Arino is a real celebrity that was a famous comedian before this show, not some e-celeb trash youtuber. I think that's the difference.
>>
>>4532186
You post this in every thread. How mad are you about not being allowed to discuss shitty youtuber drama?
>>
I have a picture of Arino on my wall and my mother asked why. I told her in p. vague terms that he's the host of a foreign TV show I like and I find his positivity inspiring. She was curious so I showed her a bit of the Puyo Puyo episode. That was a few days ago. I just now got a text from her asking where she can find more of of "that chinesejapanese video game programme"

I tried watching a few episodes and I don’t get the appeal. He’s awful at the games and he never seems to improve. If he gets really stuck the staff just does it for him. He doesn’t play particularly interesting games either. Does the audience relate to his obvious autism and general lack of skill?
>>
>>4532717

>>
>>4533151

>>
>>4532717
It's not a show that I think everyone would like, but I'll try and explain why I enjoy watching it:

Arino was half of a well know Japanese comedy duo. He's a pretty funny guy, if you're into his kind of humor. Watching him struggle through difficult segments is part of the appeal of the show. Even though he's pretty terrible, you can always see him improve by the end of the episode. His confidence and fighting spirit, despite being a terrible player, is quite charming.

Outside of him playing games, the show features segments of him visiting arcades across Japan, interviews with famous Japanese game developers, and sometimes coverage of events like the Tokyo Game Show. If you have any interest in Japanese arcade culture or the history of game development, there's a ton of really interesting segments.

He's been on TV for like 20+ seasons, so there's a huge variety of games he's played over the years. I am positive you could find an episode of him playing a game that you would find interesting. The show has introduced me to a handful of games that I never even heard about (Battle Golfer Yui most recently.)

Lord Karnage would be "retro" too and would be immediately deleted if a thread focusing on his "reviews" of retro games showed up.
If this doesn't convince you, then the comedy show Gaming in the Clinton Years would be another example.
So it was indeed a "mods are weebs so if the celeb is Japanese it's okay" thing. Got it, thank you.
btw not butthurt, I don't care about celebs anyway, I just don't get why only this one is allowed instead of all/none (preferably the latter). Enjoy your GCCX thread.

No, you get exactly why. One is an actual television show focused on retro gaming. What you WANT to be able to discuss here is talking heads on Youtube and the idiotic drama and "memes" that surround them.

>lolol old vidya is a bunch of cacapoopie doodoo! ASSSSSSS! MINEYCRAFTA!

I mainly play RPGs which are something the show rarely does.
>>
>>4536742
Only 67% of the last few episodes have been RPGs
>>
>>4536048
When does Batsu get good? I watched the the first one in the school gym and the other one in the haunted house and it was mostly boring.
>>
I've been hearing about this show and seeing amusing screen caps posted here for years. I finally got around to watching it and it's boring as fuck. Literally a jap playing games and a narrator flatly describing everything he does. It's almost worst than eceleb shit because it treats the viewer like a retard who can't tell what's going on.

I feel like this show is for people who are interested in games but have like, negative amounts of cognitive skill and maybe no hands or something. You'd be better off just watching a longplay on YouTube, because then you get to see everything and not just what the editors cobble together., and no dialogue over the music and sound effects either.

>>
>>4545270
So episode #243 is a 2-hour untranslated travel special but the travel is all contained on a big floating arcade. Likely a high-priority SA target. Aside from this, #220 and #221 seem to be the only episodes (game = Cho Aniki) that actual team members have expressed a public interest in. Denizens of SA call out for #224 WURM and #219 Rygar, amongst others. Guessing the upcoming 4–5 translations will include #220, #221, #243.
>>
>>4545283
These threads have existed on /vr/ since its inception. They predate the monetization of YouTube and resulting YouTube "e-celeb" culture. Pretty sure people from /v/ resent /vr/ for stealing its thread, which would previously appear sporadically there with less structure and restriction.

Arino isn't an e-celeb. He's a real celebrity. He's been a famous comedian in Japan for decades and this show, which is focused entirely on retro games, has been running on one of the largest television networks in Japan for over 15 years.

E-celebs are people who pay third parties like youtube for the privilege of making fools of themselves to the unwashed masses. E-celebs are internet age freakshows that humiliate and degrade themselves for any form of attention and validation, and grovel for the content creator's equivalent of welfare. Arino isn't begging youtube to stop demonetizing his videos or his viewers to donate to his patreon. He actually works and makes a living playing and talking about games. Starting to get it?

When the show started, retro gaming wasn't very popular, so most companies had very little qualms about licensing out their games to be played on a TV show like this. Nowadays it's a LOT more difficult to get the rights for bigger titles, so the show has to dig into the more obscure libraries of consoles that don't get their libraries rereleased much.

You watched two of the oldest and least entertaining ones that are completely different from everything else desu. (along with the original Onsen Inn one though that one's slightly better)
Batsu really starts taking off with the Yugawara Onsen one, Police school one and Hospital one.
Then it just improves from Newspaper on until it starts getting a bit too formulaic in the last 2-3 years. (but there's often a couple of decent gags anyway)

Did you do a survey?
>>
>tfw there are over 3 different sub groups for every shitty anime currently airing
>only one guy is translating GCCX
>>
>>4557243
No, there's 1. A professional company with dozens of employees, that puts out generally shit-tier work for brainlets.

The rest simply take that script and touch it up a little. There aren't any actual sub groups left, they all died years ago when the pros moved in.

Even back when there was a fansub scene for anime, it was pretty routine to see a show dropped for a month because of some drama. It was very rare to see a show with more than 2 choices for subs, usually there was just one.

What you kids don't seem to understand is that nobody "owes" you a sub. You're entirely at the whims of random people doing shit for no pay, and if you don't like the current situation, then you personally could pretty easily fix it within 2 years. Oh, but that would require effort, right?

There's nothing stupider than complaining about X getting translated over Y. Somebody wanted to work on X, nobody wanted to work on Y. The world isn't fair, that's why there are a dozen groups competing to get the first translation of one piss out every week, and you'll never even hear about 90% of manga.

Translating a show like GCCX is a lot more involved than shitting out an anime sub. You need to translate all the on-screen text, and translate natural dialogue instead of simplified written dialogue. And each episode is 3 times the length of an animu, so no wonder nobody can be bothered. Learn the language or shut up and wait.
>>
>>4557278
>It was very rare to see a show with more than 2 choices for subs, usually there was just one.
This was the sentence your post should've ended on. The rest is just completely unrelated drivel. No one is claiming, or even insinuating, that anyone owes them a sub. Lighten up, Francis.
>>
>>4557472
Clearly all of it was required since somehow you've still failed to realize that there's more than one "guy" working on GCCX subs and that this is nothing short of miraculous. Minecraft guy and the /vr/ remnant even aspire to fansub glory days of technical merit.

I don't get why people keep screwing up his name. It says it on a bunch of screens in the game.
>>
>>4560802
Any language that has an acute accent shouldn't be the de facto localization choice over straight Japanese. Listen to Kan and Arino pronounce the title if you seek further proof. Their little monkey fella bazaar mascot was clearly designed to appeal to Brazil or Portugal or Spain or some other market. It's like calling Gimmick! "Mr. Gimmick" to accommodate its localization to the Scandanavian market. Gimmick! is Gimmick! Bazaru de Gozaru no Gemu de Gozaru is itself. Rolls off the tongue.
>>

>>4560818
Bazaar is an English word. Bazar is a Spanish word. Bazar is also a Portuguese word. Everyone knows what the full Romanji title means. Bazar dé anything still isn't translated. Might as well translate Takahashi Meijin as Master Higgins.
>>
>>4560818
>>4560821
Does this mean that Gozarro is technically from the Amazon jungles of Brazil? Portugal and Spain ain't colonized much in the way of monkey lands in Africa. If he was Moroccan you'd think he'd have a little fez.

Bazar dé Gozarre
>>
>>4560975
Bazar de Gozarre: Le Jeu de Gozarre since French doesn't have accents over the "de" in "of"? Dé is for dice. Dé in Spanish is a conjugation of the verb "dar". Let's work this out here, how else are we to get the proper localized translation for the people of Zaire?
>>
>>4560997
We showed you what NEC named him. His bio is in that picture. It doesn't have to conform precisely to the rules of any one language. It's the character's name.
>>
>>4561021
I find myself troubled since one either pairs NEC's loose idea of French with Japanese / English translation for "The Game of Gozarre" or else makes the entire thing "French". Do it with one language and bazar becomes bazaar or else it all stays Japanese. If it all stays Japanese then everyone is fine since the French love GCCX no matter what the episode is called.
>>
>>4561021
It's the "Bazar dé" part that doesn't conform to any one language but is stylized to be more recognizable to Japanese eyes as originating in French or Belgian colonies of Africa. The name Gozarre isn't a name but names can be anything.

>>

That one encoder is who started bringing up translating and all those different languages, and he can't even read kana. Trying to explain puns to him would be hopeless. The name is just the name. What a stupid argument.
>>
>>4554089
You are forgetting that the PC Engine was a pretty big deal in Japan at the time, much bigger than Mega Drive was. That Bazar de Gozzare does seem pretty obscure, but Bonk's Revenge, Gekisha Boy and Dynasty Wars are all pretty popular games in Japan. If they really wanted to be as cheap as possible you would see Arino play more B/C-tier Mega Drive titles.

Right, but it being a pun doesn't change how you write his name. All the other times, when would you go with "de gozarre" and when would it be "de gozaaru" instead? I'm genuinely curious. The whole commercial campaign is full of puns.
>>
>>4565814
In that case, those definitely aren't a Japan-only thing. They had a huge ad campaign for those in America a few years back.
>>
>>4566002
You'd write his name as Gozarre if: you're trying to lazily make his name seem French like Pierre, if you're honoring Mobutu Sese Seko's brave freedom fighters and their defunct homeland, if you like fake languages or localizing for nonexistent audiences.

You'd write Gozaru if you're releasing a Japanese raw to an audience that gets niggled when their in-depth research into NEC merch gets exposed as nonsensical given the impossibility of translating the game's name in any satisfying manner.

We should get around to finding raws of those episodes, and then combine the subs with it and the segments so we can finally have complete episodes as opposed to the episode and segments being separate.
We'll find a way to deal with Ninja Gaiden and Battle Golfer Yui's extra content.
>>
>>4587419
Like I've been saying for years but people refuse to upload the VOBs
>>
>>4587419
>Ninja Gaiden and Battle Golfer Yui
SOS and The Wing of Madoola were also director's cuts.
>>
>>4587424
>VOB
Worst case is wait for some Jap to upload a shit version of youtube and use that. It's clearly not the best, but it beats having to wait.

Also, to pay it forward. Does anyone have Hour 5 and 6 of the Lemming 24 hour special?
>>
>>4587426
SOS, had its original episodes subbed along with clock tower Solomon's Key, Mystery of Atlantis, 53 Stations of tokaido, and Ninja Gaiden 2. So we don't have to worry about those.
>>
>>4587429
I doubt any Jap is going to upload the BMP files containing the English subtitles from the RGM DVD. Nevertheless they would be in a VOB. Or upload the encrypted ISO I don't give a damn.
>>
>>4587434
We could always brute force this and just write down everything from the episode and then retime everything onto a raw version.
But probably to much effort.
>>
>>4587436
Can rip the timing and hand type the dialogue on the fly for any episode in under an hour. I'm not going to any dance unless I get to rub some tit. There are better episodes to fix with source .TS in hand. Not that Shiren the Wanderer isn't in HD .TS form, both parts.
>>
>>4587431
The episode list says the TV-Nihon subs of The Mystery of Atlantis and Solomon's Key are incomplete. It says the same about Metroid by the way. I think the interviews were cut out.
>>
>>4587426
Of those 4 the only one that isn't VFR 24/60 with a 16:9 inside a 4:3 is Battle Golfer Yui. No extant HD source for it. Have Japanese director's cut in DVD9 source
>>
>>4587443
It also says six episodes from the first season still don't have full subs, but I think most everybody knew that already.

Yea no shit, I prefer 480p. It's perfectly clear enough to watch, and it doesnt eat up a ton of shit on my laptop. I have zero interest in 720p and above.

I was pretty certain that those were ripped way back when?
It's the reason I didn't upload my copy.
>>
I miss 'i want to meet this person' segments
>>

>They really hate it

Nice try, baka gaijin reseller trash
>>
>>4587390
No they obviously aren't called let's players in Japanese. zari-gani's translation style is heavy on localizing everything that can be localized.
>>
>>4532008
No they broadcast 1080i which still is the standard for TV.
>>
>>4588141
How bad is your vision?
>>
Does anyone just watch the arcade/store segments sometimes?

I like them more than the challenge. They are so incredibly comfy. I like how the stores all look so shitty with wood panelling and all the stuff is just in shitty baskets and theres some old Metal Slug cabinet outside.
>>
>>4589927
This will be a rather unpopular opinion, but no. They were fun at the beginning, but recently they started feeling like a filler. There's only so many times I can watch Arino play those old 10-yen mechanical games and/or Metal Slug. What we need is more segments where Kibe shows off some weird games/hardware.
>>
>>4589927
i like arcades and some of the more unusual locations but the store ones suck
>>
>>4589927
I hear this opinion very often, and as much as I can appreciate seeing arcades in Japan and different games, often I just want to go back to the game challenge. I usually go back and watch them fully later, also my friends don't argue when I skip them as I'm showing them episodes.

>Season 21: Episode 19 (#255) "A pro-wrestling game" premieres on Thursday, March 1st.
I'm guessing Super Fire Pro-Wrestling.
>>
>>4590086
Meh, two fighting games in the row seems rather excessive and their first wrestling game challenge they did back in Season 19 is apparently really boring.
>>
>>4589927
I don't watch them on their own but they're regularly my favorite part of the episode. I am a weebo though so that's probably a non-negligible factor in it.
>>
>>4532186

Extremely low quality TV rip and SA has not once bothered trying to redo their subs on the official DVD/BR release when they came out.

to be clear this is a raw right, not a new sub?

Any work on post penguin ep subbs
>>
>>4592016
I think the SA guys said they were working on a bunch of episodes and that the penguin one was just the first to get done.
>>
>>4592016
It's a raw of an episode that premiered yesterday.

I like it when he plays Metal Slug with old ladies.

Whats your favorite side segment? your least?
>>
>>4592610
The last few unsubbed segments in the last couple seasons have been fun. Quiz Famionaire is pretty entertaining.

They need to stop letting illiterate people edit that wiki. It's embarrassing.
>>
>>4589927
I like them. Kinda feels like watching the real Japan instead of the idealized version.
The GCCX in Asia special kinda reminded me of my corner of the sticks in LatAm.
>>
>>4592610
The Xevious Diary is the biggest waste of time the show ever came up with.
>>
>>4592610
The only one i remember is ring ring tactics, a waste of color and the golgo 13 one.

I liked the golgo 13 one.
>>
>>4593187
I agree. Second least-favorite is probably the manga one. Always skipped those.
>>
>>4592610
I like the ones whose premises are so stupid that there's no explanation for how entertaining they actually are. These include Famicom Sniper, Shocking Videos MAX and Barcode Gambler.

My actual favorite is probably Aces of Hardware Won't Appear because the intro music is catchy, Kibe is fun, and it's cool seeing Arino play shit like the 3DO.
>>
I can't follow this list at all. I'm trying to find the subs for the Ninja Gaiden III episode. Please help :(
>>
>>4593280
That episode hasn't been subbed yet.
>>
>>4593369
I realized that later, but thank you.
>>
>>4591819

Woah. Virtua Fighter 2. I had that game. I was one of the only people to get a Saturn. Neat seeing Arino challenge it.
>>
>>4593259
The manga one was pretty boring.
>>
>>4593187

Jogging Race
>>
>>4592610
I like the competition-based segments like To Catch a Catch Copy and Barcode Gambler, but some of my other favorites include Ring-Ring Tactics and Famicom Sniper. There's so many different segments that it's hard to choose just one favorite.
>>
>>4589927
At this point, I prefer the arcade segments over the store segments. I do like the aesthetic of the stores like how you described it, but after a while they all just blend together and feel like repeats of the same thing. They're still enjoyable, but they also need a little more variety.
>>
>>4595678

which episode is this from?

It's from the rooftop amusement park in the Golden Axe episode.

We really need RGM episodes to be recombined so it has both Arino's challange and the segments together.
>>
>>4595678
>To Catch a Catch Copy
I will never not be mad at how they ended that segment.
Fucking Kibe stole the victory from Nakayama, bastard.
>>
>>4599306
Yeah, the ending was kinda lame, but the segment was still pretty good, though.

>All the new goon subs don't have the teaser at the end about winning the autographed version of the game and some random song.
This was a terrible idea to cut it. I liked the random songs.

>>
>>4592610
>Whats your favorite side segment? your least?

The worst is this gay shit. Is it supposed to be ironic? I watched an episode over the holidays with a relative and when this bit came on I cringed so hard I gave myself a prolapse.
The Barcode battler bits were great though.
>>
I've seen these threads a few times but never actually looked into the show.

Currently recovering from surgery and this is prime comfy viewing.
>>
As soon as I finish my Anki flash cards for the day I'm going to watch an episode or two!
