Post your vector requests and recently done vectors here.
Previous Thread >>2027597

READ THE OP BEFORE POSTING!

>Before requesting, here are some tips:
– Request an image ONCE per thread. Do not bump or second - once is enough.
– Check the lists below to see if your request has already been previously fulfilled.
– All requests are welcome, within reason, but remember:
– The poorer the quality of an image (in resolution and drawing ability), the less likely it will be picked up. The more detail seen and higher the resolution, the better.
– Full-body images preferred. Images cut off on 3 or more sides are very unlikely to be picked up due to their limited usage; keep this in mind when finding an image to request. (Hair or skirt edges that are barely cut off don't usually count)
– Requests for removing the background from an image (called a RENDER) and resizing requests should go to the IMT threads.
– Refrain from using renders for requests. Try to find the original non-rendered image; it is easier for vectorists to work with.
– Note: Overly complicated images are unlikely to be picked up due to their nature. IF your request is taken, please have patience.

thanks. that's really helpful. something about the new rose does seem off, but it's much better than what I can do, so I'll use it unless someone else wants to try doing another.

Lineart suffers the most here but, for the rest, I think that overall this vector's not too bad.

I've circled a few things. Some examples of where I think the lineart's weight differs way too much inside the same element (ex:hair). That said, looks to me like you have a good control of how many nodes you use and how you play with the handles. I can't quite tell how you did the coloring for her eyes but it looks to me like you put a 3 color gradient that you then blurred. The problem that I see here is that there's a glow coming over the black delimitations and coming onto the white of her eyes.If that is the case then you'll want to use a mask to cut that blur from going over the black section. Personally, I'd do the eyes differently, as shown on the right. I did it entirely with solid shapes and simple gradients. If you're interested to see how I did it let me know and I'll upload the .ai for you. Other things to note are the chin which seems a bit too pointy and the mouth that looks a bit too tight, I'd make her smile wider. Also, I haven't seen this anime but I wouldn't directly color pick from that screenshot, the colors seem a bit too warm from what I think would be the most neutral colors for her. It can be a bit difficult to tone down the colors by hand so if you have a different shot where the colors are neutral, I'd recommend picking from that. Other good colour sources would be official art, depending on the scan, or even fan made stuff.

Hope this helps.
>>
>>2036049
I wanted to try making the inner strands of hair around the face a bit thinner, but I guess I would be better off staying consistent. I'm not confident enough in my abilities to significantly deviate from the original image which is why I tend to struggle with the eyes/face; the example you provided is much better than my original attempt and I'm very grateful for the help. The color selection is something I hadn't considered, I'll try sampling from higher quality images like you suggested.

Also thanks for streaming, the Aoba stream was very informative.

I'd recommend looking into filled shapes for your lineart. There's a good example of it to compare with right above your post. Tutorials are in the OP.
>>
>>2036919
I'm still practicing with filled shapes but I haven't gotten consistent or good enough yet to use them on work I intend to share, imo. Anon who requested seems to be okay with it, though. I'm also actually having a debate with myself about which I even like more. I don't know if I'm just trying to excuse/jerk myself for using basic stroke lines or what but for this and the previous Lucoa I did, I kinda like the rounded stroke lines more than what filled shapes I've played with. Maybe it's just the art style of Maid Dragon? Idk.

Only way to get better at fills is to practice really. If you are looking to get better, feel free to post an example of what you can do so far with fills and we can point out what to improve on and give some tips.

It doesn't matter if you are bad with filled lines - it's better to do them, follow our suggestions as you post, and learn how to get better.

This isn't a marathon., These dont' have to be completed next day. If you are going to make something for someone, why not bake it as good as the original, if not better?

To clarify- I am practicing with filled lines, as I said. I just don't think I'm good enough with them yet to be using them in a work I intend to share/also I think this piece looks better with the rounded strokes. Once I improve enough on my own to where I think it's worth getting outside critique, I will.

>>2036981
Thanks! I agree, really. I've been thinking about it and I believe it may be that the rounded strokes seem less serious and more suited to the cartoon-ish/chibi-ish style of Dragon Maid. And I'm pretty new to this so most of it is outside of my comfort zone lol. Been practicing filled lines for a few days now.

>>

Yes, on pretty much all of my vectors, unless the original colors are already good enough. I try to make the colors as neutral as I can so that the vector will be easy to work with in other programs. Either that or I try to make the colors a bit more vivid but that's just what I prefer. The last vector I posted is a good example of that if you compare it with it's original.

Outline the outside of the line you are following then outline the inside of that same line. Make sure the smaller shape (inside one) is on top of the bigger one, select both and then go to Path and select Difference. Hopefully I don't make this sound too complicated. You can try it with just 2 squares, one big and a smaller one.

You can do it with even less than that. That looks like stroke-to-path.

You just need one node at the bottom, one on each side of the heart, and the one in the center. Then you just copy, paste in place, shrink the inside one, and do the difference thing Deko said earlier.

And yes, this works in inkscape, too.

How do you decide what colors you want to use?

I know that a lot of images use different tones to indicate shading but I have trouble getting even colors when the area I'm coloring is probably a multitude of different colors.

Sometimes I can use a gradient or mesh but other times it makes more sense to just use a flat color from said area. How do you decide what thats going to be?

I start by looking at what the original looks like then look at the official colors for the character. Then I ignore all that and do what I think looks best.

Coloring is hard because its subjective and they way I do it is based off of a lifetime of drawing, painting and vectoring.

Simple tips are;
Look at official art.
Figure out where the light source is and make the shading and highlights make sense. You can have more than one light source and that complicates coloring but can cause really cool effects.
Don't be afraid to take a screenshot of the image stick it in Photoshop and play with the levels, curves, hues and saturation.
Read up on color theory.
Think about what the mood of the image is or what you want the mood to be and see if you can edit the colors to fit.
Do not be afraid to do just flat colors some times simple is best and there is not a reason to complicate things.
If you are stuck just ask, I have helped with coloring in the past.
Even if its not that great post your work anyway getting critiques and actually listening to them is the best thing you can have.

I'll use what I'm currently working on as an example.

As you can see its definitely shaded as if its nighttime. But there in lies the problem as it looks odd outside that dark background particularly the skin tone. I tried to even it out between the hands and the face but I don't know if that was a good idea.

The chest area is another issue. I feel like I'm going to need several gradients or a gradient mesh to replicate how that looks. I really don't want to make this super complicated though since I'm planning on printing it, but using a solid color looks really flat.

You probably want to take the original image so a quick render and the adjust the colors and levels in photoshop. The skin tones have to much blue in them for generic coloring still.

This is a perfect example of an image where you would want to use outside sources for color selection; the character is Akatsuki from Log Horizon, so look up official art or quality fan art and use colors from those images instead.

Followed you guys' suggestion to get another daytime image and the results feel very jarring but I copied over the color scheme as best I could making a few adjustments for gradients and some tones I had to make myself.

I will say LN shots and anime shots are equally terrible since they barely have 2 tones of each color while I need at least 3. Just kind of annoying.

Please let me know what you think I can improve.

This is what I used for my new colors but they look all over the place. The anime screenshots don't have enough colors for me to work with.

I'm really not understanding this coloring thing too well. Other than just playing with it in photoshop and hoping it looks better I don't really know what the best solution is.
>>
>>2038170
Colors on this image look a bit washed out. What I like to do in a case like this is to color pick from said image and tune them by eye via the color wheel, manually. I know it's not much help but I don't really have any trick to offer other than winging it until it looks fine or until you get enough practice with this process.

Other issue is the light source, since it's coming from the moon behind her, it projects the shading on most of what's visible of her which makes it look very unnatural when taken out of that context. That brings me back to what I was saying in my earlier post about making the colors neutral, goes for the lighthing too in this case. Changing the light source would require a bit of redrawing but as long as you pick a new, more neutral, orientation for the lighting, it shouldn't be too bad to guess where the shadows should land.

If you'd like, post the .ai/svg and I'll try and pick the colors/shading that I think would fit.

>a bit of redrawing

Yeah I think the light source does complicate it. Originally I had intended this to be part of a sticker for a motorcycle. Maybe I should have picked another image to do, but its probably fine as is.

I wish I could just get a master image with all the colors used. I think its a character sheet or something.

I don't currently have illustrator but I can drop the .svg if you want to take a look. But I don't know how to post links to things without it flagging it as spam.
>>
>>2038174
It's definitely not an easy image to work on because of the color palette and shading orientation issues.

Linking usually works as is for me, except for twitch. When it doesn't, I usually just remove dots. Maybe even remove the slashes from the address if it still doesn't let you.

I'm not going to do the whole thing but here's my take on some of it. You can pick and choose what you think is good enough and leave out the stuff that looks wrong.

I left a bunch of parts out so you can ask again if you are unsure about those, I'm sure someone will be able to give pointers for those.

Also, exporting it to illustrator made kind of a mess so don't mind the weird aliasing.

Hope this helps in some way.

This is a tall order but I'm gonna ask anyway. Could someone vectorize this (and get rid of that disgusting fade to black)?

I'd like the wallpaper to be in 1440p and 2160p (for future proofing). I'd also like a mobile (1080*1920) version too if possible. I can make those by myself if a repeatable pattern is provided though.

Thanks.

Hi guys, sorry for bothering, but this seems the right place to ask.
I'm trying out Affinity designer and I made this wallpaper, but I can't export it without that ugly color banding, even if I chose 24bit PNG.
Do you know how to solve?
>>
>>2038655
I have not used it so I could not say for sure, it looks like when you are saving it's using limited colors so I would look for options on that.
>>
>>2038538
>>2038642
I have been tempted to use that to finish the characters I did for our group vector.

>>2038655
Anytime you have colors that are really close in a gradient you will get some banding. Also, part of it can just be your screen. If you had a 10-bit color screen and the computer set to run it, the same image would show less banding. I never could get used to Affinity Designer.
>>
>>2038655
I'm not an expert on this, but as far as my understanding goes this occurs because the two or more gradient colours you have chosen are quite close to each other in the colour space you're using, probably SRGB. Thus, only X amount of colours can be shown in between, giving that banding effect. The only real way this can be fixed is to use a wider colour space. However, your own and most other people's screens probably aren't capable of reproducing that wider colour space. So the options you have left are to either to change the colours to be further away from each other in the colour space you're using E.g. make one darker and the other lighter or to add a slight bit of grain to the gradient thus introducing more colours and breaking up the banding.

>>2038658
Yeah there's a few things I could do better on Nadeko this time around anyways, I'll still base it on my original .AI though. Also I'm always happy to do a Tsukihi vector. It will be a fun project if it materializes.
>>
>>2038660
Yeah, I might be getting colour space mixed up with bit depth here.
>>
>>2038657
>>2038658
>>2038660
Got it, I think I'll modify the gradient to pick colors further from each other.
Thank you all!
>>
>>2038660
>>2038665
>>2038668
Just to amend one thing I said, It's increasing the bit depth of your current colour space that will help with gradients. If I understand correctly increasing the bit depth of a colour space will add more colours within that colour space, thus adding more possible colours between gradients. A wider colour space will give you more colours that would be completely outside a smaller colour space/gamut. Anyone who knows more about this feel free to correct me.
>>
>>2038674
He mentioned the 24bit PNG so it isn't that, I still think part of it is his screen not showing those non-8bit colors.
>>
>>2038679
I know that if his screen can only display 8bit colour he will not see 24bit colour. I was just explaining that it is the bit depth that controls the colours in between a gradient in a colour gamut. That's why I mentioned earlier that it is better to just change the gradient because most people's displays can't reproduce it.
>>
>>2038685
I suppose it depends on the use case. But if it is for the web you should target 8bit.
>>
But there's no reason to not save it as a 24bit png still.

Because I like cute witches/darker imagery and am not a huge fan of Christmas stuff.

I could be convinced to extend the deadline, but I am interested in what people would do with less time, do they do a simpler image but have damn good lines or something complicated but messy. Or do we have a John spend 3 days straight doing something insane with no sleep.

I'm open to suggestions.

sorry for the rude question but what is it you guys do around here? how are you different from IMT? do you draw up things from scratch?
>>
>>2040101
Yes, what you just posted is called a render, which is done by erasing the background around an image.

What we do here are called vectors, which is redrawing images from scratch using Illustrator or Inkscape so they are infinitely scalable to any resolution without any loss of quality.

For example, see >>2036043 vs >>2036042
Or >>2037236 vs the original linked in that comment.

wait really? how can you profit off of anime vectors? thats a shame because i find most of the pngs either scale bad or are too small
>>
>>2041961
People will take the Ai files, go to a printer and start selling our vectors on shirts or posters for profit. Most likely someone from China.

Aside from a few things your akarin is much better than mine, which was my second attempt at vectoring.

I even had to redo the entire thing because I used strokes.

If you fixed the colors so they were not so washed out you might find your is better than you might think.

A few things that are a quick fix and would make a huge difference.

The red circled areas, just remove them, they are so small they look like mistakes to those who have not worked on it.

The green circled areas, pick another color so it does not have that odd blue when it has a hard line like that. The bottom left just ease up on it because it makes it look really dark.

Blue circled areas have lines that got too thin.

Finally the eyes, just make them more vibrant, with it selected, choose the main color in the eye, select or open the color window, change it to HSB in its settings and adjust the middle line a very very tiny bit to the right, that is all you need to do to adjust the color.

Her nose looks like a stoke and it shouldn't. You've also got a few issues with the hair points, some of them the pink hair is pointing in a different direction than the black lines, and some the lines are way too thick.
>>
>>2042027
Thanks for the interest but I've kind of moved on from that stage. I might attempt to redo the whole thing one day but probably not since I learned a lot since then.

It may be glorified tracing but its still hard as hell when you first start out.

This vector took me probably 200 hours while I don't even spend hardly 40 on them now.

I would suggest finding an image you actually want done and request that. General requests are pretty much ignored as if we are going to put 50+ hours into an image you can at least not be lazy and find an image you actually want.

I was just reading back over this and I was a little unsure about a couple of things we were talking about right here, so I thought I'd look in to it a bit further and share, to clear up a few things for anyone interested. From what I've found, when a monitor manufacturer refers to their monitor as 8 bit RGB they are saying it is capable of 8 bits per channel/colour. While with a 24 bit PNG, the "24 bit" there is referring to the bits per pixel. So in short, 8 bits per channel = 24 bits per pixel because there are 3 colour channels in the RGB colour gamut. PNGs with transparency are a sort of pseudo 32 bits per pixel image, there is an extra 8 bit channel added, but it is used only on transparency so an 8 bits per channel RGB monitor wont have any trouble displaying it. I imagine this does cause confusion because I generally don't see people specify if they are talking about bits per channel or bits per pixel when it comes to colour depth. If anyone knows more about this feel free to chime in. Anyway, I'm glad this came up because I did learn from it.
>>
>>2042438
Actually it's probably not always the case that a monitor manufacturer will list their colour depth in bits per channel, I'm sure there's some that list in bits per pixel.
>>
>>2042438
I meant in a* RGB colour gamut, because there are different RGB colour gamuts.

If you're talking about
>Refrain from using renders for requests. Try to find the original non-rendered image; it is easier for vectorists to work with.

I cannot help myself but say that the original unrendered image is even worse. There was a signature and some smoke on it, which I removed to make it easier for the person who might vectorize this image.
>>
>>2042769
We appreciate that you're trying to make it easier, but really, we ask for original images and not renders for a reason.

When you cut out the girl you removed some of the line art and it makes it difficult to trace lines that aren't there.

And honestly, a signature and a bit of smoke doesn't make it any more difficult when we are redrawing the entire image from the ground up; it's pretty easy to just not trace something we don't want in the final image.

another update here.
I have a question for you, OR.
earlier Deko very helpfully extended the image for me with another rose and filled in more of the skirt (thank you again!)
however, the skirt that was drawn was a regular kick pleat skirt, not the one with bows & lace that kuroneko actually wears. i can probably add bows on easily, but the lace is trickier. do you want me to try to add lace to it (which would probably take a lot longer), or are you fine with a normal skirt?
by the way, you can of course point out any errors you find with the vector, or things you don't like.
