Ugh, Hydlide. Just saying the name gives you a gag reflex like you're about to puke.

HYDLIDE. Sounds so wretched and foul. Maybe it's pronounced Hydlide, but who knows? AND WHO EVEN KNOWS WHAT THE FUCK IT MEANS?
>>
>>5072563
TOP DEFINITION
Hydlide
When two dicks merge into one. This only happens in the abyss.
"Holy piss! Those two penises just Hydlided!"

"Hydliding sets bushes on FIRE!"

"Naaaw, Hydliding in the midnight hour?!"
#hydlide#hyd#lide#merge#merging#dick#penis
>>
>>5072610
The... abyss?
>>
Does anyone have the Windows remake of this game? I have been trying to find a download link for a while, but had no luck.
>>
Do I feel accomplished? No. I feel like this game just wasted my fucking time.
>>
Virtual Hydlide was okay.

Hydlide 3 was okay-ish, too.
>>
>>5072663
Original Hydlide can't have been THAT bad if it got all these sequels. Bet you it's one of those games where westerners hate it and Japanese people have no idea why the fuck they do.
>>
>>5072674
It was originally made for computers and was pretty good there from what I've been told, but then it got a really shitty console port, and America only got the console port.
>>
>>5072663
3/Super was actually kinda good, if flawed.
>>
>>5072616
The stygian abyss maybe?
>>
>>5072563
>Maybe it's pronounced

Hide Lied ハイドライド
>>
>>5072801
Yeah, apparently he gets it correct. I think he must have known beforehand and just wanted to make that joke.
>>
>>5072782
The console port isn't bad, it's just that it was a 5 year old game at the time burgers got it.
Super Mario Bros would've looked pretty fucking primitive had it been released in 1991, too.
>>
>>5072832
>The console port isn't bad, it's just that it was a 5 year old game at the time burgers got it.
This. The only thing that sucks about Super Hydelide on the NES is the goddamned annoying as hell music. It does not have the scope or the polish of Legend of Zelda (which came years after the original Hydelide), and compares somewhat poorly.

Hydelide 2 is even better, and 3 is even better than that.

I haven't played Virtual Hydelide (it looks terrible), but my understanding is that it is very much like the first game, but with a randomized map. The first Hydelide game does not have a whole hell of a lot of replay value, once you solve all the puzzles and beat it, it is basically speedrunning time. Randomizing the placement of shit would give it more replay value.

Also, Jim's final resting place is in Melmond.

t. Unrepentant Hydelide fan
>>
>>5072840

Virtual Hydlide looked good in magazines. The framerate is really low, and you often have troubles telling how far you are from the enemies.
The map is indeed randomized, but so are all the items except the importants ones (that you get after each boss), and even then... after you beat the first boss (a vampire, whose voice in a japanese commercial in reverse I think) you get a lamp, but sometimes you get a DX lamp, which is absolutely the same except it weights more. It's really puzzling.
And you'd better be lucky and find the dark sword for the dragon boss, or you're in for some really long fight.
>>
But why did Hyde lie?
>>
Zelda is a Hydlide clone
>>
>>5073684
Zelda II is a Xanadu II clone.
>>
>>5072840
Virtual Hydlide is pretty boring. The only thing really notable about it is that it's a full RPG made on a game engine meant for golf games.

I don't give a shit about the NES game because I don't like it, but this right here? This is my shit.
>>
How odd.
>>
>>5073965
What golf games are made with that engine? I've been in a golf mood lately, wouldn't mind checking one out.
>>

Love it as well, bro.
>>
>>5074043
Dunbine as fuck.
>>
>>5074043
Same, man. I mentioned before it's flawed, but it had a certain something to it.
- The bizarre setting with craters to motherfucking space.
- The music being catchy as fuck. From the more rock-ish themes to the more solemn track at the tower of Habel, it just feels good.
- The (at the time) super nifty daytime transitions giving it that extra ambiance (even if it made shopping a pain at times)
- The open yet barren yet not empty world with enough stuff to reward exploring, specially when you don't know where to go the first time. The right size to take some time but not big enough to make navigation tricky.
- The storyline is nonsensical, barebones and far from engrossing but I find some amusement to it. Specially the space rescue part with the compass.
- IT'S A JOKE
- Sadly the Genesis versions uses a very brown and dead palette for the overworld compared to the other version's more lush green, but while I prefer the green, the dry panorama kinda makes it more poignant.

You know, as many times as I rented it, I could have bought it outright. Beating Super Hydlide without any guidance as a kid was pretty satisfying.
>>
>>5075445
What the fuck, I had no idea there was a shmup called Undeadline. I wonder if that's where the indie game GundeadliGne got its title from.

Funny I'm still learning new things about old games all these years later. Gaming history is quite vast.

For me it may have been Fullmetal Alchemist: Dual Sympathy which was thankfully extremely short.
>>

I know the feeling. I only just yesterday learned about the ST Falcon, a mecha from a Super Scope game. Looks cool, I'd like to see it make a WTF appearance in super smash bros someday. But yeah, I thought I knew basically everything there was to know about Nintendo history at this point. They still throw me a curveball sometimes though.

I really enjoy T&E Soft's "Golf" for virtual boy. Has great 3D effects. If you want a golf game, I really recommend NES Open Tournament (very hard for newbies to golf games), Hal's Hole in One Golf (also not very easy), or Wonder Classic on the wonderswan. Have fun mate.

Wait a minute, so did I. Were you in my retro rep thread on /v/?
>>
>>5082102
Virtual Hydlide has a kickass menu theme, too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q1oTfdjFWKE
It has that somewhat melancholic Gargoyle's Quest feeling.
>>
>>5082835
Gargoyle's Quest is melancholic? Huh.
>>
>>5082191
Probably was that same thread, because it was someone recommending them for Smash, and I thought it was pretty cool. Hence why I went and ordered a super scope and some games (including ST Falcon's game, Space Bazooka). It's one of the few Nintendo hardware pieces that I've never used, so I'm excited to give it a try.

>>5081997
It's a genre that grabbed my attention recently. I like golf games, they're pretty enjoyable and can be a nice way to relax.

I mean to be honest, you're saying that it's awkward for someone who is on a retro games board, on a website for shut-in obsessives, to have an unusual amount of knowledge around an obscure or unusual topic? I don't know what you expect of /vr/, but a lot of the people here actually do play a lot of games, and consider it important to know a lot about the things they find interesting. If anything, it's worse that you would point out this kind of knowledge as being something to be taken in a negative light. Maybe you would have some ground to stand on in a more "normal" environment, but this is not that environment.
>>
>>5083419
It was just a light joke, senpai. It's fine to be very well-versed in things you like.

weird story, but a couple years ago i got hired to make lyrics and vocals for a swedish melodic metal band's demo they were label shopping, and I made one of the chorus of one of the songs with the lyric "we're living in a hydlide"

So DOES anyone know what Hydlide means? Is it the name of a place or something or is it completely inexplicable? I don't really want to play the game to find out.
>>
>>5087485
The world is named Fairyland. I don't think the game explains what Hydlide is but I don't think it's a bad experience.
>>
Hm...
>>
Fuck.
>>
>>5087485
Tokihiro Naito has said it's just a fantasy-ish title for the game/franchise, and that the word was taken from the names of two constallations. He's fairly certain the first was Hydra, but he can't remember what the second was.
>>
>>5093038
That's interesting. At least there's actually an official explanation out there. I looked at a list of constellations though and cannot find a single constellation with anything that sounds remotely like "lide" in its name though so no wonder he can't remember a second one.

Hydlide, shadow of my life, ice of my loins. So wretched, so foul. Hy-dli-de: the tip of the tongue taking a trip of three steps down the palate to tap, at three, on the teeth. Hy. dli. de.
>>
>>5094101
This looks exactly like the kind of game that would inexplicably have a fan translation from years ago.

And it seems that it is.
>>
Basically, yep.
>>
What's with these weird bumps as of lately?
>>
>>5096528

>>

If you look at the cover it is obvious that the large L implies the start of another word. so, its a compound word that could have a few different pronunciations.

Hid-Lyde or Hid-Li-day
>>
>>5096772
True but the nice thing about the Japanese language is that it ensures that all words have only one single pronunciation so we know just by looking at the katakana how Hydlide is pronounced and it is the way James Rolfe pronounces it in his video.

>>5096995
As a dumb child when I owned this game, I just said "hy-lide". Entirely incorrect but easier.
>>
>>5098990
I also had some weird pronunciations for words like ocarina and Goemon among other things. It's like the child mind insists upon it.
>>
>>5099004
I remember dumb kids having endless discussions about whether ocarina is pronounced "okarina" or "osarina"
>>
I thought that "Vs." was actually pronounced like "viss," and I guess when I said it, it sounded like piss, so I asked my mom for "Mario Piss Donkey Kong."
>>
>>5100296
Still better than the idiots who pronounce every game with "Bros." in it as "Bros" instead of "Brothers." I remember someone in middle school who did that and he even said it for Super Smash Bros., where the announcer LITERALLY says the title in the game.

>>
Hm.
>>
Wonder how popular it was at release. Since I can see this as one of those games that just had an insane influence but it's unplayable after those influence happened. Tower of Druaga, Zelda, Ys, Dragon Quest. Sadly that's kind of the issue with super early 80's games. They tried to add weird mechanics that doesn't 100% work but others took it and fixed it.

It's a nice precursor to Zelda and Ys. Basically a 20 minute game padded into a few hours by some grinding, some gotchas and some cryptic bullshit.

I've played both PC and NES versions, and they are fine.

For some reason people think that AVGN is a serious game reviewer though.
