For #2, really the best things to change on vim are the status line and the colourscheme. The default statusline is good for a minimal look while other statuslines like airline or powerline or whatever will add more fluff. For colourschemes, you might want to make a custom scheme that sticks to the 16 terminal colours if you have nice terminal colours already. Otherwise check out some schemes here: http://vimcolors.com/

I think you should sligthly tweak your term or statusbar (awesome/i3? could be either) color shade though, because the color overlapping looks kind of untidy in my opinion.
Also those statusbar icons are nice, mind sharing?

I am just dual booting to it, not even my main OS. I'm somehow forced to leave Arch Linux because prof thinks its an advantage at "hands-on coding" (i.e. when programming needs to be done in front of him without bringing it to home), just because he doesn't understand the interface.

I'm probably the only one using GNU/Linux as a main driver, also the only one using vim. Although some have like another text editors/IDEs than ST3, its allowed because prof sees it functioning like the editor he wants.

For the folks that use i3, is there an easy way to change color schemes? Or do you folks just do it all manually.

I'm just getting into coding and computers and what not. Can someone please explain to me the Windows hate? I would like to at least try Linux, but the lack of support for the software I use daily and have mastered is what steers me away.

Mostly video editors, like Vegas. I also have most of the Adobe suite. Other big ones are foobar, iTunes, and Steam games I play

I'm new to this linux stuff.
Most of the documentation that I find for configurations is very difficult to understand. How do I make sense of what files need to go where and be edited with what code and syntax.
Am I too stupid or looking in the wrong places?
