a colleague.

So where the hell does this quote even come from?
>>
He wasn't wrong. The level design and controls in the DKC games are nothing to write home about.
>>
>>4385860
9gag
>>
It was invented in some book. Miyamoto actually supervised each stage of DKC and each peace of art had to be approved by him.
>>
I don't discard the possibility Miyamoto might have thought DKC looked like style over substance western cancer, but it sounds really out of character and unprofessional for him to say it out loud during an interview in front of Chris Stamper no less.
>>
He was super butthurt about Rare becoming the big dogs of Nintendo games
>>
>>4385875
I think, if this quote was real in any form, then it was grossly mistranslated by whoever published it.
>>
>>4385860
it was probably just some nobody who made it up, gamers will accept any rumor as fact really

This is an actual advertisement for DKC. Just read it. It doesn't take a psychologist to pick up on the subtext in hindsight.
>>
>>4385916
Did you know

Your mother is a fucking whore?
>>
Donkey is the worst character in his own game.
>>
>>4385949
Ironically Diddy was the worst character in his own game, too.
>>
>>4385957
But Dixie was definitely the best character in her own game.
>>
>>4385947
yeah I did
>>
Some guy invented that shit.

And this theory was backed up with the point that the original Yoshi Island graphics were rejected by the Nintendo board at the time, because they told to Miyamoto that his game didnt look anything near as good as the Donkey Kong Country games. Thats also the reason why YI has cartoony graphics over realistic ones.
>>
>>4385949
Most def. Diddy Is objectively the best dkc character because he carries the barrel right in front of him
>>
>>4385863
Seconding that it was some book. An anon mentioned it a while back and how it's full of /vr/ myths by some unreliable guy.

The book says Miyamoto said it while being interviewed alongside Tim Stamper, so even if it was said it's probably taken completely out of context.

What are some shenanigans that Miyamoto actually did?

He flipped a table over just before a NoA press event because supposedly two interns that had set things up had done an awful job.

Sounds like a conspiracy between two journalists.

Only relevant comment
>So I'm assuming the Ex-Rare guys who posted on Twitter the concept art and other information on the development of DKC are also lying, right? The only person who is not lying is the one man who wrote the "Miyamoto DK quote" from pic related, that no one on the internet has any scans to prove it, correct?

probably the only real bullshit Miyamoto has done that theres absolute proofs he fucked up is how he pushed Dinosaur Planet from the N64 to the GC and turned into Star Fox Adventures, where it sold like shit. And pretty much killed the franchise with it.
>>
>>4386046

I like how one of the EGM reviews for that game ended with "Oh and if you're furry, change my score to 10/10". It was just a dull Zelda-clone at a time when even Nintendo couldn't even make good Zelda games anymore.

>>
>>4386046
I always wondered what would have happened to Star Fox if Dinosaur Planet stayed an original IP.
>>
>>4386072

Franchise would have remained mysteriously dead except for some half-hearted, cheap portable games, same as what happened anyway.

I always thought Nintendo should have redesigned Starfox as a fast paced game after SF64, people were ready for it.

to be fair, Rare expected to release the game in 2001, and by that point the PS2 was full fucking force raping everyone else, so it would have sold like shit anyways. But at least it would have been a good interesting game, not a shitty Star Fox game.

Gotta love how these old ads would bullshit while still being technically true. I'm assuming the 111 includes bonus stages, because there sure as shit are not that many proper levels in the game.

Similar to how the Super Mario World box said there are 96 levels in the game, when really there are 96 exits.

>A Starfox with no Krystal

There probably would still have been a GCN game down the line and their appearance in Smash probably goes on as usual. Beyond that though Command would likely have never existed.
>>
>>4386072
Fucking nothing because no one has ever like a StarFox game after 64.

I honestly think they should just drop the series altogether, just like F-Zero (nobody wants a super-fast sci-fi racers anymore. People barely want racers in general anymore) and Mother (the series that was too niche for its own good).
>>
>>4385860
Probably this guy.
He has the dumbest fucking ideas as to what was going on at Nintendo. Like when he said that Croc was released before Super Mario 64 and that SM64 ripped it off.
>>
>>4385861
What's wrong with the controls or level design?
>>
>>4391290

Well, he's a much better guy for list videos. I mean, some of his statements he admits were considered bullshit, because there are people who rips off of him... Like Watchmojo for instance.
>>
>>4391290
Larry Bundy often include trap facts to call out when others plagiarize him (ie Watchmojo's top 10 worst selling consoles video)
>>
>>4386078
She was going to be in Dinosaur Planet with or without the IP change, though. Perhaps there'd still be less of it if Planet didn't gain any traction as an IP, but we have no way of knowing if that would have happened.
>>
>>4391516
>>4391517
Then why even watch his 'fact hunt' videos if you can't even trust that what he's saying are facts?
>>
>>4391528

>>
>>4391525

>>
>>4391528
'Cuz they're interesting. I mean, would you prefer Whatculture's shit where they took facts that's pretty much oblivious, or something fresh?
>>
>>4391547
Ah. I forgot about that. Yeah, I don't think we'd be seeing as much of that.
>>
>>4386079

Considering Conker released in 2001 Rare were content to just keep losing money over and over, as long as they could be creative. The best case scenario for it would have been an early, close to launch Gamecube release with the original characters.
>>
>>4386079
listen buddy starfox adventures is great
>>
>>4391528

They're still pretty interesting, some episodes are more a collection of myths and rumours but everything he mentions tends to have at least one concrete source. When he mentions the OP quote in the Miyamoto episode he cites a March '96 EGM interview as the source. Misinterpreted or not it was an interview that made it to print, not something he pulled out of his ass. You're right that it probably shouldn't be called 'fact hunt' though, seeing as it's mostly he-said, she-said.
>>
>>4391616
It's still a hunt for facts, regardless of whether they're indisputably provable. See his Driv3rgate scandal video
>>
>>4386174
There are like 70 single room bonus "stages" in DKC, fucking liars.
>>
>>4386015
From what I heard from the devs of starfox on snes, he tells a lot of dirty jokes.
>>
>>4391290
I can hear his voice in my head.

>WELL HELLO YOU, I'M GURU LARRY.
>>
It's true. Compare the mediocre gameplay of DKC with solid platformer gameplay as in SMW. DKC is just bad and is the beginning of the end of gaming where style over substance basically ruined it.

The quote would be interesting if true because SM64 is a perfect example of mediocre gameplay in a pretty game.
>>
>>4386057
Except that instead of the most bland and generic fantasy land ever it actually had an interesting setting. They should have kept it as Dinosaur Planet so retard Starfox babbies didn't get assblasted because that wasn't the on rails shooter they were waiting for.

Yes I'm mad. That was one of the few good games on the cube and it's a crime that it sold so poorly
>>
>>4391516
He must be really butthurt about it because last week I saw him in the comments of a PCGamer article making a fool of himself, accusing them of plagiarizing one of his videos.

To give you the context, PCG's article had some 10 entries while that guy's video had only 4, and out of those 2 weren't even in PCG. He's completely insane.
>>
>>4391830
Hey Steven, how are your bookos selling?
>style over substance meme
I perceive some creativity crisis
>>
>>4391290
I know him! The fat cunt guy!
>>
The original source of the rumor is Steven Kent's video game history book, where he cites his own interview from some magazine he used to work for. The interview seems unlikely because he describes it as haven taken place with Kent, one of the Stamper brothers (can't remember which one) and Miyamoto all in the same room. Aside from the fact that two men who live and work on opposite sides of the globe are probably very rarely able to be interviewed together in person, I'm not sure why Miyamoto would blame "Americans" for Donkey Kong Country when Rare is a British developer and he would know this.

Peer Schneider of IGN/Gaijin 4koma fame is probably the one most responsible for spreading it around though. The guy had a major hateboner for DKC for whatever reason.
>>
>>4386176
>>4391290
Notice the shit-eating grin in both of them.
>>
Spreading rumours about the Nintendo guys being ruthless and assholes are like the opposite version of the "my dad works for nintendo" kid.
Someone post the Yamauchi pasta.
>>
>>4385860
I think it was just bullshit, i doubt he ever said that.
>>
>>4391517

>>

Nintendo were ruthless assholes, just like every other post-1970's corporation on the planet.

Too much power, no meaningful oversight.
>>
>>4394113
Yeah, as a company sure, but I mean the rumours about the Nintendo guys being privately assholes in their life, like this shit about Miyamoto trash talking the Rare guys in their face.

he was butthurt when rare became better than nintendo

I'm guessing it looked something like Super Mario World, in which case I understand completely. 1st party SNES games looked like shit until DKC came along. There is no good reason for Yoshi and the Koopalings to look the way they did, or for Link to have pink hair and live in fischer price land.

I'm glad the DKC games pushed Yoshi's island to look better.
>>
>>4386015

Not retro but he was furious that the dev team snuck extra lore into Super Mario Galaxy, and ade sure to be super strict about having no story for the sequel.
>>
>>4396674
looking good =/= being more technically impressive

I love DKC, but Super Mario World has a timeless art direction. What's wrong with Yoshi and the Koopalings?
Also, Yoshi's Island is its own thing, it borrows elements from SMW and SMB2USA, but the whole crayon thing was unique to it.
>>

Nah man. SMW looks like shit.

>>4386078
90% of Star Fox porn is Krystal, and Krystal was in Dinosaur Planet too. So, you're wrong.
>>
>>4391290
No, he said that Croc started out as a 3D Yoshi game prototype that ended up giving inspiration for SM64.

And you just need to look at the game to see some evidence for that, with Argonaut previously working on Nintendo on another early 3D game (StarFox), Croc himself looking WAY too much like a Yoshi model changed just enough to avoid lawsuits, and even subtler stuff like most bosses being regular creatures enlarged with magic just like in YI, collectible-driven gameplay like YI, and game looking simplistic compared to SM64 despite being released later.
>>
>>4398669
It's an OK game, and it looks nice for sure, but it didn't feel at all like Doom to me. I'm a big classic Doom-guy but New Doom had none of the charm, imho.
>>4398701
I know it is, I mean I bought the game, I just didn't care for it.
>>
>>4395386

Actually a friend of mine mentioned it just after the release of Yoshi's Island in 1995. He didn't stated the font but apparently Miyamoto was asked what he tought about DKC and the response was an evasive "it has good graphics". Probably a quick comment like that was the origin of the myth. I am pretty sure that there is no interview in which he said that, so it must be a passing mention in some old magazine.
